Shawn sighed as he replied to a text from another of his classmate, asking why he had missed classes. He typed that he had something very urgent to do and once he was done, he would return to school. Then he tossed his phone on the bed and went out to answer his mother's calls.
As he walked into the kitchen, he saw her by the sink doing some dishes. She looked so fragile. Her gold and gray hair was tied into a neat bun and she wore an apron around her waist. Her petite figure made her look younger and if not for the wrinkles on her face and the striking resemblance between them, no one would believe she birthed him.
He walked toward her and wrapped his arms around her in a warm embrace, cuddling his head toward her neck. She gave a light chuckle as she wiped her hands and caressed his hair with one hand.
“What trouble did you cause this time?” Rachel asked sarcastically as she began doing the dishes again.
Shawn pouted as he released her shoulders. “This time? Mom, I never cause trouble.” He sulked, folding his arms across his chest.
Rachel nodded. “Yeah, right. Then, why were you suspended? Principal Dolan said you talked back at him.” She continued, ignoring Shawn's pout.
Shawn scoffed. “He exaggerated. I'm sharing a friend's punishment. She was supposed to be expelled.”
Rachel sighed and placed another plate in the rack. “Jade caused trouble again? What did she do this time?”
Shawn muttered. “I never said it was Jade.”
Rachel turned to face him, her green eyes sparkling with certainty. “She's your only friend.” She remarked and Shawn gave a light smile. She pulled off her gloves and washed her hands. Then, she opened the fridge and brought out a food flask which she handed over to him. “Here, I made your favorite.”
Shawn sighed as he took it from her. “Thanks. Mom, I'm sorry.” He said, apologetically.
“For what? Helping out a friend? You shouldn't be.” Rachel replied as she filled up a glass with orange juice for him.
“But this affects everything. My perfect GPA will be ruined and I might even lose my scholarships. If that happens, all your hard work..” Shawn said, feeling remorseful.
Rachel gave a light chuckle and placed the glass of juice on the table before replying. “You knew that yet you went ahead with it. You can't go back now. Besides, there's more to life than high school and college. I'm pretty sure that Jade, before she was broken, would do the same.”
“Thanks, Mom. What will I do without you?” Shawn said gratefully and Rachel smiled. He sat down on a dining chair to eat. He opened the box and saw the one meal that he had felt was the easiest to make and had claimed it as his favorite so that his mother wouldn't have to stress herself -sandwich.
He raised the sandwich to his mouth and was about to take a bite when he heard his father scream his name. His heartbeat increased rapidly as he dropped the sandwich and left the kitchen to the sitting room, where the sound had come from.
As he walked into the sitting room, he saw his father standing by the door. His face was red with anger and his brown irises glinted with rage. He walked angrily toward him, removing his belt in the process.
Shawn knew his anger could only mean one thing - he had been informed of his suspension. He sighed and knelt as it always ended up better for him when he didn't try to struggle. He closed his eyes as his father, Sergio, stood in front of him. He could smell the nasty odor of tobacco and vodka coming from Sergio and he could hear his heavy breathing from where he knelt.
He tried to remember the good times, when his father still had his job and treated his mother like a queen. The times when his father showed by his words and actions how much he loved him. The time when they were one big family.
He wished he could go back to those times. And, he hoped it wasn't just lies his mother fed him with so he wouldn't hate his father. Because he had begun to doubt if the monster he's known all his life was ever a man.
“Do not push me to the wall, Rachel. I'm trying to discipline this wayward boy of yours.” He heard his father say and he opened his eyes. His mother was standing between them, holding an end of the belt.
“Over my dead body will you touch my son.” She said, looking up to him defiantly. Her small frame compared to his huge stature made her feel like an ant challenging an elephant. But, she didn't care. Sergio could hurt her all he wanted but she would never let him touch her son.
“Fine,” Sergio said as he threw his belt away and grabbed Rachel by her neck. This was the third time she was challenging and since the other two experiences didn't teach, this was surely going to get her senses straight.
Shawn bolted up at the sight of this and reached for Sergio's arm, trying to release his grip on Rachel's neck but Sergio pushed him away. He stood up and ran to Sergio again and Sergio pushed him away again, causing him to bang his head on the wall.
Shawn blinked his eyes as his head spun. Fortunately for him, it didn't bleed but it hurt a lot. He could only see silhouettes of his parents but he could hear the whimpers of his mother. She was getting weaker with each second. He reached his hand toward the door and grabbed the fire extinguisher by it. Dragging himself up, he hit Sergio's head with it. Sergio muttered some curse words as he released Rachel and turned slowly to face Shawn.
Seeing the blood trickling down his forehead, Shawn dropped the extinguisher. His knees went weak as he watched his father fall flat on the floor. Tears rolled down his eyes as he knelt beside him. He was slowly becoming his worst fear.
