"Take a seat," he said, nodding towards the bed. I looked at him uncertainly. "You can sit at the desk if you're more comfortable."

I opted for the latter. "So what's up?" I asked.

"I'm sorry about what happened downstairs with Scott. I kinda feel like it was my fault. I was talking about getting you in the sack and I guess after a few beers it sounded like a good idea to him, too."

"Why can't you just accept that I'm Simon's girlfriend? Jackson, I don't wanna sleep with you, if I did, I would've waited for you to ask me out. Not that it ever would've happened." I rolled my eyes at his expression of disbelief. Jackson wasn't used to girls telling him that they didn't want to have sex with him. "You just want me because I'm Simon's, and you have a reputation to uphold."

He sighed and buried his hands in the pocket of his jeans. "That's not entirely true… The fact that you're Simon's girlfriend does make you a bit more desirable, and I might not have ever pursued you if you weren't dating him… but you're a pretty girl, Sophie. Before you were dating Simon I'd see you at lunch or whatever, and I noticed that. "

I scoffed at him. "Oh puh-lease."

"I'm serious!"

"Do you think I'm stupid? I know what you're trying to do!"

"What am I trying to do?" He asked, feigning innocence.

"Charm me right out of my pants."

He chuckled, his green eyes glistening with mischief. "Cupcake, if I wanted you out of your pants, it wouldn't take long."

"Are you suggesting rape?"

"No. I could convince you. You've seen me naked, you can't tell me you'd say no."

I got up. "You know, when you started this conversation you actually seemed like you were gonna be a decent guy… and now you're back to being your usual repulsive self."

He shrugged, batting his eyelashes at me. "It's who I am, what can I do?"

I left walked out and returned to my boyfriend. When I opened the bedroom door I found him curled up, asleep. I stood just inside the room, wondering how I was going to get home. Jackson was drunk and I didn't hang out with anyone that was downstairs.

"You can take the guestroom," said Jackson. "I'm too wasted to drive." He went into his brother's room, got a t-shirt out of his drawer, and tossed it to me. On his way out, he bent down and pressed a kiss to my forehead.

"Don't do that!" I hissed.

"I'm sorry. You're kinda irresistible."

I hurried down the hall to the guestroom before he could pull another stunt. Mostly because if his lips touched my skin again… he'd be right about my pants coming off; not that I'd ever admit that to him. I changed into Simon's t-shirt and got into bed. After a few minutes it became apparent to me that sleep wouldn't come easy.

I tossed and turned, thoughts of Jackson whirled in my head. He kissed me… sure, it hadn't been on the lips, but it was enough to leave me feeling all hot and bothered. Jesus, I was a horrible girlfriend. It wasn't as if I'd invited Jackson to kiss me, though. I rolled over on my stomach, trying to without success to get more comfortable. I wondered if I should tell Simon about what had happened with Scott, or more importantly, what had happened with Jackson. It wasn't a huge deal as of now, but if I told Simon, it would become one very quickly. I decided to keep it to myself, at least for now. After about thirty minutes of staring at the ceiling, I finally succumbed to sleep.

When I woke up, someone's arm was around me. Assuming it was Simon, I snuggled against him. As soon as I felt his rock-hard body against mine, I realized my mistake. It was Jackson.

"What the hell!?" I shrieked, pushing away from him, which ultimately resulted in me rolling right onto the floor. "Shit!"

I heard Jack groan. "Shh… I've got a headache."

"What are you doing in here!?" I cried, ignoring his request for me to lower my voice. "Jackson, Simon is going to kill you when he finds out about this!"

"I didn't do anything," he muttered, sitting up. He ran his hands over his face. He looked disheveled, and his eyes were bloodshot. "You're dressed, I'm dressed… it's all good."

"No it's not! You had your arm around me! Why were you in here?!"

"You cuddled into me last night, cupcake. I'm in here because Scott and some chick went into my room last night, and I was ready to go to bed."

"There's a thing called a couch," I growled sardonically.

"I'm too tall for that couch. It's not the end of the world, Sophie. We shared a bed, not bodily fluids."

I cringed at the thought. "You have no respect for your brother, do you?"

"Where do you expect me to sleep?"

"The floor?"

"This is my house! Why should I have to sleep on the floor?"

"You're the dumbass that let your slimy best friend use your bed." I got off the floor and left the room. "I'd wash your sheets twice, if I were you," I told him, before slamming the door.

