Friday bloomed with rain clouds decorating the sky and the wind blowing up a tantrum, the howling noise fleeting in through the open blinds waking me before my alarm clock. The cold accompanying the rain seeping through the walls, chilling the room. Graduation day, I thought to myself, breathing deeply as I smelled the rain. Yawning, I padded gently to the front of my wardrobe where I had hung up my gown and cap, smiling widely as I fingered the material, imagining myself flinging my cap. Two days before, I had succeeded in completing my project and getting a positive result on the two tests I had run it on.
Finished getting ready, the yellow dress I had bought hugging my lithe curves, my hair swept up in a messy bun as I stared into the mirror, my hand coming up to the faint bruise on the top of collar bone. I touched the twin circle marks, my head pounding drastically as I tried to recall how I had gotten the mark, my panic coating the room as the obvious scenario of what had happened fleeted through my mind. Not only could I not recall how I had gotten the bruise, I couldn't remember the events of the past week either, my mind a blank page until the Monday of this week.
Shaking my head and declaring no thoughts were going to spoil my day, I went downstairs, my heels clicking on the tiles as I entered the kitchen and found a bouquet of roses placed carefully on the counter, a folded handwritten note by its side. Flipping open the note, I read my dad's words, grinning like an unabashed school girl, 'In the case, you come down before me. There's no day that I've never been proud of you and awed by your personality and strength, awed by your magnificent brain and how it works, awed by the way you carry yourself and tackle every challenge that comes your way. I'm super proud of you and will forever be honoured to be called your father, cupcake. Now let's go fling that cap'. I put the roses to my nose and tried to breathe away the waterworks forming. Feeling a presence behind me, I turned and ran into my father's outstretched arms, bawling like a baby.
"Happy Graduation, cupcake", He said, pressing a kiss on my forehead. "She would have been super proud of you too", he added and I cried my eyes out, cried my heart out too, missing her, finding it hard to breathe, wondering what she would have thought about my dress. I cried for my mum.

Seated in the big auditorium holding hands with my best friends as the valedictorian of our class recited his speech, charging us to make a difference and bla bla bla, I stopped listening, my eyes surveying the hall, catching the eyes of my dad, I smiled widely and continued my search, cataloging the people I knew. Kane's mum, decked out in jewels, stood out, her black hair straightened to perfection, her purple gossamer matching the blue of her eyes. A quick search around her proved what I already suspected, Kane's father wasn't in attendance. So was Jacob St. Laurent, not in attendance, my gut said, after another quick survey. The name calling began, starting with our arm and I watched in anticipation as my classmates walked to the podium on hearing their names.
'Dalia Renee Paul' my name was called and time stilled for me as I walked up to the podium, my neck prickling in sensation. Receiving my certificate and smiling for the camera, I walked down as another person was called, feeling a particular set of eyes on me as I made my way back to my seat. Sitting, I shook away the feeling and watched the ceremony, aware that I was being watched.
The selection proper started an hour later, like an open exhibition day, we were ordered back to our various labs to prep and add finishing touches. By my stand, a newly made's blood in a vial, the thumbprint sensor plugged into my computer, as I wrung my hands. With my friends in the next room, nobody to increase my esteem, I awaited my fate.
