Two years later
Walking out of my Law and Business class I am gasping for a decent coffee. So, I go toward my car to one of the area's best coffee shops. Well, that’s my personal opinion, their pumpkin spice latte is to die for, and that’s the drink I am craving for right now. The fall season in Boston, Massachusetts is more breathtaking in person than what you see in pictures, in magazines, or on social media without those stupid filters. It’s the end of October and the leaves are this gorgeous red, brown, orange, and yellow color you could ever see in pictures, and I am here witnessing them falling from the trees around me.
It was roughly a ten-minute drive to this coffee shop, as it was just off campus and parking could be horrendous. Fingers crossed with the time of day it is it shouldn’t be too bad. Pulling up outside The Crowes Nest, I see there is an empty parking spot directly outside of it and I think today must be my lucky day. Now parked and the engine cut off I sit there for a minute or so just staring at the red brick building looking at the deep red awning over the windows, the red sign with the gold lettering of the coffee shop on it, and the hand-drawn window art in the windows thinking how thing have changed for me in the last two years since my breakup with the bike bastard as I now call him.
Not reflecting on the past, I need to look toward the future. I feel like I have been sitting in this car just staring at the coffee shop for too long it’s time I go into The Crowes Nest to grab one of my favorite drinks. A pumpkin spiced latte. I may be a Cali girl by heart, but I do prefer the simpler things in life from time to time. I am not ashamed to say that this coffee shop does this latte better than they do back home.
Climbing out of the car I head on inside to see no lines and see the two owners behind the counter. Wren and Robin Crowe are sisters, but not just sisters ironically, they are twin sisters. Identical twins too. I find it funny how I can go most of my life never meeting another set of twins to come to Boston, Massachusetts to find identical twins. Seeing how close Wren and Robin are with each other makes me miss my twin brother Chase. Reminding me to give him a call this weekend as he said there is something he wants to talk to me about. I have a small suspicion but I gotta wait to talk to him to see if I’m right or not.
As I get to the counter the two auburn hairs behind it turn around and two identical hazel-colored eyes greet me. “Hey Jen,” Wren says as she approaches the till. “Are you after your usual?” Robin asks I say yes please in response just as she heads over to the coffee machine to start making my order. I pay for my coffee as Robin finishes making it and hands it to me and she asks as she hands me a flyer, “Are you planning on coming to our spooktacular party here on Halloween this weekend?”
“Oh, please say you’ll come,” Wren pipes up after grabbing something from under the counter.
Looking at the flyer and seeing how this could be a good time to get out of my apartment and have fun once in a while since this is my last year here at Harvard. This could also be the best time to see if Chase and Savannah would like to come out for a visit that weekend too. It would be great to see them, it feels like it has been forever since I’ve seen my best friend and the other half of my being. It would be nice to finally introduce my twin to my twin friends too.
“Absolutely, I’ll be there. You wouldn’t keep me away even if you tried,” The three of us laugh and I take a sip of my coffee then I ask them a question. “Would it be okay if I invite my twin brother and his girlfriend to the party too if I can get them to come to Boston for the weekend?”
They both look at me in shock and talk in unison, “You’re a twin?” I now see what Chase means now how creepy talking in unison can be. “Why didn’t you tell us?” Wren asked then Robin asked, “Who is the older one? Oh, we have so many questions to ask you.”
“I didn’t tell you because I didn’t know you were twins until I saw you both together and I have never met another set of twins in my life. Chase, my twin brother is the older twin but by a minute and a half we are what you call New Year babies, he was born on the stroke of midnight, and I was born shortly after,” I tell them. Taking another sip of my coffee, I ask them “Have you guys never met any other twins too?” They look at each other then they shake their heads. “I’ll get him on the phone right now,” I dig out my phone and pull up the number I am looking for. Pressing the call button, I put it on speaker so the girls could hear the conversation, Chase answers after three rings.
“Hey, Jen, I was just about to call you,” he says down the phone to me.
“Hey, to you too bro. Listen, Chase, I have you on speakerphone right now and I want you to say hi to my friends Wren and Robin. But listen to this, they are twins too and they’ve never met another set of twins either.”
