The next time I awakened to fire rapid Spanish being spoken in the hallway. It took me a moment to realize that I wasn’t tied up. My next thought was that it was a man and woman arguing, was one of the voices Marco? I had hopes that he wasn't as cruel as the first man had been. I wished to God I had paid attention during Spanish class at school because I had no idea what they were talking about.
I did catch her name, however. Because he yelled it at her like someone who knew you would. The roll of the g sound followed by an emphasis on the a. Who in the hell was Gina? Really, who was Marco for that matter. And why did they want me?
After that bath from the night before, I had climbed into bed in my wrinkled blouse and panties. Marco raised a brow at my unusual outfit, but thankfully didn’t say anything. I was so exhausted, and I knew that he wouldn’t tell me what the fuck was going on.
I slid from the bed and yanked on my skirt. If it looked bad yesterday, it was nothing compared to the train wreck that I was today. Slipping into the bathroom, I tried to freshen up. I found a comb in one of the drawers and washed it with the hand soap and hot water. I wanted to think that it would sanitize anything that might still be living there.
Thankfully there was a new toothbrush under the sink and I grabbed it as well as the toothpaste. My hair was a tangled mess from sleeping on it wet. The bruise on my face from Jamie had turned a deep purplish black. Cocking my head to the side, I assessed the damage. It was nothing that wouldn’t heal, but it sure looked bad.
I wrapped my reddish-brown hair up into a bun and secured it with the bobby pins I had taken out before my bath the night before. I looked like shit, no doubt about it, but this was as presentable as I was going to get in the current circumstances.
I heard the outside door open and a woman’s voice called out to me. “Shay? Where are you?”
“In the bathroom,” I called out and hurriedly cleaned up my mess.
When I opened the door, I was faced with the meanest looking girl I had ever seen. Her features were beautiful, high cheekbones, full lips, and dark curly hair. She had great boobs and a curvy figure that most women would die for. But her expression and cut arms gave me pause; this girl didn’t mess around.
“So, I am to be your babysitter for the time being. My name is Gina.”
I walked a little further into the room. “Can you tell me why they have me here?”
Gina laughed. “Can I? Yes. Will I? No.”
My heart sank, and I felt that urge to use, to escape. Trying to shove that down, I tightened my fists. “What do they want with me? I don’t have any money, I’m a fucking waitress.”
The gleam in her eyes was cold. “What part of no aren’t you understanding? I won’t give you any information.”
I sighed and sank down onto the bed. “Can you at least tell me where Marco and Jamie went?”
I was hoping that Jamie was far away from where we were. He was a mean bastard and I didn’t need any more enemies at the moment.
“Marco is downstairs, and Jamie, well, he won’t be bothering you again,” she snorted. “He won’t be bothering anyone ever again.”
I felt the color draining from my face.” What-what do you mean?”
“The boss doesn’t like to be crossed. I can see Jamie’s handy work on your face. He was a liability that was dealt with.”
Dead.
Jamie was dead.
“Are you going to throw up? Because if you are I would prefer you use the toilet.”
I glanced back up at Gina’s amused gaze. How could she find anything about this remotely funny?
“Who killed him?”
She raised a carefully manicured brow. “I never said anybody killed him.”
No. Because that would mean that she had given me information which she clearly had stated multiple times that she won’t do.
“Is Will the boss?”
Gina wrinkled her nose. “I don’t know any Will.”
This surprised me. “He was here yesterday with Marco. A tall man with black hair...?”
Gina eyed me with a new-found interest. “That sounds like the boss, but I have never heard his first name. Jennings is sexy as fuck, muscles upon muscles, and mean as hell. If that is who you are talking about...?”
Sexy as fuck—it’s funny because I would never have considered calling the Will I knew back in Tennessee anything close to this. But the man who had caressed my face last night, yeah, he was something else. I wondered what had happened to him in all the years that I hadn’t seen him.
I certainly didn’t turn out to be any prize. A former addict, cheater, thief, whore—these words could all be used to describe who I had become.
And yet the thought that Will Jennings was a murderer? That didn’t sit well with me.
