"He was asking me what I would like to eat," Lila asked herself, staring at the phone. She had been so sceptical about him, and as much as she thought that his action was supposed to clear off the doubt she had, she feared that he was plunging her into more fear by the day. She dropped onto the bed with her eyes closed as she tried to steady her beating heart and convince herself that her heart was only doing that to her because she was feeling a bit stressed even though she had barely done anything all day.

"Can I say something, sir?" Gray said out of the blue, and Damien raised her head to him. "I do not think you might like what I am about to say."

"And yet you still want to say it?" Amien asked, shocked at his assistant. Gray had always been simple and took his words as law; he had never thought of speaking back at him like this, so Damien was curious as to what he wanted to say to him.

"Yes, sir," he replied with a small nod.

"Go on," Damien told him.

"Sir, I do not think tha

"Are you asking me to sit on the floor?" he asked again. "Well, are you going to sit there and act uncomfortable when we could sit down on the floor and act free?" she asked. Damien looked down at his custom-made clothes and wondered how she was a heiress and acted the way she did. She was sure that no one in her age bracket would act the same way. 'You are worried about your clothes?" She asked, taking out everything from the bag and seeing it up on the table in front of her. He looked up to see her set up the meal without taking her eyes off, so he wondered how she knew what he was thinking. "They are just clothes," she said softly as she turned to him slowly. "Just clothes?" he scoffed, rolling her eyes. She must really be clueless about how the world truly worked. He had to sit on a very long bench for a while before he could get the suit he was wearing, and he was expected to just sit on the floor because she wanted it. "These are not just clothes...""Let me guess it is Lux

  • Lies Behind Bars: The Hidden Life   MAKING A CONNECTION

"Making a connection?" she murmured, taking a bite from the pizza and gulping down the remnant of food in her mouth."Is that not what you want?" he asked, and the room fell silent. Lila silently munched on her food, not because she did not have a thousand thoughts running around in her mind but because she did not know how to put them into words that would make sense. "You are awfully quiet," Damien said, breaking off the silence. He had broken the silence, so it felt weird that she was not talking again."Can I ask you some questions?" she said suddenly. "Strangely, you want to ask me questions, but I guess you can," he said, dropping the pizza back into the box. "You should not do that," she said, looking around. "I forgot to bring plates," she said, unfolding her legs and standing up. She shook them to get the blood flowing through them again. "I can go get the plates instead," he volunteered, trying to stand up. She bent so she could reach his shoulders, and she pushed him dow

"You want to know?" She said she was turning so she could look at his face, and no matter how she looked at him, she could not understand the expression on his face or what it meant. "You want to know?" she said, picking each word as if she were about to tear it apart. He picked up the cup and gulped half of the content before clenching his mouth and turning to her. "What I meant was..." He trailed off because he did not know how to tell her that the only reason he was sitting in her living room acting like they were close was just because he had to get closer with her so he could distract her. "Was?" she urged him when the silence lingered for longer than she was expecting; even if he was trying to make a dramatic silence stall for longer than necessary, it was not going to make him seem special. "I thought you were interesting," he said, pressing his heels together. "Was? Did I now seem boring to you when you got to know me? Just boring plain Lila who likes eating pizza and drin

"That was fast," Lila murmured when he walked back into the room. "Did you want me to sleep on the call?" he asked, and she shook her head. "I said that because I thought it was a convenience call and that it might take you a long time to sort it out," she said, pressing down the can of beer in hand and dropping it to the table. She looked at the pizza and wondered if he bought too much; even if Oliver was to join them, she was a hundred per cent sure that he was not going to turn their offer down and tell them that they were destroying their perfectly good bodies. "It was a personal call," he said, sitting beside her."Ohh," she said, nodding. He expected her to ask more questions. He narrowed his eyes at her side, and she sat silently munching on her pizza slice."You know the people that called me just now," he said when she did not say anything for a long time and they sat in silence. "I do? I do not think so.""But you know them.""Well, I highly doubt it; I do not know anyon