“Jen, did you know that twins happen quite often, but not as often as a single birth? It’s peculiar we haven’t encountered any other twins, but I’m glad you’ve made new friends who are twins. Remind me, what were their names?” Typical of my brother, he doesn’t say hi just goes straight into business mode.
“Hi, Chase I’m Wren.”
“And I’m Robin,” They both say down the phone to my brother.
“Hello, ladies, don’t believe anything Jen has told you I am the better twin,” The three of us laugh at his comment. “Anyway, Jen there was a reason why I was just about to call you when you called me.”
“Oh yeah, I totally forgot there was a reason why you were gonna call me what’s up?” I ask him as it is unusual for Chase to want to talk to me for some other reason unless it’s about my best friend who so happens to be his girlfriend, Savannah.
“Where are you right now?” That’s strange of him to ask me where I am. I’ve lived the same routine every day since I first moved to Boston.
“Umm ...” I look at the twins confused as this is very unlike him. “I’m at The Crowes Nest, as I always am at this time every day. Why do you ask? Is everything okay?” Waiting for his response the bell chimes above the door signaling the girls have a customer and I can’t take up too much of their time with this phone call.
“Jen, turn around,” The phone line goes dead, and I do as my brother says. Putting my phone into my pocket I turn around and there standing in the doorway is a man wearing an unbuttoned tan overcoat, a maroon sweater, dark jeans, and black boots with a huge smile on his face was none other than my twin brother. Chase.
“Oh, my god,” I run toward him and leap into his arms. Chase catches me and spins me around before putting me down. “I can’t believe it. What are you doing here?” I ask him looking around him to see where my best friend is. “Where’s Sav? Didn’t she come with you? Don’t get me wrong, I have missed you, but you two are inseparable. Where one is the other is not far behind.”
Giving me one more embrace he holds me against him because it has felt like forever and a lifetime since it was just the two of us together. “I missed you too sis,” Chase kisses the top of my head. “Savannah and I wanted to surprise you so we came to visit you for the weekend. But Savannah will be arriving in an hour or so. She wanted to call in to Wake Forrest first before coming here.” As Chase explains everything to me, I feel so happy just to be back with my brother and then my best friend later.
“I don’t care how long or short your visit is. I’m just so happy to see you,” I hug Chase one more time before we walk up to the counter where I introduce him to the Crowe twins, and he orders himself a cappuccino.
The coffee shop started to get busy, so Chase and I grab our drinks, went to sit at a table, and had a catch-up until we heard from Sav saying she was here. The one thing I love about having twin time with my brother is that “he who shall not be named” was not mentioned, but we do talk about how our classes are going and Chase tells me he plans on proposing to Sav after they graduate and move back to California. I could not be any more happier for them and I offered to help Chase plan and organize the proposal.
Sav messaged Chase saying she was half an hour away, so we still had time to talk about rings. Chase had a beautiful idea of getting a two-carat emerald cut aquamarine diamond with one-carat round cut diamonds on either side stetted on a silver band for the engagement ring. I thought that the ring idea is perfect. It's the same shade of blue her winter formal dress and prom dress was. As he has called her a small handful of times his Cinderella. I hope she says yes. Well, not hope I know she will say yes. The love my brother and my best friend have for each other is a one-of-a-kind, kind of love.
Not long after we stopped talking about Chase’s proposal as a just in case Sav turned up, she waltzes right on into the coffee shop. I stood up from my chair as she approached our table, and we hug like we haven’t seen each other in years. It feels so good to have family here in Boston. It’s not until Sav goes to grab her coffee and Chase steps outside to take a call did I realize exactly how lonely I have been the last couple of years. To have them here even if it’s just for the weekend means so much more to me than seeing Greg Davenport flaunting his happiness weekly on ESPN.
I hate myself for bringing in the only guy I have ever loved after he broke my heart for the second time. I don’t think I would ever forgive him or take him back for all the hurt he has caused me. I need to prove to myself and him that no matter what he does with his life or who he fucks, I don’t need him. I am better off on my own even if I feel lonely. I will become the best business lawyer I could ever be and one day work alongside my twin brother when he takes over the family business when our father finally decides to retire. I just hope when he takes over that we are equal partners to take our family business to new heights. That is how determined I am to not let Greg affect me after breaking my heart for the very last time.
