Vicky, clearly tired of our exchange, pulled on Nicolai’s arm. “We’re just friends.”

“Friends? Haha!” I doubted and laughed.

“You cheated on Amethyst. I caught you both!” I accused.

He leaned forward, his eyes flashing with the catch of laughter. "You're an idiot, Mr. Grayson," he muttered.

“What are you trying to say? Some knight in shining armor? You're just her ex-husband playing hero to save her from herself? The whole thing is pathetic.”

I knew that was true; it was a taste, a bitter one, to swallow. Yet I wrestled it back. I was not my mistakes. "I'm not here to save her," I said, taking strength in my voice. "I just caught you two.".

That made Nicolai laugh harshly and jolted my nerves again. "Caught? Just like how she caught you?" he said sarcastically. "You are the last person she should bother with. You have broken her trust not me.”

Vicky’s impatience was palpable, her annoyance radiating off her like heat. “This is ridiculous,” she said, pulling Nicolai’s arm again. “We sh

Amethyst POVI woke up to my phone ringing, Victoria's name flashing on the screen. My heart raced as I wondered what could be so urgent. I scrambled to get ready, taking a quick shower and mentally bracing myself for whatever awaited me at the office. When I arrived, the sight that greeted me was astonishing. My office was a riot of color—flowers spilling from every corner, vibrant blooms suffocating the air with their sweetness. I stood there, momentarily breathless.“What’s going on?” I asked Victoria, my confusion palpable. With a grin, she replied, “It’s a surprise from Nicolai Montero.”I rolled my eyes. “Of course it is. His obsession is getting out of hand.”Victoria chuckled, but I could see the sincerity in her eyes. “He wanted to show you how special you are, even while he's away. I helped arrange it.”Frustration bubbled inside me. “This is just another way for him to exert control. I want nothing to do with romantic entanglements. My grandmother’s revenge plans are enough

The moment just hung there between us, my order sinking into the air like thick fog. I watched Mrs. Sanchez flinch at my words, as if the title "Ms. Amadeus" had cut a gaping hole in the guise she had so long played at being. It was a jarring reminder of our new reality-one where I stood tall and she stooped over as a subordinate.“Ms. Amadeus,” she whispered again. It was a delight to hear the shift, that recognition of my power."Louder," I said, squinting a little. "I want to hear you say it plain."“Ms. Amadeus”, she repeated, her words a little stronger this time, though her voice still quivered with anxiety.I moved closer to her. She had to look at me. "You forget, you are not here to take up any mothering role. You are here to work and do it my way. I want you to obey me as a professional, not like some parent trying to get their child's love.”She nodded, swallowed hard, and I could see the fight in her. "I get it," she said, her voice stronger now.“Good,” I said, with a rus

GIDEON’S POVThe next morning I woke with a heaviness about my chest-one attached to me like an unwilling shadow. I hardly slept at all, as the raciness in my brain whirled ideas about Nicolai Montero and the apparent betrayal against my ex-wife, Amethyst. Of course, I knew I had no right to this feeling. I was the one who cheated on her, who betrayed her trust. And yet here I was, waking with restlessness and thoughts for her.I rolled over in bed, trying to wash away images of the past: laughter, warmth, and the way she once looked at me. Those were soon drowned out by the look of Nicolai's smirk as he taunted me when we crossed paths. I tried to tell myself to let it go. I was now married to Alexa, and my life with her needed to be focused, but nagging concerns about Amethyst would not let me.Against my better judgment, I dressed, wordlessly left the house to Alexa, and could feel my heart racing against every turn as I moved towards Amethyst's company.I was approaching that buil

