CHAPTER 2: THE TURN DOWN.
—
—
—
While so many other students sat in pairs and in groups at different spots of the Lagoon Front, Idara sat all alone on the same low, stony pavement, thinking deeply.
Absently playing Anastasia's acoustic guitar with closed eyes, she thought about her childhood with Yomi. Yomi had always been a significant figure in Idara's life since she was six. He'd shaped her in so many unbelievable ways. He was like the brave Jack to her Rose, and she, in turn, was like the relentless Ann Darrow to his King Kong, but he never realized that. Sadly, the extra special love was one-sided.
Idara remembered once when she was sick and drenched in the rain, but Yomi carried her on his back regardless, all the way from their secondary school to the estate where they both used to live. She chuckled at the lovely memory.
Maybe their friendship would've blossomed into something serious if she and her father hadn't moved out of the estate when her elder brother died. Maybe she would've visited him once in a while if his family hadn't sold their house and moved out of Lagos a month after she left. Maybe they would've been more than just best friends if distance hadn't separated them for a long time. Maybe, just maybe things would've been way more different than they were right now, she wondered.
But all of that didn't matter now. All that really mattered now was that they had been reunited in school, and she was extremely glad about it.
“You are the worst guitarist I have ever seen in my life.” A familiar voice mocked behind her, laughing coolly. “No kidding.”
Idara opened her eyes and smiled without looking back. She didn't have to. His sonorous voice was more than enough to send rapid jolts of permanent bliss straight to her pure heart. “You finally made it. Took you long enough.”
Yomi huffed and sat down beside her with his right foot resting on a log of wood below. “You do know that the way you are sitting facing the lagoon is strictly prohibited, right?”
“Yeah. I know. I just don't care.”
Yomi smirked. “Always the stubborn one. I shouldn't be surprised,” he shook his head slowly. “Where's Asia, by the way?”
Idara finally looked at the gorgeous face of the fine gentleman sitting beside her, gracing the old pavement with his very presence. “She left some minutes ago. Her brother called. Said it was urgent. It has to do with the apartment issue that I told you about last week. I just hope she likes it, though, because if she does, she'll definitely rent it, and then I get to move in with her straight up.”
“Lucky you, I guess.” Yomi stifled a chuckle. “But what makes you think she needs company, though?”
“She said it herself.” Idara's eyes were now glued to the fancy nylons in Yomi's hands. “She told me not to worry about the rent since her wealthy uncle already has it covered. All she needs is someone to vibe with in the house, and a trustworthy person at that. Which, in this case, happens to be me, baby. So, yeah. Lucky me indeed.”
Yomi couldn't help but smile as he handed the nylons to Idara. “Well, good for you and bad for her, then,” he said. “Now you have all this to yourself.” He then took the guitar off her thighs and watched as she rummaged in the nylons like her life depended on it.
“Small chops. Potato chips. Sausage rolls. Fresh coconut bread. Chocolate biscuits. Soft drinks. Raw eggs, raw rice and abundant ingredients. Sweet Jesus!” Idara's eyes widened. “All these for us?”
“Pretty much.”
“Wow. Don't you think it's too much?” Idara's mouth was literally agape. “At least we could share some of 'em with you.”
“Nah. Don't bother. I'm not hungry.” Yomi declined with a wave of his hand. “Y'all should enjoy yourselves.”
Idara didn't know what exactly to say to that. “Thanks, Yomee,” she figured that would be the most appropriate thing to tell him.
“Anytime, dear.”
With that, a moment of silence ensued between both parties. All of a sudden, Idara started tapping on Yomi's shoulder frantically.
“See! Look at those crabs right there,” she broke the silence, munching on a spicy potato chip. “Aren't they adorable?”
Yomi couldn't hide his amusement when he saw them. “Wow. This life is so unfair. Even ordinary crabs have partners, and I'm still single.”
