At 5 p.m. in the evening, the atmosphere became more still like a void planet, then a thunderstorm struck twice with a red flashlight that will definitely meet you irrespective of where you are, and a strange wind filled up the entire community. Everyone was scared and terrified; children were found clamped in their mother's breast, mates were holding each other tightly, the trees were not left out, and animals were running for their lives. There were blood spills at every boundary of a given territory, and this allowed it to cross into a new clan to devour them.
The alphas are shifting; they howl and groan to protect the community; the moon goddess is prayed to send the full moon; and the clan, packs, and territory need more wolves to fight for them.
It is the beast—the masked monster—who has been terrorizing the entire wolf community in the last five years. It comes on the 12th, 17th, and 25th of every month. It kills and devours every wolf, werewolf, and animal it beholds.
He is seen as the demon of hell; he is the mysterious harbinger of death.
While I held my baby very tight to my chest, I tugged the curtain a little closer to see if I could see anything. Everyone seemed so terrified, but I wasn't that scared; I was rather curious to at least behold its face. This is the first time in my life that I am seeing the sight of the monster's visit. In the past, my dad would have us all locked up in the inner room while he went out with the rest of the rogue soldiers, the Gammas, in search of this unknown monster. It is said that despite their search, they haven't traced its route or even exactly how it looks. The last thing I heard about it is that the great old sorcerer of the moon star pack is the only one with a picture of what the monster looks like. My father once said the sorcerer's price is for him to make peace with their alpha; only then can the wolf communities be peaceful again.
How can that even happen when Alpha Leo is my dad's greatest rival—not just my dad, but our entire pack?
Alpha Leo is the youngest alpha of his time, a great and powerful wolf. He used to be my father's ally. He uses his position to suppress his pack, and when it became too much for the pack members, they came to my father to help them speak to him. Their relationship took a flip to the south when he refused to stop hurting his pack, moreso when he started hunting down wolves from the shadow moonpacks who dared step foot in his territory.
Unfortunately, I am his son's mother, and he doesn't know yet.
He groaned while he asked me, "What are you looking at; you are not scared?"
Would you sit down before the monster see you and come for all of us?" one of the men who had come to visit his wife and newborn pup yelled at me.
Fear booms in my stomach. I don't have my wolf powers. How do I defend my son if the monster comes here? I quickly obeyed his command and did as instructed.
Bones started cracking like popcorn struggling for its life in a chef's hand. I looked behind me; it was the man that just spoke to me; his skin began to shrink away; he bent downwards; his light bluish eye turned red; there was the appearance of fangs; and hairs started to grow rapidly all over his body—not even a blink of an eye could one count its speed—his cute nose protruding out like the curve of a banana or even looked more like a parrot's mouth. His fangs kept enlarging, and a pointy, big antelope-like ear began to pop up from his head. He became a wild dog, and while hauling and groaning, he ran out through the window like a sharp noise.
Not just him alone; I was very surprised at how most people were shifting to go out to fight and protect us from this unknown beast.
Everyone in the ward was very calm; a lot of women fought the urge to shift just to be with their newborns.
Who is this beast? The monster that has turned the road into a pool of blood
About three hours later, I tugged the curtain a little closer, and the atmosphere became clearer; there were no strange sounds nor trees shaking. I was able to look through the main road, damn!
The roads were covered with blood, and there were a lot of naked people, all trying to hide publicly, but unfortunately, that's the price of shifting.
Troops of ambulances started entering the hospital as though it were an ambulance day meeting; unfortunately, it was the result of the monster's visit.
"Everybody clear the road; everybody clear the road." Those voices continued.
Adjacent to my ward is the accident and emergency department. All the nurses and doctors I could see now had a red dress in contrast to their usual white dresses; their hands were all soaked in blood; the gloves they had on made no sense again; and they needed more health workers to come help them as many were still coming down from the woods. Some were still in their wolf form in the woods, while others were naked at every corner of the road.
It was indeed a memorable day of my life; it happened right before me—not my dad's story, but Elina's.
I jumped down from the window to go look at my little Leo; he was pretty cool, unaware of the historical event that had taken place. I grabbed him, kissed him, and even felt more need to protect him.
"My son, my son." A woman kept shouting.
"He is my son; save his life, doctor." "I lost his elder brother three weeks ago to this dreaded monster; he is all that I have got."
I became so emotional that tears began to drop from my cheeks to the ground. What about my parents—are they safe? Will they at least remember they have a daughter who could also be a victim of this beast?"
The tears became more intense as I remembered my family and what they did to me.
"Are the kids safe?" Is everyone alright?
The doctors asked, while going around the entire hospital, ensuring no one had collapsed from this horrific attack.
"Please, I know some of you were discharged earlier today. The hospital management had warned that no one leaves today." One of the junior doctors said.
