They all went quiet and stared at the fire. The fire crackled and quickly consumed the wood that Casser had just placed. The embers started to glow dimmer as its surface turned into ash. Eldion asked for permission to place more firewood from Casser who nodded his approval.

"So, did you carve all these sculptures?" Eldion asked Shaan after placing wood into the fire. Eldion was looking at the wall carvings and was admiring the intricate details.

"Some of them," replied Shaan. "They were all created by my Guild. The carvings on these walls, however, and the gallery across from us where Verna found you, were by my own hand."

"They're very beautiful," said Wen, admiring the carvings on the walls.

"Thank you," said Shaan, bowing his head. "I carved these so that if time comes that we finally left this jungle, people who see them would know what really happened."

"The stories told about you had already taken different versions," said Casser.

"And mostly to suit the storyteller," added Wen.

Casser led Wen, Eldion and the animated statues out of the courtyard and thought of what possible route that would give the least risk of encountering an imperial soldier. He passed by Noha who was still tied to a tree and thought if he should bring Noha with them as they escape the ancient city. Noha looked at Casser and brayed as if to ask where he was going. She flicked her ears and lifted her foot off the ground, like she wanted to come with Casser.Casser wanted to take Noha with them and remembered the many times that the carabao had been loyal and helpful to him. He realized too that Noha would only slow them down as they escape, and they could never outrun the imperial soldiers through the jungle the same way that they outrun them in the wetlands. Casser gave Noha's head a gentle tap and with a quick swing of his knife, severed the rope that tied her to the tree."Verna and Shaan are your masters now, Noha. Serve them well," Casser said and he walked on,

Inside the temple city, Verna swept an imperial soldier to the ground with her tail. She hissed, revealing her fanged teeth and extended her arms to her sides with her hands clenched into fists. The moon shone on her body, making her iridescent scales glisten and her eyes brighten like silver stars. She pushed herself to full height, towering over the soldiers that swarmed towards her. With a strong sweep of her giant tail, she threw two imperial soldiers to the wall of the galleries as another one hit a nearby tree. Three more soldiers came with their swords drawn and tried to slash Verna using their sharp weapons, but Verna saw them coming and with a push from her tail, she was able to jump to the roof of the galleries. The soldiers hesitated for a few moments and then started climbing the walls to reach Verna. They were strong and agile and were able to scale the walls to quickly reach the roof. As they lifted their head above the roof, they saw that Verna had been waiting. She his

  • Journey Through the Shadow Realms   Chapter 52: The Day After

It was early morning and the sun had spread its golden light across the vast ruins surrounding the ancient temple city deep within the jungles of Alanca. Kora was the first to wake up and started to cluck noisily as she watched her surroundings slowly getting brighter. She rose from where she lay against a moss-covered wall and flapped her wings before finding a wet spot on the ground. There, she started to scratch and peck at the soil for worms and snails.Lankko woke up when he heard Kora clucking and noticed the brightness in his bedroom. He opened his eyes and saw the tall trees towering over the moss-covered walls of the shelter where they took refuge the previous night. He blinked several times to make sure that he was not dreaming, wishing that he was still inside his bedroom at the fortress. When his surroundings did not change, he was saddened with the memory of his family staying behind in Alnoc. Still, he had to accept the fact that it would probably be a long time before he

The two men were silent after breakfast as they thought about what had happened and what they would do next. Enzir knew that his plan had failed. He had wanted to bring the jade statue back to Alnoc and possibly bargain with Jal Dalik, but failed. He also wanted to retrieve the pearl from the thief who took it, but again failed as they were not able to track the dancer. Now, they had also lost the means to track her since Enzir had drunk all the remaining magic elixir to subdue the snake creature. Enzir was once again at a loss on what they would do next. The worst part was that he was defeated by a living statue, and he was made to kneel before someone of lower status."What do we do now, Jad Enzir?" asked Lankko, much to Enzir's annoyance."I don't know!" replied Enzir in a loud voice. "We lost our chance to return to Alnoc when we lost that jade statue and that dancer who took the pearl. Now, it looks like we'll have to live in this jungle while relying on fruits an

Ten more men jumped out of the trapdoors that opened from the ground, sending dried leaves fluttering to the air. The trapdoors were concealed under the plentiful dried leaves that covered the jungle floor and remained undetected by Enzir and Lankko until it was too late. The men from the trapdoors had drawn their weapons and surrounded Enzir and Lankko. It all happened so quickly that even before the dried leaves that flew to the air landed on the ground, the men were already in position and pointing spears and arrows towards the two men from Alnoc.Enzir was taken by surprise at the sudden appearance of the armed men before them. His mind raced on who the men were and where they came from, but his instinct was to defend himself against possible assailants. He placed a hand on the hilt of his sword and was about to draw it out, when one of the armed men stepped forward and stopped him with a threatening voice."Pull out the sword and you lose the arm," said the man threateningly at En

