"What was that?" Sam asked with a frown on his face as Damien dropped the phone to the table.

"You asked me to call her, and I did," he replied with a puzzled expression on her face, his eyebrow almost dispersed into his hairline.

"And you did not get her to go on a date with you? I thought you had the game," Sam murmured.

"You heard her; she is busy, and I am busy."

"Busy doing what?" Sam asked, jumping off the sofa and walking to the table. "You came to me asking me to help you, and now I am helping you, but you do not seem as interested in it again."

"You know that Amber's death anniversary is coming up; are you asking them to forget about it and just run to the woman who killed her?"

"You are not running to her; you are carrying out your suoer devious plan, and there is nothing wrong with it; I am sure that Amber would be..."

"There is no need for you to mention her name," Damien said grumpily.

"My bad," Sam said, picking out things from the table and dropping them back as

Lila looked up when she heard a knock on the door. Her eyes caught the clock on the wall, and it was a bit later than she had been leaving work, but she was making up her mind to get up from the table until she was done with the material in hand, and she still had at least a few pages to go over. "Come in," she screamed just enough so whoever it was could hear it from the door. Rain popped her head in and was shocked to see her still comfortably seated in her seat, not ready to go yet. She took herself out of the door frame and closed it behind her. "Are you ready to go, ma'am?" Rain asked in a small voice as she walked to the table. "I would love to review the rest of this document before I go" she murmured without looking up. "Do you want to clock out already?" she asked taking a brief glance at her before dropping his head. "It is an hour after closing time," Rain murmured. "Yes, it is," Lila's voice did not sound worried. She spoke as though they were supposed to be there at

"Hurt? Who said anything about getting hurt?" Damien choked out after a solid minute. He had drawn blank and had not known what to say. He had thought hard, and the only thing he thought of saying was to refute what she had said. "At first no one talks about hutting the other, but as time goes on..." she trailed off as her mind wandered to Gavin. When she first met him, he never acted like he was going to be the monster he was today; he was the one always being loving to her, and even though it was clear to her when the relationship ended and when she was the one clinging on to him, she did not want to feel alone, so she held on as tightly as she could. She knew he was trying his best to get away from her and could not, sending her to jail was like his redemption. He could be free without the guilt of being the one to break it off. After she had been branded as the criminal he was now free to live his life without the label. "Why would you think that I would hurt you?" "I never sa

Lila knew she had no choice but to allow him to have his way. If she ate the meal he brought, it would be easier for him to drive her out of the office. He had sent her assistant home, so she was not sure if there were others at the office or if she was alone with him. This was not the first time she was with him all by herself but for some reason, this time her heart seemed to beat faster and just by looking at him butterflies in her stomach were doing their job. She was sure that could do just one meal with him without losing her guard. "What did you bring?" she asked sitting on the sofa opposite him. She had chosen a single lone so that he could not join her on it. "Are you going to sit there?" he asked tilting his head. "Where else do you want me to sit?" she asked untying the plastic bag that was tied and taking out the disposable plates that the restaurants had used to pack up the meal. "You are sitting so far away as if we are in a business meeting; you should think at lea

Lila was wiping down the table while Damien sat with his legs crossed. "Are you not going to leave?" she asked dropping the paper towel in hand angrily at the table. She had told him that it was only that she cleaned up since he was the one that brought the meal. She thought that volunteering to clean would make him leave. He got comfortable with his legs crossed as he slipped out of the bottled water in his hands. "I am sensing that you want me out of here" he said. She rolled her eyes because she knew that he was only saying that because he did not want to leave. "I thought you were going to leave as soon as we were done with the meal" she said picking up the towel and wiping down once again. "When did I ever say that?" he replied with one eyebrow raised at her. "I thought that was the deal we had" she said standing up and staring at the table to determine if it was clean enough for her to stop. She felt satisfied with her efforts so she trashed the paper towel and picked up a

"Distracted by your presence? How could I be disturbed by your presence?" She asked, rolling her eyes. She was distracted and knew she would focus better on her work if he were not there. She kept raising her head and imagining what could happen between them, and as far as her imagination ran, the more her heartbeat in fear mixed with excitement. "If I am not distracting, then I am sure that you definitely would not mind me sitting here," he said in a low tone. "I am just wondering why you would rather sit there than go home and rest in your bed," she said. She could not believe that was all she had made up her mind to come up with. She should have thought to say something better than that. "I am not complaining, so I do not see any reason why you should compile on my behalf," he said, shrugging. He tapped on his phone; she was curious to know what it was that he had been looking at since. He was doing all of these things to her, and yet he seemed too far for her to be okay. "I am

