There was no ring or watch on the hand but there were tattoos on it. That was not the strangest part. It was a heavy hand which meant that it would take considerable amount of skill and strength in order to slice the hand in this way.

“So it was just lying here in this way?” asked Susan as she looked at the hand still not convinced that this was all the part of one incident which had no head or tail whatsoever.

“Yeah, fresh and warm meat like that with the scent of blood that would mean that rats would have been pretty quick to make a nice clean work of it,” replied the cop whose name Susan did not even bother to remember.

“No nibbles here, as I can see,” said Susan and she turned towards Bill who had crouched down beside her as well and he said,” This means that it has not been here for that long.”

“And I also spotted something else here,” said the cop as he directed the spotlight in a different direction and Bill went and walked towards it.

“This is a Browning .32. It has got a suppressor in it. This is a really nice piece,” said Bill as he pulled it up and dropped it in the evidence bag.

“There is a severed hand here and also a gun with a suppressor. So who would guess that this would go together?” asked Susan as she chewed her bottom lip. She still could not shake the feeling that they should not be here wasting time and there was something bigger waiting for them.

“None of the tourists who came here tonight on the Chinatown Ghost tour had a gun, did they?” asked Bill as he tried to figure out what possibility there might be.

“But why would a man use such a small weapon in the first place? I mean, a Browning is essentially considered to be a woman’s weapon and that means that there was a female here. Some way or the other this is not adding up and I am not really feeling it. Did you find the rest of the body?” asked Susan as she looked at the cop who had been guarding the hand.

“No Ma’am. I have not left the spot. And I figured that a severed hand would mean that it was more than enough to call you guys to check this out. Did not want to contaminate anything at all before you guys had made your investigation,” said the cop and Susan slightly nodded at him.

“Alright, let’s go and find rest of the body,” said Susan as she started walking towards the direction of the closest door that she could find and found that there was  black heap lying on the curb.

“Palmer!!!” she shouted and Bill was immediately at her side. They both looked down and Bill dropped down and turned the body and saw that the man was dead. And he had been dead for quite a few hours.

“He is dead. Neck has been snapped. Caught unawares,” said Bill as he checked the pulse on the neck and found that it was lolling.

“There is a dead body which has been lying here from God knows when and you are still not aware about this? You did not know that there was another man lying dead here?” shouted Susan at the cop who had been making quite the fun of the entire severed hand scenario until now.

“No Ma’am….I thought…I just thought that it was a drunkard passed out here and I was at attention standing here so I did not…” said the cop but Susan was so furious that’s he did not even bother to hear his complete explanation.

“THIS IS THE SCENE OF AN ACTIVE CRIME SCENE WITH YOU ALL KNOWING THAT THERE IS A SEVERED HAND IN HERE AND STILL YOU DID NOT BOTHER TO CHECK THE PERIMETER? WHAT ELSE ARE WE GOING TO FIND HERE? GANGLAND MURDERS?” shouted Susan as she did not even know how right she was in saying that. Bill knew that Susan had a furious streak of temper and almost everyone in the department was aware of that and even worse she could not tolerate negligence and that was exactly what had happened here.

“I am not going to listen to your shit any longer. I am going to talk to boss about getting you on punishment for a week. Come on Bill, let’s see what more has happened inside,” said Susan as she stepped on the curb.

“But Rollo!! This place has been locked for I don’t know what two decades…there should be nothing inside,” said Bill and Susan scoffed at him.

“There is a hand there lying on the street which has been cut off and there is another dead body lying on the curb with his neck snapped and you are telling me that this place has been locked down for two decades and no one has used it. No one might have used it the way we know it. But who knows what you are going to find in there?” asked Susan as she kicked the door and with her raised gun went inside and immediately she slipped on a puddle.

“Bill!!! Gimme the flash light,” said Susan as she regained her balance.

Immediately a light was thrust in her hands and there was a muttered curse as Bill himself slipped over something as well. The light shown that they were standing on a dark pool of blood which had been collected over the corner in a puddle.

“Holy fucking shit Rollo!! Is this a massacre?” asked Bill as they could see corpses strewn everywhere.

