We got to the Settlement which was one of the largest I have ever seen very quickly and instead of staying in a house provided for me, I optioned to staying with Sorens in his family home which was still there and his mother too.
I didn’t know what I was expecting when he said I would see his mother but it was not a frail looking woman who looked like she was made of leaves and will be swept away by the wind if the air around her changed.
“Mother.” Sorens hugged her tightly and I was tempted to yell at him not to break her but the woman smiled with tears in her eyes as she hugged him back.
“My son.” She said as she placed a hand on his chest and he closed his eyes as if he was savoring her touch.
When she removed her hand from his chest, she glanced at me and then at her son.
“Who is this?” She asked.
“The queen.” Sorens replied her and when she tried to bow, I stopped her.
“You don’t have to do that
“My queen, is your second in command not joining us?” One of the nobles who gave his name as Anlow said, he was one of the leader of this settlement whose name I had learnt was Magelyn. Apparently that name has been one of the many things which its origin has been lost.I smiled as my heart gave a twinge at the hurt which Sorens must have been feeling but there was nothing I could do about it. It was better I did it this way than I keep on hurting him.“I am sorry but he won’t be able to make it, so please tell me, you said children has been disappearing, I want you to fill me in on what has been happening.“Of course.” The noble nodded. “It started about Five days ago, normally the wood around Magelyn are safe. They have always been. I played in them when I was young as did all of us here did.” Anlow gestured around the table at the rest of the nobles who nodded their agreement.“We don’t think of it when a child goes off to play in the woods
When the sun was high in the sky, we set out for the forest and while this was a new experience for me, I was the only one comfortable into going in the forest, although we were about ten who went and were armed up to our teeth. The rest wore a scared but brave look while Sorens body was filled with tension, than again he was not scared of the danger that lies ahead but rather, he was filled with tension because he wanted to protect me from it.At intervals, I got them to stop and place traps covered with some fallen leaves, some sharp and meant to injure while others were meant to just imprison and do nothing more. The forest was filled with tall trees that had broad leaves and had enough space between them that the forest didn’t look overcrowded or too scanty, I saw the charm in this place, a perfect place for playing with friends and a perfect place for children. I thought so until I reached the river.“This river flows through Magelyn too it c
Throughout the night and into the next morning, none of us slept a wink as we all kept watch. We have learnt our lesson and Anlow was muttering about this forest being out of reach for both children and adults, not like he didn’t believe my words that the Gurumapa was gone but because of the strange yowling we heard, like a cat was injured but from the strength of the yowls, it seemed like a giant cat.“It seems like we would have to check our traps before going home.” I said as the rest groaned, all they wanted was to get out of this place, a place that was home for them before but now has turned into a place where they never knew what was going to pop up.“My queen?” Sorens called.“My lady?” I corrected him and when he looked at me in surprise. I explained. “My queen has turned into your form of special name for me, people will notice. If you are not going to change calling me that then I want you not to hide while doing it too. I want you to c
Part threeWeeks later, I was on my way back to the Palace, I had stayed away for as long as I could but there was no other way for me to prolong my stay anymore. I had run out of excuses and time. Arius sent a messenger to tell me to come home with my second in command and my overgrown pet, his exact words which meant the news of my actions that night and day at the forest had already spread round. I knew that more people would be looking to see me but I was not in the mood to play a good hostess but I didn’t have a choice. It came with the job description of being a Queen.Adela gave a purr as she sensed my mood and I sighed as her rubbed her head.“Why is it that you always dread going back home.” Sorens asked me as he brought his horse and mine to be side by side while I watched from the log which I sat on in the meadows, Adela moved closer to stare at a tree. I was already fond of this horse who didn’t
AriusHaving dreams of Themis turning into a giant cat and eating me for breaking the marriage bargain has been giving me sleepless nights for days since I heard that my dearest wife has made friends with a cat of that kind.Hearing and seeing are two different things and seeing the cat behind my wife, acting like my wife would protect her from all was frightening, especially since Gwenn was already bonded with this cat. I don’t think there was another reason why she would kill a warrior because of her pet.“Gwenn.” I greeted with a smile. “You haven’t been home for an hour and we are already without a warrior.” I said as I folded my hand across my chest.“Arius, I have been gone for only two weeks but it seems like everybody already forgot my temper when those I love are threatened.” She responded mimicking my posture.Arius eyes went to Sorens who stood up and came clos
