I gripped the phone, the voice sending waves of anger and terror rippling through me. "What do you want?" I snapped, my voice steadier than I felt.

"Amy, we need to talk," she said, her tone laced with a familiarity that made my skin crawl. "I know you're mad, and I want to explain—"

"Explain what?" I interjected, my pulse rising. "How you and Dad just neglected me while I’m in prison? How you support Alexa and Gideon’s betrayal?

There was a thick silence, as if I could almost hear her scrambling for something to say. "You don't understand—"

"Understand what?" I bit back, feeling the sharp edge of my words with anger building inside of me.

"Amy, please. You're not thinking clearly. But you can't just shut me out like this. You need to hear my side."

"Your side?" I repeated incredulously. "What could you possibly say that would change anything? I'm busy right now and will tell you when I'm free."

"Amy, this is important—"

"Is it, though?" I interrupted. “I just can't deal with this now

Adrenaline ran through my veins as Atty. Johnson elaborated on the facts about my grandmother's estate. How could Eleanor have a stake worth fifty billion dollars in Grayson's firm? Fifty billion. All this heavy burden weighed upon me, but even more significant was the secret she carried with her."Why didn't she tell me?" I insisted in anger, my voice breaking. "Why keep this away from me?"I looked up at Atty. Johnson. His countenance softened, with a trace of regret. "Sometimes, people in her position prefer to keep certain investments private, especially when family dynamics are complicated. She might have thought it would protect you.""Or maybe she wanted me to discover when the time was right," I said, my chest aching with worry. The idea of Eleanor manipulating a dead man for a purpose from beyond the grave lit a small fire in my belly. "She knew Grayson was dangerous."Victoria entered the room just as Johnson opened his mouth to respond. "Is everything all right?"I nodded,

The morning light drenched through the curtain as I shifted slowly, my body heavy from what was left of last night's wine. Victoria and I had gone over every detail of the plan, though the wine had dulled my senses at the time. It sharpened my focus today, however. Today, I wasn't Amy Sanchez. Today I was Amethyst Amadeus. And today I took what was mine.I leapt out of bed and onto the cool floor, my feet on their way down even though my mind was racing ahead to what lay in store. The fifty-billion-dollar stake Eleanor had left me in Grayson Industries was my weapon—my means of control over Gideon's empire, the man who betrayed me and left me. Today, I would be taking my first step toward claiming that power. In the shower, I let the hot water cascade over me, washing away any lingering sleep. My thoughts were busy going around the meeting I had to hold with Gideon, the man who once thought I was nothing. He didn't know what I'd become. I wasn't that weak Amy he'd discarded. I was som

Drown out the soft hum of the elevator, because one slid open to reveal the top floor of Grayson Enterprises. The building reflected Gideon's design taste: sleek, efficient, untouchable, this cool modern design breathed a refreshing air. I took in a breath, filling my lungs, then stepped forward. My heels clicked sharply on the marble floor, but my stride was slow and measured. As I entered, the receptionist outside Gideon's door looked up and flickered with recognition; she immediately stood up almost a little too quick and awkwardly fumbled to declare my arrival. "Ms. Amadeus, Mr. Grayson is inside”Thanks, I said, maintaining a velvety smoothness in my voice. I threw her a great smile and proceeded to walk further, directly to Gideon's office.Every step was choreographed; this was for the audience watching me. I wasn't Amy Sanchez anymore; I was Amethyst Amadeus, here to handle her grandmother's investment and make an impression.T