Amethyst POVThen only the ringing phone distracted my deep concentration-provoking thought while I was browsing spreadsheets. Expecting this one also to be another boring one, I slowly picked it up. But then a face appeared on the caller ID, Mr. Gideon Grayson, my ex-husband."Ms. Amethyst Amadeus, receptionist over the phone replied, "Mr. Gideon Grayson is looking for you."A frown pulled up my eyebrows. "Busy," I curtly bit off, my heart racing in that tight mask. Without hearing an answer, I dropped the receiver, the feel of which was hot in my hand as though it had scorched it.Victoria sat across the room. Her eyes looked up from the computer screen. "What's wrong?" she asked, a genuine concern written on her face.I sighed as frustration boiled forth. "My fucking ex-husband, Gideon is looking for me. Not now do I have for this,” I snapped saying my words with more poison than I wanted to unleash. "He can seek my time if he had something important to say in his mouth.”A smile c

I went home, sent one of the maids out for chicken soup, and then sat quietly in my room. It was a warm smell around me, like being blanketed with a warm, encompassing blanket. So sharp was the contrast as my body began to freeze as well. That small little smell was some form of consolation as I endeavored to shake off the load of the day. After a quick shower, warm water enveloped me, and I hoped it would wash away some of the troubles that stuck to my mind. Even as I stood there, with steam swirling around me, my thoughts kept floating back to Gideon. His voice boomed in my head, yelling and squeaky, demanding my attention when I was unwilling to let him have it. It galled me that so much sway he had over my emotions even when he didn't know a thing about it. “It has nothing to do with him,” I said to myself, acrid resentment churning beneath the surface. A fever crept through my bones like a reprimand for letting his opinions mean a little-only to me.I slipped into the soft robe,

  • Kneel Before Me, Ex-husband   Chapter 49: His Concern

GIDEON’S POVI drove up, and before my eyes, a cloud of frustration churned close to the surface. It was supposed to be warm within my heart seeing home but today too heavy for me to carry; that feeling weighed me down further because I sat inside my vehicle, holding the wheel in stony silence with an eyeball glued onto the main door. The sun was in the west, low, casting long shadows in the yard; but nothing was in my mind except what I had seen.Taking a deep breath, I pushed myself out of the car. Everything that has happened seemed to repeat itself in the crunch of gravel as my heart heaved as I turned to the door. I reached over to unlock the door and slip inside; the familiar scent of lavender was little comfort to me.As I kicked off my shoes, the thud upon the hardwood echoed through the silence.“Alexa?" I called out; my voice sounded far emptier than I'd intended. She talked back from the kitchen, her voice cheerful enough that nearly anything but a smile became a little bit

I felt Alexa's fingers slowly slipping out of my hands as I spoke, and the emptiness I had felt earlier came back in full force. The silence between us was thick and stifling. The echoes of the past, of what we had done to Amethyst, were looming larger than ever, almost tangible. How could I ever convince Alexa that I was absolutely in love with her and our future when the entire foundation of our relationship rested on a lie that neither one of us ever really seemed to put to rest?Alexa blinked away, rubbed her eyes."You say I'm your present and future, but I'm starting to wonder if you really mean that, Gideon" she whispered, her voice laced with a tremor I'd rarely heard before."How can I move ahead when you are still living through the ordeal of Amethyst?""It's not like that, Alexa," I said, getting closer, desperate to fill the gap between us."I regret how things ended, the things we did. But I chose you. I chose our life together. I just. I hate seeing Amethyst like this, f

I sat upright, heart pounding, taking in the surroundings: messed living room, random bottles around and on the floor. Panic ended my sleep.“Alexa!” I screamed, vaulting to my feet. I ran toward the kitchen where I heard her voice. That is where I turned, and my stomach sank at what I saw:She lay on the counter pale and quivering with eyes wide open, and blood was trickling down her legs to make a pool on the floor.“Gideon,” she breathed, her voice a mere whisper, horror written across her face.“Stay steady!” I rushed to her side, my heart racing fast. “We need to take you to the hospital.”I'd scooped her up before she could do anything more than protest-her body went limp against me-thought and whispered, “I have you”. And now, moving on swift legs, I hauled out of the house into the cool slap of the evening air.I tied her into the passenger's seat. My shaking hand trembled as it tried closing over her seatbelt. "Hold on," I kept insisting as I quickly get into the driver's se