Idara almost choked on her snack because of intense laughter. “So am I.” She swallowed hard, calming down. “But I think our cases are way different sha. I can't even compare myself to you because you fine pass me wella, and guys hardly approach me because of my looks and whatnot. They always complain that I'm too tall or that my mature face, or my body or my sound intellect intimidates them back to back. But in your own case, you are, like, the golden star of our department. All the girls are just rushing you because sey you fresh and your papa get plenty money, yet you are still claiming single. Honestly, it baffles me big time. I no go lie.”
Yomi sighed. “I haven't found someone I really like yet, that's why.”
Idara rolled her eyes comically. “You know, sometimes I think you are just gay.”
“What the-” Yomi laughed out loud. “Hell fricking no! I'm too straight to be gay.”
Unknown to them, a slender guy who sat just a little bit far from them was eavesdropping on their conversation.
“I highly doubt that.” Idara opened one of the soft drinks and took a small gulp directly from the plastic bottle. “Admit it, Yomee. You're gay. I won't judge you.”
“Neither will I,” the slender guy chipped in from his side. “It's all cool. I'm actually gay, too.”
Instantly, Idara and Yomi turned their heads in his direction, both beyond surprised.
“No offense, bro, but count me out. I'm the most solid brother you'll probably ever find on Earth. And I like women a lot.” Yomi explained politely. “But don't get me wrong. Being straight doesn't mean that I detest or spite your kind. I hold absolutely nothing against y'all. We are all humans, after all. In the end, it all boils down to choice or preference. Plus, I'm all in for pure equality. This life is not too hard. We humans are just the ones who make it complicated. And it's quite sad because it shouldn't be that way at all.”
“Word!” The guy smiled, nodding in agreement. “You're very correct, bro. I gotta admit, I really like your philosophy of life, man. If we had more people like you, this world would be a better place.”
“Damn right.” Idara interjected, chewing happily. “His wisdom is just too much.”
“For real.” The guy's smile turned to a big, wide grin. “I'm Jordan, by the way.”
“Nice to meet you, Jordan.” Yomi waved his hand at him. “I'm Yomi, but the ladies call me Daddy Yo.”
“And I'm Isabelle.” Idara waved too. “Or you could just call me Idara. It's what everyone calls me.”
“I think I'll go with the former.” Jordan blinked twice. “It's a pleasure to meet you both.”
Yomi and Idara simply nodded in response, both at a loss for words.
“So are you guys, like, a couple or something?”
“What?” Yomi glanced at Idara's face and grimaced in disgust. “Hell, no. We are just friends. Best friends.”
“Since childhood.” Idara added, whacking Yomi upside the head. “And I love him so much, even though he could be a jerk sometimes.”
Yomi laughed gracefully. “Yeah. I love me, too.”
__________
Later that same day, in the evening to be precise, all four students walked together along a wide sidewalk, discussing on their way to the main gate. Anyone who knew them would've thought that they were all just strolling around campus, but in actuality, the others were only seeing Yomi off to where his car was parked outside the gate.
Anastasia had returned at midday and she'd given Idara the gist about the apartment. According to her, she loved it at first sight, and she paid for it without hesitation.
Fortunately, both ladies now had a great crib to live in. All that was left was to kiss the uncomfortable hostel bunks goodbye and move into their brand new apartment as soon as possible.
“So, about that stuff that we talked about earlier.” Anastasia whispered to Idara, gesturing at Yomi who seemed to be engrossed in a conversation with Jordan. “Have you told him yet?”
Idara shook her head. “Nope. Not yet. I'm taking things slow, waiting for the perfect time to strike. No need to rush.”
“But at least you are making progress, right?”
Idara wagged her head again. “Not really.”
Clapping her hands, Anastasia laughed mockingly. “Dara, Lord knows that I pity you big time.”
As Idara wanted to respond, Yomi tapped her hand impatiently, pointing at a group of ladies ahead.
Idara was confused. “Why are you pointing at those girls?”