Gideon's features put the irritability to flight, replaced by amusement, his dark eyes for sincerity in mine. "Beloved ex-husband? You really like flinging that around, don't you?"I shrugged, keeping my tone light. "It has a nice ring to it. But let's not bother with our history, Gideon. I'm here for the company. My grandmother believed in this place, and now I'm determined to prove her right.".He just sat there for a minute, staring at me, turning something over in his head. Then his phone rang up from the top of his desk. He glanced at the screen, then back at me, annoyance flashing across his face for a fleeting instant."Personally hold that thought?" he said, reaching to answer his phone. "Be right back."I nodded as he stepped out of the office, leaving me behind to pretend to admire this almost sterile space. Skyline of the city pierced through the glass panes beyond. I was reminded at how far both of us had travelled.Moments later, Amethyst's phone rang in the silence. I pic

The air between us steadied itself, but the dim light of the restaurant cast shadows over the stare he gave me. My heart was pounding-with the thrill of holding the upper hand rather than out of fear. His plea hung heavy in the air and weighed upon him."Nicolai, let's be frank," I said in a calm, assertive voice. "I appreciate your feelings, but marriage isn't on my radar; I'm in the middle of rising up my company," and that had to come first. He hesitated, flickers of disappointment dancing in his eyes. "I know that, but—"No buts," I said tartly but politely enough, cutting him off as he was getting to the point. "I don't want to be pushed into anything. If you want to be in my life, you will have to respect my timeline."He leans back in his chair, really hearing my words. "I'll wait for you, Amethyst. I want to prove myself to you."Said I, looking up to meet his unwavering stare. But that's where this comes in: I wouldn't take anything less than what I could have earned. You're

"You can wait a little while."I had hung up before she could say a word; the jarring click of hanging up was almost slyly satisfying. She could wait; she'd always expect me to come running, but those days were over. I was no longer her puppet.I went to the restaurant in time, accompanied by the heel strike on the pavement. The world outside waited for a breathless second as I emerged from the car; sunbeams danced on its glossy metallic surface. Heads turned, and I didn't care. I had not come here to be adored.I entered the dining room, my footfalls needing no words to command attention. There she sat -- my so-called mother -- already seated, nervously fidgeting with her napkin. She looked older, fragile than when I'd last seen her. Life hadn't been nice to her; and then, a part of me took satisfaction in that fact.I barely nod to her when going to the table. I sit slowly, unleashing my quietness on her; she squirms under its pressure. Sh

And the sun is slowly setting outside: all golden glow as it touches everything it finds. Only too bright, after all. I wanted to drown my madness, wash away the thoughts clinging close to me. So I pulled out my cell phone and dialed Victoria's number.“Hey, Amethyst, she replied, her voice silky.“What's on your mind?”"Want a drink. Let's meet at El Nido?"There was a pause for one beat on her part. She knew it was that every time I called her out like that-no small talk and questions, just support."Give me thirty minutes," she said, and I could hear her shuffling, probably already grabbing her purse. "You okay?"I let out a dry laugh. "I will be after a few bottles of wine."I didn't even wait for a reply. I placed the phone on the table and pushed it into my bag. I wasn't going to justify myself to Victoria. She knew me better than anyone. And tonight wasn't about dissecting emotions or hashing out the past; it was about drowning the madness that had been festering in me since th

GIDEON’S POVIt had grown dark by the time I got out of the car and was throwing that golden light across the driveway. I pressed my temple where, I felt, the weight of the day lay. The company was in trouble, one of our biggest investors having pulled out. I had spent hours trying to salvage what was left. As I approached the front door, I could hear raised voices inside. Alexa and her mother.I crept into the room quietly, just in time to hear the voice of Alexa break into the house."Why do you always ask me for money? I'm not an ATM, Mother! You're not my responsibility anymore.”Her mother, Mrs Sanchez, spoke in a softer tone almost as a pleading. "I tried to ask Amy to help. But she's different now. Not the same person—she's Amethyst Amadeus. Heartless, Alexa. She won't help us."I moved aside, stepping out of the living room, and listened. "Amy …. Her name still stung, even now. The problem wasn't that. That was everything collapsing around me.”Alexa’s voice turned cold, dripp