Vampires started trooping in, their surreal bodies causing jaw drops mine included as they began moving around, their daylight ring glinting in the light. The daylight ring was what enabled them to walk out under the sun, the cost of one showed how high up you were in the vampires inner circle, and how rich you were. Some had been half vampires who had probably undergone the change, I thought as a few made their way to my stand. Placing an award winning smile on my face, I explained what my project was all about. Asking for a volunteer among the spectators, by now I had gathered a crowd, I placed his thumb on the sensor and his data came up on my computer, viewing his name, his age, a little above a century, his occupation, house address and how many he had made, ten. Clicking a few buttons, the ten mades details came up on my screen with the help of my program, earning me gasps and murmurs from the crowd. Thanking the beautiful man for volunteering, I took the vial from the table, placing a drop on the alter part of the sensor I had developed a month ago, the details of the newly made popping up immediately, gleaning the information, I scrolled down to reveal his location at the moment and the vampire who had made him. And the crowd erupted in a cheer, admiring my work, I took a bow, spotting a few jotting down my name as the crowd moved on. The day quickly bled into night, as we were ordered back into our classrooms to view our postings, catching up with Sacha, who was absentmindedly munching her thumbnail and Kane, who looked ecstatic as always. I hugged them from behind and let out a squeal, signaling my presentation had gone well and asked them about theirs. They both affirmed, although Sacha was still munching away in concealed anxiety. Their head, Jean-Marc walked in few minutes later, congratulating them on the success of their presentation and jumped straight into a lecture, revealing an information that no one had ever told us, ' The half vampire system expires on turning 19', he began, "Before then, you are given a choice if you want to undergo the change which may sometimes lead to death or remain human, thereby forfeiting your vampire side. That's what the Fangs Academy has always been about, since it's grassroot days, modelling half vampires to be able to face the change, before the implementation of the selection and the arms. I implore you to choose your path wisely". "With that said, your placements", he called out, without waiting for us to process the information that had just been ingested in our brains, the screen popped up on the white board behind him, from the hanging projector, showing our names and placements. Scanning the lines in search of my name, my mates collective gasps as they spotted their names reaching my ears, scanning harder for a 'D' but coming up short. Skimming through the list again, my heart in my throat as I came up short again. Turning to find Sacha and Kane staring at me, shocked wistful expressions marring their faces. I shook my head, unbelieving, as I skimmed through the list for the third time, getting the same result. I hadn't made the selection.
Two days later after several assurances to my friends and dad that I was alright, I sat somberly in my room, reminding myself that I was supposed to be down for dinner in ten minutes or face my dad's fussing. Wondering for the thousandth time what had gone wrong or why or how something could have gone wrong as I nibbled on my dinner, mumbling one word answers to my dad's unrelenting questions. Playing with the scrambled eggs on my plate, imagining a police and thief scenario when the doorbell rang unexpectedly causing my dad to glance up from his food, his eyebrow quirking in silent, 'Are you expecting anyone?' question. The bell rang again, accompanied by a light knock, propelling dad to the door with me following behind, curious to see who it was. My dad opened the door cautiously, hiding me behind his body as he talked to the person through the little crack the opened door had created. After several seconds of muffled replies from the stranger behind the door, my dad opened the door wide and the person came into my view, a vampire, his ethereal glow giving him out before I looked down to spot his daylight ring. Frowning, I studied the face I was sure I had seen somewhere. The volunteer during my project display, my mind clicked and I stared in confusion. His honey eyes glued to me.
"What can we do for you?", Dad asked, breaking me out of my haze and going straight to the point. The tall, beautiful man with skin like bronzed ivory and face like Zeus, opened his mouth and let out in a lilting voice, "Dalia Renee Paul has been selected to intern for Laurent's Lab and is expected to report in by tomorrow morning".
Watching his mouth move and not catching his words until my brain played back, "What?", I shouted, barely believing and seriously wondering if I was being pranked. I looked to my dad, finding him staring at the man.
Producing a card from his Dior dove grey suit, the man handed it to my giddy hands, notifying me to be on time tomorrow, before taking his leave not bothering with a goodbye.
Short of jumping up and down, I shrieked in excitement, remembering the smooth card in my hands, which read 'Selected Laurent's Lab' in gold bold italics.
