JAVIER

"Okay the truth is I came here for you" I watched as her face scrunched up in confusion. I burst into laughter.

"Haha, very funny" she said sarcastically.

"Fine don't tell me" she started the car and drove to our Cabin. The short drive was silent but it was a comfortable silence;it was soothing. I can't tell her the reason I came here cause even I don't know the reason. I just needed to get out. My voicemail is probably filled by now with messages from friends at school, basketball team and maybe Lucy. I doubt my dad even cares about where I am. Lucy might show concern but I know it was all an act. She was just trying to get close to my father so she could flaunt his riches. I clenched my fists in annoyance. I heard my name and turned to see Marina looking at me with concern in her eyes.

"Are you okay?" I'm not.

"I'm fine. Why do you ask?"

"Cause I've been calling your name for sometime. Also we're here" she got out of the car and got into the Cabin.

I followed her inside and looked around. A lounge area with coffee brown chairs, a center table, a couple bean bags and a fireplace-typical. It looked cozy. In one corner of the room, a little island divided the kitchen from the rest of the lounge. Marina went over to the kitchen. I went further into the Cabin through the hallway and checked the rooms.

"I call dibs on the first room on the left"I announced as I entered the lounge. Marina was already stuffing her face with chips, I wonder where she got it from.

"Where is your stuff?"she asked with a mouthful. She looked cute sitting there stuffing her face with chips. Her sparkling blue eyes staring intently at me. "A friend of mine is bringing it over" I replied. "By the way you don't get to call dibs. I do"she said her long, black hair in a ponytail bouncing around. "I said it first." She groaned in annoyance.

Later in the evening, there was a meeting of all Camp Coordinators with Camp Ranger. He was basically telling us the rules and regulations of the camp, camp timetable and listed activities; basically camp orientation package. He also told us to take care of the little ones when they arrive tomorrow. Looking around, I can estimate the Camp coordinators to be 15-20 people. After the meeting, a bunch of girls crowded around me. I tried to extract myself from them but they were quite clingy. Not to brag, but I know I'm hot. I managed to get away from them eventually, I tried to find Marina but Mr Barnaby called me aside.

"Javier my boy, I would like for you meet my niece, Bianca."

"Bianca, this is Javier. He's like a son to me." She smiled at me and I smiled in return.

"Bianca, here will give you a small tour of Eastern Springs since its your first time here." He smiled and left us. I groaned mentally as I realized what he was doing. I like to think of Mr Barnaby as a father but sometimes, he gets on my nerves.

 MARINA

After the meeting, everyone separated into clusters talking to their friends. Just like high school. But this isn't high school so I will try to interact. I walked up to a group where Scarlet was talking to her friends.

"Hi" I greeted awkwardly. I was so out of my element.

"My name is Marina."

"I'm sorry but do we know you?" Scarlet asked. Before I could get a word out, someone cut in. "Don't you know its rude to interrupt people's conversations" a short girl with dyed purple hair piped up.

"So as I was saying before I was so rudely interrupted-." I backed away from them. Okay this was a bad idea. What was I thinking, this may not be high school but these are high school students. I tried to look for a friendly face I could talk to but there was none in sight. Going to my cabin seemed like a good choice. On my way to my Cabin, I saw Javier huddled up against some Blondie. He is looking for trouble if he thinks he can cheat on my best friend. I may not look like much but I'm a pretty bad ass myself. I was going over there to give him a piece of my mind when a boy got in my way.

"Hey"I looked at him.

"I'm Nick" he extended his arm and I took it. His handshake was quite firm for a guy who looked like he didn't work out much. He retracted his hand and pushed a brown lock from his forehead. As he did that, he looked strangely familiar but I couldn't where I'd seen him. He must have noticed my look of confusion.

"We met at the S.a.M, Science and Math convention sometime last year. You represented your school in the science exhibition and I was in the coding." It hit me like a truck as the memories come flooding back.

"Yeah I remember you now. But you wore glasses then."

"I got contacts. So you here as a Camp coordinator?"

"Yeah. You?"

"Same" he didn't look like someone who gets out much. I know most people like to think I'm a nerd but there are other nerds out there whose social life is 0.0. At least I have a social life. I suddenly realized I was staring.

"Sorry for staring but you like the kind that don't get out much." I regretted those words as soon as it left my mouth. But he just smiled and I felt relieved. I thought I had offended him. The only person who bothered to talk to me and not treat me like some invisible thing.

"Yeah I look like the kind that don't get out much. But I do. They kinda hired me as some sort of IT guy to help around with stuff."

"So like you're being paid?" I was surprised.

"Yeah, kinda like a summer job." He shifted uneasily.

"But don't tell anyone, they might freak out if they find out I'm being paid." I nodded and he visibly relaxed.