“Mumu. Look at the one in the middle, wearing all black.” Yomi explained, his eyes fixated on the svelte girl in front. “She's too fine, and her outfit is beyond breathtaking.”
“So?” Idara raised an eyebrow. “What's my business with that?”
Yomi faced Idara, giving her a comical look. Then, with a silly, cheeky smile, he blinked thrice.
“I don't really like where this is going.” Idara frowned. “Please tell me it's not what I'm thinking.”
“It is exactly what you are thinking,” he said. “I want you to help me talk to her. You know how much I suck at approaching girls.”
Idara's eyes widened in disbelief. “Over my dead body! I can't do that!”
Anastasia and Jordan were already laughing, clearly enjoying the live drama in their presence.
“Isabelle, please. You know I'm too shy.” Yomi stared into her eyes, letting her know how serious he was about it. Idara knew that he rarely called her Isabelle unless he had wronged her or needed something badly. “Besides, my birthday is in three days time, and you know I've never asked you for anything like this before. Have I?”
Idara rolled her eyes. “No.”
“You see!” Yomi winked coolly. “So, in essence, this is the least you can do to make me happy. Consider it an early birthday present.”
Idara felt somewhat hurt by those words. She'd been seriously crushing on this guy for a long time, and here he was eyeing some random chick in a fancy outfit.
Quickly, she looked away to hide the pain. “It's okay. I've heard you.”
Even though every fiber of her being stood against the idea, Idara figured doing so would make Yomi happier, so she swallowed her pride and went ahead to meet the girls.
Somehow, she managed to squeeze into the group and gained their attention.
“Hi.” She faked a smile, waving her hand. “A pleasant evening to everyone.”
Only a few of them greeted her back. The others were confused and upset, but Idara didn't care. Their anger only motivated her to proceed with her mission.
So Idara simply toughened up with a confident grin on her face, as she said, “Sorry to interrupt. My name is Idara,” she touched her chest for emphasis, looking at the fairsome albino lady walking beside her. “Can I speak with you alone for a minute?”
“No!” The lady answered rudely. “These are my good friends. We're all like sisters. Whatever you have to tell me might as well be said right now in everyone's presence.”
“All right.” Idara nodded, even though she was quite offended. “I hope you don't mind; someone wants to speak with you.”
“Who is that?”
“A friend of mine. A guy.”
“So why couldn't he come by himself?”
“'Cause he's quite shy.”
“So he sent you to me?”
“Well, kinda. It's complicated.”
The lady grimaced and hissed. “So where is he?”
“Right behind us.” Idara balled her hands into fists, trying to stay calm. “The average, fair guy in red.”
Looking over her shoulder, the lady's eyes almost popped out of their sockets at the mere sight of Yomi. “Wait o, is it that small boy over there that is just fine for nothing without a beard? The one in a worn out polo, old-fashioned shorts and cheap slippers?”
On hearing that, Idara's eyes widened like never before, and with her mouth agape, she found it so hard to believe the next thing she heard.
“Sorry, fam. He's not my type. Tell him to go and find his level. Goodnight.”