GwennI entered the hall for dinning and saw Arius relax only for Adela to run in after me and hissed at the passageway.“Will you shut it? If there is anybody that should be here, it is you. You should be outside.” Sorens snaps as Adela, who stood facing him while flicking her tail. Arius relaxed state turned agitated but I dint pay him any mind, I already told him, if he didn’t want Adela near his future child, he should remove Faye from my path and she was at the table.“You two bicker too much.” I said as I used my hand to run Adela as I passed her to my seat while she waited for Sorens. A closeness I appreciated although it was not easy at the original stage. They might have a game of cat and mouse going on but they were extremely close.“Is the cat going to eat with us?” Catia asked alarmed.“Mngwa.” I corrected and she paled even more. “Adela likes it when she is addressed properly and besides nobody should
Kastav PovThe time was right, there is discord between the king and the queen. Now was the best time for me to act. To bring myself closer to the throne. My blood was better than his, Yet he remained my father’s favorite, I had the best marks in everything we did.I was better than him and yet just because of the love for his mother, he became king while I was stuck as a prince. We were born the same day but I was cursed not to reach the king’s post. I was meant to only see it.Even curses can be changed.I formed out of the shadows of my father’s room as I watched while he struggled to breathe. Give it a few more weeks and he would be no more. That was the position, I place him in. To be slowly wasting away while not be able to do anything and knowing that there was no salvation coming, just death.Well death was here, in form of his younger heir to the throne. I needed to remove this Yama and cause havoc between my brother
GwennI had not left Arius side since the news of his father’s death reached him. They don’t take long in hold their funerals and when the death is brutal or a forbidden type which was the killing of someone defenselessly, which the king certainly was, it takes a new dimension in quickness. Within Twelve hours, the pyre was set and the rites were read. The mood was somber and I took my place among other commanders of the army, I learnt that the commanders were always around the palace unless being sent on missions for the king.I was standing there, paying my respects to the king but Arius came and yanked me to his side which was the very front of the small crowd gathered to honor his father and pay their last respects before saying goodbye to the King before he starts his journey to the afterlife.“Your place is with me, my queen. You are not just a commander or a foreigner, you are now the queen, start acting like it.” He growls at me and because
24 YEARS LATER. Gwenn Pov “I want to run a sword through you so badly that the feeling is visceral. After all these years together I cannot believe you still are a bigoted two timing jerk.” I yelled as I stormed into the throne room, Arius behind me. “I am Yama, I cannot be seen as the fool being controlled by the Alal. It would undermine my ruling…” Arius tried explaining but he just made me even more furious than usual. “Your ruling… I am right and the whole kingdom is aware of that, the forgotten world should not be explored.” “It has been over twenty years. I know that you don’t want it to be explored and that was why I came up with the suggestion that I did. Let it be explored by a selected group of youth, freed from the machinations of the council and led by our children. But you had to spoil it by talking out of turn.” “Did you hit your head without my knowledge?” I asked surprised. Whatever makes
Gwenn Pov“You and Orel will soon be going back won’t you?” I asked. Throughout that day, I had caught Themis and Orel sent each other glances.“Yes. We have to, our work here is almost done and we need to go back.” Themis answered. She would have given me more information but I had a feeling she stopped because I was no longer their citizen. I was now a Northerner. So was she but her loyalty lies with Dar because she was married to one of the rulers.“Almost?” I asked her.“Yes we still have one more task to do. Your curse has been broken and Arius own also has, the empire is slowly flourishing and getting itself back. It has been just three months but the repairs are almost done. Northshorians certainly do not let anything keep them down for long.”I winced at her words.“We prefer Northerners.” I answered as she smiled. “But I stil
Arius Pov I cannot believe that I slept through the period where my country was hijacked and my brother was possessed by an evil spirit that eventually killed him. Kastav was not evil, all he was, was greedy. Maybe I could have prevented this if I had listened to Gwenn warning at first. Gwenn thinks the death of others were on her but she could not be further from the truth. They were on me.Gwenn was Alal, her role was to keep the peace, mine was to fight if the peace was threatened. She was a foreigner and she had no vested interest in saving Northshore but she still did. She had nothing to feel, no weight to carry.I was supposed to carry them all because I could have prevented the death of my sister and Sorens and my councilors too but I did not. I chose to ignore the words of a seer. My fault but now, things are strange and Northshore us not as we know it to be. Old records are being dug. T