They went in further and Susan sucked in a breath and said,” Yeah certainly looks like it.”

“Could the perpetrator still be here?” asked Bill in a whisper as Susan said,” I don’t think so. This certainly does look like a gangland killing and there are all Italian or Spanish mafia. And as far as this neighborhood goes, who knows that this might be something of a war between a Chinese gang and the other Mafia gang. Because only the Chinese use the katana or the sword to slice it off and I can see that body parts are strewn everywhere.”

They hit the light switch at the entry way of the larger room in which they were standing and suddenly Susan recalled that she had been here in this place before.

“Holy freaking shit Rollo!!” said Bill as he could not believe his eyes to what he was saying. If this had been a locked sight for the massacre that had happened here before earlier then how on earth did it again become at active crime scene?

There were corpses lying pools of blood in every single inch and at least there were ten to twelve dead men lying here.

“I never thought that I was going to say this but I am feeling sick,” said Bill as he took in the scene before him.

“Giddy up. We are homicide detectives. If anyone comes to hear that we are feeling queasy at the sight of a little blood then it will not take a lot of time to become the joke of the department,” muttered Susan as she looked at Bill who was looking absolutely green.

“Why don’t we go and check the other places that are supposed to be empty but are not going to be?” Asked Susan and she moved away from the room filled with blood. The blood had not dried up and had slightly congealed with meant that this had not happened more than a couple of hours earlier.

“I think we should call in re-inforcements. We both are not going to be enough to handle this entire thing alone,” said Bill and Susan nodded.

Susan did not say anything else and then watched where she stepped and she cursed herself for contaminating the scene with the steps of her boots but in a case like this and when she was the first person to even possibly identify the crime scene it was inevitable. She waited to hear any kind of sound but there was none. There was a flight of stairs to take to the terrace and Susan slowly started walking in the direction of the terrace.

She could help but feel an empty feeling in the pit of her stomach.

As soon as she opened the door of the terrace she could not open the door and it was stuck with something.

“Bill once you are done come up here. I need some help,” said Susan as she suddenly missed Hugh to have her back. When they worked they did not have to say things like this to each other and Hugh himself took the initiative, not like Bill who had to be pushed and instructed at every single step.

And she did not bother waiting for Bill anymore and put the gun back in the holster and then pushed with all her might.

But despite all her attempts Susan could not open the roof. And neither could Bill. So they decided that there was something wrong with the door.

“But there is only one severed hand and a gun which is found in the back alley. The rest of the body has got to be here somewhere,” muttered Susan as she called up Hugh. She really needed another pair of eyes on this at the moment. This was a huge dealing and she did not want to botch it up under any circumstances.

“We really need to check the roof,” said Bill as he looked up.

Susan turned her gaze around and then she found an escape ladder that snaked up the four storey building facing the alley. The bottom rung of the ladder was rusted which meant that it was not used and they could not pull it down despite much tugging. That meant that they had to reach it up in the conventional way, through a stairwell.

“Man I cannot seem to catch a break tonight,” said Susan as she put back her phone back in her pocket.

They left the back alley and then returned to the main street from where they could access the front of the buildings. Businesses occupied the first levels, a Chinese restaurant, bakery, a grocery store--- all closed at that hour. And above the businesses were the apartments. Peering up Susan saw that the upper floors were all dark.

“We are going to have to wake someone in order to let us inside,” said Bill as he glanced in the same direction as her.

Susan approached a group of Chinese men who were standing on the side walk gathered to watch the excitement unfold.” Do you know any of the tenants in the building?” she asked. ”We need to get inside.”

They stared at her blankly.

“This building,” she stared again this time pointing and trying it with actions,” We need to go upstairs.”

“You know Rollo, talking louder, really does not help,” said Bill as he hid a smile hoping that it did not catch her eye and then said in a serious voice,” I don’t think that they do understand English.”

“It is going to take too long to wait for him,” said Bill as he looked at Susan and she nodded. She climbed up to the front entrance and scanned the tenant names and then pressed one button at random. Despite the repeated buzzes, no one answered. She tried a button, and this time a voice finally answered.

The voice crackled over the intercom.