His mother placed a hand on his shoulder, probably to reassure him, but he shrugged it off. Then he stood up and walked out of the house ignoring his mother's cries.
As he stepped into the darkness outside, sorrow surged through him and he struggled to hold back the tears in his eyes. He walked further away from his house, hoping and praying that nothing bad would happen to his father and that he would never be like him.
Reaching the highway, he realized that he had nowhere to go. It wasn't that he had no place to go as he had classmates who would willingly open up their houses to him, but it was that there was no place he could go to with the assurance that his father wouldn't be able to make trouble.
There was actually one place he could go to - one person his father dare not offend. But he doubted that Jade would let him into her home. Even though there was a big chance that she wouldn't let him in, he decided to go to her anyway.
Jade glared at the door, her jaw and fists clenched and her muscles tense, wishing that the person on the other side of it would go away. She wanted to be alone. She needed to be alone. Especially after the memories that had flooded her brain, ruining her sleep. The knocks on the door continued in a rhythmic pattern and she stood up and walked angrily to the door. Muttering to herself that she would slap the maid if she were the one at the door, she reached to open it. Her father was away on a business trip and her 'very annoying stepmother' had gone to visit her mother so she and the maid were the only ones in the house. She pressed the handle and pulled the door open - trying to keep herself from slapping the person at the door - to see Shawn standing at her door. His gold hair was in a messy state and his green eyes looked troubled. Jade took a deep breath to calm herself before asking the 'handsome stranger' why he show
"Hey! Hey!! Bucket!!!" Jade whispered as she tapped a sleeping Shawn. He shrugged away her hand and changed his sleeping position. Giving an evil smirk, she stood up and walked into the restroom. She wet a face towel and took it into the room. She took one look at Shawn as he lay on the bed, clinging onto the pillow, before placing the wet towel over his face.Shawn jumped up from the bed immediately and she burst into laughter. He had a confused look on his face as he stared blankly at her. After a few seconds, he remembered where he was and began rubbing his eyes and face, trying to get rid of the traces of drool.Jade laughed a bit more before standing up and walking to the door. She opened the door then turned back to look at him, still amused at his naivety. "Wash up and come out for breakfast. I've decided on what I want you to do." She mused before walking away and closing the door.Shawn breathed a sigh of relief
Shawn could feel the cool humid air rolling down from under a forested hillside, making his hair flutter. He could smell the road dust, the oil, the exhaust, the herby scent of weeds and wildflowers on the roadside. He could hear the humming of songbirds and the whirring of the motorcycle beneath him.He could also feel the bike rumbling and vibrating underneath him and each time he leaned with Jade to tilt the bike, he felt like it was a part of him. Even though he had been scared at first, when he wrapped his arms around Jade's waist, he had felt safer. And for the first time in his life, he felt alive. He felt free. The bike came to a stop at a mall and he released Jade. A surge came running in his head and he felt nauseous. He practically jumped off the bike and ran into the restroom to spill out his guts. After he was done, he flushed the toilet and rinsed his face.He saw his reflection in the mirror and cringed at i
Shawn's eyes widened and his jaw dropped as he stared at Jade. She was wearing the violet-colored gown he had picked out for her. He hadn't expected her to wear the dress but she did and she was looking stunning in it. The shade matched her skin color and together with her messy bun and bright eyes, Shawn felt she looked like a doll. His lips curled up into a smile as he noticed the contrast between the bitchy Goth at school and his adorable best friend. She looked a thousand times friendlier than she did wearing all that Gothic stuff. She walked toward him and he opened his mouth to say a compliment but he was cut short by a hit on his forehead. He grunted, placing his hand on his head as he watched the girl who had just jumped up to slap him, roll her eyes at him.“What? It's beautiful and it suits you.” He defended, glad that she had worn it.Jade scoffed, still
Soon, the taxi arrived at their destination - Dreamyland Amusement Park. They got of the taxi and walked into the park. Jade excused herself and went to pay for tickets, leaving Shawn to admire the place.Shawn felt emotional as he looked around. The park was just like he'd imagined it to be. From the smell of candy in the air and the colorful environment to the costumed characters walking around the park, it was almost how he'd imagined it to be. The only slight difference was that it was a Wednesday and there weren't many people at the park.He took a deep breath in as he thought of how he'd longed to visit here. How his parents had made empty promises to him whenever he'd asked them to take him. How he'd forced himself to believe he had no interest in these things anymore but deep down, he knew he still longed for it.But, as he stood there, knowing he could finally satisfy the longing, he couldn't h
The ride home was quiet. Jade sat in the taxi looking at her phone, her face devoid of any emotion. Shawn sat beside her, leaning his head on the glass and staring at his reflection. He was blaming himself for what had happened.Jade was beautiful. Although her beauty did not appeal to him romantically, it did to others. She had been harassed in his presence a lot of times before. It was probably why she always had on a Gothic makeup. It repelled people from her. But he made her take off her protective layer. He definitely was to blame. He knew she was mad. Even though she seemed very calm on the outside, she was certainly burning inside. He wished she would say it out. He wanted her to blame him. To scold him. Or at least show her emotions. But he knew she wouldn't.He just sat there silently, watching the lights on the streets and shops as the taxi sped through the roadway. When it eventually stopped in front of her house, he was reluctant to come out.