#JUST_BEST_FRIENDSAuthor: Sam FreddyCHAPTER 3: HOPE.———The next day was beyond hectic for Yomi, because he had to assist his friends in moving their belongings to their new apartment with his car. Tayo, Anastasia's brother, wasn't left out of the hustle either. Yomi and Tayo collectively helped in setting up the one-bedroom apartment to the ladies' satisfaction. Together, everyone cleaned and furnished the crib on Sunday. At the end of that day, all that was left was to attach an overhead fan to the ceiling and paint the walls of the room to another preferable colour. On Monday, after lectures, Yomi drove Anastasia and Idara to a well-known supermarket to get the necessary items. While both ladies did the shopping, Yomi waited in his car, listening to music to kill time. He was about to change the radio station when someone knocked on h
#JUST_BEST_FRIENDSAuthor: Sam FreddyCHAPTER 4: SWEET CANDY.———In all honesty, Yomi's birthday party was a blast. It was a low-key event, as planned, and it was strictly by invitation. There were a lot of important factors that spiced up the celebration, such as lots of beautiful ladies, surplus drinks and snacks, a big, fine cake, and very fun games, to mention but a few.A total of twenty-five people were present at the ceremony — including the celebrant himself — and it lasted for one hour at Unilag's Love Garden. Then, when it was over, so many people left, while a few others stayed behind to have some more fun.Presently, the time was 9:13 PM, and Yomi was with Jordan, Steve, Jonathan, Candice, Alice, Betty, and Isioma. Steve and Jonathan were both Yomi's good friends and course mates, wh
#JUST_BEST_FRIENDS Author: Sam Freddy CHAPTER 5: TRUTH OR DARE. — — — When she returned from the distant store with Tayo and Anastasia, Idara was beyond surprised to meet the others sitting on some iron benches in the Lagoon Front, playing a nasty game of Truth or Dare. Somehow, they all happened to be the only ones relaxing there tonight, but Idara wasn't sure, so she looked around and figured out that — for what seemed to be the first time in history — there were no other students or security guards in the area but just the group, all by themselves. It was complete freedom like never before. Luckily for them, the illumination from the bright streetlights didn't really cover the small area where they occupied, which technically meant that there were less chances of them getting caught if the game got nastier with time.
#JUST_BEST_FRIENDSAuthor: Sam FreddyCHAPTER 6: THE PROMISE.———Tayo had always had a soft spot for Idara ever since they met in school. Right from the very first day his sister introduced him to her, he knew she was so different from the other regular girls he'd seen in the Faculty of Social Sciences. To him, Idara was one of a kind: beautiful, rare, smart, lively, meek, simple and sweet. And he'd often tried to express his feelings for her through special gifts and lengthy phone calls, but sadly, she never read between the lines. The closest to a green light that Tayo had ever gotten from Idara were the usual friendly smiles and the funny pet names. Sometimes, he wondered if his age was what scared her away from him. He was just twenty-eight years old, and she was twenty-five. There wasn't too much gap between them, after all.&n
#JUST_BEST_FRIENDSAuthor: Sam FreddyCHAPTER 7: LISTEN TO THE RADIO.———Dressed in a knee-length sky blue gown, Idara danced outside in the very light rain, whirling and twirling with exceptional vigour and profound agility. She saw herself performing on stage in front of a relatively large audience, competing against other skilled dancers like herself. So far so good, she'd beaten many of her fellow competitors out of the big tournament and had gotten to the final round without breaking a sweat. But when her last opponent came out from behind the curtains, Idara was stunned as she saw that it was none other than Yomi, her very own incomparable sunflower, charging at her with an expressionless look on his face. The moment he stood before her, the location changed from a wide, noisy hall to a quiet, spacious, adorned g
#JUST_BEST_FRIENDSAuthor: Sam FreddyCHAPTER 8: HEARTBREAK ON A FULL MOON.———At nine o'clock on the dot, Candice stumbled into her dormitory with her high-heeled shoes in her hands. She also held several fancy plastic bags in the crooks of her long arms as she plopped down on a lower bunk, due to exhaustion. All of Candice's roommates started hailing her like their lives depended on it, all because of the tantalizing goodies which she brought back home.“Welcome home, Sisi Eko. We all thought that you wouldn't return today.” Alice teased as she snatched one of the bags from Candice's arm for herself. “I trust you had fun with that rich yellow pawpaw guy, right?”“You bet!” Candice admitted dreamily, closing her eyes with her head inclined. “In fact, fun is a complete understa
#JUST_BEST_FRIENDSAuthor: Sam FreddyCHAPTER 9: THE REQUEST.———Four days later. Sunday. 8:03 AM.Dressed in a dark brown halter top and tight, faded shorts with a pair of clean black sneakers on her feet, Candice stood in a long queue of people waiting at a bus stop for the next transit bus. She was the last person on the line, and it angered her immensely because she had other places to be.Yomi's crib, for example, was the first place on Candice's list. She wanted to pay him a surprise visit today before doing the same to her other boyfriends' houses. But the slow-moving queue was practically killing her and wasting her precious time.Candice almost wished she could grow angelic wings to fly away from there, but she knew better than to wish for the impossible.