"See how easy that was?" Gavin said with a boastful smile on his face. "Woah, I have to say Damien shocked me." "All men are the same; I am sure he wants to know more about the woman who is desperately laughing herself to him, he said, chugging down his beer. "And who better to tell him than her ex?""Be careful not to get on his bad side though; we all know what kind of nasty temper he has." "I have got all of this under control," he said with pride. When he decided to call Damien, he was not sure what the outcome was going to be. He feared that Damien may not take him seriously, but seeing how he did not hesitate to meet, he was sure that he had some doubts about Lila and wanted some clarification."I better get." "Already? I thought you came here to get better. Are you telling me you feel better already?" Daniel asked."Of course I do," Gavin said, standing up and walking out of the bar.Daniel watched his friend go and wondered what kind of person he was. It was obvious that

"Gray, I will be having a visitor today, so find a way to fit that into my schedule," Damien said as they walked from the elevator to his office. "A visitor?" Gray asked, taking notes on the electronic tablet he had in his hands. The question of who was bubbling in his mind, but he could ask that because he knew that he would have mentioned it if he wanted"Also bring me some black hot coffee; I think I might need it.""Coffee?" Gray asked shocked because his boss rarely asked for coffee and hearing he was asking for dark and hot coffee so early in the morning.Damien did not know how it made sense, but he had stayed up all night thinking about Lila and her reaction. He did not know much about relationships since he had only ever dated one person in his life, but for some reason, he could not shake the feeling of how sad and alone she must have been to be able to react the way she did. Everytime, he shook his head and closed his eyes, trying to remind himself that it was not his bus

“You do not look shocked,” Gavin said. He had expected that Damien would have been so shaken that it would have shown on his face. “Because I already knew," Damien said and shrugged, bending back to his meal and eating like nothing had just happened. "You know, and yet you are still with her?" "With her? What do you mean that I am with her?" Damien asked. He had truly thought that this man sitting away from him was going to come up with something he did not already know about Lila. He had spent enough time researching to be able to know all that there is to know. But seeing that Lila and Gavin had spent six years together, it only made sense that he was supposed to know more than any other person. "Arent you tigetehr?" Gavin asked, wondering if he had got the wrong idea about the two of them. "What does that have to do with you?" Damien asked. He still could not see where Gavin was going with any of these. "Mr. Carson, you have a call from Mr. Calloway." His assistant's voice rang through the intercom and then beeped dead. He looked at his phone, beeping a red light back at him to indicate that the phone was waiting for him to pick it up. He picked up the receiver and put it to his ears, wondering if this was some kind of joke on him because Damien never cried out first."Damien?" Oliver was shocked to get a call from Damien. He had tried for years to get close to him, but all that Damien had done was raise a wall between them, and no matter how much he tried, he was blocked every single time. "Oliver," Damien said back. Damien had been surprising himself in these recent times. He had been the one to reach out to Oliver to ask to be steered up with his sister, and now he was getting worried about Lila. He was trying to convince himself that the reason for him crying out to Oliver was not that he was worried but because he did not like to think that a small fry like Gavin was trying to

"Damien?" Rosa said as she saw him walk towards her in the garden. "I did not know you were coming over today," she added, and he smiled sadly, sitting beside her in the chair. "I also did not know that I was going to come over; it was kind of an impromptu thing," he confessed. "What is it with that expression on your face?" she asked. "What expression?""You look sad, but it is a different kind from the one I am used to," she said. He always looked sad, carrying around a gloomy face since Amber died. She always thought that it might be a good idea if he found someone who knew and loved him, but somewhere deep inside her, she wanted her daughter to be remembered a bit more. She was afraid that if she told him to do that, he might take it so seriously that her daughter would be a forgotten memory faster than one could think. That was the reason she never suggested it to him. She feared that the expression on his face was him coming to tell her that he had found someone and was goin

