He gave small greetings to the Queen of the Voneveir Kingdom, his wife, who gave him nothing but a small, cold reply.
"Good morning."
In front of him, countless dishes were prepared on a long table. All seats had extravagant decorations, specially created to be solely used by the royals.
Soon, the door opened, revealing Allan, their son, the sole heir to the throne, and Rosan's beloved son.
"Good morning, Mother. Just seeing you reassures me that it will be a pleasant day."
He smiled brightly as he received a sweet and loving reply from his mother.
"Take your seat now. Let us enjoy the food while it is served hot."
"Yes, Mother."
Smiling at the sight, Alexis found this scene familiar, as it was what he always saw each morning when they all gathered for breakfast.
Marrying Rosan to have her family’s support was a mutual contract. He would have Rosan as the Queen to help him lead the kingdom, in exchange, she would have the power as the Queen. Even her family would have power as they were the family of Voneveir’s Queen. But not all marriages end up having love. Even though they already had a child, Allan, who was now of the right age to lead, he was born out of the responsibility to bear an heir who would lead the Voneveir when the time came.
"Allan, how was your study?"
"Good, just like what they are reporting to you."
Wanting to get closer, each time he tried to, he ended up building more walls that separated them. Until he no longer knew that those walls would one day be the reason why Allan was able to do a horrible thing to him.
"Your Majesty! Your Majesty!"
The head maid of the palace shouted, wanting to catch the attention of the king. But the guards wouldn’t let her get any closer. For having that attitude, she was under suspicion for not giving greetings before speaking.
"You have to see Her Majesty! She… she… fell from the tower! Your Majesty, Your Highness, the Queen…"
Problems after problems, he was not able to come up with a plan to address the drought that was happening in the west, and the soldiers were in panic as the other kingdom was raising their troops as if they were getting ready for a war. Adding up what he heard, his mind could not take it.
Shivering, he never thought that the day would come and this would happen. It was not part of what he hoped the future would be.
"Bring me to where she is."
He firmly said as he held his composure to not break.
Even if it was not love that led them to this marriage, even if he knew that she did not love him any bit, there was no way that Alexis would deny that he cared for Rosan. She was the most beautiful woman he ever met. She was the most calm and gentle flower he ever saw in a garden full of thorny ones.
But even if the marriage happened and he knew that Rosan did not like it any bit, he kept his thoughts saying it was for the kingdom. It was a responsibility that they had to fulfill. For the bright future of Voneveir.
It is for the greater good.
Walking at a pace faster than usual, clanging sounds of his garments could be heard hitting each other. On a fine day when the sun was so bright and shining above, birds chirping with their singing sounds, he saw the sight of the most beautiful flower he ever saw… covered in red with her own blood. Hands wide open… as if she accepted her fall.
"R-Rosan…"
He mumbled with his shaking voice. That is when Conor gave the order to let anyone else in here be gone. From what he saw, it was the very first time Alexis had that sorrowful tone. Not at the funeral of the former king, not even at the funeral of his mother, the former queen.
On a fine day that none would have ever thought something tragic would happen, on such a wonderful day that anyone who saw it would tell that it was a perfect day, no one would dare agree that it would be the best day for someone to die.
"Why…"
"M-Mother? Mo-Mother!!"
Pushing Alexis away, even if Allan was just a prince and Alexis was the king, it seemed like he had no care for what he was doing. Pushing him away, he caressed Rosan’s body, kissing her forehead as he let tears fall from his eyes.
