The meeting started at exactly ten in the morning. As Ashriel's spoke man, Nathan called the Head of the Families, Nobles, and Lady Kitori and Lady Octavia as the representatives of the Elders. Still, as expected, Amber did not attend and sent the twins as the representative. Every High Member is present except for Oriana and Leon
“I suppose everyone is here. Shall we start?” Every ear focused on Nathan attentively. Ashriel silently sat on her golden chair, wearing her face mask, black contact lenses, and black wig, for no one can see her face until she reaches legal age.
“I believe that everyone present in this hall is aware of the fallen Atherton family.” He started. “After the Great Revolt of the Quislings, three members of the said family survived, and two of them are here with us.” Nathan shot a quick look at the twins who listens silently.
“I want everyone to know that Oriana Atherton, the third child who survived, is now a former member of the Second Rank Nobles and is now an official High Member of the First Rank Nobles.” The gasp echoed through the whole meeting hall. The twins looked at each other, flabbergasted. Some opposed the idea, and some accepted it.
“First Rank Nobles? But Atherton has fallen.”
"The Ruler decided this herself. We must respect her decision."
“Fallen families have no right to be in with the Nobles under The Ruler.”
"Atherton contributed a lot for the growth of the Empire in the first place. They deserve a second chance.
"A family that brings no glory to the Empire deserves no position under the Ruler.
Different chatters and opinions filled the whole hall like swarm of bees, irritating Ashriel. Unable to bear the chaos, Ashriel motioned her hand that silenced everyone.
“Deciding without my permission?” Everyone tilted their head to the person who entered the meeting hall. A woman with jet-black hair and emerald green eyes. Everyone was alarmed. Nathan froze. Ashriel’s breathing became heavy, Olive prepared her gun, and the twins stood up and bowed to her.
“I do not need your permission, Amber.” Nathan’s voice was crisp, his gaze is sharp. Tension flooded the whole room.
“Oh, I see. Overusing of power and authority, eh?” She smirked. Hearing her remarks, Ashriel stood up.
Wearing a sarcastic smirk behind her mask, she spoke, “Overusing of power and authority?” She laughed full of sarcasm. Everyone felt their hair standing as the hall turned chilly. It was the first time they heard Ashriel laugh like madwoman.
“Being a selfish leader who does everything for your own pleasure. Does not care if your men died on a mission and torture them when they fail.” Amber’s smile turned into grim. “Tell me, Amber. Who among all of us overuse her power and authority?” She stepped forward, closing their distance. Amber gulped in nervousness. She completely knew she crossed the line. “Abusing and torturing your noble members does not make you a great leader. In fact, that is worthy of punishment.”
“W-well, there must be a justification before I allow my member to leave.” Amber tried to control her voice not to sound shaky.
“The Ruler’s words are justification enough, Amber. Who do you think I am?”
Lady Kitori and Octavia stood behind Ashriel. The Second Rank High Members did not move. The twins secretly prepared their weapons though they knew they have no chance. Suddenly, heavier tension filled the hall. Ashriel looked at Amber straight in the eyes. Her green orbs shakes with Ashriel's piercing gaze. “Due to certain circumstances, Oriana Atherton is being placed under my care. If you have any problem with that, I’ll hear you out at Eurus Hall.” Amber was taken aback. No one dared to open their mouths. All are fully aware of the things that would happen if they stepped into Eurus Hall.
“I still don’t understand why the former Ruler commanded me not to dispose of you. A back traitor who is not fit to be a leader, even of the lowest group.” Her words strike Amber like flashes of lightning. She hated that. She does not want to hear that from her mouth. Amber was about to open her mouth when Ashriel stopped her.
“Who do you think you are, Amber? What leverage do you have to talk to me like that without my permission?” Ashriel looked down at her. Her ice-cold, lifeless eyes gave Amber a shiver. A gaze that judges her. A gaze that condemns her. A gaze that slapped her the truth. The truth is that Ashriel will always be the Leader. Her Leader. She is born to serve her.

When the meeting was over, Ashriel left for her secret place, a peaceful, isolated place in the countryside far from the city. She wanted to unwind, away from the crowd. Reaching the place, she sat at the cave rock at the top of the mountain, facing the ocean.
"Ashriel, my granddaughter, look! The ocean looks pretty in this spot." Meredith carried Ashriel dearly on her chest.
