CHAPTER 7

I had no idea where I was headed but North seemed like the right place to go, so North I went.

Far away from the Southlands of the raging Flame Pack where I would never have to lay sight of the people who had caused me pain again.

Why was I fleeing? I wondered that, I should be seeking revenge, trying to find out the truth behind my Father's death but I did nothing of the sort, not because I had no desire to but because I knew exactly what lay behind it.

I could not possibly walk up to Alpha Blake and demand the truth from him right?

He would kill me and my Father's effort to preserve my life would have been in vain.

During the length of my journey, I rode in a horse-drawn carriage, the only mode of transportation available to the lower class in the advent of time when automobiles were starting to gain prominence.

It was available only to the upper echelons of society, one I once belonged to.

"Where's the largest Pack up North?" I leaned forward to ask the driver, a male Omega Sam had located to take me wherever I wanted to go.

I owed her a lot, not just for creating a chance for me to leave the Raging Flame Pack but also for the small pouch of coins in my pocket.

"We are approaching Twilight City, it's home to the largest wolf Pack," Mark replied.

He was an indigenous wolf of the raging flame Pack just like I was but hadn't shunned me when Sam approached him for help.

Many would wonder where he had gone since we had crept away in the dead of night but he had still agreed to.

According to him, he owed my Father one and this was the only way he could repay him.

"Twilight City," I mumbled, falling back in my seat.

I had heard of it, or more specifically the tales that were woven around the existence of its leader, 'the Grim Wolf'

He was possibly the strongest Alpha to exist and the most feared, his Pack was the most flourishing Pack as well, but that was all I knew about him.

Mark seemed to sense my worry because he turned to glance back at me, "This is the farthest I've travelled so I know little about this Pack but there shouldn't be anything to worry about. You aren't trespassing on rogue territory and I know a few wolves who moved to the Northern lands."

"Really?" I asked uncertainly.

"Of course, they didn't report anything bad so it should be fine."

"I'm still worried about leaving you alone though," He added, a hint of worry in his tone.

"I understand, you have to head back soon." This was already considered enough repayment, I could not possibly ask him to do more.

It would not be long before the others noticed he was missing and if they found out he had helped me, I could only imagine what they would do to him.

"I think the Twilight City will be your best bet, it's a large Pack so no one will pay you any attention."

"I hope so," I nodded in agreement, that was exactly what I wanted, to make myself barely noticeable and just live a quiet life.

We soon came upon a fork, where the path divided into two and Mark pulled the carriage to a stop, "This is the farthest I can go with you, the city is right ahead."

Quickly, I grabbed the small leather bag on the seat next to me that contained the necessities Sam had stuffed into it for me then slid down and adjusted my clothes.

"Thank you, Mark, I will never forget this," I mumbled gratefully.

"It's nothing, call on me anytime you need my help, I will do my best to assist you."

I exhaled then nodded in reply, strapping the bag on my shoulder.

Mark took his seat in front of the carriage again and grabbed the reins, ready to leave.

"Miss Maya," He called out and my feet stilled as I turned to face him.

"Don't let the hurtful words and actions from the past weigh on your mind. You have a new chance to craft a beautiful life for yourself, seize it."

His words were said solemnly and my throat clogged with tears that I pushed back.

"Thank you for your kindness," I sniffed while nodding then returned his encouraging smile with a smile of my own.

I watched him leave, dust kicking up in his wake.

With a loud sigh, I turned to continue the rest of my journey alone.

Just like Mark described, I came upon the Twilight Pack in about an hour, the sight of the city made me stop, transfixed to a spot in awe as I silently took it all in.

The cobbled streets echoed with the noisy chatter of people and different aromas wafted together in the air.

It was a large city, completely different from my Pack with huge stone walls, wrought iron balconies and a bustling marketplace.

Slowly, I made my way forward, sifting through the clamour and commerce to locate a place I could stay for the night.

"This is perfect," I mumbled with my gaze roaming around the numerous Pack wolves of different age ranges and genders who didn't seem to even notice my presence.

In a narrow alley that snaked between two looming buildings, I finally found a boarding room.

'Peace abode,' The white-washed sign at the entrance read.

"Let's hope I find peace here," I let out a dry chuckle and then made my way in.

The doorbell rang with a loud chime when I walked in, a chubby female with mousy brown hair sat behind the counter and she glanced up when I walked in.

With a scrutinising gaze, she assessed me, possibly judging my appearance and then her eyes widened, "What are you doing here?"

What did she mean what was I doing here?
