Kristen's POV

Calhoun didn't return home the rest of the night, and I stayed alone in the room with our son until dawn. Nor did I sleep a week.

As a new mother, resting is required because I lost a lot of blood. I am still losing a lot of blood, but the piece of information from my bodyguard left me in horror throughout the night.

"Miss Kristen, Bruce just texted me that they're at the council hall this morning, and Alpha Calhoun is looking for a way out," Janette informs me later that morning.

"They're still there?" I inquire.

"Yes, Miss Kristen," Janette nods.

And suddenly something slams through my mind.

"I need you to watch Aiden for me," I say, upon pulling away from my son's crib.

"May I ask why?" Janette seems unsure of my order.

"Just do as I say," my voice is loud and authoritative.

And she hesitates before eventually nodding.

Kristen's POV"Time to put up with the attitude," Calhoun tells me immediately after we get home."What attitude?" I am halfway taking Aiden away from the servant. To be honest, I wasn't completely at ease when I left him here alone with the maids. I kept thinking about him, worrying if something would go wrong. And Calhoun waits for all the servants to evacuate from the room before he speaks."Being all strong and valorous, and talking about performing the Luna's rite."Holding Aiden with care, I raise my head to stare at his father."It's my duty, Calhoun. You don't expect me to shy away from it," I am blunt."I know you Kristen and this isn't you," Calhoun has an unsure look on his face, and it's rather upsetting that he's still bringing this up. I thought it all ended at the council hall. "What do you mean by that, Calhoun?" I inquire, ensuring my voice is low because Aiden is awake and cooing, and I don't want to upset him.And it seems like Calhoun is having a hard time telling

Calhoun's POVOne day later…Game of Alphas is the yearly meeting for all Alphas to contend with each other and see who has a higher ranking in terms of power, influence, and wealth. It'd be low of me not to attend as I am Alpha of Alphas in the east. It was through this Game that I rose to power. I have been unbeatable in the past eleven years.Tables are being set for Alphas to compete at the first level, and the head council elder of each pack would meet with the rest to judge the results."Congratulations, Alpha Calhoun. I heard it's a boy.""You're one lucky man."Some Alphas and their betas approached me, immediately I made my presence known. They heard the news about Aiden's birth."I'll bet he'll take after his mom, having your kind of face as an infant would be scary." Someone adds. And there's silence for a few seconds as I try to digest this.My beta stiffens for a few seconds upon thinking I'll pick offense. Not until I laugh and my shoulders shake along with me. Kristen's POVA few hours earlier.I know what today isThe Game of Alphas. It's a yearly contest for all Alphas to see who's fit enough to be prominent. And I know Calhoun will be there because he's the head Alpha in the East. I love him more than life itself, but I've been keeping out of his way since yesterday. He hasn't apologized for calling me weak and insensitive, but his eyes give out that he's sorry when I see him. Still, I am yet to forgive him. It still hurts deeply that his perception of me hasn't changed. He still sees me as a weakling who he's to protect at all cost, because I was dependent on him. Calhoun thinks I cannot carry out the Luna's rite. He's afraid I'll fail and I'll eventually get kicked out of his pack, where he'll have no access to me or Aiden.Speaking of Aiden, I am yet to start breastfeeding him because no milk is spurting from my nipples, so he's living on just milk and water. The situation is bothersome, but the more pressing issue at hand is the Lu

Kristen's POVPresent. The last time I joined a competition was during the pack run. Except that was different and nothing close to this. Game Of Alphas has to do with only Alpha's and even though I am trying to be bold here, I am trembling inwardly. Because I am here to break the rules tonight. Just as the Alpha's are lining up to participate, and the seats for the audience are getting filled up, I notice Calhoun signaling his men to come forward. They talk for some time, with Calhoun staring at me from time to time, with those eerily blue eyes of his. If I wasn't so upset with him, I would have appreciated his looks. But I am here against the rules, all because he called me an insensitive and insecure woman. The words still sting up to this very moment.Calhoun still has his eyes on me as he speaks with his men.I am wondering what he has up to his sleeves until Bruce leaves his side and approaches me with two men."My Luna," Calhoun's Beta, has a small smile playing on his lips. Kristen's POVIt's one thing to have a woman sitting on to my mate and it's another to watch him stay relaxed. Will he get a boner? Grab her boobs or smooch her? She's fucking grinding on him right now, and I don't why I feel like shifting and tearing her into shreds. No wonder Calhoun wanted Bruce to take me away, so I wouldn't witness any of this.My whole body is vibrating from rage and pure jealousy. This is cheating at the highest peak. It's a stupid game after all. How could they bring in half-naked females to seduce and entice these men!? And everyone is out to see. It's like a stupid college party with horny and hormonal teenagers. What the fuck?!"Aiden might need you right now," Bruce nears my side again."You think this would send me running off? Then you must be joking." I growl at him, hating the fact that he seems to relax when Calhoun has a woman on top of him."What if he wants to be nursed?" The smell of his blood will lure the sharks to him if he enters that water. I need to stop him! To hell with the game, I cannot lose Calhoun over anything. Aiden is only three days old for goodness sake."Let me go!" Bruce is already restraining me from going forward, he was quick to capture me upon sensing what I had in mind."You cannot stop Calhoun, he's had a worse experience before," Bruce makes this known to me."He's going to get eaten by the sharks," my voice is shaky, and I can feel my whole body vibrating from fear."You underestimate your m

Calhoun's POVI have never seen anyone so scared for my sake. Had I known Kristen had the intent of coming here today, I would have tied her and locked her up if possible. The fear in her eyes is enough to make me weak but on the contrary, it strengthens me to do more.I passed the stage of swimming with sharks and managed to pass two more stages. Some Alphas who weren't brave enough to continue deliberately failed so they would get disqualified, upon figuring the game was getting horrible. Being the Alpha of Alphas required a lot. Climbing through nets that have hard sharp hooks underneath. Falling off led to death, because the hooks were soaked with black bane poison. The fifth round was more of a puzzle, jumping and sliding to avoid barbells.A few Alphas got their bones broken, and lost their front teeth. So far, five Alphas have died. It's a great loss to their packs and families but these Alphas already knew what they were getting into from the beginning. Ben Gregory, the ann

Kristen's POV"I can explain," my voice is low when Calhoun stops in front of Aiden's crib. Our son is fast asleep but the cut above his eye is close enough to show that the fall could have made him blind. He seems so pure and troubled even in his sleep. And I don't want to think of the times he's cried, yearning for my presence. It's an hour after the Game Of Alphas, and we arrived home like this. Calhoun is still very much shirtless, his bleeding has stopped but he still has the bruises. Mostly on his face"You caused this," Calhoun's voice is quiet with accusation but his gaze is still fixated on our sleeping son, and I can't fail to notice how he's clenching and unclenching his jaw."You never should have left him," Calhoun continues."I know and I'm so sorry," I plead, hating myself for the umpteenth time tonight. And Calhoun shifts his gaze to me, before shooting me a flat look that swiftly forms knots in my stomach."Being sorry changes nothing, our son is hurt because you lef