We stayed at the coffee shop for another hour. During that time, I introduced Sav to the Crowe twins and she formed a friendship with my new friends. The five of us talked about the Halloween party and we offered to come early to help the girls set up for the party. Once we left the coffee shop, I took Chase and Sav shopping, so we had enough food to last us the weekend. Because knowing the calorie count, I suspect my brother to be on to stay in shape because of football I will need all the food I can get to keep him satisfied. That night we ordered a Chinese as we were too tired from grocery shopping to cook. You can call it being lazy all you like. I wouldn’t argue with you on this occasion. Yes, tonight, and tonight only the three of us are being lazy. Once the food was delivered Sav and I took the couch whilst Chase sat on the floor. I feel a little guilty that I don’t have anywhere else for him to sit but he said he prefers to sit on the floor nowadays. Savannah has trained my b
Garrett texted me later that day asking me about the party. Was it a costume party or not? Questions like that. I replied to him saying it was a costume party, and I asked him if he wanted to go in a couple's costume. He replied instantly saying he would love to do a couple's costume, and we were throwing ideas at each other, and we couldn’t agree on a costume. He suggested to meet up and go costume shopping later today after his shift and I agreed. I asked Sav what her and Chase are going as and as I suspected they are going as Cinderella and Prince Charming. I mean seriously could they be any more predictable? At least I can say no princess costumes to Garrett. Later that day I pulled up outside the costume shop Garrett suggested to see him leaning against the wall looking at his phone. There’s just something sexy but vaguely familiar about how Garrett is leaning against the wall. But I can’t yet put my finger on it. Putting my car in park I grab my purse and climb out of the car.
It’s Halloween and the day of the Halloween party. I asked the twins if they would like some help setting up for the party yesterday when I called in for my coffee. They were happy to accept my help with setup and I even threw in Chase and Sav to help us too. Sav was more than happy to help unlike Chase he grunted and showed his displeasure in doing something helpful for someone other than family while he’s on what he calls vacation. The three of us arrived at The Crowes Nest four hours before the party is supposed to start. When we arrived, the girls were already attempting to hang up some bunting and cobwebs. Chase being the big, tall giant he is helped them with hanging the rest of the bunting and webs whilst Sav and I done the tables, DJ booth, drinking counter, and the windows. Before we knew it the place looked close enough to be a haunted house, the twins said this is the best the place has looked for Halloween. Sav and I are pleased with ourselves. We still go it with decorat
GregEven though it’s weeks before Halloween and one of the big races of the season, there is no rest for the wicked. I am back out on my privately hired track out here in Chicago practicing with a couple of team members having what we call a friendly race between teammates getting ready for our next big race next weekend. I am not called Lord of the Dirt Track for no reason. I live and breathe for this, and I show it all in my commitment and dedication. We had been told by our riding coach to take it easy and not overpower the bike but to save that for race day. During practice, we have built-in mics and speakers so we can communicate between our riding coach and the other riders. There is me and three other guys Jameson, Randy, and Will we had just finished a walk round of the track and was heading towards our bikes on our stands. Once we got our bikes and helmets, we started to walk taking our bikes to the starting gate when Jameson starts a conversation I was not prepared to hear.