All nerves and anxiety, dressed in my favourite purple floral gown, I walked into the skyscraper marked Laurent's Inc. in gold, the size of the building adding to my fastly diminishing self esteem. The woman at the front desk, placed a serene smile on her face, as she noticed me walking up to her, probably sensing my timidness. "Good day, how may I help you?", the lady asked, her golden brown hair packed away from her face in an uptight bun, her red lipstick complementing her green dress, as she smiled. "Hi", I responded, still trying to gather my wits around me and showed her the card I had been given last night. "Lab is on floor 30", she replied automatically, glancing at the card, the smile still plastered on her face before pointing me in the direction of the elevator. Thanking her, I walked to the elevator, wondering how many floors the building housed and how many people worked in it. Pressing the number 30 on the elevator keypad, I relaxed against the wall as the elevator asc
Test running my programmed app to the six major shareholders of Laurent's Inc., excluding the owner, using Andrew; an eighty year old vampire. I collected his print, inputting it into the app and let the program run its course. A beeping sound filled the silent room, as my app identified five newly made vampires Andrew had turned and their locations. Resounding applause came up from all over the room as I clicked off the projector, done with my presentation. After four weeks of working in Laurent's Lab and I had developed my program further with the help of their database and facilities, and had been invited today to the shareholder's meeting to present my project to them. I walked out of the meeting room, my heart in my shaky legs as I went back to my office, Claude's scent of lavender and sex following me, meaning I had done well and had gotten his approval. An hour later, Claude walked in, an eminent grin plastered on his face, "You did great out there, D". We had resorted to a fir
I walked into my office, the sunny weather contrasting with my mood. I hadn't slept well last night, I hadn't slept well in a while now and I'm pretty sure the black eyes I had used concealer was a visible greenlight on my appearance today.Apparently I wasn't the only one with a surly mood as Claude didn't even spare me a glance as I sat on my desk beside his."Good morning", I said, inflecting false cheer into my voice as I powered on my laptop."What's good about it?", Claude mumbled, his ocean blue eyes dim."I don't know, the fact that you're not staked meat for the sun", I jibed and his lips tilted a little bit. Or I was just seeing things again."The sun has no effect on me darling, try harder next time", he countered, his eyes twinkling with suppressed mirth. I googled the word bots, and read every single piece of article that Google deemed worthy as an answer to my search. My eyes scouring over pages and pages of artificial intelligence. My phone rang, diverting me from wha
We were to meet at the bar close to Laurent's Inc. to discuss strategy, or that's what I thought the meeting Vanir had scheduled was for as I walked into the bar, JP Cooper's voice serenading the air from a jukebox.I ordered a dry martini and settled into my seat waiting for my partner to show his face, the events of the day replaying through my mind. Lanie's shock at finding out, according to her, that the hunk of lickable, fuckable pure male was my partner still made me laugh till this point. The waiter dropped off my drink, informing me that the drink had already been paid for as I brought out my card.Checking the time, I sipped my drink, the having to wait, grating on my nerves. The bane of my existence walked in ten minutes later, greeting the waiter with familiar familiarity as he headed towards me, his eyes glinting and his teeth flashing."Dalia", he breathed out my name, like oxygen, essential for survival."A minute more and you would have had yourself a table for one", I
The bots finally attacked.Running into floor 30, my legs on fire figuratively, as I entered the project room, the gloominess and tension palpable as everyone focused on the screen hanging up the wall, watching live feeds of the attack. They had rained down in a mass of ten at the Schreps Mall, taking human hostages, shooting and destroying properties. "They had started operating from the start of work, passing off as humans to gain access", Lanie informed, her face gloom."Have they made any demands?", I asked, my eyes wide in frantic worry as the robots started segregating half vampires from humans. "No"."What about the police? Why aren't they doing anything?", I asked, horror coating my bones as people screamed from the television."They can't get in, it's being locked from the inside""That's not possible. A large and populous shopping mall would have more than two entrances", I cried out."The attack was well planned", Lanie answered, tears slipping down her cheeks as she watc
I moaned out in ecstasy as two of his fingers slipped into me, his other hand palming my breast roughly as he growled his approval, his fingers sliding in and out of my wet channel, pumping greedily. I closed my eyes in sweet agony, as his tongue sneaked into my mouth battling my senses, the scent of chocolate filled the room as I cried out from the torture, opening my eyes to see my faceless sexual tormentor finally had a face. Vanir.----------------------------------------------Lanie handed me a cup of coffee as we headed to the project room, people's chatter floating out into the hallway. The bots had been silent ever since their first attack a week ago. I hadn't seen Vanir since then either. The room quieted as our assistant floor manager walked in for another briefing, his daylight ring glinting gold in the light as he walked to the front of the room and turned to face us, "I commend the hard work you have all put towards seeing that the menaces sponsoring this chaotic mess c
