"We're here." A nervous whisper.
I couldn't hear anything from behind the doors, which made me assume they were soundproof.
We stood on regal red carpets that had its sides lined with gold thread. A single chandelier hung down, lighting the narrow hall.
Nayla bowed before me, and with a quiet 'Goodluck' she was gone.
Facing the doors, I dragged in a deep breath. And knowing I may, or may not, regret my next action, I shoved open the door.
Stunned gazes instantly reverted towards me. A wide hall filled with wide-eyed Nobles greeted me. They were all frozen in various acts of speaking and movement, one's mouth hung ajar, while another paused in gesturing at the large map on the table.
Walking deeper into the white-themed hall, I said offhandedly, "Oh, don't stop on my account, continue with the meeting."
At the head of the tabl
I didn't hear a sound, but yet I snapped into consciousness.I was not alone.Blinking past the last traces of sleep clouding my vision, I searched around the room, feeling the hairs on my nape rise. Turning right, I froze when I caught sight of whiskey grey eyes staring at me from the darkness. At length his silky voice commanded, "Come here."My ears twitched when I caught the note of barely leashed anger lacing his words.Gently pushing the duvet away from my body, I stood.Feeling his intense stare on me, I slowly went over to him, glaringly aware of the thin nightwear I had on. The attack on my old pack had made it impossible for me to retrieve my belongings; so I was stuck with the clothes they had here; and boy were
The wide outdoor patio was awash with clean breeze and vibrant greenery. The skies were clear, the weather mild. At a secluded corner, a pianist played the piano, producing soft, relaxing tunes. My court were all on their feet, waiting. As I strode down the concrete, some turned and looked at me expectantly, some puzzlingly, while others, with thinly concealed malice.Taking my seat at the head of the table, Nayla came to stand beside me. An action every Noble's personal omega immediately mirrored, taking their positions beside their mistresses; I couldn't help noting they were all older than Nayla."Good morning," I began, then waited for the file of omegas that had just entered to finish setting the table. A cup of steaming hot tea before me, I continued, introducing myself, "Hello, everyone, I'm Hilda Miller from the Stillmoon pack."A tall, blonde-haired Noble with a dainty air about her looked me up from over the rim of her cup, her eyes
The search for the pack's treasurer, William Woods, as I'd learnt his name was, had proved surprisingly difficult. It'd almost seemed like he'd been avoiding us, although I didn't fault him for doing so; I was going around looking for trouble. When finally we found him, we'd knocked on the door of his sprawling cottage, night fast catching up with us. The door had flung open, revealing his paternal form, only to get slammed back in our faces. I'd played the Luna card. He'd reluctantly come out: my willing subject--albeit not so willing. After he'd let us in, he asked us to state our business.I'd done so. "I want to know the address of the vampire rogue.""No can't do, Luna," he'd pressed firmly. We'd agonizingly gone back and forth after that, Nayla's apprehensive gaze flitting between the both of us. I'd used every threat I had in my ammunition: food, water, freedom to run in the
I shut my eyes, and after hesitating for an embarrassing amount of time, I unhooked my bra, letting it fall to the floor. When I heard his rough intake of breath, I pried my eyes open, letting my gaze fall on him. The fierce possessives in his eyes staggered me."On the bed, Hilda."A jolt of pleasure ran through me at the use of my name. I made to get on the bed but paused, motioning to the thong I still wore. "And this?""It stays on," he said.I asked no questions. I proceeded to climb onto the bed, but in a split second I was thrown on my back, my hands pinned above my head; Vaughan hovered over me. I licked my lips nervously, my breaths quickening. He leaned down, his chest just shy of making contact with mine. His hot breath fanned the side of my face when he rumbled, "Do you know why?""Why what?" My face heated at the breathy note of my voice. His thumb suddenly went to my hip, and I near bucked at the sizzle of c
"I guess there really is an advantage to every disadvantage, Miss."My voice sounded as dull as I felt. "Care to share?"Nayla beamed, saying, "Your outburst. It's led Miss Robyn and Miss Genevieve arrange a fighting class for you. In preparation for the duel tomorrow.""Oh, goodie."Nayla gradually dimmed. "Is anything wrong?"With unintended force, I fluffed my pillow roughly, imagining it was Vaughan's face. He didn't even leave so much as a letter. Just up and went like... Like yesterday meant nothing to him.My eyes widened and a new fear gripped me. I'd said I wouldn't attach any sentiments to our fooling around.... I couldn't be doing so now, could I? Stupid, I thought to myself, I was so stupid."It's a secret arrangement," Nayla was saying. "So we'll have to follow the omegas entrance when going. And," she added, hol
That late evening I had the shock of my life when I went up to my room, and saw Vaughan sitting on my bed, waiting.Stood at the door, I took a moment to look at him. He wore a casual white shirt over dark jeans. The material of his shirt stretched over his wide chest, his hot jeans hugging his strong calves. While I ogled him, I failed to note that his eyes were turning an angry yellow. When I did, he'd invaded my personal space, suddenly grabbing my arm in a bruising grip.Shocked, I struggled against him. "Let me go, you...creep! What is wrong with you?""Where were you?" he snarled.Psycho! I thought, snapping, "Hanging at Robyn's place! Now let me go.""No," he growled in my face. "Not until you tell me why I scent a male allover you?"My gaze widened in realization. Because I'd been fighting with one.