At six o'clock in the evening, I went to the bathroom to freshen up. I usually love to be the first to shower. I didn't want anybody coming to shower with me, as there are few rooms here. I am still that shy little girl who loves her privacy.
I came out of the damn shower, and before walking down to my room, there is a fancy mirror built directly on the wall that, after showering, one can enjoy the fun of looking at one's face, which is very tempting to ignore. As always, I love to look at my face, and while I raised my head above my head, I noticed a moon-like shape on my palms. At first, it was very bright, but as I looked closer, it became blurry until I could barely see it.
"What could this be?"
It is 2:45 p.m. the next day, yet everyone is still soaked in the ambience of yesterday's terrible attack. Taking a whiff of fresh air while feeling uneasy with my reality, I held my baby in my palms while beholding his cute face. "When will all this be over, my son?" Is there any possibility of us living like every other wolf out there? As much as I hate to admit it, I miss them so much. I miss your grandparents; they are not bad people; after all, you sure would love them when you grow up. Swinging my two legs, I lifted up his cute, tender hands and kissed them; I can't wait but only wish he starts talking to me; my son is damn cute; yes, you heard me; his amber eyes leave mouth talking; everyone wishes to have an amber-eyed child; it is a rare color that only comes from a blood alpha's clan. "Have you seen my sister? Have you seen my sister? A voice said repeatedly: I had to ignore that voice; after all, I am alone here; not even my brother could come visit me, and even if he
Two weeks laterIt has been two weeks now since my son and I left the hospital. We live in the downhill city, which is not far from the hospital. This place is quiet and peaceful even though one could barely see a half wolf. The house is an uncompleted building that was used by wolf hunters in the past before the werewolf community sent them all away and marked their territory. The body of the house is made of crafty, beautiful bamboo sticks. Its roof is made of blue trampoline sheets. There are no windows yet, but I was able to find aluminum sheets, which, to me, look great. My little son Leo is growing so fast already; his presence in my life gives me hope; he is the essence of my existence. It is 12:15 p.m. As usual, everywhere is calm and peaceful, but there was a noise. While I laid my baby down in his cot, I peeked through my windows and saw a young man. I could only see his back, but from his back, you could at least make a guess at what he could look like. From his back view,
Ooops!!Somehow I managed to make it back to my little mansion. First, I placed the bucket of water down, then carefully brought my baby down from my back. I changed his butt; he was damn soaked from last night. I usually wake up at night to change napkins, but I had none. He was so relaxed and didn't even cry. I am sure he really needed the bath. I applied perfumed jelly cream to his soft skin so he would be nice and fresh for the day.I had to place him in his cot while I washed down with the remaining water. It was indeed refreshing; I missed the shower a lot, something I definitely took for granted. I miss living like before. When my pack kicked me out, I was very lucky to find a huge amount of money that I had saved from the past in one of my pants. I also used to work in an eatery as their receptionist, so I saved up enough money that I thought would have been enough for my baby and me for one year. That's pretty funny, right."I was able to stock up enough formula and napkins fo
Authors POVAt exactly 8 a.m. in the city of valley hillsAll had gathered at the central town hall, which was down in the north at a junction connecting the three different territories. The city of Valley Hall is populated by only werewolves and wolves; there are about four packs. The shadow moonpacks, the moon star packs, the wind winda packs, and the mysterious pack. All the Alphas, accompanied by their respective Omegas, from these territories have gathered to come up with a solution on how to trap and unmask this dreaded monster terrorizing the entire city."I welcome all of you that have gathered here today for us all to put our heads together in killing this dangerous monster in our city." Alpha Valeria says this while avoiding the gaze of Alpha Leo.Alpha Valeria is the father of Elina, the future Luna of shadow moonpack who was stripped of her powers because she fell pregnant with a man who was not her mate. He is the Alpha of the shadow moonpacks, and his pack is gifted with
A few hours later, I entered the room and lay down on the old mat I had found in the room the very first day I found this place, and I am not complaining because what would I have done if I hadn't been lucky enough to meet it here? While I continued looking in the direction of my baby, I couldn't help but to go kiss him; my baby is damn cute."O my God! Little Leo is running a temperature; what do I do? Is even too late to go to the hospital?" I continued to quiver in fear. One of my greatest fears is having him sick. I barely took care of myself, not to talk of another. Going back to that hospital is definitely going to remind me of my reality; the head nurse wouldn't stop raining insults on me, and they may not even show any concern. With my hands on my head, I kept moving to and fro from every corner of the room, imagining what would happen if he died on me. "Shut up, girl. It's just a fever." My wolf spoke up.I remembered that one of the male doctors taught me how to manage fever