Kane's birthday party was to be held in a club. A vampire club.Putting it into consideration that his father might get wind of it, we had rented out the whole VIP section under hush hush terms, not disclosing our names as we made payments. We had gone for the bad and boujee theme, getting decorations in gold, and, after several unending pleas, pink, for the party. The drinks were to be delivered by the bar and the party was tonight.I felt my phone vibrate in my purse and I took it out answering without knowing who it was, "Hello?"Sacha's voice filled my ear as she asked, "Have you picked up the cake yet?"Sighing, I pressed the button for the top floor in the elevator, the doors closing before I answered, "No I haven't, I'll do so this afternoon".Sacha hummed in approval, pausing for a second, then shouting anxiously down the line to my ear, "I don't know what to get for him"."Sacha, Kane's being annoyingly persistent over a birthday gift for the past two weeks now. What do you m
The bots attack on a vampire establishment had the newly mades and the vampires antsy, talks and murmurs of why the 'king of Vampires' hadn't done anything to quell the situation coming up on everyone's lips.Rumours circulating round that he was dead, the vampire population going wild with leashed fury, waiting, just waiting to be provoked once again. Distress calls, threat calls, all sorts of calls came in from every telephone in Laurent's Inc. either threatening the lives of the human employees or soliciting for protection against the bots or calling to confirm whether Jacob St. Laurent was truly dead; as a result majority of the human employees in Laurent's Inc. were sent home for a one week break until the fray settled.Lanie was among those sent back and I wasn't.I got to work everyday with my heart in my throat, praying that there won't be a repeat of that night ever again in my life.Claude had come to pick us up that night, after the whole shooting had died down and the bot
Epilogue.I sensed her before she came into the bedroom, the door opened and her eyes focused on me like I was her next meal and she intended to ravish me. My sex grew hard from the look in her eyes and the fact that she was finally mine all mine. She closed the door softly behind her and walked like a cat to the feet of my bed. I laid there watching her with heated eyes following every movement the I realized I would give my heart for this woman. She had healed quite nicely in two weeks. The scar on her heart had almost faded and she was glowing. Thanks to the vampire blood running in her veins. Dalia tugged on her robe and dropped it to the ground and my mouth watered. She was wearing nothing underneath. The glorious swell of her breast rose with each of her rapid breaths. “What’s the matter?”, I teased and brought out my hard as a dumbbell cock. My tip was already glistened with prec*m from anticipation. “You can’t stop now”.Dalia’s eyes heated and I think she darted out her
Sacha’s povThey were gone. Like their physical bodies were still intact but they were so still like they had moved to another dimension and left their bodies. I would never fully understand the ways of those folks and I wouldn’t start now because they were pressing issues to be attended to. My best friend was lying lifeless on the floor with a dagger protruding from her chest. I refused to believe she was dead. Dalia couldn’t be dead. No one was appearing out of the shadows. Kane’s mum and what I guessed to be the other chick’s mum laid side by side each other. Dead, unmoving, no more coming back to this world. I didn’t even know what to do. I wanted to run to Dalia’s side but I was so scared that someone was going to come out of the shadows and slice my neck next.I looked at Kane and he didn’t even seem like he was aware of his surroundings. The other girl who I think was Lanie had been mumbling something ever since her mum had been offed and she was still mumbling the same
I stared wide eyed at the figure that loomed over with a dagger in her hand. Her dark hair was flowing down her face and her lips were blood red like she had just finished a blood feast. Her eyes were empty big black balls and I felt the cold she was emanating all the way up to my veins. She wanted me to kill Jacob. She wanted me to kill Jacob to live.I screamed but I couldn’t scream out because of the cloth tied against my mouth.“Go on. Take it”, She nudged the dagger towards me. I started down at the dagger and wondered if this was the infamous blade made from the things Jacob told me a while ago.“Your time is ticking”, the evil woman said and the blade clattered to the floor and out of nowhere a clock started ticking loudly. Like a countdown to a huge bomb.Instead this time, I didn’t know how long I had or what was going to happen to me if I refused to do what she said.My eyes went to Jacob whose face was cleared from every emotion. He wasn’t even looking at me but I unders