“Yeah,” I said shortly. “The same guy.”
She looked surprised. “Well, Cupcake, you just became a fuck load more interesting to me. Tell me how you know the boss.”
It was my turn to raise a brow. “No information from you? No information from me.”
Her lips pursed. “Touché. I can tell you that your face is plastered all over the news. Someone named Stacy had a press conference this morning stating your disappearance.”
She opened one of the drawers of the dresser and found the remote. A smartly dressed reporter was speaking on the television.
“The FBI has joined police in Riverdale, NY, in the search for a 28-year-old woman who hasn't been seen since Saturday afternoon. Police say Shay Montgomery was last seen by a waitress at the Cricket Café around 1 pm before she exited the building, ABD 48 reports.
The woman was reported missing at 6:15 pm Sunday evening by a friend. The officers are now searching a wider area after scouring their home, neighborhood, and workplace.
Authorities say Shay has reddish-brown hair, green eyes, and weighs about one hundred and fifteen pounds, ABD News reports. She was last seen in a gray suit jacket and skirt in the company of business mogul Elliot Brand and his wife.
“A family friend tells ABD News that Shay was in the midst of completing the twelve-step program, having recently recovered from methadone addiction. She fears for Shay’s welfare and has concerns that there may be foul play involving the business tycoon.
Brand has released a statement that he and his wife had nothing to do with the disappearance and that they pray along with Montgomery’s family for a swift recovery. FBI agents are looking into the matter. If you have any information about Shay Montgomery or her whereabouts, please contact the police. Numbers will be provided on the screen.”
“Turn it off,” I croaked.
The images of Elliot and Mandy were plastered all over the television. They had more shots of them than they did of me. I felt sick inside and knew that Mandy would never forgive me now. How could things have gone so wrong?
I was trying to do the right thing and, in the process, fucked everything up.
My demons were insistent. You are worthless. You are nothing. This is all your fault. You shouldn’t be allowed to live. You fuck up everything.
I hadn’t noticed that Gina had approached me and jumped when her hand touched my shoulder.
“Are you okay?”
Her concern touched me, and I looked up at her and answered as honestly as I knew how.
“No.”
CHAPTER 4 – WillThe fucking punk ass Jamie was tied up and left in a warehouse until I could get to him. I knew that if I went in hot I would kill the bastard before I got any information out of him. And I needed to know who had it out for Shay. When Jamie came to work for me a few months ago I tolerated his idiocy because good marksmen were tough to come by and he was one of the best. I’m what you would call an assassin, butcher, hired gun, hitman, killer. It really doesn’t matter what you name it, I ki
CHAPTER 5 – ShayHigh School - Several years earlier.“Hey Babe.” Tyler wrapped his meaty arm around me stuck his nose in my hair.I literally felt my skin crawl as my back smacked against the school lockers. Why wouldn’t this douchebag go away?I shoved against his muscled chest. “Leave me alone, Tyler. We aren’t going out any
CHAPTER 6 – ShayI was sent the job to kill you.Kill you.Kill you.The words kept racing around my brain. Who would want to kill me? And since when did Will become a gun for hire? I was nobody—
CHAPTER 7 - ShayI went on to tell him about the falling out I had with Mandy. I didn’t sugar coat it. I told him all of the terrible things that I did to her and the horrible way I treated her. I told him about Emma and Andrew and hated the disappointed look on his face. But I knew that I had to keep going. I told him about my 12-step program for drug abuse.Hell yes, I was embarrassed. I didn't want him to know just how far I had fallen. Yet I had to, because things were too much for me to handle on my own.
CHAPTER 8 – Shay“Girl, you have to tell me,wereyou two a thing in high school or something?” Gina propped her hands underneath her chin and settled in.It was getting late, and we were back in my room again. Gina was making herself comfortable and I knew that she wouldn’t be going anywhere until she got some answers. I suppose that she felt entitled because Will had sent her out to pick me up some things.