While he continued to gaze at me fitfully without stopping to clatter his bunch of keys in his hand, I looked away while praying to the moon goddess that he doesn't remember a thing."You smell familiar; have we met before?"Even though I backed him, I am sure he must have felt the shock that took me out. I paused a while while waiting for him to say something again. I continuously tapped my baby's back like my life depended on it just to see if that question could be ignored.Hey, Miss, can you hear me?" He asked.I gulped a mouthful of air while my mouth gaped open. I kept thinking about them, wondering if he remembered them. One of my concerns is that I wouldn't want him to ask me which pack I was in, knowing that my father and his alpha are not on speaking terms with each other and that their issues have affected both territories. Also, the thought of getting to meet the man who has tossed me off several times is definitely not something I want."Sir, you know you can go now; I rea
A few minutes later, she started to ask me questions I literally would not want to entertain, but she has been nothing less than a kind mother to me, so I should be nice with my response."They tossed you for being unmarried; am I wrong?"I swallowed my saliva while looking down."She sounds like she knows stuff about me," I thought. Now more than ever, I felt so scared and uncomfortable around her."My name is Emily, and I am glad to meet you.""You are such a beautiful young girl; how did you end up being a rogue?"I felt so embarrassed and pathetic, and while she prefers those lines, I hate it when I am called that; it is not as if it was intentional; I was drunk."My name is Elina. Nice to meet you.""You don't have to feel bad; I am a rogue too. I fell pregnant with a man that wasn't my mate, not as if I did not know; I forced myself on him as his charming muscles were irresistible; he had a curly bob and light blue eyes. When I found out I was pregnant, I never told him because h
After a few minutes, the beta had left, leaving only me and my son in this lonely receptionist office. God alone knows where she went. "Oh, I'm really sorry!" I heard a voice. She walked past me and went to her seat. She is a bit tall, with fair skin and curly blonde hair. Gush! with a loud make-up on her face that made her look more like a confirmed witch. "Good evening, ma'am. I have been waiting here all day. My son and I are extremely famished and tired." She threw her witch eyes on my son; she was just so carried away that she could literally hear me. I was just speaking to myself. "Madam!!!! " I screamed Immediately, she looked at me like someone who had just woken up from a long sleep. She really scared me with her intense looks toward my baby. I tugged my baby so tightly to my chest. "Oh, my daughter, I am sorry; you have a cute son; he is so charming; he has a rare kind of eye color; definitely not from you." I wish this woman could just read my mind and understa
"Is she aware already?" One of the elders whispered in Alpha Lorenzo's ear. Unfortunately, I heard him. "What is he talking about? Am I aware of what?" I was perplexed.. "Please accept our apology. If you can forgive me and your father, then you can forgive all of us." My father pleaded. Mateo looked at me. And gave me a sign to accept their apologies. "I have forgiven you all." They started to come closer to me one after the other, hugging and shaking hands with me. A few minutes later, after the drinks and food were shared, Alpha Lorenzo stood up and came a little closer to where I was seated. "My daughter, you are blessed, and we are lucky to have you in our midst. We all thought you were dead. We have searched for you for more than 6 months now, and we couldn't find you. All thanks to the moon goddess for bringing you back to us." He smiled before looking at the elders. Everyone was waving at him; they all made faces that suggested a go ahead. I became more curious to learn th
"I am scared, Mateo. Do you think they will listen to me? Do you think my father will welcome me?""You have to calm down, my love. The moon goddess knows what she is doing. If you are the chosen one to save the wolf community, then no harm will come to you. The moon goddess will protect you and help you fulfill your destiny.""I am not sure I am ready for that. I am not sure I want to do that for the people who banished me. I am here because I want to seek answers to the mark on our palms. I am not sure I am willing to help them.""Also, now we are very close to my house. No one can find out your true identity. They might hurt you if they find out that you are the monster's son. "Please, on no account, should you disclose it to anyone." I warned him."Why is there no one on the street? Why is there so much silence? This is quite strange.""You worry too much, Elina! "Let us get to the pack house first." He exclaimed. We approached my compound. I peeked through the gate, and I couldn'
"We have to visit your community; we have to leave this place!" He exclaimed, nodding his head."Why did you change your mind? You have never supported me each time I mentioned anything like visiting my community. You have never failed to remind me how wicked they are and how Alpha Leo would kill me. Please tell me why you changed your mind." I asked curiously."My love, just a few minutes ago we saw the golden sign again on our hands. We need an explanation for that. We have to be brave and go to your father. He may have an explanation.""Not just the symbol on our palm, my love, I had a dream again. This time it was very clear, and I don't know how to say this to you."What is it? Please, you know there is nothing you can't tell me, right? I am very curious. "Please tell me." He pleaded while holding my hands.I took a deep breath before removing my hands from his. I folded my hands around my chest and turned my back on him. My heart began to beat fast, and my feet suddenly became c
