Chapter 31

Author: Maureen Green
"This was the kid you schemed so hard to get. You were the one who couldn't deliver a healthy baby, so why are you blaming me?"

Colin turned his face away without a trace of warmth. In fact, there was even a mocking glint in his eyes when he looked at Aspen.

"Surely you haven't forgotten how you shamelessly crawled into my bed back then, or how you plotted to give birth to a child. Since you liked children so much, fine. I'm willing to give you another one."

He then stepped forward, tilted Aspen's chin, and kissed her.

It was revolting—unbearably revolting. Aspen had never imagined she would feel such disgust. She mustered all her strength and shoved Colin away.

"We're already divorced, Colin Fuller. Could you please have some dignity?"

Colin had never expected his attempt at a kiss would be rejected. Anger flashed in his eyes.

"Aspen, we never got a divorce certificate. We're still husband and wife, so why are you acting so coy?"

He was just giving her what she wanted. Why was

It was a threat—a blatant, undisguised threat.Aspen knew Colin was ruthless. If he said something, he meant it. She rushed out of the room without hesitation, stepping in front of Aren to shield him. "You're not allowed to touch him!""You're giving me orders? Aspen, do you even think you have the right?"Colin raised an eyebrow and let out a cold scoff. He had to admit, watching Aspen defend another man right in front of him made his anger surge uncontrollably."Colin, whatever happens between us, don't drag anyone else into it!""At least you know it's between us." Colin sneered. His gaze was as sharp as a blade as it swept over the two of them. He then shoved Aren aside and strode off without another word.Aspen's heart pounded with fear. She immediately turned back to Aren. "I'm so sorry. This is my fault. I dragged you into this. But don't worry, I'll make sure—""I'm not afraid of him." Aren cut her off firmly. He had studied abroad and had recently returned to start his

"I'm fine!" Aspen grew anxious. It was just a minor bone fracture—what was the point of resting any longer? But Aren completely ignored her protests. Without a word, he lifted her into his arms and gently placed her back on the bed."Rest and recover properly." His tone was firm, yet there was a gentleness in it, just like years ago. And yet, it didn't feel exactly the same.Aspen couldn't explain why, but despite being apart for years, there wasn't even a hint of awkwardness between them. Their tacit understanding remained, and there was an unspoken connection that felt effortlessly natural."Get some rest first. I'll go get you something to eat." Aren smiled, then turned and walked out of the room.A sense of warmth spread through Aspen's heart as she watched his retreating figure, slowly filling the cracks that had long existed there. At that moment, the door swung open, and Zac stepped inside. He stood before Aspen, his face twisted with unconcealed disgust."Aspen, I've tru

Aren stood at the doorway with his fists clenched tightly. His face was dark with fury as he watched Aspen in her moment of helplessness and despair.Years ago, he had made a split-second decision, one that had led him to leave. He had never imagined that the moment he walked away, the woman he loved would suffer such humiliation and hardship. If he had known what would happen to her, he would never have left. He would have found a way to carve out his own path right here, in this country. But regrets meant nothing. There were no second chances in life.At that thought, his expression shifted again. He picked up his phone and personally arranged everything with the funeral home, ensuring every detail of Sophie's farewell was handled perfectly. After being discharged from the hospital, Aspen went straight to the funeral home. She wanted to give Sophie a proper send-off. But she was stunned when she stepped inside and saw the room filled with plush toys. She stared at Aren in disbe

Aren had never expected that a simple trip abroad for further studies would cause him to miss so much.Back then, he had drowned himself in alcohol and despair for quite some time when he had heard that Aspen had gotten married and even given birth to a child. He had thought it was just a one-sided infatuation on his part. But after listening to her side, he felt like there was more to the story than he had originally believed."Enough for now. You're exhausted. Go home and rest for a few days. Once you've recovered, come and find me. I'll personally take you to the company to start your new job." He gently patted her head, and his voice was as soft as ever.Looking at Aren, Aspen felt something flicker to life inside her—a tiny spark of hope. But just as quickly as it appeared, she smothered it. She had no right to entertain such thoughts. All she could do was smile at Aren before turning around and heading back into her small, worn-down apartment. She smiled faintly to herself

Gwyneth's face twisted with rage as she grabbed Aspen's wrist and forced her backward."What right do you have to compete with me? You're nothing!" she hissed. "Colin and I are meant to be together. You're just a filthy whore who climbed into his bed. Even your daughter was just as worthless as you!"Aspen had endured enough. She used all her strength and slapped Gwyneth across the face—hard. She yanked her by the hair and shoved her head down without hesitation, forcing her to kneel before Sophie's photograph."Aspen Nicholls, how dare you hit me? Let go of me!" Gwyneth shrieked while struggling desperately. But she would never understand—when a mother was pushed beyond her limits, there was no telling what she was capable of.Aspen held onto Gwyneth's hair with an iron grip. She kicked her hard in the knee, making her buckle, then pressed her other hand firmly against the back of her neck to force Gwyneth's head down with brutal strength.Gwyneth could say whatever she wanted,

