"I do not want you to nurture that thought in your mind," Sam said as they sat at the back of the Mercedes-Benz that was driving them home.

"Why are you taking my car home when you did not come in it?" Damien asked, ignoring the many things Sam had been saying since they got into the car.

Sam knew at once that Damien had approached this girl intentionally. There was no way he just managed to stumble on her; his goal was to avenge his fiancee's death, and Sam could not tell how far he could go. He was afraid his friend might end up in jail for doing what he should do.

"Amber would not..." The words were barely out of Sam's mouth when he was backed up to the corner of the car.

His back to the door and Damien's hand on his neck, choking him and staring deeply into his soul. "Come on, man," he let out in a strained voice as he coughed and tried to free himself, but the grip was strong and painful.

"Take Amber's name out of your mouth," Damien let out slowly.

"Why? Just because I mana

Lila woke up that morning, and her mind flashed to what had happened three years ago. It was around the season when she had been bundled to jail, and now she felt a sense of guilt overwhelm her, even though she was very innocent of all the charges that had been brought forth against her.She had the sudden urge to visit the grave site of this lady and seek forgiveness once more, even though she had done that before being thrown in jail. She begged, and they let her go there to apologize for her wrongdoing. She was apologizing that she was not brave enough to make sure that the main culprit served his time; she was apologizing for being too scared to try her best to make sure she was taken to the hospital and maybe she would have survived."Those clothes," Oliver said as Lila walked into the dining room. She walked to the pot of coffee on the table and poured herself a cup before carefully sniffing it and then taking a sip. "Don't tell me it is what I am thinking, Oliver said, dropping

  • Lies Behind Bars: The Hidden Life   BOUND BY GUILT

Damien stood in front of the Voss building as he eyed it up and down. He wondered how he was going to tell Mr. and Mrs. Rosa Voss that their daughter's murderer had been released and that she was roaming freely. Mr. Kevin Voss had blamed Damien for the death even when they convicted the murderer. He had been against their marriage as he wanted her to get married to Oliver Carson since their family was already doing business with the Carsons, but because of how much he loved his daughter, he had to give in when she pestered him and when she was brought back to him dead.He swore never to forgive Damien and that woman for taking the life of his daughter from him. Rosa, on the other hand, did not know how to process the pain, so she just withdrew and became a shell of herself. The Voss family, who were popular for appearances at parties and were part of the socialite group, were suddenly missing from society. He was led in by the butler who said not a word to him; he was just getting to

Daimen stayed a bit with Kevin and Rosa, explaining everything he had gathered and that he planned to make sure that Lila paid. Rosa tried to talk them out of the plotting, but they turned on her."You know if the law said that she was free to go, then maybe she was truly free to go," Rosa said as they all sat down now. Kevin felt like Damie was finally being a bit useful to him so he asked him to sit down. He wanted to hear his plans for revenge so he could support him in any way."So are you saying the law is right for releasing the woman who killed our baby girl?" Kevin asked, turning to Rosa, who was seated between both men."The law has done what it can do best so why do we want to still take matters into our own hands and have blood on them?' she asked, turning from man to man with the hardened expression on their faces."So are you saying that our daughter should not rest in peace?' Kevin asked.Rosa turned to him with an expression of bewilderment on her face. "How can you say

  • Lies Behind Bars: The Hidden Life   INTERTWINED TO MEET

Lila remembered the name from the last party she was at, and she tried to tell her brother that going on that date was not going to work, but he was adamant about it, and she did not want to overly resist and give him a reason not to help her. She did not have any advantage, and she was at his mercy, so she had to do what he wanted, at least for now. She took slow steps as she walked to one of the tables in the coffee shop. Oliver had suggested fancy dining for their blind date, but she had turned it down and asked that they meet in broad daylight and at a coffee shop. She was not going to allow him to have a reason to want to be with her. This blind date had to flop, and she was going to make sure. As soon as she secured her seat, she went up to the counter to get a drink for herself, and since it was blazing hot outside for some reason when it had poured continuously through the night, she got an iced coffee for herself. She sat and waited, hoping he would not show up. She sipped