"Woah!" Her mouth opened wide in amazement. "Granny! The water is dancing with the wind! Look! Even the birds are dancing!" Ashriel pointed her tiny finger at the ocean. Her voice was so cute like a tiny mouse squeaking. Meredith chuckled because of her cuteness. "Carsillion, look!" Nathan, who was as small as Ashriel, gave all his effort to stand on his toes to see the beautiful scenery Ashriel was talking about. Meredith laughed playfully seeing the little child battle with the grasses taller than him.
"Ahhh!" Nathan felt his body leave the ground, making him squirmed. "Y-your Highness, it's okay. Please put me down." He tried to pull himself back on the ground but Meredith's arm was stronger. On her right hand was little Ashiel, and on her left hand was little Nathan.
"Nathan, my dear boy. It's okay. Treat me as your grandmother." Nathan was about to oppose but Meredith opened her mouth. "That's an order." Meredith giggled to see Nathan's eyes widened while he slowly nodded his head. She was not sure if it is due to disbelief. Well, she completely knew how obedient Nathan is. Even at such a very young age.
"You little kid. How come you are that obedient given that you're only six years old." Nathan's cheeks turned red with her words. For a young boy like him, those words were a very big compliment.
"Carsillion, look! Look!" Ashriel took his hand and shook it playfully. "It's amazing!" Nathan looked in the direction Ashriel was pointing, and his eyes sparkled. The color of the sea from their spot was more clearer than on the shore.
"You know what's more amazing?" Meredith asked. "The ocean is very deep. And the more you go deeper, the more you will discover new things. That's how amazing God is." Ashriel tilted her head with Meredith's words.
"God?" She asked curiously. Nathan only listened attentively. Meredith nod her head.
"Ashriel, Nathan, my dear children, God gave us a piece of Himself. Everything that you can see in this world is God's mind." She kissed their cheeks playfully. "I am excited to see you explore, discover, and experience new, good things in the future..." "You know what's more amazing?" Meredith asked. "The ocean is very deep. And the more you go deeper, the more you will discover new things." She kissed their cheeks playfully. "I am excited to see you explore, discover, and experience new, good things in the future..."
Ashriel felt something warm roll down her cheeks. She did not realize that she was crying by the time she looked at the ocean, in the same spot where the three of them stood ages ago. Suddenly, her phone rang. Only then did she come back to her senses.
“Where are you?” His voice was full of concern.
“You know.” She answered with a low voice, still reminiscing every memory she has in this place.
“I do. I’m with you the whole time.” Ashriel's eyebrow frowned. Befuddled, she searched the whole place. She then saw Nathan standing a few blocks from her spot. “I did not notice you.”
“That is why I asked, ‘where are you?’” Nathan chuckled sadly. He walked towards her and sat by her side, still worried. There was a moment of silence. Both are sitting still, observing how the wind controls the wave, listening to the songs of the birds, and feeling the cool kiss of the breeze. The grass that was once taller than them was now ashamed of how tall they had become.
“How are you?” Nathan broke the silence, so Ashriel looked at him. She knows that Nathan does not want a simple answer. He knew her.
“Carsillion… What can you say about her?” Nathan shifted his gaze from the ocean to her mesmerizing orbs. The orbs that make emeralds and oceans ashamed.
“She changes a lot.” Nathan looked away. Doubting he asked her, “You are looking for Chaster, right?” Ashriel’s heart stopped for a moment. That name mixed her emotions.
Amber was Nathan’s ex-fiancé and the only daughter of Ashriel’s adopted uncle, which she considered her sister. Chaster was the son of the Ruler of Sephtis and Ashriel’s ex-fiancé as well. Both are loyal to her. But the incident five years ago changed everything.
“Ash, after all these years, do you still love him?” Ashriel looked at him with a perplexed face.
Love. Did she ever feel that for Chaster?
“What’s with the question? How about you? Do you still love her?” Her question was out of the blue. Both of them knew the answers to their questions. But no one dared to admit.
“Don’t answer my question with another question, Ash. What if I don’t?” Nathan smiled, trying to convince her.
“Don’t fool me, Carsillion. I know you still love her." She stood up and wiped off the dust from her jeans. Nathan did the same. Ashriel then flashed her beautiful smile and tousled his hair. "Come now, my stomach groans.”
Her rapid breathing sounded as her body trembled. Her eyes glued at the woman in her late sixties with chains wrapped around her frail body. The chains dig deeper into the flesh with every move. Her terror mounted with every breathing. "Zillian, my dear nephew. Observe as your beloved grandmother enjoys the pain she deserves." "Granny!" Ashriel shouted in terror when Edom slapped Meredith with his gun. Blood flowed out of her nose. She reached her arms and tried to run towards her, but two men pulled her down and stomped her stomach. Shallow spikes from their winter combat pierced through her stomach. Her sharp shackles dug deeper into her skin, making her howl like a wounded animal as blood spurted. Edom laughed eerily.