#JUST_BEST_FRIENDSAuthor: Sam FreddyCHAPTER 10: ALL THE BEST.———Yomi's smile faded at once. “What? Fifty thousand Naira? Jeez, that's one helluva huge amount of money, Candy.”“I know, babe.” Candice whispered, toying with Yomi's nipple with her thumb and index finger. “Trust me, I do. But I need it urgently, baby.”“What for?”“For my handouts and toiletries and blah blah blah.” Candice lied, feigning sadness. “I mean, I'm owing some people in my department who need their money back before this month ends. And that is the most worrisome part about this entire thing. I remember asking my older sister for help, like, three weeks ago or something, but she hasn't gotten back to me till date. In fact, she doesn't pick my calls anymore.&rdqu
#JUST_BEST_FRIENDS FINAL CHAPTERAuthor: Samuel FrederickCHAPTER 43: RIP.———Three days later. Friday. 9:00 AM.Ebony Millennium Cemetery, Lagos, Nigeria.Undoubtedly, today was a sad day for Yomi's loved ones. It was his funeral, and sorrow filled the air of the venue like a thunderstorm. His parents, friends, neighbours and colleagues were all present at the ceremony to honour him, and it wasn't easy for any of them to be here in this cemetery, especially with the sight of Yomi's corpse which laid in a grand casket on a small podium that had a lot of his portraits all over it.Unlike many African funerals, this occasion was a small and simple one hosted by Yomi's family. He was so close to his parents when he was alive to the point that he felt comfortable talking to them about anything and ever
#JUST_BEST_FRIENDS Author: Sam Freddy CHAPTER 42: GOODBYE. — — — It is said that just before one dies, their whole life flashes before their very eyes, and that was almost the case for Yomi tonight. He should've died after taking that pill, but somehow, he opened his eyes and found himself on a sick bed, right next to his friends who surrounded him with gloomy faces. Despite his blurry vision, he could pinpoint the four people in the room, which were Tayo, Danladi, Isioma and Idara, who sat right beside him on the bed with her head down, worried, while the rest of them sat on their respective chairs and had their eyes fixated elsewhere, apparently worried too, judging from the silence in the room. The only thing that could be heard was the constant beeping of the machine that was connected to Yomi's wrist to monitor his heart
#JUST_BEST_FRIENDSAuthor: Sam FreddyCHAPTER 41: HOMICIDE.———Furiously, Yomi pulled over to the roadside and hopped out of his car. He'd just arrived in Candice's street, and he had just one intention as he headed straight to her apartment, which wasn't going to favour her in any freaking way. Not at all.He heard loud music booming from the inside as he knocked on her door, and due to that, it took a little while for her to open up for him, and she was utterly stunned when she saw him at her doorstep at ten o'clock at night. However, at first sight, Yomi found Candice's appearance very ridiculous. She was dressed in a baggy shirt with no underwear — he could tell by the way her nipples poked at him like spikes and from the outlines of her nether regions — and she was a complete mess right now: her hair w
#JUST_BEST_FRIENDSAuthor: Sam FreddyCHAPTER 40: MEMORIES.———HIV?Yomi still couldn't fathom it even after leaving the hospital with anger about three hours ago. He'd abandoned Candice there, and instead of going home directly, he went to a bar to have a couple of drinks, and now he was seated in his car, somewhat tipsy, battling with his worries again. How on Earth could he be HIV positive? How did he let this happen? He still had a long way to go in life and he didn't need this at all. Thinking about the impact it would have on his health in a couple of years to come scared him to the bone. He couldn't imagine the virus metamorphosing into AIDS and wrecking his system down, bit by bit, until he was skinny enough to be compared to a skeleton, or probably die from its drastic effect on his health.