Twenty minutes later, I was back home. Luckily, Simon was feeling well enough to bring me home, so I didn't have to deal with Jackson again, at least not until his party later on tonight. It was unlikely he'd even speak to me then, since all of his friends were going to be around.

My mom and dad were sitting at the kitchen table, eating breakfast when I came in.

"Where were you last night, Sophie?" My mother asked, not looking up from the newspaper.

"I stayed at Ellie's. We were babysitting Connor." That was Ellie's little brother. "You guys didn't call, so I figured you weren't too worried."

"Well, we went out, so we didn't notice you were gone until this morning."

Typical. My parents weren't bad people or anything; they were just kind of wrapped up in themselves.

"How's Simon?" asked my mom, straining to appear interested.

"He's sick, but other than that he's okay. Anyway…" I edged towards the stairs. "I'm gonna go upstairs now."

"All right, sweetie. We'll see you later," Mom said sweetly, and I went up to my room.

I went into my room and flopped down on the bed. God, I hated my bedroom. It looked like it belonged to an eight-year-old, which made sense, considering that was the last time I'd redecorated. The walls were pale pink and my bedspread had tiny roses on it. The furniture was all white and I was still stuck in a twin bed. Mother and I had talked about redoing it last summer, but of course, it didn't happen. There was no use worrying about it now, I decided. For a while, I just sat there, staring at the little roses and thinking about Jackson. Being in bed with him hadn't been all that unpleasant. He'd been warm and I'd fit against him perfectly. The thoughts started to get a little out of hand, so I called Ellie to distract myself.

"How was the ride home with Jackson!? I want details!" Ellie blabbered at about a million miles-per-hour.

I held the phone away from my ear, grimacing. "Take it easy, will you?" I sighed. "Nothing much happened on the ride home... but stuff did happen. Meet me for a smoothie, why don't you? I'll fill you in."

"Okay! I'll meet you in ten! I'm so excited, it's juicy isn't it?!"

"You'll find out soon enough, Elle." I said and hung up the phone.

Ellie and I met at our usual hangout, the Bean Street Café. She was practically bouncing with excitement by the time we sat down with our smoothies."Tell me, tell me!" She insisted."Well, on the ride he pretty much talked to Scott the whole time. When we got home, though, I had a little run-in with Scott... he tried to get a little somethin'-somethin'... Jackson came in and screamed at him, and after I went upstairs he came up to apologize. It was really sweet at first, but then he started talking about getting my pants off, and that eliminated all the sweetness." I took a drink of my smoothie."Is that all?" she asked, sounding disappointed."No. Before I went to bed he kissed me on the forehead... and I know that it's really lame, but oh my God, it was niiiiice. Seriously, should a kiss on the forehead feel that... dirty?""Well, since it's your boyfriend's brother and he's really, really freaki

Before too long, Simon and I heard music blaring downstairs."Do your parents know about this?" I asked."Well, Jackson told them we were having a 'get together'. He didn't mention how many people would be coming.""How many people are expected to show up?""Hell if I know. Word gets around pretty quick about Jackson's parties. So basically we just get a lot of booze and hope it doesn't get ugly."I'd never been to one of Jackson's parties. Simon always invited me, but I never felt comfortable enough around his brother to go. I wasn't really sure what to expect."It'll be fun, Sophie. Don't worry." He stood and then helped me to my feet. "People will be here soon, let's go downstairs."People arrived quickly, and the house got full very quickly. The living room smelled like potato chips, beer, and sweat. The music was so loud I couldn't hear myself think. I stayed b

"Go away Sophie! I put up with you grinding on a bunch of guys all night, but seeing you make-out withScott...I couldn't take that. Then you end up in my brother's bed?! There's a little thing called loyalty, and I don't think it's too much to ask for you to give me that one little thing!""I was completely shit-faced! I had no idea what I was doing! You could try to be a little more understanding. Why didn't you take me upstairs? You had to know I was going to do something I was going to regret! The only reason I was in Jackson's bed was because he was nice enough to make sure I didn't drown in my own puke!" I shook my head. "Maybe he cares about me more than you do.""Oh, don't give me that! If you like Jackson so much better, fine! Date him!""Simon, I don't want to date Jackson. I just don't understand why you're getting so worked up. If you would've gotten drunk and done the same thing... I would cut you some slack.