JenGarrett and I arrive at the party which looks to be in full swing. The DJ is playing ‘Dead Man’s Party’ by Oingo Boingo as we walked through the door seeing a crowd of people dancing away to this old 80’s classic. Garrett takes hold of my hand and lean into say something into my ear, “Care to dance with me?” He asks I nod my head as he guides me onto the makeshift dance floor. Garrett certainly knows how to dance, so that’s good and a positive as Greg could dance but nothing like how Garrett is spinning me around. The more I get to know Garrett the more things don’t seem to add up but feels right at the same time if that makes any sense. For a Harvard Law student, it does and doesn’t make sense to me. It just confuses me more. It feels like I am not seeing the full picture and that is something I need to find out before things go any further. But right now, I am going to enjoy my night at this party with some sexy company. As Garrett and I get closer when ‘Espresso’ by Sabrina Car
“WHAT?” I whisper shout down the phone to my brother already looking for all my clothes and getting dressed. I look over to the bed to see Garrett still sound asleep. I can’t just ditch and dive like this I better leave him a note. “Just as I said Jen, Greg has been in a serious accident. His mom called Mom and told her, who then told Dad, who then called me, and we’ve all been trying to get in touch with you. I’m on my way to your phone’s last location to pick you up so move that ass of yours and meet me outside,” With those last parting words Chase hangs up the phone just as I finish getting ready, I look at Garrett one final time and see he is still asleep. I check to make sure I have everything of mine and I leave his room once I am certain I have everything. Walking into Garrett’s living space for the first time, I see it looks like a typical Batchelor pad. Beer bottles on the kitchen island, sports magazines on the coffee table, and takeout menus scattered around the place. I l
Three exhausting, long hours later I finally land in Chicago. Leaving the airport, I can see why they call this place The Windy City. The winds blowing around us has my hair blowing in every direction across my face. Once I have tied my hair back with a spare band that Sav had in her purse, I send Garrett a text saying that I arrived in Chicago safely and that I miss him. Chase hails a cab, and we head directly to the hospital. Each turn of the wheel tightens the knot in my stomach, the uncertainty of Greg's condition gnawing at my thoughts. Sav tries to lighten the mood with small talk, but I just can't clear my mind. I never expected that after Greg dumped me, we would meet each other in such an unexpected way. What will I say to him? Does he hurt badly? Will the accident influence his ongoing riding career? And what will he say when he sees me? Too many questions flutter around my head it’s starting to give me a headache. I think I just need to see Greg and see what kind of conditio
After getting off the phone with my parents they have decided to make the trip out here to Chicago to give not just us some support but to be there for Greg’s parents too. I’m relieved to hear they are coming out here and to hear that they are on the next commercial flight out too is a huge relief. I’m looking forward to seeing them it has been too long since I last saw my folks. Giving Greg’s parents more time with their son I decide to go and grab a bite to eat and explore the city a little. As I walk through the bustling city, I wonder about the local restaurants to see what I would like a bite to eat. Finding this quaint Mexican restaurant has made me starved. Deciding this is the place to stop and grab something to eat I walk inside and grab a table for one. The vibrant energy of Chicago Mexicano makes me feel like I am not in a strange city alone despite the reason as to why I am here. GregWhat the fuck has happened in the last two years? Why would I be stupid enough to break up with the girl I know is the one who I am meant to be with? I just wish someone would give me straight answers. I asked everyone to leave a little after I got Andrea kicked out and to never come back. But I asked Chase to stay behind because I wanted to talk to him alone. I asked him questions about Jen and he told me that she has achieved everything she has aimed and still aims for. I am so proud of her, and I am so happy for all of her accomplishments. I must be stupid if I thought that Andrea is better for me than Jen. My Jen. She is the only one I know I will be happy being with for the rest of my life. I ask him for one favor and that is to get Jen to come back and talk to me. I need to talk to her like I need my next breath. Chase left me alone to my thoughts shortly after he promised me, he will try to get Jen to come back to the hospital. Taking into consideration what Sav said I do as she advised. Since landing in Chicago, it has been all about Greg, now it’s time I make time for myself. I don’t know when or if I will visit this city again, I want to see all the city landmarks, movie locations, and museums. Making a plan on where I head off to first, I enjoy the scenery around me. This is the first time since coming into the park I see its natural beauty and how the fall colors look incredible. Deciding to use this time to call Garrett to arrange plans for this weekend when I get a chance to see him again. I see that Cloud Gate is a short cab drive away and I decide that will be my first destination. I hail down a cab outside the park and give the driver my destination and then the driver pulls out into the street in the direction of where I plan to go. I dial Garrett's number whilst I’m in the cab just wanting someone to talk to. As the phone rings, my mind races through the whirlwind of emotions that have unfolded