“Pardon me. I can’t hear you, boss. I’ll send the information later.” Olive grinned her teeth listening to the dog named Raith, and the cat named Kate grumbles at the kitchen counter. “I said, let me do it!” Kate shouted angrily as she reached for the knife, tiptoeing her feet. “No! I’ll do it!” Raith lifts up the kitchen knife and the meat, making Kate jump from time to time. The chefs and kitchen staff standstill with sweat forming on their foreheads as they silently watched the scene. Kate was about to argue when a loud bang silenced them. Olive was irritated. “What if I’ll cut the heads of both of you? Will that knock you off?” She retorted, trying to control her tone and her temper, but the chefs and staff flinched. &nb
“No. It will be dangerous for Oriana to secretly investigate that syndicate group.” Kate objected. A letter of help came and so, all High Members were present at the Meeting Hall. “Please, I want to be of assistance to everyone. I’m familiar with the Sei Language, and we once tried to investigate that group. So, among all of us here, I am the one compatible for this mission.” Oriana pleaded, kneeling on the floor. “I’m against it. What would we do if the worst thing will happen?” Biting her lips, Olive opposed her. Her eyes were filled with anxiousness. “Do you have any proposal you would like to suggest?” Nathan asked. “We could
“You bastard! Come out!” One man shouted. Kate felt her heart beats faster. She did not bring her gun with her. “I said come out!” She heard their footsteps getting nearer. She scanned her jacket and pockets. Good thing she has her knife. But what can a knife do against a gun? She quickly shifted her position but lost her balance when a strong hand pulled her down. She swayed her hand to stab the person with her knife, but the man quickly grasps her hand, slicing the palm of the man’s hand. Kate’s eyes widened upon seeing the man on top of her. “R-Rai-“ “Shhh Close your eyes.” Raith shushed her and pin her hands on her side. Kate frowned. This is not the right time to joke around. “What are you-mph.” Kate gawked when Raith pressed their lips together. It was not gen
“They run a huge illegal business of Arm trafficking. I heard that they trade contraband arms and ammunition to different places. I also confirmed that they kidnap children and sold them.” Oriana reported. It was past eleven in the evening. But the team gathered at the Meeting Hall with Lady Kitori, unravelling the main root of this case, fully awake. “Frank Edison. That’s the name of their boss.” She continued. Olive frowned upon hearing the name. Leon and John turned their heads towards her, bewildered. “That confirmed it.” Kate blurted out of nowhere. Their eyes shifted from Oriana to Kate who’s sitting still, crossed arms. “What do you mean, Lady Kate?” Oriana asked. “Remember when I followed the three men who left your table?” Oriana paused for a moment, remembering what happened, then nod in confirmation. “I followed them and overheard their conversation with someone from the phone. I heard Sir Frank’s voice, yet I thought I was just imagining t
“Brother-“ “Don’t you ever… call me ‘Brother’ again.” Chaster froze with Nathan’s words. He had thought hundreds of times that this will happen and yet, he was hurt and astonished by his response. How much more will it hurt him when he hears her response? “How awful. Is that how you greet your old friend?” He forced a smile as he clutched his fist, fighting back his tears. “What kind of friend leave in times of need?” Nathan’s word struck him. It hurts, but it is the truth. “I’m sorry. But you don’t understand.” “Then make me understand!” He exclaimed. He then clenched his jaw and breathed deeply. “I told you to take care of her, yet you hurt her.” He calmed himself, holding back his first from throwing to Chaster’s face. Chater bit his lower lips. “Do you think it is easy for me? For the past five years I blamed myself. If only I knew my father and Amber’s father’s plan, then I had warned you. But I was too late, Nathan. I tried
The whole trip was filled with silence. After some hour of traveling with the helicopter, they passed the third gate of the Aparctias Kingdom, then they used a limo to pass the border. They are now outside. Ashriel felt uneasy about this trip not only because of her encounter with Chaster for the first time in five years. But because they are out of her territory. “Be on guard. I don’t feel –“ she heard a strange sound when the limo stopped. “What happened?” “I think the tire stepped into something,” Natsuki said. “It’s not. I heard a gunshot.” Ashriel said as she prepared her gun. Everyone was alarmed. “I think I knew who’s behind this.” “Do we have some spare tires?” Natsuki nodded. Then there was another gunshot. “Fix the tires, brother. Let Xieaniel assist you. We will cover you and clear the way. Am I clear?” Everyone agreed and prepared their guns. They all peeked into the window. At the count of three, they came out of the