Jade muffled a grunt as she stood up from the floor where she had fallen. She cursed at herself for not cleaning the floor where she had spilled water earlier. Now it had made her slip when she had an important business to take care of. However, she decided not to clean it.She made her way out as quietly as she could, trying to ignore the pain in her upper back. As she stepped out into the darkness of the backyard, she merged into the darkness. She was dressed in black cargo pants and jacket, and leather boots. Her black hair was tied up in a ponytail and was covered by a black cap. Around her waist was a leather bag and on her hands were black leather gloves. She ran to the fence and jumped over it into the neighbor's house. Then she went out through the open gate into the roadway. She waved down a taxi immediately and entered into it, careful not to alert her bodyguards. The taxi driver gave her suspicious looks but he still drove her to her destination anyway.
“Please!!!” Shawn pleaded, his eyes widening as he stared up at Jade. Turning her back to him, Jade continued eating her cereal, chewing as quickly as she could so she could disappear from Shawn's sight. She was sure to lose her temper if he continued pestering her.“Forget it, Shawn. I'm not teaching you anything.” Jade said as Shawn came to squat in front of her. She placed her plate to her mouth and used her spoon to push the remaining food into her mouth. Chewing slowly, she stood up and made her way into the kitchen, trying to ignore the fact that Shawn was following her around. He stood by the counter watching her as she rinsed her bowl and put it back with the others. And as she walked out of the kitchen, he followed closely behind.Jade sighed as she stopped abruptly, making Shawn almost bump into her. Shawn was using her trick against her and it made her uncomfortable. She didn't want to teach him to fight. It wasn't a plea
Jade hummed happily as she removed the chicken from the oven. She carefully carried it and placed it on the counter. She carried a tray containing Mac and cheese and put it in the oven. After closing it and setting the timer, she went back to chopping the cabbage she had been working on before the oven had beeped. She heard silent footsteps behind her and her nerves tensed up. The only person in the house who walked that quietly was Sally. She never forgave Sally for ruining her parents' marriage and she had planned on making life as miserable as she could for her. However, she had promised to be nicer to her and while she didn't know how to go about it, she knew it involved not chasing her out of the kitchen. “Uhm... Hi.” Sally said awkwardly, making Jade cringe. What on earth did Jacob see in a woman that struggles to even have a conversation? “What are you making?” Sally asked in an attempt to get Jade to talk. It was always like this, she would try to engage her in a conversat
7:45 a.m. Shawn sighed with relief as he checked his phone. He was right on time. He knocked on the door of the principal's office feeling somewhat lucky. His father was currently behind bars so his mother was safe. He had found a job and could now support himself and his mother. His suspension had been rescinded and so he was back on track to emerging as the valedictorian. And best of all, his estranged best friend was again warming up to him. Also, even though he had only woken up about thirty minutes ago, he had somehow managed to be on time for his appointment with Principal Dolan. The universe seemed to be working in his favor. He was about to knock again when he heard footsteps and a chuckle from behind him. He turned around and saw Principal Dolan and Jacob Adler - Jade's father - walking toward the office. Immediately, he bowed his head a little, offering a word of appreciation to Jacob but all he did was smile at him.Principal Dolan cleared his throat, stretching out his han
Jade shut the door after Jacob left, biting her lip as she walked to the bathroom. She stared at her reflection in the mirror, tears falling from her eyes. She hated the person she was becoming - an irritable person with no interest in life who keeps pushing away everyone from her. She didn't want to spend the rest of her life alone but she knew she probably would. Everyone she knew hated her. Rachel, Sergio, Principal Dolan, her teachers, and her classmates all hated her. Sally only pretended to like her because she was her father's wife. Lewis only protected her because he was paid to. Jacob couldn't wait to be rid of her. And Shawn - she had no idea why he was even pretending to like her. She closed her eyes trying to imagine a life where nothing went wrong. A life where her father didn't cheat on her mother. Or one where her mother forgave him. She would probably still be alive and Jade would be a carefree youth with a perfect family. A straight-A student whose goal is
Shawn trudged slowly along the street, his phone in his hand, praying for a call from Jade. He hoped she'd stop being difficult and let him by her side. Even though he knew it would never happen, he still wished she could go back to being the carefree yet lovable girl he used to know. He wished he could reverse time. He would make sure she never got hurt. But these were all wishful thinking. Jade had changed and was never going to call him back and if he doesn't return to his home, he'd have to sleep on the streets. He hated the idea of returning to his home. Being in it made him feel caged up and now that he had tasted freedom, he was reluctant to go back to his cage.He groaned, coming to an abrupt stop. It was the middle of the night and he was stuck outside with no money on him and nowhere to go. Heck, he hadn't stayed up this late intentionally before. Thinking about it made him want to cry, but according to his father, real men don't cry - only sissies do.