"Mother, wake up! Mother! You promised to travel with me… didn’t you? Who did this to you? Who did this!!"Shouting as he sobbed, he then had his face turn mad as he looked at the guards."What are you doing standing still?!! Didn’t you see??! My mother was hurt! Go call the physician right now! Call the mages, the healers, call them in this instant!!!""Allan…"He called, wanting to wake up his son who still had hope that Rosan would wake up if those he called would arrive. Indeed, he did not wish to accept the fact that when someone loses their heartbeat… when someone stops breathing… all things are gone."She is gone…"Hearing those words from his father, whom he never even recognized as his, he could not help but explode in anger."You… this is all your fault. This is all your fault!! If not for you then Mother would still be alive!! What good are you as a king if even you can’t save her life??! Tell me!!""Allan… I never wanted this to happen-"Slapping his hand away, his son’s eyes filled with nothing but despise looked at him. As if he was looking at the most horrible sight of a being he could ever see. As if he wasn’t looking at the king… or his father....Looking at his reflection with his face having cotton on his nose and a bandage on his elbow, Alex was well aware of how useless he was. Even as a king, he had no power at all. He didn’t even know how to protect himself and those that he wanted to protect."I am useless…"He uttered, making Cielo hear what he said."Even a sword is useless when not sharpened. Is it not?"Cielo was now wearing clothes that were his usual. With Frank sleeping on the only bed they had in that room, he was leaning on the corner of the stairs while looking at Alex."Brother Cielo…""What?""Help me.""What??"Confused by what Alex was saying, it was his first time seeing those eyes in others. As if they were shouting in determination that no one could even stop him from doing so. 'Seems like this kid finally found his goal.'"I want you to help me… help me be strong."'Did I have those eyes when I made my decision to go here and earn money?'Cielo chuckled at his thought, thinking that what he was feeling might be the same as what his mother felt when he made that big decision he knew no one could hinder him in doing so."Get strong?""Yes, teach me everything you know. I want to be strong… enough to protect myself so that no one will protect me…"'So that no one will die because of me…'"And so that I can protect those I cherish…"His words were carved in Cielo’s mind."Protecting those you cherish… I like that. Sure. But let me remind you, kid, that getting stronger is not like sleeping and waking up. You must remember that you have to get through lots of hell. Lots….""Good morning, young lad, up here for the usual?" Nodding his head, Alex had a smile on his lips. "Yes, Mrs. Marter, I can’t start the day without the bread you made." Chuckling at Alex's words, the old lady had a smile on her lips. "That is how good my breads are. Here, I added an extra bread. It was an experiment my granddaughter made by herself. Do tell me how it tastes. And ah! Congratulations on finally becoming an adult!" "Thank you, Mrs. Marter! Surely it will taste good, thank you for the treat!" Smiling as she chuckled, Mrs. Marter then welcomed the new customers. "Mrs. Marter, you seem to be close with that kid. Isn’t he the Alex that is Cielo’s nephew?" "Yes, that is indeed him. You know, Cielo is lucky to have a kind nephew. Both Frank and Alex surely are the talk of the town." The town was still as lively as it had ever been. One could say that after all these years, many things changed. But it was for the better. After all, the Voneveir guards, as well as those o
“Hey Frank, you tell me what happened! Who did that to you?! Tell me!” As soon as he sat down on the chair given by Alex, Cielo did a rampage on his shelves. He looks for any medicine that he can find. “Nothing, really… I am fine” Frank tries to avoid the topic. Not wanting to worry Cielo any further, it ended up causing the very man to explode in anger. “You don’t fuckin tell me you are. What do you think would Clad do to me if he ever saw you be in that state?? Clad would surely kill the hell out of me! Do you get it??!” “But…” “No buts. We talked about this already. You two must keep your safety first above all else. Now what did you do?” Not looking at the eyes of the mad Cielo, Frank tried to run his way out of his suspicions. But as good and kind-hearted as he is, it was known by many how he finds it hard to tell lies or even say things that are far from what he really thinks it was. With that being said, Frank is one of those person you can read whatever he thinks of it.