The wedding day began with a haze of tension and forced smiles. Amethyst's heart hammered in her chest as she sat in the limousine, the fabric of her wedding gown pooling around her. The air felt stifling despite the car's air conditioning, and every passing moment seemed to pull her further into Nicolai’s trap. Her phone buzzed. The screen flashed with a breaking news alert, the banner at the bottom reading:"LIVE: BOMB THREAT REPORTED AT AMADEUS ENTERPRISES BUILDING."Her breath caught in her throat. The screen displayed shaky footage of employees evacuating the building. Police cars were parked outside, their lights casting ominous flashes of red and blue. Amid the chaos, the camera zoomed in on a familiar figure entering the building: Gideon Grayson.Amethyst's pulse raced as fear clawed its way up her throat. Gideon was going into the building—a bomb-rigged building—and she was on her way to a farce of a wedding."No!" she whispered, clutching the phone tightly. Panic surged as s

  • Kneel Before Me, Ex-husband   Chapter 153: The bomb

Nicolai's words echoed in my mind like a constant drumbeat, each syllable reminding me of the precarious position I was in. The bomb, the ring, the wedding—everything felt like a twisted game he was playing with me, and I was caught in the middle. But beneath it all, a fire still burned in me, refusing to be extinguished. As Nicolai went on, detailing every intricate aspect of the wedding plans, I forced myself to focus. His voice became a hum in the background as my thoughts began to shift inward. I couldn't let him think he'd won. Not yet.He paused, waiting for me to respond to something he had said. I snapped back to reality. "I'm sorry, what?" I asked, feigning distraction. He frowned, his sharp gaze assessing me. "Are you even listening, Amethyst?" His tone was suddenly colder, suspicion creeping into his voice."Of course," I replied, offering a strained smile. "I just... I'm trying to imagine everything. It sounds perfect." The words felt like acid on my tongue, but I forced t

Nicolai’s smirk returned, but it was tinged with something cruel, something that made the air in the room feel heavier. He moved closer, his presence suffocating, until he stood mere inches from me. “You still think this is a negotiation, don’t you?” he said, his voice low and mocking. “That you have some kind of choice. But let me show you just how wrong you are.”Before I could react, he grabbed my wrist and yanked me toward the center of the room. I stumbled, barely catching myself as he dragged me to a small table I hadn’t noticed before. On it sat a sleek black device—unassuming at first glance, but the red light blinking steadily on its surface told me it was anything but ordinary. My blood ran cold.“What... what is that?” I asked, my voice faltering for the first time.Nicolai’s smile widened, predatory and triumphant. “This,” he said, gesturing to the device, “is the key to your compliance.”He pressed a button on the side, and a small screen lit up, displaying a digital map

The sharp sting in my wrist reverberated as I clutched it to my chest, glaring up at Nicolai. His smirk was infuriating, and his dark eyes gleamed with satisfaction. But I wasn't going to let him see my fear—not again."You’re wrong," I spat, my voice steady despite the tremor threatening to break through. "I’m not yours. Not anymore."He leaned in, so close I could feel his breath against my face. "You’ll realize soon enough, Amethyst. You belong to me. Always have. Always will." His tone was low, almost a whisper, but the venom in his words was unmistakable. The car jolted as it turned sharply, and I used the momentary imbalance to push against him with all my strength. Nicolai stumbled back slightly, his grip loosening just enough for me to lunge for the door handle. My heart raced as I yanked at it, desperate for an escape, but it didn’t budge. Child locks. Of course."You didn’t think I’d make it that easy, did you?" Nicolai taunted, his voice calm despite the chaos in the confi

The sharp pressure of Nicolai's hand around my waist was suffocating, as though his grip was the only thing holding me to the world. I felt the panic clawing at my chest, but I forced myself to breathe steadily. There had to be a way out. I couldn’t let him drag me back into his hell.As we stood there in the middle of my office, the sound of footsteps echoed faintly outside, but no one seemed to notice the tension thickening the air. Nicolai’s eyes locked onto mine with that same unsettling intensity, the familiar mixture of possessiveness and danger swirling in his gaze."You’re not going anywhere," he growled, his voice dangerously soft. "I’ve already taken care of the people outside. No one will know you’re missing. Not until I’m ready for them to."A cold shiver ran down my spine. How did he do this? How did he always manage to control every situation, every person around him? I could feel the anger and helplessness bubbling within me, but I needed to think. I couldn’t just let h

