Exploring the city nightlife
Later that evening, I was panicking, nervous, and felt knots in my stomach. I felt little nausea as well because Anna decided to drop me at the last minute. She came up with so many excuses I just had to let her be. She did call Maureen to come and make her magic on me though and I was very grateful, I just hated the fact that I was going to explore the nightlife of Johannesburg without my friend. We always did a lot of things together and clubbing without her didn’t feel right. But I had to go because I already made up my mind about it. And there was no way I was going to lose my luck with Billy because Anna doesn’t feel comfortable.
‘Chomee Maureen is here.’
‘Ok, I am coming.’ I got out of the bedroom in my usual T-shirts and jeans. ‘Hello Maureen, how are you?’
‘Hey, I am good, thanks for asking and yourself?’
‘Wow, that was formal, hahahahaha I am okay.’
‘Good, Anna tells me you are going out tonight and you want to look your best.’
‘Yes, may you please help me. You told me last week that you did a good job with your practicals and I believe you can do me good too. Please say.’
‘Okay hold your horses,’ Maureen said, ‘I will help you of course. But you must first get out of those hideous clothes.’
‘What’s wrong with my clothes,’ I asked with a little disappointment in my voice.
‘You cannot go on your first date in sneakers.’
‘It is not a date, it's just a group of friends meeting for a drink.’
‘Either way, a guy asks you to go out with him, you have to look the part. First impression honey.’
‘Okay, whatever you say, you are the professional and I am the client.’ I said jokingly.
‘I have a red number I can borrow you and beautiful black stilettos.’
‘Stilettos, I have never worn those.’
‘There is always a first time for everything girlfriend,’ Maureen said sternly, now let’s turn Mrs. Shrek to Cinderella.’
‘Geez, as for Mrs. Shrek. Thanks’
‘Hahahahaha sorry.’
Maureen and Anna were both fussing over me. I liked the attention very much, it really felt good that my friends made a big deal out of me. When someone was busy with my hair, the other one was preparing the outfits. I really felt like a bride on her wedding day. Billy called me to confirm and that just made my hair stand. His voice was even more charming on the phone than in real life. I was still nervous about wearing high heels though, but the thought of falling into Billy Andersons arms chased all the fears away. Anna and Maureen really made too much of an effort one me. I looked like a superstar at SAMA awards.
‘Wow chomee, Beyoncé has got nothing on you I tell you that.’ Anna said with her mouth almost dropping. ‘I don’t know how a million dollars look, but you sure look like it.’
‘Hahahahaha get out of here. You just want to make me blush.’ I said teasingly.
‘No she is right,’ Maureen interrupted. ‘You look like Bonang Matheba. I have to say I am proud of myself.’
‘Hey, I also must take credit here, I helped.’ Anna had to remind Maureen.
‘Hahahahaha thank you guys so much, if Billy doesn't make me his girlfriend by the end of tonight, then there is absolutely something wrong with the society.’ I said.
Let me give you a short description of how gorgeous I looked. Maureen changed the way my dreadlocks looked completely into long, shiny, curly locks. She had me wear her red mini dress that just did justice to my figure, hugged my round behind, and revealed my spontaneous cleavage. She applied foundation and all sorts of make-up on my face that just made me look like a Barbie doll. Fake nails, fake eyelashes, matching red lips.... the works. I finished it all off with 12-inch black stilettos and a matching clutch bag. I actually hoped Sharon and her friends would be there just so that my new look can stop them from walking around campus like they were at their personalized castle.
‘Maureen, if I were your lecturer, I would give you an A+. You did a great job.’ I said to my brand new stylist.
‘It is all a pleasure girlfriend. If I can make you look this good, I’m going to have to start charging hahahahaha.’ Maureen teased.
‘I don’t mind, Billy will pay.’ I joked back.
‘So, his name is Billy? Ohkaay nice name.’
‘Yes, Billy Anderson is a perfect name.’
‘Wait, did you say Anderson?’ Maureen interrupted. ‘The Billy Anderson? As in the son of Obed Anderson?’ Maureen looked very shocked.
‘Yes, that one I think....’ I said looking as puzzled as I can be.
‘You think? Girl, are you going out with Mzansi's most eligible bachelor? Oh well, not that famous but his father is one of the wealthiest people in the country. He is like, notoriously wealthy?’
‘What do you mean ‘notoriously’?’ I was beginning to worry now.