“Hey kid, have you seen this person? He was this tall and was wearing a gray cloak” said the guards that was looking for Frank. Alex then put an innocent smile on his face. “Why? Are you going to recruit him as a soldier?” About to laugh at what he said, the guard then smiled suppressing his laughter. ‘What a fool’ “Yes, how did you know? We are looking for him because we saw his capabilities as we ran into him one time. Such talent can’t be wasted. Don’t you agree?” A small smirk then falls hidden in Alex’s lips. “Yes sir! He is very talented. I always watch him practice swords in the lake not far from the outside of the gate. He is really cool when he uses his sword, he goes bam boom wush washa!” giggling, if anyone can hear him say those words, they would surely think of how childish he is. “Yes yes, he surely is a great person handling a sword. So you know where that guy was?” “Yes! I know him too well. Let's go and see him. Hurry! He always leaves before it gets too lat
‘What is he doing in here? Isn’t he grounded for a whole week??’ Running to where they were, he halted once he saw how other guards were coming in their direction. ‘Better not add fuel to the fire…’ “Don’t you think you are going overboard??” Chuckling, the guards look at Frank from head to toe. And his features did not even scare them any bit. ‘Ah, just a weakling we have here. Acting like a fucking damn hero shit’ They thought to themselves. “Look what we have here, acting like a hero are we?” Bumping to his shoulder, one of the guards then spoke his words that made a ring in Alex’s ears. “I think I have seen you before” Mumbling to himself he carefully analyzes Frank. ‘Did he see Frank too?’ “Ah! I remember it now” “What?” “Isn’t he that guy?” “Now that you mention it… I think I remember” Holding his sword, Alex pours some mana on it, ready to charge his attack any time soon. “Isn’t he that frail guy who can’t even kill a slime??” Even Frank had a sigh of relief
“F… Frank… “ ***Earlier that day*** “Frank, remember what I said, is that clear?” “Yes Brother Cielo, and sorry” Looking back at the two, Cielo then walks back and hugs the two of them. “I have to go back to my hometown. It was a sudden but as I can see you two can manage without me. Don’t get caught in any trouble, okay? Wait for Clad, I am not sure if he would come but I tried reaching him” “You know where Brother Clad is? Is he doing good? Is he alright?” Frank asked with his face smiling in hopes that he might find news about Clad. They haven’t heard about him for ages. The last time they saw each other was the time they first met Cielo. Such words about the whereabouts of Clad just made his spirit light up. “About that…” Seeing his face, there is no possible way Cielo would be able to tell that he have no damn idea about what it was about. But thinking that it would not be bad to lie sometimes, he smiled and petted their head “Yes of course he is doing alright. It was hi
As he looks at the pile of guards that are now lifeless, Alex looks at the people who saw what he did. Some are shocked; they can’t even speak a word. 'Frank, I killed them' He looked back at where Frank was. He is not moving; he looks like he is sleeping from afar. Alex’s lips are shaking, and his hands are still trembling. ‘And not just someone, I killed the guards of the kingdom' Walking to where Frank was, he did not let himself suppress the pain in him. ‘I have killed them, yet you are still not moving.' Even when Rosan died, he did not feel pain as hurtful as this. It is also more painful than when Conor died. ‘I am a failure. In the end, I still didn’t fulfill my promise. In the end, someone precious to me still died. Just how much more would you take from me? Just how much more do you want me to suffer??!’ “What else do you want?!! WHAT ELSE!!?” As he mourns for his dead friend, even the thunder reflects his anger. Even the sky shouts pain. Droplets by droplets, water
Heading to the kitchen, no one answers his call. 'He told me something feels off, and now they are gone...' The realization then struck him. 'Shit... Did something bad happen to them? ' Sounds of someone knocking on the door then echoed in the house. "Hello? May I know why you are here? What is your business in this house?" "Who are you?" "I am Cielo's neighbor. He left a week ago, and he hasn't come back ever since." 'So he left... ' "With the two brats?" "So you know Frank and Alex?" 'This man knows too much. Maybe he knows where they are. "Yes, where are they?" Diverting his gaze, the old man did not look at the guy he was talking to. "Is there something I need to know?" "I don't know if I should be telling this." He then pulls out a gold coin from his hand. "Is this enough to make you talk?" Surprised by what he did, the old man took a step backward and shook his hand. "No, no, I don't need that. I was just worried." Shaking his head, he then looks at the guy.
"I also wonder why... If only I could, I would be glad to take his place. I would be glad to die in his stead. If it means that Frank can live, then I will gladly do so." Falling on the ground, his feet can't move as Clad holds them with his earth manipulation. But even so, Alex did not try to get out and run away. "Then die" Closing his eyes, Alex also wonders to himself why he isn't afraid to die. 'Is it because I have no one left for me to keep on living? Is it because I just don't find myself happy if I live? ' All this time, he feels alive because Frank showed him how to. Now that he is gone, it is back to square one. As if everything turns black again. As if life has no colors anymore. He just realized that the very reason why he can live is all because of the fact that Frank is with him. Frank is by his side and all. "If you are glad to die now, I wouldn't let you die." Opening his eyes, Clad pulls out his sword and looks at the burning Voneveir palace walls. "If you wa