  • Kneel Before Me, Ex-husband   Chapter 149: Forced by him

I gripped the phone tighter, my pulse racing as Nicolai's words echoed in my ears. "You think you can walk away from me? From us? You think you can just erase everything we've been through? No, Amethyst, you're not done until I say you are."I took a deep breath, trying to steady myself. "I don't owe you anything anymore, Nicolai. You had your chance, and you lost me. This is over."There was a long silence on the other end of the line, and for a moment, I thought the call had ended. But then Nicolai's voice returned, low and dangerous."You don't get to decide that, Amethyst. You're mine. And I'll remind you just how much you're mine."The hairs on the back of my neck stood on end. I could feel the tension in the air, thick and suffocating, as though he was already close, watching, waiting. I wasn’t sure if it was just my imagination, but I could have sworn I heard the faintest rustle on the other side of the phone, like the sound of a door opening. Before I could respond, the call a

  • Kneel Before Me, Ex-husband   Chapter 148: Bothered heart

Days passed, each one slipping by in a blur of activity and emotions I couldn’t seem to shake. It was as though the weight of the past hung over me, suffocating at times, but the presence of Gideon beside me provided a semblance of stability.Yet even his reassuring presence couldn’t erase the constant unease gnawing at the edges of my thoughts. Nicolai’s shadow still loomed large in my life, and I knew that my decision to walk away from him hadn’t gone unnoticed. I spent those days trying to ignore the anxiety that tugged at my heart, trying to convince myself that everything was fine, that the past was behind me. But the reality of what I’d left behind was too real to ignore. Nicolai wasn’t the kind of man who let people walk away from him without consequences.I was standing on the balcony one evening, the cool breeze brushing my face, when Victoria—my ever-vigilant assistant and best friend—came to join me. Her face was etched with concern, and she didn’t need to ask to know what

  • Kneel Before Me, Ex-husband   Chapter 147: Worries

The following days felt like a delicate dance—one where I was constantly aware of the fragile balance between what I wanted to believe and the lingering doubts that gnawed at the edges of my thoughts. Each moment with Gideon felt like a small victory, but the weight of Nicolai’s threat still loomed over us, unspoken yet present in the quiet spaces between our words.Gideon’s presence grounded me, and I found myself leaning on him more than I thought I ever would. But beneath the comfort, I couldn’t shake the nagging fear that Nicolai was still out there, a shadow hanging over everything, threatening to destroy it all. Nicolai wasn’t a man who took kindly to betrayal or failure. The moment I’d left him, the moment I’d walked away, I knew he wouldn’t just let it go. I wasn’t sure how, but I knew that he would find a way to make me pay.On one particularly cold evening, as the sun dipped low and the sky bled into hues of purple and gold, I found myself once again on the balcony, wrapped

  • Kneel Before Me, Ex-husband   Chapter 146: Share of mistakes

The days that followed were a delicate balance of old habits and new emotions, a quiet dance between familiarity and the tentative trust that had begun to grow between us. Gideon’s presence was steady, unassuming, yet it grounded me in ways I hadn’t expected. It wasn’t just the words he’d spoken or the kiss we’d shared—it was the way he existed in my space without demanding anything more than what I could give.Still, my mind raced when I was alone, questions swirling in the silence of the night. Could I really let my guard down? Could I trust someone again, after everything that had happened? The answers weren’t clear, but I found myself drawn to him in ways that scared and soothed me all at once.On a brisk evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon and painted the sky in shades of amber and violet, I found myself on the balcony, wrapped in a blanket. The cool air nipped at my skin, but it was refreshing, a reminder that the world kept moving forward no matter how tangled my thoug