Tessa asked, leaning in and using her to trace the edge of the table. "Would you like anything to eat or drink?" Damien said instead of answering her. "It's already past ten; I had breakfast," she replied and then added in a low tone. "I am not an animal after all." "I am yet to have breakfast. I guess I must be an animal, but I need breakfast, so I will get you a cup of water and a few pastries for the table," he said, standing up and going to the counter to order. Tessa wondered why he had so much confidence. She knew him and his father when they suddenly rose to fame and how he changed the history of everything around him. He had been so influential that his past suddenly did not matter to everyone around him. Those who would have nitpicked at everything were comfortable with it all. Damien

Lila wanted to check on Damien to see if he was hurt in the fight, even if it was most unlikely that anything like that would happen. She was still worried, but how would he believe anything if she was calling him up to check on him after brutally breaking up with him and even going the extra mile to try and convince him that she was done? "I never even got to tell him that I liked him," she murmured to herself. She did not know why it was so important to her, but she wanted to tell him at least once that during their time together she had begun to fall for him before she had to do what was right for herself and her family. THE NEXT MORNING"Damien is asking to meet with me," Tessa said as if she were giving morning updates to the group on the table"Why?" Lila choked out, trying not to sound too excited or curious to hear it. She had to first convince herself that she was capable of getting the job done before she could convince anyone else. Gavin looked at his face in the mirror of his car before turning it off. He felt pain surge through his body. Damien had only punched him once yet but felt like he had gotten beaten up. He walked into the house hoping that Evangeline was already asleep and he did not need to go back and forth with her today. "Why are you just getting back?" "Since when did you care what time I got back?" Gavin was startled by her voice because he had looked around when he got in and had not seen anything but majorly because the entire place was dark. She watched him look around like a criminal ready to steal something when he came in. She wanted to stand in front of him and rain down cursed but held herself back. Tessa had called her and sent images of Gavin with Lila. She told her that she was against it but her daughter was going back to Gavin. He knew that he would not be able to win against this man, but the pride he felt in his heart was not going to allow him to back down. "What do you also think you are doing?" Damien asked, closing the gap between them so that they were now touching chest to chest and their faces so close to each other that if they tipped a bit, they might be kissing. "I asked you first; why don't you answer?" Gavin asked. He knew he should not be doing anything like this, but maybe the confidence that Lila was beside him now was giving him some kind of push. "What?" Damien let out a surprised laugh. "You must think that you are a big shot now," he added. "You punched first, and for what?" Gavin's eyes darted around, trying to f

Where did she see such confidence from, and how did she develop it?"With your ex? With the man who married another woman? Are you with a married man?" Damien's voice came out as a mixture of anger and concern for her. She could see that all was wrong, but she had to defend herself. What if Damien began to see her as a loose person who did not care about herself? "It is just a friendly date, and I do not think any of this is your business," she murmured, trying to look away. "You do not think any of this is my business?" He said, taking a deep breath as if to stop himself from exploding. "And what is a friendly date?" he asked with a puzzled expression on his face. "Why? I thought you two looked together," Gavin said. He was brimming with so much joy, but he could not show it. He was supposed to be a married man. How did he show so much happiness just because she was going to be with him if all went well? "We were a good match, but he liked me more than I liked him, and in relationships like that, it is hard to keep up, and as I said earlier, I still loved you; I liked you so much that I could not move on," she lied, and her throat felt itchy as she lied so much. "I am a married man," Lila wanted to call his bluff; he was acting hard to get, and to what end? He had been brimming from ear to ear, and now he wanted to act as if he were faithful to his wife. "I know this is wrong, but are you saying that all of the feelings you have for me are all gone?" She asked, and he stood there, watching her. "If you tell me that you do not have a single feeling for me again, I will not disturb you again." Gavin sat there and watched her without a word. "

She looked at him shocked at his actions; she wanted to ask him why he was acting like such a gentleman and standing up when she got into the room. Pulling out the chair for her? She remembered their dates as a couple and how he was always nonchalant towards her. She licked her lips and shook her head, trying to act as if it were normal for him to act like this. "Thank you," she murmured instead of asking him what had come over him. She slipped into the chair, and he put it on a bit before going back to the seat opposite her. She hated the way they had to sit opposite each other and stare into their souls as if nothing was wrong with it. "You are welcome," he replied, taking up the menu and giving it