  • Lies Behind Bars: The Hidden Life   DATED

"That is such a cliche question; do you ask all of your blind dates that?" Lila asked, and he shook his head. "Then why would you ask me something so basic? Do I look basic?" she continued.Damien was only asking that question to be able to gather information on her; that way he would be able to woo her properly, but it seemed like she was intentionally trying to sabotage this date as if she knew that he was onto him. "Why don't you tell me about yourself instead?" she asked before he could refute her claim."About myself?" he asked. He thought in his mind if he should mention that she was the reason he became a hopeless person like this; he wondered if he should tell her that because of her, all the rightness in his life disappeared suddenly. "There is nothing much that isn't on the internet," he said with a smirk on his face."If all I need to know about you is on the internet, then why are we on this date? Why did you ask my brother to set us up?" She asked, and before he could say

"So what do you say about my offer?" Lila asked as they stood outside waiting for her cab to arrive. Damien wondered what kind of girl she was and how she was so simple. He had expected her to show up in some fancy dress and shoes, but she wore an ordinary, no-brand-name t-shirt and a pair of jeans with slip-on tennis shoes. Instead of having one of the drivers at her house pick her up, she was using a taxi service. Damien could not figure her out because it seemed all he knew about her did not match what he saw currently, and he knew that would be much of a hassle for him."I will think about it and you will hear my conclusion from your brother," he said. She nodded as she watched her taxi pull up in front of her and roll down the window."Here for Ms. Carson, the man said, and she nodded with her hands waving in the air."That is me," she said, going to the back seat. Before her hand could touch and pull on the handle, the door opened in front of her. She looked up to him. "I could

"What are you doing here, Sam?" Damien asked as he entered the home office. He had just returned from the date, and he had a lot to do for work, but he was not going to go to work and was going to work from home."How did you know someone was here?" Sam asked, turning the chair, backing the door, and shifting so he could be closer to the table. "Most importantly, how did you know I was the one?" Sam added a bit creeped out that Damien could make out his image in the darkness of the room.Damien walked over to the light switch and turned it on so the light from the bulbs spread through the room. He pointed to Sam's briefcase that was casually sitting on one of the couches in the room. "You are a lawyer; you should know better," he said, walking away from the switch to his desk."And you are a wizard," Sam replied, swaying in the chair from side to side."Get off my chair. I have a lot to do." Damien held the chair in place so that Sam could not shift the chair anymore."Huh!" Sam excla

"Why would I hurt myself?" Damien asked, looking up from the file in his lap to Sam, who sat there staring at him. "I am doing this to relieve myself of the pain I have been feeling for the past three years. Only if I do this can I rest.""Are you sure about that?" Sam asked."Why won't I be sure?" Damien shook his head and flipped the page of the file in hand."Because I do not think that you can achieve peace by doing this.""I have been beating myself up all this while because I have been unable to do anything for Amber; this is the only way I can make that girl pay and still allow Amber to be pleased."Sam wanted to scream at Damien to wake up, but he knew it was going to be a waste of time to do that. He had made up his mind to do this, and anything said now was just going to be like beating a rock. He was not going to find fulfilment or fill the hole with revenge, but he knew that forgiveness was not an option for him with this woman."Tell me the plan," Sam said out of the blue