The whole ride was once again filled with silence. After they crossed the border, two helicopters arrived to fetch them. Everyone is asleep except for Nathan and Ashriel. Her eyes were tired, asking to get some rest as well. But her mind refused to. Who would have dared to attack them in broad daylight? Nathan studied her face. Her eyes are looking outside the window, but her mind is flying somewhere else. Her arms crossed against her chest as she sat straight. Her face was drawn with exhaustion. She signed deeply, then sighed again. Her head was about to fall, but Nathan caught her and gently placed her head on his lap. “Sleep for a while. We still have two hours to travel.” Nathan gently stroked her hair, and without any objection, she curled up on her side and closed her tired eyes. Nathan leaned closer to kiss her forehead when he suddenly remembered Chaster. What will happen now that he’s back? After a few hours of travel, they reach the first border of th
Leon took Oriana to the Noble’s Cemetery where Aparctias nobles were buried and her eyes widened upon seeing her mother and father’s name carved to two of the gravestones. So that’s why she couldn’t find her parent’s corpses in the Atherton grave because they were buried in the Noble’s Cemetery. “Mom… Dad…” Oriana whispered, holding back her tears. “I missed you… so much.” Leon knelt in front of them and placed two bouquets of white lilies. He smiled and put another bouquet to his father’s grave beside them. “Dad, look. She’s my beautiful girlfriend and the future mistress of House Norton.” He said proudly, making Oriana flushed. She quickly wiped her tears away and Leon then looked at the Athertons. “I’m sorry for putting your precious daughter in harm's way.” He said and brushed their names with his palm. “C-Colonel, you don’t have to apologize. It’s my job after all.” She stuttered. “I’m not talking to you.” “Sorry.” Leon cleared his throat. “But I just want to thank you
They won and the Quislings were completely eradicated. Ashriel stood in front of every soldier who fought and behind her were the fallen. “Behind me were the people who lost their time. In front of me are the people who still have time.” She started. “Throughout the whole war I learned a lot. One of those is to value every moment you have with the person you love.” She glanced at Valor and Emmette who were smiling proudly. “And to follow your dreams. But following your dreams requires sacrifices.” “From now on, the whole Two Great Empires will have new rules and systems. People will have a new life. New chances. Everyone who died gave their lives for all of us to live. Therefore let us fulfill that and starting today, let us value life.” It was a mass burial and the whole Austere was showered with white flowers. Even the graves of the fallen were filled with white roses and lilies, and varieties of white flowers. After the mass burial, the first Rank Nobles and the Elders liv
Ashriel glanced at the small child sleeping comfortably under the baby’s incubator. He was so small and so lovely and so… fragile. She clenched Amber’s locket and another tear escaped her eyes. She just lost her twin. She held her tummy while looking at Jasper. “I promise… all of you will live comfortably and safely. I promise…” She whispered and bit her lower lip. She sighed deeply. On the other hand, Donovan found Oriana in the airbase, giving orders to her troops. His eyes dimmed.“Attack the base.” With his cue, hundreds of his men attacked the air base. Oriana was alarmed with the sudden attack.“How the hell did they entered?!” She grinned her teeth and took her gun. She turned back and was about to command her men to attack when she felt something warm covered her. She completely knew who it was. “Don’t worry about that fool and focus on your part.” Leon whispered, tightening his hug to her shoulders. Oriana flushed but then shook her head. It’s not the right time and place
Everyone gathered as Ashriel gave her words. “I might have no chance of telling this soon therefore I want all of you to know how thankful I am, as your Leader, with everything you contributed. It’s my honor to lead all of you.” Her eyes looked at the countless armies filling the whole Austere. She smiled. “Let’s win this battle.” “Long live the Ruler!” “Long live the Ruler!” “May light be upon Theupholis and La Elora family!” The armies roared and cheered, strengthening each other. Ashriel turned to her Cadre behind her and smiled. “Let’s see each other again.” They nodded and with one final hug, everyone departed to their positions. But before Nathan left, Ashriel grabbed his hand and kissed him dearly to which Nathan quickly responded. They broke the kiss and Nathan kissed her forehead. “Promise me you’ll come back alive.” Ashriel whispered and Nathan pecked her lips. “I will. Let’s see each other after this.” Ashriel nodded and they went on their way. After armi