‘Don’t you know, his dad is supposedly a dangerous gangster? It was said that he has political connections and he is untouchable. A few years ago, a story about drugs erupted, and he was allegedly involved. Somehow, it disappeared, and nobody spoke about it again.’ Maureen sounded serious. But I was not about to let her burst my bubble. All these things she just told me sounded like a movie or an international news report. It sounded....far-fetched.
‘Oh! Was Billy in any way involved?’
‘No, but....’
‘I like the word you used, ‘allegedly’. I believe Mr. Anderson was and still is innocent until proven guilty. And if he is guilty, what has Billy got to do with it? It is not like I Google potential boyfriends and their fathers before I have to go out with them.’
‘What’s with the attitude now? I am not accusing your boyfriend. I just want you to be careful that’s all.’
‘He is not my boyfriend. And for the record, please give me advice ONLY when I ask for it mxm.’
‘Ok guys, that is enough.’ Anna said. ‘Both of you just need to calm down. I think Petunia must give Billy a chance, a benefit of the doubt. But please be careful.’
‘I will be chomee, I am going out with Billy, not his dad.‘I said with an irate voice.
‘Okay, that’s my cue to leave.’ Maureen said as she was gathering her things. ‘Good luck with your date and have fun. See you guys tomorrow.’ She gathered her stuff and went for the door as quickly as she could.
‘Chomee, don’t you think you were a little harsh on her, she was just sharing some valuable information.’ Anna started as soon as Maureen left.
‘Valuable information? Valuable to whom? Did I ask her to be my PI?’
‘She didn’t mean any harm babe. You have a short temper sometimes; you need to control it.’
‘It is not the temper; it’s just that I get irritated quickly.’
‘That’s a temper then.’ Anna argued back. In a way she was right, I have a tiny bit of a temper.
‘Chomee, why do you think Billy asked a rural girl like to go out with someone of his caliber?’ I was a little concerned and avoiding the temper issue.
‘Maybe he is tired of this Barbie doll wannabes, they can be too much of plastic girls at times. Maybe he wanted someone he has never had before. Someone different from these city girls’.
‘Do you think I might be some sort of an experiment for him? Like he tried all types of girls and now he wants to try me?’ Doubt crept into my voice.
‘Hahahahaha I highly doubt that. I think he might just like you more than we ever thought he would.’
‘I hope so too. For my sake hey.’
‘Is he coming to fetch you here? I mean like, will he be in our apartment?’
‘Yes.’
‘Then we better take all these pictures down, we don’t want him thinking that we are stalking freaks hahahahaha.’
‘Yoh, chomee you are right. Or else all this will be over even before it starts.’ We laughed pleasantly while tearing the pictures apart.
‘I think your date has arrived, let me open for him.’ Anna said while shoving the last pictures into the rubbish bin.I took a deep breath while looking at this new girl in the mirror, a girl that my parents would hardly recognize, a girl that I always yearned to look like. She was a very beautiful girl. And that girl was me.‘Hello, how are you?’ That was Anna, opening the door for Billy.‘I’m good, is she ready?’ Billy asked from the outside.‘Just a minute, I will call her.’ Anna told him as she came to fetch me.
When we were in the bathroom, Ntombi did lend me her powder but Lira had something else. I looked at her throw the powder carefully on the counter and she sniffed it, Carol did the same thing and Ntombi as well. I was stunned. Powdering their noses actually meant sniffing what looked like cocaine.‘What’s that?’ I asked with a scared voice.‘Come on now, don’t tell me you have never seen this! Coke.’ Carol exclaimed.‘Cocaine. I know what it is.’‘Then why do you ask? Come on and join us.’