Ellie came over forty-five minutes later, dressed for work. We sat out on the deck and drank lemonade, a tradition we'd had since fifth grade. The first thing I told her was, "Simon broke up with me.""What!? Why?""Apparently, I fucked up bad at the party last night. I made out with Scott... and then I was with Jackson all morning, because Simon wouldn't take care of me and he wanted to make sure that I was okay. Simon just doesn't trust me at all!""It feels like you guys have been together forever... I mean I know it was only six months... but it seems like so much longer. Is there anyway you'll get back together?""Jackson seems to think so... He wassosweet, it was kind of scary.""He wasn't sweet to me at all. I'll see you tomorrow.""All right, sweetheart. I love you.""Yeah, you too," I muttered. The minute I hung up the phone the doorbell rang. Thinking about Jackson didn't get me anywhere; thoughts of his lips on mine and the intoxicating scent of his cologne that still lingered in the air only made me feel one thing, and I'm not going to talk about it. I figured it was best to just let it go. Every time I closed my eyes, however, I saw Jackson. It wasn't an unpleasant image, but it made it really hard to sleep. When I finally did get to sleep, he haunted my dreams. I woke up feeling refreshed, but I was a little worried about riding with Jackson. Sure, we'd supposedly gotten rid of temptation, but I had the feeling that it wouldn't stop Jackson from making a move.At 7:40 in the morning, Jackson honked his horn. I grabbed my purse and rushed out the door. I got into the front seat of the car and gave Jackson a smile."Morning Sophie," he said."Hey.""About last night...""Yeah?""It'd be best if no one knew about it."

Turns out that Jackson was lying. He didn't come back. Not after five minutes, not after ten. All right, I'm lame; I actually sat on the couch for ten minutes waiting for Jackson to come back with my drink. Finally, I got up and went into the kitchen. I didn't see Jackson, instead, I saw Simon drinking orange juice out of the carton."Sophie?!" he cried, almost spitting out his juice."Um... Where's your brother?""He left... what in the hell are you doing here?""What do you mean heleft?!""I mean he got in his car, started it, and drove away," he said slowly.I sighed in frustration. Summer turned out to be the best time in our relationship. We spent every day together and didn't take any of our time for granted. One day as we were driving home from having coffee with Wyette and Brent, I glanced over at Jackson."I feel bad," I murmured."What for?""You never hang out with your friends anymore. Now you just hang with mine."He shook his head. "Your friends are my friends. The only real friends I've ever had, except for Brenda. Thank you for introducing us." He kissed my cheek. "And I'll get you guys into college parties.""Are you going to start drinking a bunch again?""No. I won't. Not after how hard you've worked to help me. I laid in bed and cried until about 5:45, then I fixed my make up. It didn't matter much to me what I looked like, but I was representing Jackson so I felt like I needed to be pretty. "I know that he's still going to be here for a few months, and that he'll less than an hour away… but…" she shook her head."It's okay," I murmured. "I've been crying since he left.""He'll come back and visit. We have to be happy for him. You ready to go?"I nodded. He was being the attentive, sweet boy that he had been to me when we'd first gotten together."Can we talk?" I asked softly."Where's Jackson?""With Ellie and Ronald. He doesn't need to be here for this. This is about us.""There is no us anymore, Sophie.""Look, can I please just have a minute? I'm not asking for much, Simon, just a minute. When the doorbell rang I disappeared into the bedroom. Things were quiet for about ten minutes, then Jackson started to shout… shortly after that, Scott started to… beg. After a while it sounded like things were getting out of hand so I went out to check on them."Jackson, baby… I think you're done," I told him. Blood was pouring from Scott's nose and his eyes were both a dark, angry shade of red."You bitch," Scott managed to utter. "You weren't supposed to tell anyone.""Excuse me?" Jackson snarled. "Did you just call my girlfriend a bitch?" He hit him again and I approached him cautiously."Let him go… it's not fair to mess him up too bad, he's already ugly."Jackson's body was rigid and his hands were bloodstained. There was something feral in his eyes, he smelled like sweat and cologne.

I think I've made it abundantly clear that I find you attractive whether or not you're all dolled up.""Well, you go ahead and go back to sleep," I told him. The walls had been painted a cream color and my bed was gone."I guess they were serious," Jackson said, looking around the room. There were a bunch of boxes full of my stuff on the floor. "At least they made it easy on me.""Do you want all of this?" He asked.I shook my head. "Mostly just the clothes. I sat on the edge of the bed. "I'm not mad that you drank… I just wish that you hadn't drank so much… because I really needed you, but you were out cold."He drew in a deep breath.