This had to end. The damage was already enough, the casualties, the people being locked up in their houses from the fear of what was going. From the panel board, I could see Leon and his team had already arrived at the garden center to help rescue the injured. What exactly did Adriana want? For Jacob to concede the city to her?“She knows St. Laurent is in the city council building”, the vampire that had been put in charge of babysitting me alongside Sydney spoke up.My eyes widened. Jacob was at the city building? He was at the very place 200 bots surrounded at the moment?“What?”, I croaked out. “Why?” “I thought he evacuated along with everyone”“Indirectly this is a fight for his city. You didn’t expect him to cower and hide at the face of his mother”, Sydney retorted, throwing her hair back as she watched the screen with searching eyes. I hadn’t even known when she had appeared.“But he can’t seriously think of facing her alone. See the army she has amassed. This doesn’t even
I ran without looking back, the guards overlooking the place were probably slacking or the cloak I was wearing possessed some kind of ethereal power. The woman had ordered me to close the door behind me and not look back, saying everything was written out in the letter.Hoping the letter was in the envelope, I held it tightly to my chest as I sneaked out from a heavy iron backdoor that was already open.I had a feeling it was the woman’s doing.I walked for a mile or two, seeing nothing but grass all aroundWhere the fuck was I?Now was the time to try that little trick I had been taught once upon a time.I closed my eyes, taking in a deep breath in turn as I imagined my room in Jacob’s historical mansion. The blood red curtains appeared in my mind, or were they lavender colored? The fuck? This wasn’t going to work.I imagined the strategy room where we had stayed the last time to plan, the long table and the oak wood chairs. The wind whooshed through my ears and suddenly five sets o
Jacob's POVGreen eyes stared at me, his eyebrows quirked up in askance but I hadn't been paying attention. My mind was far away from here, my lungs felt tight with every passing minute. Questions swarm through my head, as I stared into space. What was happening to her at the moment? I knew she couldn't be dead because the bond still felt strong but the worry gnawed at me from within."Boss", Sydney voiced and my eyes snapped to hers. "We are awaiting your instructions".My head went blank for a second as I tried to rehash what Leon had said from where he seated opposite.Seeming to know I hadn't heard him, Leon repeated, his green eyes focused and mean, "Words on the street says a number of trucks had been seen moving into the city".I nodded, finally understanding. My birthgiver hadn't been building her soldiers in my city, she'd been transporting them in, right under my nose.I had given her that power.I had given her the power to bring me to my knees and she knew it. My lungs
InterludeHi, my loves. Merry Christmas. Happy new year. Happy new months… I suck…I know. I terribly suck for leaving you all hanging.Well, the past months have been my absolute worst. I've been through things and came out even when I thought I couldn't.Enough of the sob story…blahhThe good news is I'm back…And so is Jacob and Dalia. And…..drumroll please…. Leon and Sacha.Takeover III came to, my head pounding like a mega steel drum.Fuck, this kidnapping shit never gets old, does it?I blink, the lights like sears piercing through my corneas. My eyes adjusted quickly and I found out my hands were tightly cinched behind me.I looked around nervously, my heart rate tripling and sweat rolling like a snail down my back. The memories came back and I tried to swallow my fear. Michael, Adriana, there were a lot of people with me on their shit list, even though I had done absolutely nothing to deserve being on there.A noise sounded outside the small room and I closed my eyes immedi
No, I shook my head rapidly, my eyes still wide with shock. It wasn't possible.Michael smiled and walked into the house, his eyes scanning the place.Sacha, the thought flickered in my head. Sacha was in the kitchen. He was going to see her if she stepped out."How've you been, darling. Did you miss me?" Michael asked, tilting his head a bit as his cold and callous eyes met with mineHow had I never noticed this before? How had I not noticed the cold and calculating nature behind his eyes?"What do you want?", I managed to ask even as my head was going haywire with what to do. "A lot of things, sweet cheeks", He answered and Sacha chose that horrible moment to step out. Her eyes were wide and there was a butcher knife in her clenched fists."Get out", she seethed and the tension in the air grew more rigid. No, I screamed in my head. Michael was dangerous, surely she was bluffing about confronting him with a butcher knife.I stepped in front of her as Michael's smile grew and his fan
I kissed him like my life depended on it... because maybe it did.Jacob hefted me up and my body folded around his, my legs wrapped around his waist and my body melted into him. This was what I had always wanted."We can't do this here", Jacob mumbled at me but kept on nibbling on my mouth.I pulled away, feeling elated as I searched his eyes."You can drop me now", I murmured, looking anywhere but at his mouth."You feel so comfortable right here", He smiled and my heart melted."Sydney and Claude will be back any moment and we still have the Dick situation", I said level headedly Jacob sighed and placed me carefully on my feet. "Come home with me"."No", I stated immediately and watched his head tilt in confusion."No?"I nodded, trying to hide my smile. I took a step back to at least find a breathing space from his magnetic presence."What do you mean, no?""You hurt me more than a couple of times", I answered matter of factly. "Don't you think I'd be stupid if I don't let you wor