Lial knew that there was no fighting it again if she had not been able to send him out when he first appeared with a plastic bag in hand; she should have known that there was no going back for her. He sent her home in a car and told her he would be in touch the next day. "For what?" she had asked, but his response was a wink in her direction, and then he asked the driver to go. "So tell me everything that happened," Arietta said over the phone. Since Arietta and her brother broke it off completely, Arietta had avoided the situation, and Lila knew it was the right thing for her to do. Continuously showing up there was not going to be good for her, but they both kept in touch so much that one might assume they were the ones in a relationship. Arietta had said multiple times over the phone that they needed to meet, but Lila had apologized because she knew she was the one to go over since she could come. Lial had promised to come as soon as she met her unrealistic deadline. Arietta de

  • Lies Behind Bars: The Hidden Life   GAME PLAN

Damien lay in bed with his eyes shut tight enough that they formed lines around his eyes. He had been trying for almost half an hour to fall asleep, but it felt like everything was reminding him of how he felt when Lila stared down at him. He shook and stirred in bed until he finally sat upright in bed. "I have to do something about this," he murmured to himself as he got out of bed and changed out of his pyjamas. He knew that if he stressed his body enough, he could sleep easily, so he went down to the gym in the basement and began to run the treadmill. He felt tired after a while, but he knew it was not enough to make him fall asleep. He lifted some weights, and then, when he knew he felt a bit exhausted, he got up to rest. Every time he closed his eyes, he saw her eyes staring back at him with so much intensity. THE NEXT DAYDamien got out of bed very early, so he could not just fall asleep as easily, and his subconscious had kept him awake for longer, so he thought he would be a

"Let me get this straight," Sam said, jumping down from the stool he had positioned himself on."Get what straight," Damien said almost, gritting his teeth together. He regretted asking him; he wished that Sam could just answer the question and let it go instead of trying to make a big deal out of it. A teasing expression climbed his face, and he knew he would not get out of this one so easily."You are asking me how you can know if you like a third party, isn't it?" Sam asked. He was still trying to control himself, but he was 100 per cent sure that Damien was asking about himself. "A friend of mine is asking, and I just wanted to know." "A friend of yours? I thought I was your only friend." Of course, Sam knew that Damien did not have any other person so close to them that they would think of calling themselves friends, yet he was still so brazen to lie in his face. "You have a friend that I am not aware of?" he added, trying to act hurt even though all he wanted to do was burst i

By the time Rosa had made sure they had enough cookies that their tooth hurt, Kevin retired to his room and then they went to the grave site. Kevin had stayed down not because he wanted to but because Rosa was suddenly herself and was now bossing him around as she used to do before. "It is going to be a long ride to the grave. Are you sure you do not want me to get anything for you?" "Anything to eat?" Lila asked, shocked. She had never been filled with cookies before; they say that there is a first time for everything and this was truly a first for her. "Yes, maybe some bread or just anything," Rosa replied and Lila shook her head. "Don't be shy and tell me; even if we don't have it at home, I will stop over at the store and get it for you." Rosa's offer sounded sweet but Lila was sure that she did not need to eat anything again. "I am fine," Lila said and then they left for the car. Lila helped Rosa into the car before turning around and getting in by herself. "We can go now," s

Lila stopped over at a flower shop and got two bouquets of flowers on her way to Rosa's place. She stood by the door her sweaty palms making it difficult for her to ring the bell. She pressed her hand against her clothes and raised her hand again. As if she was being watched she looked around to make sure that there were no eyes on her. As she raised her hand the door flung open and Rosa stood in front of her with a big smile across her face. "Hi, I was just about to ring the bell" she said taking a deep breath. "I know" Rosa said pushing the door wider and then stepped out. She pointed to the camera that Lila seemed to have missed and then she raised her phone and waved it to her. "I have been watching you for a while now" she added. "I am sorry, I am a bit nervous" Lila said licking her lips. She had licked it so much that all of the lip gloss she had put to prevent her lips from drying out was gone by now. "I can understand. My husband is a bit intimidating but once you get to