#JUST_BEST_FRIENDSAuthor: Sam FreddyCHAPTER 39: A DREAM COME TRUE.———On this cool Tuesday evening, the air was crisp and clear at the beach, and there were only a few people roaming about, which paved the way for Idara and Tayo's little romantic picnic on the sand.Well, they weren't actually sitting on the sand since they had a big mat spread out, which housed a plastic tray and a big basket that contained various fresh fruits and a bottle of champagne and two glasses as well, including Idara's fancy tote bag.Since the picnic was only a minor flex, Idara wasn't dressed to kill. All she wore was a brown floppy hat and a palm leaf-printed tube top, plus a unique drawstring denim shorts with brown strappy sandals on her feet, coupled with some colorful waist beads and blue wristbands and an anklet too. And, of course, she
#JUST_BEST_FRIENDSAuthor: Sam FreddyCHAPTER 38: THE BIG NEWS.———Panting heavily, Yomi barged into Candice's ward and saw her lying on the sick bed, her cheeks swollen like a balloon. Although she wasn't unconscious, she couldn't talk, mainly because the memory of the earlier occurrence kept playing over and over in her mind, making her shed tears on the spot. She'd never been humiliated like that in her entire life. The shame was just too much for her to shoulder alone.Yomi — who was at work when he received a call from a stranger who had informed him about the incident and had left all what he was doing to come here — stood before Candice, baffled by her unlikely appearance. Not only was her face red with bruises all over her hands and legs — most of which were covered in bandages — but she also reeked of egusi soup
#JUST_BEST_FRIENDS Author: Sam Freddy CHAPTER 37: KARMA STRIKES. — — — As a baker, Isioma had quite a lot of loyal customers in her school, simply because of the outstanding quality of her products and their affordability, and of course her exceptional marketing skills and her friendliness too. Today, she'd come to deliver a birthday cake to an evangelist's wife in the school's central church and she was heading out when she spotted someone kneeling before the altar, praying. To Isioma's surprise, it was Jordan, and he'd just concluded his prayer when she saw him. He stood up and sighted Isioma behind him. “Isioma!” Jordan exclaimed at once. “Are you spying on me?” “I wish I was,” Isioma replied, amused. “But, actually, I came here for business. I was on my way out when I saw you. What a pleasant surprise.”
#JUST_BEST_FRIENDSAuthor: Sam FreddyCHAPTER 36: DEEP REGRET.———Rocking a blue bucket hat with extra dark sunshades, a navy blue long-sleeved jacket, a white baggy shirt inside and black jiggy jeans, coupled with a matching pair of white socks and black and white Nike shoes, Isioma sauntered out of her lecturer's office like a boss, feeling on top of the world.Mike, who had been waiting for her on a bench for over ten minutes, jumped up on seeing her. She had a big smile on her face, which prompted Mike to ask, “It's about time! So how did it go?”“Well, it seems I won't be having any more trouble from Mr. Rochas, pal.” Isioma reported, pocketing her sunshades. “The big bad wolf has surrendered, miraculously.”“Aha! You see? I told you my plan would work!&rdqu
#JUST_BEST_FRIENDSAuthor: Sam FreddyCHAPTER 35: A WAKE-UP CALL.———Sunday, 8:20 AM, exactly three days after Idara's family's reunion.“So that's the house over there, down the road.” Mike announced, as he and Isioma alighted from a tricycle. “The big-ass one with the fancy painting and stuff.”“Oh.” Isioma's eyes traced Mike's index finger till they landed on a unique two storey building. “Are you sure?”“If I wasn't sure, will I be here with you? Of course I am.”“Perfect.” Isioma said, savouring the classiness of her surroundings. “What a nice estate. No wonder bikes and tricycles aren't allowed here. Anyway, what now?”“Now, let me give my sassy step-sister one l