Jade tapped her feet impatiently on the floor as she scrolled through Netflix, searching for something to watch. None appealed to her as her mind was preoccupied with Shawn. It was almost 9 pm and he still hadn't returned. He hadn't even sent her a text to inform her of his job or that he wanted to move out.Now that Sergio was away, and only his mom was home, it made sense for him to accompany her. She was being selfish to hope he would still stay with her. To hope he would choose her over his mom. To think she meant anything to him.All his smooth talks about being best friends were to get something from her. He was just looking for a place to stay. Maybe, he had intentionally shared in her punishment to get her to trust him. He was a smart kid and always weighed his decisions carefully. He had a backup plan for his backup plan. Why would he intentionally jeopardize his future by ruining his perfect school record with a suspension if he had nothing to gain?
Jade scratched her head as she walked down the stairs. She hadn't looked in a mirror since she woke up but she was sure she looked very untidy. She had overslept and had had a pleasant dream. Her mouth was plastered with dried drool and her hair was in a tangled mess. Her eyes were probably swollen from her very long and peaceful sleep. She knew she was supposed to wash up first but she woke up feeling very thirsty. If she didn't drink water, she reasoned she'd turn to stone. So it didn't matter how heavy her legs were and how messy she looked she trudged towards the kitchen to get a drink. She grabbed a bottle of water from the fridge and immediately gulped it down. Once she was done, she proceeded to wash her face in the sink."I'll take it that you had a great sleep last night." She heard Lewis's voice and she lifted her head turning it in his direction. He was leaning by the kitchen door eating a bowl of cereal."What time is it?" She asked making a futile
“Hey. Are you okay?” She heard Shawn ask and felt his hand on her shoulder. She rose to her feet, wiping her hands across her face. “Yeah, sure. I'm fine. I'm okay.” She replied with a faint smile.Shawn pressed his lips together, not wanting to inquire further. “Uh... Okay. So, what do we do about him?” He asked, tilting his head toward Sergio.“What do you suggest?”“Turn him in. Charged for assault against you.”“Okay.” “You should go.” Jade furrowed her brows. “Alone?” She asked, a lump rising up her throat. She was reluctant to let Shawn leave. Her life was much better whenever he was with her.“My dad's not a problem anymore.” He replied, smiling sadly at her.Jade shook her head, clutching the hem of his shirt. “You can't tell. And you haven't done your part yet. Take me home.”Shawn gave her a confused look. “Uh...” “Remember when we were ten and I sprained my ankle.”“Yeah, you insisted the floor was lava and climbed up the fridge. If I hadn't softened your fall, it would
Bang!!! The sound of a door banging echoed from inside the house. Shawn bolted into the house and Jade ran after him. The entrance door was wide open and the sitting room was a mess. Broken glass, clothes - some torn, others intact - and a bunch of books littered the floor and giving Shawn an idea of what was happening. His dad had probably wanted to destroy everything that belonged to him in his rage but his mother had disallowed him. Shawn pressed his lips together, balling his fists as he ran to the kitchen where Sergio was banging against the door.“Leave my mother alone!” He said, earning him a stare and a chuckle from Sergio. “You wanted me. Here I am. Leave mom out of this.” Shawn said again as Sergio turned to face the door again.Sergio glared at him. “She's not your mom! She's my wife and you're not my son. Not anymore. So, she's not your mom.” He turned to face the door. “Rachel, you have five minutes to come out to me. If you don't, I'll break down this
Shawn sighed as he watched Jade run in and out of the water. She was giggling loudly as she chased crabs and threw them into the sea whenever she caught any. Even though he had excused himself from going into the water, she still seemed to be having a good time. If he went away now, she wouldn't notice. He turned around to look at Lewis who was still standing where Jade had told him to. He was holding her shoes, hat, the sunglasses she had turned back halfway to get, and the swimwear she decided not to wear anymore. All his attention was on her, and even though it was barely visible, Shawn could still see the smile on his face as he watched Jade. If it weren't Jade whom Lewis was watching and smiling, he would have tagged him a pervert or a freak. But, knowing who Jade was and everything she's gone through, seeing her smile should be enough to melt the hardest heart. Besides, he could tell that Lewis cared a lot for Jade. It wasn't a type of care he had been gi