Gwenn Pov“You have to stand up and stop moping.” Orel started. “You have been lying in bed for two days now, you don’t have the luxury of lying around, not when you have a kingdom to restore and a husband to find.”“Sorens is dead Orel. He died because of my order that he should protect the king, if he is dead than Arius also is.” I stated as I sniffled while holding on to Elison’s hand while he laid beside me.“But…” Orel started but I grew annoyed.“Only three council members remaining, my husband dead, Sorens dead and his siblings, four dead. These are only the deaths I am aware of, excluding a legion which is dead and you are trying to tell me that I am not at fault. If I never came here, this would never have happened. This is all my fault.” I screamed at Orel and when Elison face wrinkled as he ope
Themis PovI had appeared at the right time. Gwenn was in shock, staring at a body on the ground. Without looking at the body, I knew that it was Silana, one of the blind spots in my gift. A blind spot that might have saved the world.“Would you look at that, the same way I killed Sorens, I also killed that brat. The next on the list is you.” Kastav crackled as he moved towards Gwenn in a leisured pace.I could not allow that to happen, there was not much I could do except throw a dagger, which I collected from Orel, his way. I needed to get Gwenn to snap out of her mind and tell her what I learnt. She needed to tap into my gift so she could win. When the dagger met its mark, I ran towards Gwenn even as he grunted.“You.” He growled as he sent something my way but it never had the chance to reach me becau
Themis PovI was tired of falling. I have been falling for what felt like hours now because since Kastav sent us into the portal he created, I have not been able to stop falling. My only consolation is that Orel and my son has been on the same length as me, no one of us ever leaving the same length so we could keep each other in the same eyesight. That should have been the first marker for me but I had ignored it. We stopped shouting when the fall did not stop and even started conversing and that was when something different happened.“I wish this would just end soon.” Orel grated.“It should have ended because we are not of the same weight and yet we are still falling at the level of falling.” I voiced“My wife must be tired of viewing my face since she wants me to fall faster.” Orel replied wryly.“No, that is not it.
Catia povMy brother is possessed by a drude. That alone makes him unable to rule but I would not be the person to tell him that, not when the last few people who did, died. I now know why Silana said I was the biggest scum at Kastav side. I pushed him to this. If I had allowed him to be contented with his life when he was just a prince and stop his ambitions then maybe this would have never happened. And now I was on my way to see my favorite brother who killed three of my other brothers and made me his queen. The only time I was ever this scared was when Father became ill and even then, he was present to calm me down but who is going to calm me of my fear from him.“You took your time.” Kastav growled the minute I entered the throne room. A room that has become his favorite in the castle even though he hardly do anything in it.“I got the message le
I wanted to ask so many questions, so badly but I could not. My tongue was tied as I watched the entity that was partly inside me since. I apparently crossed the world of the living to their world. I had passed through a physical gate and landed myself here both body and spirit.“Am I still alive?” I questioned.“Yes.” She laughed. “Very much so. Oh how I wished that I could get to spend time with you and know you, my newer self but I cannot. Time has ran out and our world is in jeopardy. Both of our worlds. You need to defeat Mazikeen but for that to happen, we need to go back to the beginning because for the future to be safe once more, the genesis of it all has to be known. Are you ready?” She asked.I nodded my replied. I have been ready ever since I started this journey.“Mazikeen did not go out looking for power, he stumb
“What is going on?” Catia approached me the moment, I entered. I watched as our other siblings eyed us, my brothers especially. They must have guessed what was.“What mother wanted for me.” I replied my sister. I watched as Catia eyes farrowed as she tried to reason what I said. I saw the exact moment she understood. The joy in her gaze and then she hugged me.“I am happy brother. Congratulations.” She replied before she went back to our siblings.I walked to the throne, the direction which everybody was facing and in front of everybody, I sat down in the seat meant for Yama. Utter silence filled the room, regardless of the people in it. All eyes on me as they realized that this was me over throwing my brother.“Any questions?” I asked.“What about the king…” A Mareikura asked