“Wei?” a woman said.

“It is the police. Can you let us in the building please?” asked Susan hoping that she did not sound rude or obnoxious.

“Wei?” asked the voice again.

“Please open the door,” said Susan this time louder.

Then a child’s voice spoke,” My grandma wants to know who you are.”

“Detective Susan Rollo, Scotland Yard,” said Susan as she finally sagged in relief that there was someone who knew English.” We need to go up to the roof. Can you let us in the building?”

At last the lock buzzed open.

Nathan pressed the numbers for Commander’s private line at the Yard and he was breathing out a sigh of relief when he realized that Commander himself had received the call. Jane was seated beside him while the call was happening in the car and she had heard every single word uttered by the man and she could tell that the older man was anything but livid.“Bloody hell Frost!!! What are you even saying?” he yelled at the phone and Nathan had to hold the phone at a distance.“Yes Commander! I am telling you the truth. There was no guard on the corpse, it was lying there while he was conducting a huddle. He desperately is in the need of attention towards himself in such manner that he is even ready to compromise the investigation for that,” said Nathan and Jane showed him a thumbs up. Even though she was itching to get back to the morgue and conduct the dissection on the corps

Lancelot bit his lip just a little as he watched the man in front, perfection in denim. He let his eyes rise to his shoulders, broad and inviting, his type. But this wasn't a day for distractions no matter how gorgeous. Pippa would already be waiting for him at the old Inn. The man was too perfect. His smile was soft with a hint of femininity, his strong bone structure was all male. Lancelot let his eyes linger for just a fraction longer than was customary, his usual "test." Sure enough the man gazed back, unguarded and calm. This was a small town where almost everyone knew every one. And even though Lancelot did not like the fact that he did not have any anonymity at all it did not probably hurt him that there was a considerable amount of prestige related with his name which he bore. Even though it did not bring him any pride at all.“Maria, please bring me my usual. I am in a really sour mood t

A young woman came in their direction and said,” I am Constable Velds. You can call me Carla.”Nathan’s reverie was broken at her voice and Jane smiled at the young woman. It seemed that she was a misfit in this particular station. Carla extracted a bunch of keys from inside the pocket. It was not dangling on her belt from where it could be snatched immediately. That was a very sensible thing to do and the young woman seemed a real gem, Nathan noticed that carefully and then he sent Jane a signal. When they were out of earshot of the Mustard covered Sergeant, Jane spoke to Constable Velds smiling at her.“I may need to interview you about the conditions here. Where is a good place to start that if I want to meet you and Mr. Frost wants me to do that? I think he would decide that he would like me to do that,” said Jane. She liked this girl on her first impression and that h

“I don’t understand why the Head of the History Department, at Cambridge said that he had to meet us in person and he could not tell this over call,” said Palmer when Susan looked at him and said,” he said that this was important and this was something vital which had the power to change the course of a few cases. And so he wanted to say this in person. He also said that he doubted that the phone was being tapped.”Bill made a motion of thinking and then he said,’ That man who found that serrated knife, the one who is working on the other case with you, some weird last name!!”“Yes! Nathan Frost. What about him?” asked Susan as she slid behind the wheels of her car.“He is the protégé of this man. Then why not say to him and talk to you?” asked Bill.“Good question but

Two years agoLancelot’s POVWhen I was in college I had made a few friends but one amongst them stuck out prolificly. His name was Sebastian Casey. We seemed to get along well, we laughed, made witty remarks, enjoyed some good films, and at times we went into deeper subjects of conversation. We hadn't known each other for long, but we sure did have a lot in common. It seemed like him and I would be good friends for a long time. However, there was something different about it, some kind of feeling. When we were together we had a sort of tension between each other, you could call it a sense of awkwardness. It became more and more apparent as we became closer to each other. When I was with him I didn't feel like he was one of my usual stupid buddies, he was special to me, we listened to each, we made each other smile, it was one of the, " I felt like I could tell