"You are still here! Why are you stalking me?" Was I not clear when I told you to stay away from me?" I yelled at him while I looked away."I have been at the river.""What! "Don't tell me you spent the night at the river.""Yes, I spent the night at the river. I can't live on your side. Allow me to protect you from my mother. Give me this one more time to prove to you that I am nothing close to my mother.""Stop calling her your mother; use the right word: monster." "Your mother is a deadly monster." I snarled."You are correct. She is not and will never be my mother. In fact, I am not going back to that house. I will stay here with you until we figure out where else to go. Please don't turn your back on me. Believe me when I say I didn't know she was the monster.""Have you gone crazy? You and I know the implications. Your mother would never rest until you returned to her, and she would kill anyone that stood in her way. Please, you have to go back to her.""There is no way I am goi
"My Alphas, the worst has happened. Abomination! Abomination!" One of the guards shouted."What is the problem? What abomination are you talking about? One of the elders questioned him curiously."Where is Alpha Leo? We have been here for over two hours this morning, and he is still around. He is basically the only one yet to be present." Alpha Lorenzo snarled."Let the young man speak!" He requested."My Alpha, Alpha Leo, was found lifeless in his chambers, and as we speak, all the guards and domestic staff have all run away.""What do you mean he is lying lifeless?" I spoke with him two days ago. "What happened to him?"Everyone seated at the town hall began to murmur. Some were looking happy, as if they actually wanted something bad to fall on him. Some people who sat at the back all came forward to clearly hear what the guard had to say about Alpha Leo."Everyone shouldn't be. Please go back and let's hear what he has to say. There is no need to crowd him. "If we can keep quiet, n
"You have to stay away from me. Just so you know, I don't believe anything you say. You are the monster's son that the entire wolf kingdom has tirelessly searched for over the years. You are the son of the monster that took my only son away from me. How could I have not noticed that my boyfriend is the son of the beast that has killed and is still killing the werewolves?""Stay away from me, and don't come any closer to me!" I snarled, grabbing a long stick in my hand to hit him in case he tried to touch me."I am innocent; I am just as surprised as you are. I don't know how else to convince you that I have no idea who my mother was. How would I want to hurt you? You have known me for two years now. You saw how interested I was in helping you locate this beast that hurt your son. I never knew she was the masked monster the entire Wolf Kingdom is looking for." He knelt down and let out a loud cry."You have to leave now. I don't want to have anything to do with you anymore. I can't mar
"Where could she have gone to? I have searched thoroughly everywhere in the compound, but there is no trace of her, not even her scent." I pondered while sitting on the couch outside. "Now this is another opportunity for me to sneak out to go visit Elina. I am sure Mom is safe, and she probably must be at the clinic." A thought pushed through my mind as I had a fluttery, empty feeling in my stomach. I stood up and smiled. I feel a twinge of excitement roll over my belly. The thought of Elina completes me, and I am not leaving her, not even because of my mother or anyone else. I swiftly ran to my room and slipped on my shirt. I didn’t bother wearing perfume, as that would be wasting my time. ———————- "What is that sound? Is strange. Over the two years I have been in this forest, I haven’t heard such noise before. Could it be that the forest animals have finally decided to hunt me? No one would believe that not even an ant has bitten me ever since I lived here." I pondered while my e
Mateo's POV."What could be the meaning of what happened to us a few days ago? What could be the meaning of that symbol? I don't know much about tradition. I don't even believe in the moon goddess or the stories people tell about her. Yes, it is true she is the owner of my fate, but I don't just like to talk about her in the manner others do. I may have to tell my mother. She would be in the best position to explain what that could mean. Yes, I have to go!" I shook my head sideways and left my room for my mother's."What is the problem? You have been acting strangely and very calmly since yesterday. Is there anything bothering you?" She asked me with her face all laced in curiosity."Yes, something is bothering me." I responded in a wavering voice. I was still very scared of what the outcome of this would bring."Go ahead, son! Talk to your mom. What is bothering my son? "Come over here!" She dragged me to her bed, went to the fridge, and grabbed two bottles of chilled water. She was
Alpha Valeria's POV"It has been three months now; the entire community has been searching for my daughter, yet no one seems to know about her. The warriors of our land have made the forest their home. They are instructed to stay around the forest in case they see her. Does it mean that my daughter is dead?" Tears rolled down my cheeks."You have been here all day. One of the maids just told me that you didn't eat your lunch. What is troubling you, my Alpha?" She questioned me while patting my back.I harrumphed before I looked up."It's about Elina, our daughter. Do you think she might be dead? What if the monster has devoured my daughter? I will never forgive myself for letting stupid traditions blind me. I am left with this guilt that won't stop haunting me. I have to do something. I have to let our elders have second thoughts about this tradition.""I remember countless times how I begged you in the past not to banish your own daughter. What did you tell me? You said you had to re