They walked for more than an hour and Enzir felt disoriented after being pushed towards unknown directions and tumbling several times to the ground. There were times when he was pushed forward to climb upward slopes or made to wade through shallow water. When he slowed his steps to avoid slipping, he was given a shove on the back by one of the outlaws. They made too many numerous turns and it did not take long before Enzir lost his own bearings. He knew that he would not be able to find his way back should he ever get the chance to escape. Even Lankko could not have remembered their way after the many turns that they were forced to make. Enzir guessed that the outlaws intentionally sent them through a circuitous route and probably even doubled back a few times until it was impossible to remember the way. The outlaws remained silent all through out and there was no way of recognizing who they were with. The outlaw chief may have even left them at the hands of his men as he went directly

As with the cavern they had just come from, there were lamps placed on small recesses on the walls that dimly lit the space that they were in. The cavern had been dug out recently with the pick marks still visible on the ceiling and walls as well as on the floor. Enzir reasoned that the floor at least could have been made smoother by people stepping on it had the cavern been in use for a longer time.On the walls hung a few iron tools and implements that could be found at the Alnoc dungeons along with iron chains and a cage that Enzir did not recall being used, at least during his short time as governor. There were additional recesses that were turned into shelves that also contained different tools and implements. At the center of the cavern, dimly lit by the lamps from the far walls was an apparatus that was only too familiar to Enzir and Lankko. Its form was made a bit more rudimentary and the shape of the wood simpler, but Enzir could recognize the Karbo, the new a

Mira gently unsheathed her knife and held its blade between her fingers. She felt the smoothness of the cold metal as she raised it a few inches above her shoulder while her eyes remained focused on a small spot several steps away. She drew in her breath and saw the brown and gray bark of the ancient tree. Its surface had spots of lichen and moss and the earth-colored patterns all seemed natural, but right in the middle of it, Mira could see the faint outline of a lizard. It blinked its eyes and a thin pink tongue slipped out of its mouth, but its body remained still in perfect camouflage with the back of the tree.As Mira prepared to throw the knife, she sensed something else in her peripheral vision. A slight movement, something that was not really part of the environment but trying to blend in. It was more conspicuous than the lizard that she had detected on the tree trunk, but Mira knew that it would remain hidden to the untrained eye. Mira’s eyes rolled to the left and she tried t

He seemed that he was going to faint, but he quickly dropped his hand after a moment and stared at the scene before him. The star dancer was able to sit on the floor, but she was still crying and holding on to her ankle while the other dancers crowded over her. The singer was kneeling before the dancer with his hands clasped tightly together as if praying that everything would be alright.“Do you think you can dance tomorrow?” the director asked the dancer. The dancer tried to stand up with the help of her fellow dancers, but when she tried putting some weight on her injured leg, she gasped and fell on a heap. The dancers gasped and crowded over the injured dancer.“Obviously, not!” said the director. “Quickly get her to the healer and pray that her injuries would heal soon.” Then, to himself, “Or pray that you’d dance at least half as

It was early afternoon when the three men arrived in the center of Dagos. Gent held the reins up and the horses pulling the carriage stopped by the entrance of an imposing wooden building. The door of the carriage opened and a servant garbed in the green garments of local peasants came out. He bowed low while keeping the carriage door open for his master. After a few moments, a man in bright red and purple clothes descended from the carriage.Lankko appeared regal in his red shirt and crown of glorious blonde hair. The heavy gold chains around his neck as well as the sparkling jewels on his fingers completed his attire. He played the part of a wealthy merchant quite well and walked with his chin high, barely looking at the ground. At first, he made a slight tumble upon stubbing his foot on a protruding rock, but Enzir and Gent were quick to steady him.“Thank you,” said Lankko to his servants as he recovered his elegant pose. Then, he wiggled his arms to re

There was a coded knock on the door and Lankko peeked through a hidden peep hole before removing the latch. Lankko insisted on the additional precaution, knowing that it would be very dangerous for his master as well as himself should they be discovered by the Imperial soldiers hiding in the cabin.Lankko saw that it was Gent standing at the door and he was holding several woven baskets. He appeared to be alone. Lankko opened the door to let his cousin in and immediately closed it behind him.“Are you sure no one followed you,” asked Lankko as the metal latches clicked, effectively locking the door. Then, Lankko slipped a thick wooden bar across the door.Gent nodded at Lankko. He then walked towards the kitchen where he placed the woven baskets on the table. Then, he methodically removed the contents of the baskets one-by-one, revealing them to be different food items for Lankko and Enzir. Lankko followed his cousin to the kitchen and helped h