I've never seen a room with so much furniture and so many hues I'd never choose, nor a room I love so much. I've dedicated my purchases to clean lines, simple and mostly white; but these walls are all burnt orange and reds. The furniture is rustic and dark, sprinkled liberally with vibrant cushions. There is a table in easy reach of every seat and the walls are more photographs than paint. Every one is of a happy memory, a smiling child, a birthday, a new baby. There is lively Columbian music in the background and the scent of cilantro in the air. I want to sink into the couch and never move. It isn't just a house, it's a home; she's made it that way.“You really think that we needed to stop here before we started our tour to Bradburtshire?” asked Nathan as he called out to Jane who was in the bedroom closet packing her bags.“It is not only me who needs clothes and other stuff, Natha

Nathan’s Flashback POV‘What on earth have I done?’ I said under my breath as I walked out through the pub’s exit. I had a fixed expression of disbelief embedded on my face all the way up the hill to the train station. I shook my head in the street to coincide with my thoughts—I dare not think now what passers-by made of my lunacy. I felt dirty, ashamed, uncomfortable, drunk, and penitent about what had just taken place in the men’s toilet back at the Ewe’s Head.I kept asking myself whilst waiting for the train: Should I have done it? Will I be able to face him again? Did anyone guess what we’d done? The answer that kept reoccurring was: I don’t know. Oh it was such a muddle. The blasted train finally arrived twelve minutes late—but no surprises there. I sat down opposite some boy and let my head fall against the grimy windo

Nathan and Susan drive on to the direction of Bradburtshire, with glimpses of rolling green slopes when the gaps in the tall hedges gave them a view. They came to a point where the road descended into a village. Susan was the one who was driving for the second half after they had switched places. She drove slowly now, staring ahead.“Funny sort of place,” she commented,” I don’t happen to see any gorge about which this place has been so talked about.” Nathan who had been dozing until now and dreaming about his romantic interludes quickly woke up and rubbed his eyes with the back of his hands and looked around.“Are you sure that we got the right place?” asked Nathan as he looked around again.“Yes, the map says that we are here. No mistake,” replied Susan. The village was indeed strange. On either si

Nathan’s POVI will always remember the barn. How could I ever forget it? It was a big, corrugated iron one, dull with age and with no windows on the lower level and just one at each end, up in the gable. Tall narrow windows that let light into the loft, while below the barn was dark and silent, cluttered and filled with dust. But I didn't know that when I first saw it. I came upon it slowly as I emerged onto the top of the mountain, after a steep climb from the bay below, which had taken me through the untouched forest of the National Park. And I came at it from the rear, seeing the high window lit with the full afternoon sun, and I saw him there caught in the sun, naked and golden, like some lost angel. Perched up there on the windowsill with his arms spread wide hanging on to the frame. He is the reason I remember the barn so well. I stopped there, breathing hard, recovering from the climb, and

This is getting to be familiar territory, Susan thought as they entered the corridor and turned to go towards the library. They knocked politely, turned the handle and then gradually descended down the steps. In his smoking jacket Lord Billington sat there crouched over a table occupied by the game of chess in progress. He frowned.“My dear chap. Welcome…. And also to you, Susan. The frown was about me being puzzled by the state of the game. Join me for a few moves, eh, Frost?” asked the earl.He waited for Nathan patiently as he toured the board from all angles. Sitting opposite to Billington, he moved one of his pawns. Billington looked perplexed. While waiting Nathan picked up the imposing Queen. He used a clean handkerchief to wipe off the wwaist a tiny mark. Then he placed her back on the board.“She is a heavy lady,”

After more valuable conversation with Acheson, Nathan left the table and headed with Susan for the garage. Once inside the car he stared straight ahead and then just sat there without even saying a thing without moving.“Billions and billions, MacArthur said that the moor is worth and Neville Guise offers Lord Billington only one million for this entire property like this. He must have been furious when Acheson sent him that phoney report through that courier--- and returned the huge fee that Guise had sent him, rather paid him…”“Which is why he tried to kill Acheson that day in the moor. That night I mean,” said Susan as her eyes widened with the realization,” He spotted the fake. We will now drive over to Bradburt Manor and I would like to have a conversation with Lord Billington on an immediate basis.”“But he will be asleep