"I think... I think this is the dress," Nayla whispered reverently.A resigned breath escaped me. "You've thought about ten dresses 'were the dress,' Nayla."She pursed her lips. Then said with a wave of her hand towards my direction. "No, but I'm sure this one is. It's simple, elegant and just...perfect."Removing my hands from my waist where I'd kept them in exasperation, I took in myself before the full length mirror, agreeing to her statement after a while, "It is perfect." The skirts of the simple blue evening gown fell down to the floors in a pool of fine, watery silk. The strapless gown--that looked demure from the front--had an open back that stretched down to my waist. Wicked.I took it off, letting Nayla do my makeup and style my hair. She talked as she worked, "Goddess, this is really exciting! I wonder how you must feel right now. Oh what I would give to be in your shoes righ
"Twice when you were on the verge of coming yesterday, your eyes had flashed bright teal. Care to explain why?"My mouth opened, then closed right back again. There was no need for me to hide my abilities from Vaughan or anyone here-- like I had done with father and my former pack-mates at Stillmoon. I reasoned to hide it here would be pointless, where I could quite possibly remain forever. It was better to get it out in the open first before they found out and thought I was some imposter.I made to answer him then but was cut short when our drinks arrived. After the waiter had gone, Vaughan faced me again. "So?""So," I said. "I was getting to it."I positioned an empty glass in front of me. Fiddling with it, I said, "The things is, I don't know why. It's been that way since I was little." When I was seven and could 'make flowers da
[Dedicated to Hermes and KLH♥] __ (seven years later...) Vaughan made to approach me, but was intercepted by a bunch of running, squealing werewolf children, causing him to loose his balance a bit. He precariously steadied himself, hands clutching at the tiny legs around his shoulders. I giggled openly, which led to him shooting me a glare, and then a heated look that promised some punishment tonight. I reacted instantly, breaths slowing. The little hand in mine tightened, making me glance down. My five year old son, Zach, looked up at me, saying, "Mum, I wanna go play with them." He pointed ahead. Looking up, my gaze landed on a group of male werewolves around his age running around the wide lawn. Grownups wove their way around the excited mass, carrying with them heavy bags containing party stuffs. The jamboree organized by my residential firm was in full swing, and everyone was having the time of their lives. Every homeless werewolf under my care. My heart swole. They'll neve
The heady smell of flowers filled my nose as I came to.On blinking open my eyes, I realized I was in a bright garden straight out of a fairytale. Vibrant green surrounded me and the melodious chirps of birds filled my ears. The garden seemed to exude a peaceful mien, and serenity slipped into me, calming my nerves tremendously.Standing, I looked around, walking along the path filled with vines and scrambling badgers. "Hello?"Where was I? I wondered internally as I walked on. My head whipped around at sound of leaves rustling.A woman who could've easily been the most beautiful in the planet approached me.As she drew nearer, I realized in surprise that her features alternated between several others. One second her eyes were green, the next moment they were a striking amber. One second her hair was midnight black, and the next they were gleaming blonde. But in all, her face maintained one look, if that even made sense."Who are you?" I breathed out.Her voice seemed to fill every por
Breaking out of the forest, I ran into a hunter. When he rose his pistol to strike me, I grabbed his hand and twisted, flipping him over. Still holding onto him, I kneed his face multiple times until I felt his hand go slack in mine.Breaths heaving, I continued on, tearing another hunter away from a bleeding werewolf and punching her with the heel of my palm. She staggered backwards and when she regained her footing, she feinted right and threw a punch at me, catching me off guardIt landed square on my face, knocking me down on my butt. She drew her arm back again, but I caught it in my grip, headbutting her so she staggered away, falling. When yet another hunter came at me, I focused my gaze on him, twisting his arm backwards until I heard a snap and he toppled down, landing on the werewolf the female hunter had been attacking. The werewolf shifted into its human form now and I saw it
Before we arrived at the huge clearing the next day, trackers were sent to the venue to scope it out and ensure there were no traces of Vladimir's men or pitfalls. The air bit into my tight skin, making chills that weren't entirely from the cold slide down my spine. I sucked in a breath, looking around me. We were all set.At one section of our large, formidable assembly were werewolves that had shifted into their beasts. Protective armors were strapped around their intimidating forms, and so were the ones of the werewolves that had yet to shift. I flexed my gauntlet, feeling the leather abrade my hands.Vaughan had stationed numerous werewolves around me, so much so that I couldn't look straight ahead without rising on my toes. A low murmur rose in the crowd and I rose on my toes now to see what had incited it.The fey had arrived. They seemed to step out of an invisible portal, until there was a whole army of them.Their pristine blue robes were