CHAPTER 9 – Gina POVWhen Shay hadn’t awakened an hour later I went over and touched her forehead. She’s burning up. My first inclination had been that she was pregnant. Heaven knows that I sure struggled with smells in the first trimester. Now, I am not sure at all. Maybe I was projecting something on Shay that wasn’t true, and she is actually sick. I touch her head again and am surprised at how hot she feels. Shay is deathly white, huddled up under the blankets, and she looks miserable.
CHAPTER 10 – Marco POVI didn’t even know where I was going or why I was so pissed. It wasn’t like we were exclusive. I mean, I was, but I’m well aware of what I look like. I have a large birthmark on my face. For as long as I can remember, people have been telling me how ugly it is—I am.When we were kids I thought I had a chance with Gina. Stupid, I know, but I was young and thought that maybe she saw the real me. And then one day I was waiting outside of the locker room and I heard her talk
CHAPTER 11 – ShaySTEP 9: Whenever possible, make direct restitution to all persons you have harmed.“No, absolutely not,” Will’s jaw clenched, and his eyes flared, “You are not to contact those people, Shay. For all, we know they are behind the hit that’s been put out on you.”I couldn’t help
Bonus Chapter 2 - Julio & Natalia“I’ve seen more cows than people in this town,” Jackson complained as they drove into the small town of Otterville Falls. “Why are we here, again?”“Because according to Jennings, Natalia is here. Why? I don’t really know. Fro
BONUS MATERIAL -How Julio got his groove back...
CHAPTER 24 – ShayAt the computer putting the finishing touches on a manuscript...A lot has happened since our stay at the Villa. As I began to recuperate Will was busy selling his mansion and finding us a new forever home. It was obvious that going back to the United States wouldn’t be in his best interest. Will wasn’t precisely on the Feds list, but they weren’t exchanging Christmas cards either.
CHAPTER 23 – WillI hated being away from Shay at the Villa, but the truth was that if we were ever to have a future together I was going to need to get out of the family business. Julio understood where I was coming from and promised to take good care of her while I went about tying up loose ends.In between all of this, the threat of Redmont was still weighing on us. I knew that he would be coming after her. That crazy son of a bitch just didn’t know when to stop. Most people would have thrown in the towel long ago, so I knew there had to be more involved.
CHAPTER 22 – ShayWe fell into a certain pattern at the Villa, I was able to spend time with Mandy and her daughter and slowly she began to thaw towards me. It was never the close relationship that we had once shared, but I could tell that she didn’t hate me and that meant the world to me.Will was often gone in the daytime and then when he returned we would make passionate love all night. I loved him more than the air I breathed. I would often tell him so and every time he didn’t return the statement a little bit of me died inside.
CHAPTER 21 – Shay“For heaven’s sake would you please just sit down?” Gina scowled at me. “I am supposed to be mad at you and I can’t even do that properly with you freaking out.”“You don’t understand,” I was wringing my hands, wearing out a hole in the carpet. “She hates me, Gina, they both hate my guts and now because of me they are forced to come here.”Gina raised a brow, “Unless you are God and can control what that bitch Emma does, it is no
CHAPTER 20 – Will“I need to speak with Elliot Brand.”There was a pause on the other end of the line before the secretary inquired, “And may I ask to which this is concerning?”I sighed, not having time for this shit. “The safety of his wife and child; this is Will Jennings. He will take the call.”The woman put me on hold and I groun
CHAPTER 19 – Shay“Are you sure they are coming?” Julio whispered as we hid behind the tapestries just outside of the library.I snorted, albeit very softly. “They won’t ignore my cry for help and I texted both of them that I had fallen.”Sure enough, there was the sound of pounding feet coming their way. Julio placed a finger to his lips and I nodded. It was doubtful that they would see us here simply because their focus would be on getting inside the library.
CHAPTER 18 – ShayIt wasn’t that I was expecting him to say it back to me. I mean, that would have been bloody brilliant and not nearly as uncomfortable as the complete silence that accompanied my declaration.I almost wanted to take it back, not that I didn’t love him, because I did. I was head over heels, tits over ass in love with Will Jennings. But maybe just minutes after sex with his cock still softening inside of me wasn’t the best time to tell him.I closed my eyes as the silence stretched, n