"Where do you think you are going?" Tessa asked as Lila descended from the stairs. Lila had expected a scolding from her mom because she allowed the plan fall through but insisted she just gave her a look and went into her room. This was the first time she was seeing her since she got inside last night. "To see Amber" "But Amber is dead" Tessa words came out without any form of remorse. "She is" Lila breathed out. "She is dead but I am going to her grave to say hello and apologize for making her leave this world earlier than she was supposed to. "Why do you have to be the one to apologize for that?" Aletta asked walking into the room and standing by the door frame. "If I feel guilty then don't you think that I need to apologize?" "So you are apologizing to clear your guilt?" Oliver asked coming out of nowhere and placing his arm around Aletta's shoulders. It felt as if they had ganged up against her. She gulped down the lump in her throat and shook her head. "I have to say you are pretty good with kids," Rosa said as they approached them. Damien and Jason had played so much that Lila was afraid that the boy was now attached to him in just a few hours. It kind of made her feel bad that the thing that took her weeks to do just took him less than an hour to achieve. "You doubted me," he said, and he felt the need to impress. "I used to volunteer at an orphanage every weekend until I got too busy," he said with a proud tone. Both ladies did not miss that he was trying to humble brag but it was obvious that he was terrible at it. "You should go back to volunteering there; I am sure that you were making such a great impact; it would be a shame if they had to let you go," Rosa said. "I should?""Of course you should; I think you are better as a volunteer there than as the chairman of your company." "How did you find me here?" Lila asked. Did he put a tracker on her? How was it possible for him to find her here? "Did you put a tracker on me?" she voiced out her thoughts as they filled her head. She wondered if she did not have a filter to take out those things before they got out of her mouth."No, I did not put a tracker on you because that would be illegal.""Yeah," she nodded but somehow was not convinced by his legal or illegal speech thing. "So..." she trailed off as she demanded an answer."I asked your mom and she sent me your location." Lila blinked. Her mom sent Rosa and Damien here? Why would she do that?"My mom?""I told her that I wanted to speak to you and she allowed me to come here," Rosa said, taking a step forward so she was closer to her. "Can we talk for a few minutes?" Rosa was sure that speaking to her would bring closure for both of them. Lila did not need to feel guilty when she had done nothing wrong and Rosa wanted to let go of all the resentment she car

Don't worry; it is normal to have second thoughts about things like this. But I promise you that once this passes, you will be glad you did this." "I don't know Mom; kidnapping him just seems a bit too cruel. I mean, he is my son and what if he remembers this moment for the rest of his life and he does not want to talk to me about it? What if it ends up as pent-up emotions on the insides of him?" she asked. By the fourth time of meeting her son, Jason has began to bond with her better than the first time. "He really likes you" Gavin commented. "Of course he does. I am his mother" Lila replied. She could not believe this guy was not still comfortable with leaving her alone with the boy. They had planned to have the boy kidnapped today but he was not going away. She knew that if he stayed with her then the plan was going to fail and she could not have it fail. She would be in great trouble if it did fail in her hands. Since she could not get him to leave her alone with the boy, Tessa made Oliver to call him out. He was to act as if he wanted to take him out for drinks to accept him into the family and then that was when disaster would strike. Lila was not sure it would pan out the way they wanted since he had been careful with leaving Jason with her. It was as if he was picking up on what was going on."That true" he said slapping his thigh. His phone began ringing and Lila held her b

Lila stood in front of Gavin's house and swallowed hard. She had been standing for a good moment; she wanted to run away. She could not bring herself to ring the doorbell. "I have come this far to back out now," she said, taking a step forward and ringing the bell. She heard shuffling from inside the house and then the door flew open in front of her. "Hi there," she said. He took her by surprise and hugged her tightly, her hand to her side. "I am so glad that you could make it," he said, leaving her, and she was glad he did because if he held on longer and she did not hug back, she would seem strange. They were supposed to be lovers but she had not thought of the fact that they might want to do intimate things. What was she supposed to tell him? It was not like she was one to say no to things like that; that was the way she ended up pregnant and he knew her. Could she say her values had changed and she was waiting for marriage now? She knew that she had to come up with something to