Enzir remembered the Imperial soldiers whom they fought at Remuel’s den. Those he hit with his energy bolts collapsed to the ground and turned into dust as smoke rose to the air. He also remembered how those whom he thought to have been stunned and lay unconscious would suddenly stand up when an Imperial officer held up a glowing necklace in his hand.Enzir was filled with concern as he realized the forces that he would be up to if he joined the resistance to topple down Terdu’s regime. “What can we do then, Lankko?”“I have to admit that I don’t know, Jad Enzir. Terdu has become too powerful that I don’t even know if it is too late to resist him,” answered Lankko.“You mentioned that the people could rise against him. Why don’t they?” asked Enzir.“As I said, Jad Enzir, people are afraid. They need a leader to rally them into action like Rodan did during the time of Sukram, however&n

“If those healing stones really do work, I think it’s bad that there aren’t many of them left,” remarked Enzir.Lankko nodded. “I don’t know if you still remember, Jad Enzir, but we used to have a lot of sun stones at the fortress. You place them under the sun during the day and they will shine at night when activated, replacing the need to burn candles or oil.” Lankko’s face brightened as he remembered how it was when the use of magical artifacts was ubiquitous.“I remember that. I had a lot of those in my bedroom,” said Enzir.“When Terdu banned the practice of magic, I think we lost a lot of our simple joys and freedoms,” said Lankko, hanging his head.“Why did he ban magic in the first place, Lankko?” asked Enzir.“You really don’t know, Jad Enzir?” asked Lankko, scratching his bald head. “I thought your teachers in magic history covered

After serving breakfast and washing the dishes, Lankko decided to go to work in extracting energy from an old healing stone that he was able to get his hands on. It was an old magical artifact that he got from his cousin who also managed to get it from an old friend. According to Gent, the stone worked by rubbing it vigorously between the user’s palms and placed over the painful area. The stone would produce enough heat to warm the area it was applied on and helped in the healing process. Lankko that there was not enough energy in the healing stone to extract but still went on the laborious process of finding out how it worked and develop a method for extracting its power. After several tries, Lankko was finally able to discover that the stone drew energy from the sun and placed it outside. He then directed several mirrors towards it before dropping the stone inside a glass vessel filled with a mixture of salts and minerals. Only then did the stone start to create bubbles that

The following morning, Enzir woke up early with the sound of Kora’s nervous clucking. He looked out his window and found that the chicken was not without company. A rooster was walking around her excitedly and after flapping his wings, gave out a loud crow that could have woken even the heavy sleeper. Enzir smiled as he saw the two chickens eyeing each other and flapping their wings in some form of dance. Slowly, Enzir lowered his window to give the chickens some privacy. There was the sizzling sound of frying along with the delicious smell of garlic being fried. Enzir stretched out his arms and then got out of bed to see what Lankko was cooking. He walked to the kitchen and saw Lankko busily adding ingredients on a frying pan where there was already a steaming pile of rice.“Good morning, Jad Enzir!” said Lankko to his master after giving him a quick glance. “Did you sleep alright?”“Slept like a log,” replied Enzir. “W

Dinner with Lankko’s family was a rowdy affair, but Enzir did not mind. After all the chaos and not being able to eat at a proper table in the past few weeks, he realized that dining with other people on plentiful was really a luxury. He remembered the many times that he did not even recognize the efforts of his own cook who feisty as she was still made the most wonderful dishes that he had ever tasted. Lankko and Darla tried to control their children, especially the little ones who kept on arguing while trying to outdo each other in telling stories of their journey to Dagos. The children really do miss their father, thought Enzir. He had not really thought of Lankko’s family and failed to recognize that his Keeper of Secrets did have his personal life outside his work. Enzir did make Lankko work a lot, especially after he discovered that he could extract energy from the magic artifacts to make an elixir capable of infusing power to whoever drinks it. He had Lankko

“What are you saying, Lankko?” asked Enzir, his voice rising as he felt his blood rushing through his veins. “What do you mean my mother may still be alive?”Lankko suddenly felt warm. He felt sweat forming on his forehead and he wiped it off with his hand. He could not look at Enzir whose eyes seemed to drill into his own. “I have to apologize, Jad Enzir. Your father forbade everyone to speak to you about your mother and I had to obey his orders.”Enzir felt weak. He wanted to shout at Lankko and destroy everything he could have his hands on, but there was nothing to break, nothing to smash against the walls.“Aaahh!” cried Enzir. He finally managed to pick up a rock and threw it hard towards the lake. He felt his breathing quicken and he stood on the slope watching the rock he threw fly through the air and landing on the water.“Please, Jad Enzir,” pleaded Lankko. “Please don’t be angry wit