"Why don't I show you around. You're a new face we don't get that much people volunteering to spend their summer at camp."

"Really, so almost everyone here is an old-timer." He nodded, no wonder they connected so easily. They've been camping here together for some time now. I felt like an intruder.

"Let me introduce you to some of my friends before I give you the official tour." He said smiling. I nodded eagerly glad at the prospect I made a new friend and with some luck I might make more new friends.

JAVIER The screams and laughter of children filled the surroundings as the excited children alighted their bus. I think I'm gonna get a headache. I tried to search for Marina, I saw her talking to some guy. It was the same guy from yesterday. I don't like him, I don't know why but I don't. I was happy for the fact Bianca was among the team helping the kids. I don't think I can stand another minute of her endless rant without yelling at her to shut up. That would not bode well for her, her uncle and I. The fact that Lily Cabin was small meant it only needed two coordinators and a minimal number of children. Some people would call me mad. I mean look at my life. I claimed I needed peace and an escape from it all yet here I am at camp. As a camp coordinator for kids. And everybody knows kids are far from quiet. Which brings to mind the question 'why am I here?' I think the better question would be 'how did I know Marina would be here?'. Before I could answer that thought, Mari

JAVIERMarina is full of so many surprises. Her bluntness when I called her out on avoiding me was incredible. She was definitely staring and admiring my physique. I like the fact that she's not immune to all my charms. I'm glad we were together for the day and that Nick guy was nowhere around her today. Before we reached the lake, one of Nick's friend called her aside. Julya! My phone beeped, I pulled it out to check it. It was a message from my teammate.JB: Dude, where are you? You know you're our star player here and you just disappeared. You better get your ass down here.Of course, my teammates are worried. I'm probably off the grid. I need to sort out myself first, I ignored the message. From the corner of my eye, I saw Bianca approaching. Its now or never! She flung her arms around me and pecked my lips. I noticed Marina watching us with a frown. "Bianca, can we talk?" I shrugged her hands off me. "Sure, whatever about" she replied grinning. I took her arm and led her away fr

JAVIEREastern Springs Summer Campout Experience was really what I needed. I'm so glad that for once my impulse decision turned out great after all. The kids were not so bad, I had made some friends. I have spent almost two weeks out here. I was getting distress calls from home but I ignored them. Here I felt alive. I was looking forward to the bonfire night. I planned to take Marina stargazing before the bonfire starts. She was beginning to grow on me.Despite the inhibitions she has about me, she's letting down her guard little by little. But sometimes I can't help but wonder what will happen when camp is over and school reopens. What's gonna happen to us, is she going to go back to being in the shadows? Is our friendship going to continue? Are we ever going to be together? And then there's Britney and Mason. I shoved those thoughts out of my mind as I approach our Cabin and find the kids running around as usual. I wonder where she is because she's always watching them to ensure no

JAVIER Hiking! We were gonna hike to a certain campsite in the woods to camp! Very ironic or what, I'm not really sure what figure of speech to use here. But what I know for sure is that it sucks. The trail we were hiking through was covered in mud and tree branches. We had to walk carefully in two lines, if we were not careful, we would slip and land in the slimy mud. All the while avoiding tree branches whacking you in the face. Trudging through the mud, we marched to the campsite. Some coordinators had been lucky enough to stay behind and watch the kids, Lucky! The mud and tree branches eventually gave way to plain ground and open area. We were so grateful that there was a stream nearby, we were dehydrated from that hike. I would always prefer treadmill, jogging, crunchies to a long, tedious and boring hike. Although the hike wasn't boring, I made good time by talking to Marcus. He was a real fun guy to talk to, although he tells lame jokes. But his stories are hilarious, i

JAVIER We were stuck in an abandoned cabin with little hope of anyone finding us. Even if they realized we were missing, which they would because the two coordinators of Lily cabin are missing, they might not find us. It was a miracle we actually found the cabin but we couldn't leave. Marina's ankle was sprained from the nasty fall and she could barely limp. I found some bandages in one of the cabinets, I didn't pay attention during the first aid lessons on our first day here. My mind was preoccupied with thoughts of my family and the horrible dinner and the basketball program that was basically my future. Marina didn't know what to do, so I tied the bandages round her ankle, and formed a knot. I didn't know the name of the knot, cause I was also absent minded during the rope lessons but I could knot any rope to suit the situation it was called for. "Thanks Javier" Marina said when I was done. She sneezed due to the dusty cabin, but I thought her sneeze was kinda...kinda cu