Some Elders, along with a bunch of werewolf enforcers, were sent out to the fey dimension, and before evening we received word back. They were going to honour the pact. The rest of the day was spent training rigorously, and welcoming Alphas from different packs along with their warriors. The evening sun glistened on the bare backs and corded arms of the training warriors. Vaughan stood before them, shirtless. His muscles flexed deliciously as he practiced, sweat sliding down his toned abs--"Focus, Hilda," the Seer said for the umpteenth time.I snapped my attention back to her, smiling apologetically. Robyn sat a distance behind her, spooning some ice cream into her mouth. She winked at me understandingly. Fighting a blush, I focused on the matter at hand, lifting a particularly large boulder."Focus." The Seer's tone was calm. "Search within you for your strength and channel it, shape it, control it..."Taking in a deep breath, I outstretc
That afternoon, whatever potion Vladimir had given the warriors wore off, and they bustled around the frantic hall now, readying for battle. The atmosphere was charged with a fear so palpable it seemed to contaminate everyone.Even now, as I looked out the high windows of my room, I felt apprehension settle in my chest. It heightened when I replayed Vladimir's last words to me. Maybe the demons were part of his alliance. And asides that, he had made mention of his Link? I briefly wondered what exactly Ines's abilities were, the image of the warehouse collapsing clear in my mind. The Seer had said she'd play an important role in the war.Propping my elbows on the sill, I released a sigh, listening to Vaughan shrug into his clothes. Before heading out, he came over to me and wrapped his arms around me from behind, placing a long kiss on his mark on my neck.
"Yes, it's me." Her voice sounded rushed, panicked. "Hil, there's something you need to know."I let out a shocked breath. "I thought you were dead!" Vaughan instantly threw me a glance, his gaze questioning. She exhaled impatiently. "Well, technically I am. But that's not the point!" She sucked in a breath. "Did you put Jim at the gates?"My brows furrowed in confusion. "What?""Jim. I asked if you put him at the gates. If you did, then you guys better head back to Beastclaw now!"I sat up straighter. "What? Why?""He's the one who told the vampires our pack's location in the first place. And if my guess is correct, he's gone to the Beastclaw pack to play spy for the vampires and let them in as well."Blood rushed out of my face. "Why would he do that?""It's a long story, but you've got to go back now! Don--oh no, he's coming.""He? Who i--"The line abruptly went dead. I stared down at my phone, a mixture of sh
As we neared the warehouse, the prickling sensation filled me once again, and I had a suspicion that if I followed my instincts it'll lead me straight to the Link.A suspicion I tested as we bursted into the warehouse, and into a coven of vampire lackeys in the process.Immediately, they attacked, their movements a bit slow due to the fact they were just newly turned.Vaughan changed into his wolf with a roar, throwing his weight into the herd, clawing out hearts and biting off heads--literally.Vampires approached me, their eyes glowing a frighting shade of red. I pointed my gun at them and shot blindly. Some went down, some just shrugged off the bullets, flying towards me with a dangerous speed. When claws dug into my shoulders, I let out a scream, my pistol clattering to the floor. Vaughan was at my side immediately, jumping the vampire until they both landed on the dusty ground, rolling roughly until their backs were coated in dust.In one lethal move, Vaughan dug his canines into
Feeling sore, the next day I awoke to see grey eyes fixed on my neck with an unnerving intensity.A knuckle slowly ran down the side of my face. "You're awake," he said softly. With a yawn, I said, "Yes, Sherlock." It was a mercy I'd even managed to sleep at all, what with Vaughan's insatiable appetite. An involuntary blush warmed my cheeks at all we'd been up to last night, and his sharp eyes drew on it like a magnet. His gaze lit with amusement and something darker. "A penny for your thoughts?" he asked."How about a treasure chest full of diamonds instead?" I asked, pushing off the bed."I could arrange that," he said, following along as I went into the shower. When I made to shut the door in his face, he stopped my actions with a foot. He rose a brow. "I like to save water around here."With a roll of my eyes and a reluctant curl of my lips, I opened the door wide, letting him in.Then we proceeded to shower together, but not before he backed me up against the wall and did wicked