The dining room was very quiet. Few tables were occupied. Acheson was at a table inside a secluded alcove. He waved. As Nathan and Susan sat on either side of him he took out a package nicely wrapped with a bow and all out of the pocket of his tropical drill jacket, and handed it to Susan.“I have never been able to properly thank you for saving my life up on the moor.. Otherwise I would not be here tonight. Just a small gift,” said Acheson with a smile and gratitude shining in his eyes.Susan took it gingerly. It had been quite long that she had been presented with gifts from men. And now that she had it she was not sure any longer. She opened the gold wrapping paper which was gauzy and then the green soft coloured paper underneath and took out an expensive leather case.Taking a deep breath she unfastened the case and gasped.Inside was a

“This map,” Marley started speaking,” I have obtained from a mariner friend high up in his service. They know of the island’s existence but do not know that the island belongs to that bastard, Neville Guise. Here goes….”From the cardboard roll he extracted a large map, spreading it to flatten it. Susan immediately recognized it as showing the west coast of Brittany, the Channel Islands with vast stretch of the Atlantic with another island well west to the Channel Islands group. The island was circled in red.Near the bottom of the large sheet was another map, a detailed outline of the map of Roab. A drawing on this map showed steep cliffs and a section of dotted lines shaped like a triangle with the narrowed apex ending at the gulch. Marley pointed the dotted lines projecting into the Atlantic.“That’s a trap,” he explaine

The pleasant maid had cleared away the breakfast clutter that the three of them had made altogether, but Susan was still puzzled by Nathan’s reply. Another factor entered her mind, she looked across the bed where Nathan’s note pad was still open and Nathan was studying it.“Island of Roab. Could that be somewhere important? I mean, somewhere remote out in the Atlantic?”“All great minds think alike,” he smiled,” I was just wondering about that myself.”“And there is a strange item in the paper. Something about the Asiatic pirates who grabbed an oil tanker about a few months back, fully laden. Do you think that this could be connected with that?” asked Jane who was also trying to contribute in the best way that she could, given that she had missed out on a lot of the investigation in the past few days.

The stranger strolled casually into the parking lot. It was dark and, despite the fact that it was Saturday and there were several bars around, the parking lot was not busy at 10:45. She would be getting out of the library soon and he wanted to be ready for her. He slipped a small screwdriver from his pocket and knelt by her license plate. He quickly removed the one screw, catching her spare key as it fell to the ground. He replaced the screw and let himself into her car. In the back seat he took a few other things out of his pocket; a small cloth, folded thick, a tiny bottle, a gag and some lengths of rope. He grinned. She was going to be surprised. He settled himself to wait. Another 10 minutes and her work would be done. He must've dozed because the pinging of her remote starter startled him and he almost sat upright. He slouched down further as the locks popped up. "Lazy bitch," he thought. "What's so hard about turning the

Susan looked at his expression of listening to every word she said had returned. She concluded finally the story with her walking away from the cottage with the crooked chimney and she had already earlier told about Jane’s rescue.“I am sorry,” said Susan,” I should have never take the risk without…”But Nathan was fuming and he could not help any longer. He finally burst out.“Wrong!!” he exploded. “ You were right and I have been a fool from the very beginning not hearing what you had to say. Have I not told you earlier that any of my members of the team that they must use their initiative? Which you have done and I must say that you have done successfully and admirably. And I am glad that you did not wait for the team and brought Jane back yourself. Otherwise we would have been missing a very crucial piece of information

“I think we ought to have a full breakfast up here,” said Nathan as he picked up the phone and said,” I am ordering it.” His voice was firm.“Won’t the landlord think that it is funny that I am in your suite so early?” she ventured.“Mr. Barnie has been running this place long enough, I am sure. So in his time it is an honest thing that he must have seen or he will be quite used to serving breakfasts to men who have spent night with a lady friend.. Par for the course.”Over the phone he ordered for a huge breakfast for three people, to be served in twenty minutes. Tea, more coffee, a carafe of creamer, since Jane took hers with cream and sweet, toasts, marmalade, scrambled eggs, crispy bacon, toasted muffin…“We will both be in a fighting fit after that,” he said refilling Susan&rs