Tessa asked, leaning in and using her to trace the edge of the table. "Would you like anything to eat or drink?" Damien said instead of answering her. "It's already past ten; I had breakfast," she replied and then added in a low tone. "I am not an animal after all." "I am yet to have breakfast. I guess I must be an animal, but I need breakfast, so I will get you a cup of water and a few pastries for the table," he said, standing up and going to the counter to order. Lila wanted to check on Damien to see if he was hurt in the fight, even if it was most unlikely that anything like that would happen. She was still worried, but how would he believe anything if she was calling him up to check on him after brutally breaking up with him and even going the extra mile to try and convince him that she was done? "I never even got to tell him that I liked him," she murmured to herself. She did not know why it was so important to her, but she wanted to tell him at least once that during their time together she had begun to fall for him before she had to do what was right for herself and her family. THE NEXT MORNING"Damien is asking to meet with me," Tessa said as if she were giving morning updates to the group on the table"Why?" Lila choked out, trying not to sound too excited or curious to hear it. She had to first convince herself that she was capable of getting the job done before she could convince anyone else. Gavin looked at his face in the mirror of his car before turning it off. He felt pain surge through his body. Damien had only punched him once yet but felt like he had gotten beaten up. He walked into the house hoping that Evangeline was already asleep and he did not need to go back and forth with her today. "Why are you just getting back?" "Since when did you care what time I got back?" Gavin was startled by her voice because he had looked around when he got in and had not seen anything but majorly because the entire place was dark. She watched him look around like a criminal ready to steal something when he came in. She wanted to stand in front of him and rain down cursed but held herself back. Tessa had called her and sent images of Gavin with Lila. She told her that she was against it but her daughter was going back to Gavin. If Tessa had not told her to calm down then maybe she would have gotten all rilled up and thrown him out of the house. Tessa promised to get back at Gav

Gavin screamed, tasting blood in his mouth. He spat out what he had been able to pull and moved up to Damien. He knew that he would not be able to win against this man, but the pride he felt in his heart was not going to allow him to back down. "What do you also think you are doing?" Damien asked, closing the gap between them so that they were now touching chest to chest and their faces so close to each other that if they tipped a bit, they might be kissing. "I asked you first; why don't you answer?" Gavin asked. He knew he should not be doing anything like this, but maybe the confidence that Lila was beside him now was giving him some kind of push. "What?" Damien let out a surprised laugh. "You must think that you are a big shot now," he added. "You punched first, and for what?" Gavin's eyes darted around, trying to f

Where did she see such confidence from, and how did she develop it?"With your ex? With the man who married another woman? Are you with a married man?" Damien's voice came out as a mixture of anger and concern for her. She could see that all was wrong, but she had to defend herself. What if Damien began to see her as a loose person who did not care about herself? "It is just a friendly date, and I do not think any of this is your business," she murmured, trying to look away. "You do not think any of this is my business?" He said, taking a deep breath as if to stop himself from exploding. "And what is a friendly date?" he asked with a puzzled expression on his face. "A friendly date; we just met to have dinner; what is so difficult to understand about that?" she asked. She knew she was not supposed to be there holding a conversa

"Why? I thought you two looked together," Gavin said. He was brimming with so much joy, but he could not show it. He was supposed to be a married man. How did he show so much happiness just because she was going to be with him if all went well? "We were a good match, but he liked me more than I liked him, and in relationships like that, it is hard to keep up, and as I said earlier, I still loved you; I liked you so much that I could not move on," she lied, and her throat felt itchy as she lied so much. "I am a married man," Lila wanted to call his bluff; he was acting hard to get, and to what end? He had been brimming from ear to ear, and now he wanted to act as if he were faithful to his wife. "I know this is wrong, but are you saying that all of the feelings you have for me are all gone?" She asked, and he stood there, watching her. "If you tell me that you do not have a single feeling for me again, I will not disturb you again." Gavin sat there and watched her without a word. "

She remembered their dates as a couple and how he was always nonchalant towards her. She licked her lips and shook her head, trying to act as if it were normal for him to act like this. "Thank you," she murmured instead of asking him what had come over him. She slipped into the chair, and he put it on a bit before going back to the seat opposite her. She hated the way they had to sit opposite each other and stare into their souls as if nothing was wrong with it. "You are welcome," he replied, taking up the menu and giving it

As much as she had loved him when they were together, she had self-esteem that was not going to let her do something as stupid as this. "You have been?" she asked, feeling her throat get bitter.