The wedding day began with a haze of tension and forced smiles. Amethyst's heart hammered in her chest as she sat in the limousine, the fabric of her wedding gown pooling around her. The air felt stifling despite the car's air conditioning, and every passing moment seemed to pull her further into Nicolai’s trap. Her phone buzzed. The screen flashed with a breaking news alert, the banner at the bottom reading:"LIVE: BOMB THREAT REPORTED AT AMADEUS ENTERPRISES BUILDING."Her breath caught in her throat. The screen displayed shaky footage of employees evacuating the building. Police cars were parked outside, their lights casting ominous flashes of red and blue. Amid the chaos, the camera zoomed in on a familiar figure entering the building: Gideon Grayson.Amethyst's pulse raced as fear clawed its way up her throat. Gideon was going into the building—a bomb-rigged building—and she was on her way to a farce of a wedding."No!" she whispered, clutching the phone tightly. Panic surged as s

  • Kneel Before Me, Ex-husband   Chapter 153: The bomb

Nicolai's words echoed in my mind like a constant drumbeat, each syllable reminding me of the precarious position I was in. The bomb, the ring, the wedding—everything felt like a twisted game he was playing with me, and I was caught in the middle. But beneath it all, a fire still burned in me, refusing to be extinguished. As Nicolai went on, detailing every intricate aspect of the wedding plans, I forced myself to focus. His voice became a hum in the background as my thoughts began to shift inward. I couldn't let him think he'd won. Not yet.He paused, waiting for me to respond to something he had said. I snapped back to reality. "I'm sorry, what?" I asked, feigning distraction. He frowned, his sharp gaze assessing me. "Are you even listening, Amethyst?" His tone was suddenly colder, suspicion creeping into his voice."Of course," I replied, offering a strained smile. "I just... I'm trying to imagine everything. It sounds perfect." The words felt like acid on my tongue, but I forced t

Nicolai’s smirk returned, but it was tinged with something cruel, something that made the air in the room feel heavier. He moved closer, his presence suffocating, until he stood mere inches from me. “You still think this is a negotiation, don’t you?” he said, his voice low and mocking. “That you have some kind of choice. But let me show you just how wrong you are.”Before I could react, he grabbed my wrist and yanked me toward the center of the room. I stumbled, barely catching myself as he dragged me to a small table I hadn’t noticed before. On it sat a sleek black device—unassuming at first glance, but the red light blinking steadily on its surface told me it was anything but ordinary. My blood ran cold.“What... what is that?” I asked, my voice faltering for the first time.Nicolai’s smile widened, predatory and triumphant. “This,” he said, gesturing to the device, “is the key to your compliance.”He pressed a button on the side, and a small screen lit up, displaying a digital map

The sharp sting in my wrist reverberated as I clutched it to my chest, glaring up at Nicolai. His smirk was infuriating, and his dark eyes gleamed with satisfaction. But I wasn't going to let him see my fear—not again."You’re wrong," I spat, my voice steady despite the tremor threatening to break through. "I’m not yours. Not anymore."He leaned in, so close I could feel his breath against my face. "You’ll realize soon enough, Amethyst. You belong to me. Always have. Always will." His tone was low, almost a whisper, but the venom in his words was unmistakable. The car jolted as it turned sharply, and I used the momentary imbalance to push against him with all my strength. Nicolai stumbled back slightly, his grip loosening just enough for me to lunge for the door handle. My heart raced as I yanked at it, desperate for an escape, but it didn’t budge. Child locks. Of course."You didn’t think I’d make it that easy, did you?" Nicolai taunted, his voice calm despite the chaos in the confi