The dripping blood from Xieaniel’s back keeps on repeating in her mind. Olive was still lost in her thoughts when she felt something cold touched her shoulder making her jump from her seat. “S-Sorry, Lady. I didn’t mean to frighten you.” Said Oriana who drew her hand back. Olive sighed and held her head before shaking it. “No, I’m not frightened at all.” She reasoned out. “And stop addressing me ‘Lady’ since we’re sisters.” Oriana stopped for a moment before letting out a faint chuckle. “Yeah. Sisters.” They stopped and Olive pulled Oriana behind her when the door opened, revealing the three bastards. Olive never lowered her guard ever since she worked with them since a snake will always be a snake. “You didn’t kill her but that’s okay since I knew we would sooner or later.” Edom greeted and pushed the things from Olive’s table, shattering some glasses to pieces. Olive rolled her eyes. Oriana observed Edom carefully. She heard a lot of rumors and stories about him but she ne
Elias woke up with the sound of his phone beside him. He quickly picked it up and saw one of his men's names. He stood up and glanced at Siel who was still lying on her bed. It was four in the morning. “What?” “Sir, you’re brother planning on ambushing and killing nobles.” Elias’s eyes widened. “WHAT?!” Siel flinched and her body quickly stood up without any delay. She just came back from Ashriel’s wedding and was tired from all the swaps she made with Ashriel. “I think you must call Siel back, Sir. Or else she’ll be in danger.” Elias eyebrows frown. “What? What do you mean?” “I saw her entering Austere a moment ago, Sir. But since I couldn’t enter the city, I was not able to warn her.” Elias froze for a moment and glanced at Siel who was alarmed. “Are you sure?” “A hundred percent, Sir.” “Very well. I’ll fetch her myself then.” Elias ended the call and before Siel could ever move, Elias pointed his gun at her. “Who are you?” He asked with his crisp voice. Siel tossed h
“YOUR HIGHNESS!” “BOSS!” Everyone exclaimed and tears flooded the whole Meeting Hall aside from the La Elora family. As soon as the wedding ceremony and celebration ended, The First Rank Nobles gathered in the Meeting Hall. It was 3 a.m. in the morning yet sleepiness had no inch to them at all. “Boss, I-I thought you’re already-” Leon stopped when Ashriel embraced him and Oriana, patting their backs. She looked at her remaining Cadre and with her cue, everyone ran to embrace her. “Y-Your Highness, please, don’t ever do that again. EVER.” Kate pleaded followed by Raith and the rest. “It’s part of Granny’s plan.” “But why?” “For everyone’s growth, sometimes the Leader must disappear.” “I don’t like that word.” Tory blurted out. “You knew everything, Bud?” Nathan asked Natsuki while the others coped up with Ashriel. Natsuki laughed. “Only yesterday, Bud. All of us were bemused you know.” “Now I understand why Gil and Bri like her so much. She was their aunt after all.” V
It’s been two months since Siel showed up and since then, they were all staying at Thrascias Empire. Olive was in total turmoil and the whole First Rank suddenly hyped and motivated since they now have a clear path to take and actions to make. No more walking in darkness and critical investigations. “Tell us about Seiron.” Venice commanded and Siel nodded. “It was totally different compared to the past. Its glory all faded.”“I see. The last time I went there was almost a decade ago.” Siel gave Xieaniel a flash drive which he quickly scanned and presented. The Hall dimmed and they all focused on the huge screen.“Taking pictures there was quite hard.” Siel mumbled and glanced at Olive who was grinding her teeth. The Elders who used to go there also have faces no one can paint. “This was the place they now called, “The Small Village of Fear.” Siel said and hearing the name, Kate’s face soured. “It was the only way through the main city and going to the base. This village is proof
Her body felt warmer and the coldness from the bathtub she experienced finally felt unknown, as if nothing happened. But she knew something happened. Something unexpected. She opened her eyes with the sound of the door that slid open and footsteps getting closer to her. She saw a man’s broad shoulder and firm back. It was Leon. Suddenly, Luis’ words suddenly crept into her mind. “And our parents died… Because of his father.”Oriana’s heart suddenly ached. Her beloved parents died and she hasn't even seen their bodies since the Great Bloodshed, their house fell, their reputation was destroyed and she was treated like a pest. Everything was because of two persons; Ashriel and Leon’s father. Anger started to cover her heart.“You’re awake? Thank God!” Her creased brow ironed when her eyes met Leon’s worried eyes. He quickly dashed towards her and cupped her hand and face.“Are you alright? Feeling any hurt? Are you hungry? What do you need? Tell me, please.” He bombarded her, full of