Gwyneth wrapped her arms around Colin's neck and whispered softly, "I'm only doing this for you. What if she tries to play tricks and refuses to finalize the divorce? Colin, we went through so much to get here. I can't bear to see you struggle."As she spoke, tears welled up again. "I know… I know I'm not in the right, but I don't have a choice. I don't want to leave you. I can't leave you."Her sobs grew more intense, and her body suddenly trembled and stiffened.Colin's chest tightened. He knew all too well what this meant—it was a physical symptom of her depression.Panic surged through him. He quickened his pace without hesitation, rushing her to the hospital as fast as possible. He then immediately arranged for the best specialist to see her."Mr. Fuller, Ms. Sanders' emotional state has been highly unstable. I'm afraid her depression is relapsing. She's already showing physical symptoms. If this continues, she may revert to her previous condition. Mr. Fuller, you need to fin

Aspen let out a cold laugh. She had never cared about these things when they had been husband and wife. But now that they were parting ways, she would make sure every cent was accounted for.Colin looked at her in surprise. The woman standing before him felt completely unfamiliar. She used to obey him without question. Why did it feel like she had become an entirely different person? He grabbed the document she had thrown at him and scanned it quickly. His expression darkened."This is impossible! Aspen, you really have no shame when it comes to money. You actually dared to forge legal documents?"Colin stood up, stepping in close to Aspen as his hand reached out to clamp around her throat. The hostility radiating from him was suffocating, but Aspen only found it laughable."Surely you know better than I do what level Fuller Group's legal team operates at. If you think this document is fake, go ahead and ask them. "We were once married, and I won't take a penny more than what I'

Gwyneth had once thought that marrying Colin would guarantee her a life of ease and security. Never in her wildest dreams had she expected something like this to come out of nowhere. This…Panic surged through Gwyneth. If she had known that Fuller Group wasn't in Colin's hands, she would have been better off seducing Aspen instead! And now? After all her scheming, all she had managed to get was an empty shell?Colin raised an eyebrow and looked at Gwyneth. "Gwen, how are you feeling now?" His voice was gentle, but there was a trace of scrutiny in his eyes.Despite the chaos in her mind, Gwyneth quickly collected herself and slipped seamlessly into her role. She cast Colin a pitiful glance before saying in a soft and fragile voice, "Colin, I'm fine… Please don't argue with Ms. Nicholls anymore. She… She always follows through on her words. I don't want you to lose too much because of me."The moment she said this, Colin's expression softened. Looking at the delicate, considerate

As soon as Gwyneth stepped out of the car, she leaned heavily into Colin, making sure everyone could see how close they were. Colin wrapped his arm around her waist, guiding her toward the entrance. There, they ran into Aspen, who was just about to step inside. When he met Aspen's knowing, half-smiling gaze, he felt a sharp pang of discomfort, as if his hand holding Gwyneth's suddenly burned."Ms. Nicholls, please don't be mad. I've never been to an event like this before, so I begged Colin to bring me," Gwyneth said, her voice trembling. "I was so bored in the hospital, and I just wanted to get out for a bit. I-I didn't know you'd be here." Tears welled up in her eyes as she spoke. In the past, Aspen would have made a scene, but now she simply smiled faintly and replied, "Ms. Sanders, you've had a tough time recovering in the hospital. Since you're here, make sure to enjoy yourself. Colin, take good care of her. If she sees anything she likes, make sure to buy it for her." H

What was supposed to be an urgent matter suddenly didn't feel so urgent to Colin. Puzzled, he stood there, glancing at Aspen and wondering why she wasn't making a scene like she used to. Sensing his confusion, Aspen looked back at him with the same questioning expression before finally waving him off. "Take your time. Don't let me keep you.""Wait for me," Colin said firmly before turning and striding away. Aspen watched him go, letting out a scoff of disdain. Then, she turned to Riley, who was still standing there, and snapped, "What are you staring at? Get the car ready. We can't be late.""But Mr. Fuller told you to wait for him," Riley replied, clearly confused. When had Aspen become so decisive?Aspen gave him a look that was both amused and exasperated. "You've worked for him for years, and you still don't know him? Do you really think he's coming back?" It wasn't like this had never happened before. The only difference was that back then, the empty promises had been mad

Facing the cameras, Aspen carried herself with confidence and grace, showing no sign of embarrassment despite the personal nature of the questions. It was as if none of this had anything to do with her. Colin had always wanted to see this composed and professional side of her. Yet, when he met her cold, emotionless gaze, he couldn't help but feel a growing sense of irritation. He had hated how she focused all her attention on him in the past, but now that she seemed completely indifferent, he found it even harder to accept. "Mrs. Fuller, what exactly is the relationship between Ms. Sanders and Mr. Fuller?" a reporter asked."Ms. Sanders is just Ms. Sanders, and I am Mrs. Fuller. Colin is right here beside me—isn't that answer enough?" Aspen replied with a soft smile. She took Colin's hand, interlacing their fingers in front of the cameras and proudly displaying their wedding rings. In reality, Aspen's original ring had been discarded long ago, and the one she wore now was a ch