The sharp pressure of Nicolai's hand around my waist was suffocating, as though his grip was the only thing holding me to the world. I felt the panic clawing at my chest, but I forced myself to breathe steadily. There had to be a way out. I couldn’t let him drag me back into his hell.As we stood there in the middle of my office, the sound of footsteps echoed faintly outside, but no one seemed to notice the tension thickening the air. Nicolai’s eyes locked onto mine with that same unsettling intensity, the familiar mixture of possessiveness and danger swirling in his gaze."You’re not going anywhere," he growled, his voice dangerously soft. "I’ve already taken care of the people outside. No one will know you’re missing. Not until I’m ready for them to."A cold shiver ran down my spine. How did he do this? How did he always manage to control every situation, every person around him? I could feel the anger and helplessness bubbling within me, but I needed to think. I couldn’t just let h

I gripped the phone tighter, my pulse racing as Nicolai's words echoed in my ears. "You think you can walk away from me? From us? You think you can just erase everything we've been through? No, Amethyst, you're not done until I say you are."I took a deep breath, trying to steady myself. "I don't owe you anything anymore, Nicolai. You had your chance, and you lost me. This is over."There was a long silence on the other end of the line, and for a moment, I thought the call had ended. But then Nicolai's voice returned, low and dangerous."You don't get to decide that, Amethyst. You're mine. And I'll remind you just how much you're mine."The hairs on the back of my neck stood on end. I could feel the tension in the air, thick and suffocating, as though he was already close, watching, waiting. I wasn’t sure if it was just my imagination, but I could have sworn I heard the faintest rustle on the other side of the phone, like the sound of a door opening. Before I could respond, the call a

  • Kneel Before Me, Ex-husband   Chapter 148: Bothered heart

Days passed, each one slipping by in a blur of activity and emotions I couldn’t seem to shake. It was as though the weight of the past hung over me, suffocating at times, but the presence of Gideon beside me provided a semblance of stability.Yet even his reassuring presence couldn’t erase the constant unease gnawing at the edges of my thoughts. Nicolai’s shadow still loomed large in my life, and I knew that my decision to walk away from him hadn’t gone unnoticed. I spent those days trying to ignore the anxiety that tugged at my heart, trying to convince myself that everything was fine, that the past was behind me. But the reality of what I’d left behind was too real to ignore. Nicolai wasn’t the kind of man who let people walk away from him without consequences.I was standing on the balcony one evening, the cool breeze brushing my face, when Victoria—my ever-vigilant assistant and best friend—came to join me. Her face was etched with concern, and she didn’t need to ask to know what

The following days felt like a delicate dance—one where I was constantly aware of the fragile balance between what I wanted to believe and the lingering doubts that gnawed at the edges of my thoughts. Each moment with Gideon felt like a small victory, but the weight of Nicolai’s threat still loomed over us, unspoken yet present in the quiet spaces between our words.Gideon’s presence grounded me, and I found myself leaning on him more than I thought I ever would. But beneath the comfort, I couldn’t shake the nagging fear that Nicolai was still out there, a shadow hanging over everything, threatening to destroy it all. Nicolai wasn’t a man who took kindly to betrayal or failure. The moment I’d left him, the moment I’d walked away, I knew he wouldn’t just let it go. I wasn’t sure how, but I knew that he would find a way to make me pay.On one particularly cold evening, as the sun dipped low and the sky bled into hues of purple and gold, I found myself once again on the balcony, wrapped

The days that followed were a delicate balance of old habits and new emotions, a quiet dance between familiarity and the tentative trust that had begun to grow between us. Gideon’s presence was steady, unassuming, yet it grounded me in ways I hadn’t expected. It wasn’t just the words he’d spoken or the kiss we’d shared—it was the way he existed in my space without demanding anything more than what I could give.Still, my mind raced when I was alone, questions swirling in the silence of the night. Could I really let my guard down? Could I trust someone again, after everything that had happened? The answers weren’t clear, but I found myself drawn to him in ways that scared and soothed me all at once.On a brisk evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon and painted the sky in shades of amber and violet, I found myself on the balcony, wrapped in a blanket. The cool air nipped at my skin, but it was refreshing, a reminder that the world kept moving forward no matter how tangled my thoug