JAVIER I was so glad we were back to the main camp. Marina was finally getting treatment for her sprained ankle and will be able to walk soon. While we were gone, Tommy had gotten a rash from poison ivy and was also getting treated. I was so happy that the other kids were alright. Nick and I finally get along in a civil way but I still don't like him. On my way to the cabin after checking on Marina in the dispensary, I saw a bunch of people hanging a banner above the doorway of Mess hall. "What's that about?" I asked. "Hey Javier, there's gonna be a dance later tonight. It was announced yesterday but you were not around, so get ready. It starts at 7pm" Julya replied and resumed her work. A dance! The idea sounds kinda lame but so is the idea of the entire camp. Back at the cabin, I was about to take a bath when I heard a beep from my phone, alerting me of a new message. From my........dad. Dad: We are coming to get you. So get ready, you'll be coming home tomorrow. That was

JAVIERSunday afternoon came with plans to hangout with Mason at one of our spots. A pizza joint to be exact. We had several spots across town where we hung out, this was a personal favorite of Mason. I was about to step out of the front door when my dad’s voice halted my movements.“Where are you going?” I turned to face him.“Out” I deadpanned.“I don’t like the sound of ‘out’.”“So now my movements are restricted?” I fired back.“When your movements become quite as uncertain as disappearing from existence, I think it calls for some restriction.” Seriously, I wasn’t in the mood to argue with him but he just had to bring that up.“I just wanna go out and grab some pizza. It’s not like I’m gonna elope or something.”“We’re having a family dinner by 7pm. Don’t be late” he said, warning evident in his voice.“As if we’re even a family” I mumbled.“What was that?” he thundered.“Dinner as a family, that’s what I said.” That reply seemed to satisfy him so I left the house.I got a text f

MARINA So glad my shift at the café was in the morning. It made the rest of the day free for me. I got out of bed early so I could do my chores quickly and get to work. Breakfast wasn’t even ready when I left home. Shift at the café was brief and uneventful. I got my first pay today as well. I agreed to get paid weekly.“Have a nice weekend” Mrs. Allen smiled as she signed the paybook.“You too, Mrs. Allen” I replied.I thought about what I would do with the rest of my time and homework seemed like a good idea. Homework, study and possibly watch a movie. No plans of going out whatsoever. Breakfast or should I say late brunch was waiting for me when I got home. It was actually weird cos for a long time, breakfasts are no longer a thing in our home. Mom would be recovering from her hangover in the morning and trying to get to work, she didn’t have time to make breakfast.Besides no one ate breakfast anymore. Dad would say ‘’I’m running late. I will grab a bite in the office.’’ Mason di

JAVIERShe paled in shock as our eyes met. I didn’t bother waiting for her reaction before storming away. I was so blinded by rage, I bumped into someone.“Watch it” I noticed it was Marina, I cringed as I saw her frown.“I’m sorry, I wasn’t looking at where I was headed”“Obviously” she huffed. Despite the frown on her face, she was beautiful. Come to think of it, what was doing here? I had never seen her at a party. I was about to say something when I heard Britney call my name. I remembered I was supposed to be angry.“Later” I breathed and walked out.Britney was hot on my heels as I left the house. I walked to my car, I could hear the sound of gravel crunching under her heels.“Javier, I can explain” “I’m sorry”“Please listen to me”“Baby please answer me”I didn’t glance at her as I got into my car and drove to Troy’s house.MARINAA whole school week had gone by and I hadn’t spoken to Javier. MARINA Today was such an interesting day or as interesting as my day could get. I met with the Science hub at lunchtime and there was a lot of catching up to do. There were classes the usual school stuff. After school, I watched Olivia at her soccer tryouts which she totally aced. I'm so proud of her. I have zero sporty skills, the genes favored Mason on that note. There were other girls trying out for the girl's soccer team probably for their college application or what not. Olivia was excited about joining their team, she was asst. captain at her last school. She really loves the sport. I thought I saw Javier in the crowd but I doubt that. Why would he be here? His sport is basketball not soccer. My eyes must be playing tricks on me. "Marina, I made the team" Olivia screamed at me. They had dismissed them. "I know, I'm so happy for you" "Their captain and coach, they seem nice" "Did you expect mean bullies?" "No but its hard letting anyone join your team last minute." "I get

I had a replay of the entire day as I lay in bed.Recalling first day of school, I can barely wait for the school year to be over. While they spent time at the beach, I spent mine hiking muddy trails. While they were getting their hair and nails done, I was getting kids to go to bed. They were having the time of their life while I dewormed dogs at the pet clinic. I enjoyed Eastern Springs Campout but after listening to everyone recount their summer experiences, I really hoped no one would ask me what I did over the summer.Britney was so excited about her delightful summer, partying and training with the cheerleaders. They are finally going to let her perform with them at the games. On one hand, I'm happy for her. On the other, I'm kinda mad she was MIA all summer. She just laughed it off."Marina, I'm really