It was exactly what Aspen wanted. There was no way Gwyneth could just move on and live a peaceful life now—not after what she had done to them. She had made their lives a living hell, so it was only fair for her to finally experience what it felt like to lose sleep over it.When the reporters bombarded her with questions, Aspen handled it with grace and poise, earning plenty of praise. She took this opportunity not only to officially acknowledge her identity but also to send a clear message—she was exceptional. This was a once-in-a-lifetime chance, and she was determined to make sure the whole world knew her name—she was Aspen Nicholls, not some pathetic caged canary or Mrs. Fuller.Watching her effortlessly take control of the situation, Colin found himself seeing her in a new light. He had always assumed she was just a woman who only cared about grocery store prices, but clearly, he had underestimated her.It almost felt like Aspen was a completely different person. The old As

"Is that so? This is the same gown a top international model just wore on the runway. How is it tasteless? Some people just can't let go of outdated ideas," Aspen shot back, rolling her eyes. It was the first time she had ever pushed back against Colin's criticism. In the past, no matter how harshly he judged her, she would stay silent, even questioning herself. But now, she knew better. She hadn't done anything wrong—it was Colin who was the problem.Even Howard had praised her look, but Colin, as usual, had nothing positive to say. His lack of taste and constant negativity were exhausting.Colin hadn't expected that his single comment would spark such a sharp response. His eyebrows furrowed as he glared at her. "Aspen, is this your new strategy? Are you trying to get my attention by acting out? Pathetic.""And yet, who exactly is the one obsessed with this?? Are we going or not?" Aspen snapped, losing patience. If she hadn't spent so much time perfecting her look, she might ha

With just a light touch of makeup, Aspen's features became even more refined and striking. Howard admired his work with deep satisfaction.Stylists like him prided themselves on their skills, but the truth was that working with a naturally beautiful canvas was far more enjoyable than doing a full transformation. Enhancing beauty was far easier than creating it from scratch, and the results were always breathtaking. The best makeup wasn't the kind that looked obvious. It was the kind that made people wonder if any had been applied at all.Aspen stared at her reflection in the mirror, finding the whole situation incredibly ironic. She used to love wearing bold, eye-catching colors like this, but after marrying Colin, she had gradually abandoned her own tastes, simply because he found them tacky.Over time, she had tried to match his so-called refined aesthetic, wearing muted, outdated tones to please him. Looking at herself now, she couldn't believe how far she had strayed from who

Standing by the door, Aspen listened to Gwyneth's tortured screams from inside the room. The sound sent a rush of satisfaction through her, but even that didn't feel like enough. Colin deserved to experience this kind of suffering too. When Aspen returned to her own hospital room, she found four stylists already waiting for her. They all stood respectfully, their postures formal. The lead stylist stepped forward with a polished smile. "Mrs. Fuller, I'm Howard Lewis. I'm here to do your styling for today."Then, he gestured toward the collections behind him, adding, "These are the latest designer gowns and accessories—you're free to choose anything you like."The dresses were all high-end couture, and the jewelry was nothing short of exquisite—each piece more extravagant than the last. One glance at the collection told Aspen that today's press conference and evening gala were of great significance. Otherwise, Colin wouldn't have invested this much. At his core, he was nothing more

After Colin left, Aspen grabbed the bouquet of hyacinths from the table and threw it into the trash, feeling a wave of disgust. She wasn't done, though. If there was one thing she excelled at, it was making people just as miserable as she felt. Aspen immediately headed upstairs to Gwyneth's room. Since Aren had already arranged everyone around Gwyneth, Aspen had no trouble making her way to Gwyneth's room. She walked in, her arms crossed, and sat down in a chair, smirking at Gwyneth. "So, this is what it's like to be Colin's true love? Seems exhausting."Gwyneth's face twisted with rage the moment she saw Aspen. Her voice was filled with venom as she screamed, "You bitch! You scheming, evil bitch!"Aspen would have stayed silent in the past, enduring the insults without a word. Then again, she was no longer that Aspen anymore. She strode forward and slapped Gwyneth across the face, hissing, "Who's the real bitch here? You knew he had a wife and a child, yet you still threw yo

Hearing Aspen's words, Aren quietly withdrew his hand and gave her a gentle smile. "Alright, I'll wait for you," he said softly, his voice warm and reassuring. This was the difference between Aren and Colin. Colin only cared about himself and never considered others. However, Aren chose to respect Aspen and give her space. Watching him, Aspen felt her resolve waver, and her heart stirred with emotions she had tried to suppress. To force herself to stay rational, she said something she didn't truly mean. "Aren, you should go. I can handle the rest on my own."Aren didn't push back. He simply nodded, gently brushing her cheek with his hand before standing up and walking out. As she watched his retreating figure, Aspen hugged herself tightly, taking a deep breath. Tears silently rolled down her cheeks....The next morning, Colin arrived with another bouquet of hyacinths. His face lit up with a warm smile. "How are you feeling today?"He was so gentle, acting as though Aspen was