Billy, the charmer
Billy was leaning against the door of his Mini Cooper, waiting for me. He smiled at me from a distance. He just looked at me and smiled from ear to ear. When I finally got to him, he hugged me tightly; more like squeezed me and gave me a baby kiss. You’d swear we already had the title of boyfriend and girlfriend. He once again told me how beautiful I looked and he smelled good as usual. He opened the passenger door for me, like a princess then he sat in his. We drove in silence, but not total silence because he was playing music. The local Kwaito music. That fascinated me. A rich boy from the suburbs playing Kwaito. I thought he was goin
When I got inside, I thought Anna would be asleep but there she was, waiting for me like a mother of a trouble-some teenager. ‘Chomee
Dating Billy AndersonThe next few weeks were very good. Billy and I were officially in a relationship. He took me everywhere. To the movies, the park, shopping. He actually gave me an allowance, fetched me and dropped me wherever, whenever. He even took me to a beauty salo
Shopping was bliss because we got along (thanks to Billy’s credit card) and we got exactly what we wanted. I was buying a lot of swimsuits with different colours, forgetting that they would sell me out to Anna, especially because I didn’t want her to know about my excursion to Durban. Anna was two years older than me, so she felt a great deal of responsibility for me. She often told me that I am now her little sister, the sister that she never had. She had this paranoia about Billy sleeping with me and then leaving me. Hence that’s why I didn’t want her to know about our plans.‘Petunia, what exactly are we shopping for?’ Anna asked without looking at me.‘We are shopping for the fun of it. Isn’t that what girls d
Durban, what a paradise
One would argue that killing three people was a breeze to me, they might be right because I did kill them. But killing myself wasn’t easy, the physical pain that I so desperately wanted didn’t sound like a great idea if I was doing it myself. I thought that, perhaps I should go to Park Station and throw myself in front of a moving train, but I didn’t have the guts. But in my quest to punish Billy, I thought about his words. The fact that he didn’t want to lose me. Yeah, he said some pretty hectic stuff before he left, he was angry. He told me that he loved me, and I believed him, he had no reason to lie.
He spoke to God-knows-who and then told them that he will send them GPS coordinates. That just raised a lot of questions in my mind. I was wondering why didn’t Billy ask whoever his goons were to kill Naledi in the first place. If they can dispose of a body, sure they can kill. Or might even have killed before. I was wondering why he had to make me do it for him. We sat in silence for almost an hour. Billy didn’t want to look at me, when he did, he either said something hurting or asked me to feel the body’s temperature, which was already cold. I covered her with a blanket because I couldn’t bear to look at her body like that.
In my twisted head, I believed that going away from my family and my life as I knew it was a small price to pay. Finally, I was getting the man of my dreams, a good life and I knew that both Billy and I were not perfect. I even thought of us as Bonnie and Clyde. We were not bank robbers, we were killers but I was hoping we won’t kill again. The consequences were not as thrilling as our relationship was. I began to pack my things soon after Billy left because he said I had to leave as soon as possible. For the first time in days, I felt good. I don
‘Chomee
I raced back to the kitchen and looked for a dry dish towel. I found it in one of the drawers and with it, I wiped everything that I touched. I wiped everything, the counter top, the door knob as well as the key, the taps and the tub. Everything that had my prints, I wiped thoroughly. Except for Naledi and Sharon. I didn’t try wiping them because it was pointless. No matter how hard I would’ve have tried, it wouldn’t remove the fact that I killed two innocent people. They were only guilty because they were beautiful and they had everything I didn’t. Also because Sharon disliked me and Naledi was a threat to my happiness
I steadily sat on the bar stool and my eyes wandered around the kitchen. It was small but not as small as ours. The cupboards were made of rich brown wood with stainless steel handles. It was lavished in a way, most of the appliances that they had, Anna and I could only dream of. There was a big black double door fridge standing at the corner, which looked like the one Billy had in his cottage. The microwave and the kettle were similar to Billy’s as well. That made me wonder whether Billy and Naledi bought them together out of love or Naledi was living up to her reputation and extorted money out of Billy to furnish their kitchen and poss
Without any hesitation, I gave him the go-ahead. I wanted him to live his life without having to look behind his back. A life without Naledi’s obnoxious threats. Yes I never got time to study the girl, but what Billy had poured out to me was more than enough for me to dislike her even further. The drive to town was a very quiet one, but the loud beating of my heart was audible. Even with the encouraging rage, there was a lot of room for fear. I was about to end somebody’s life, I had to be frightened.
For the next couple of days, Billy coached me on what I needed to. He even took me to a shooting range, explaining to me how to use a gun and how to break and enter without being seen. It was scary at first, but we had fun playing the bad guys. Billy tried his utmost to make me feel comfortable. He was way too smart as well because every time he came over, he will always show me a threatening text from his sugar momma or play an audio of the things she would say about me. All of that made me angry and fired up to pursue with the plan. There were however, times when I wanted out of the situation, but Billy always outsmarted me. He’d alway
The night seemed to be longer than normal but eventually, dawn broke and the new day greeted us with warm winter rays. I was still overwhelmed by everything that Billy poured out on to me the night before and it was too evident. Billy suggested that we both needed to loosen up and he picked Sandton as the therapeutic destination. I welcomed the idea wholeheartedly as I knew that he wasn’t going back to the lecturer. Spending time together increased my chances and the fact that he finally confided in me made the relationship a real one. For a few hours, I wasn’t at all concerned about Billy’s troubles; I was too busy enjoying
