“You..” My mother gasped.

She looked astounded as she stared at me. The veins on her wrinkled hands were already protruding due to her inexplicable rage. “W-when did you start using magic? Have you been hiding that for a long time?” She interrogated me. I didn’t understand the magic she was talking about. I thought she stopped that pot herself from hitting me, but it seemed it wasn’t her doing. How did it turn into dust? Is someone trying to protect me?

I was so deep in my thoughts when my witch mother suddenly created fire in her hands. I was flabbergasted as I watched her throw the fire at me. Was she really trying to kill me? Due to the overwhelming event, I forgot to breathe as I gaped at the approaching ball of fire.

My heart freaked out as the flame got closer, but when it was only a few inches away from me, it suddenly turned into a smoke. I couldn’t explain how it happened but I’m thankful I was not burned. I sighed in relief knowing that the universe is still protecting me. Maybe I was not brought here to get killed.

The turn of events made my witch mother infuriated. Her eyes were more intense than earlier. “You’ve been tricking me all this time?! How could you do this to your own mother?!” She exclaimed.

My throat was dried up facing a perilous woman. I got worried when the tiger stepped in front of me before her. I tried to pull it to get it behind me but it was too strong and heavy. It looked back at me and growled softly. My heart melted to the thought that it was trying to protect me. Poor cat, I’m already in love with you.

“What the heck are you doing?” My witch mother asked confusedly. I didn’t realize it at first, but I noticed that there weren't any pawprints on the swampy soil. I had mine and my witch mother’s, but it doesn’t have the tiger’s. Am I the only one seeing it? But Caius just saw it earlier too. The tiger started puzzling me…

“A-are you not seeing any tiger in here?” I asked warily. Her forehead creased as she looked around but the tiger was just standing in front of her. Her reaction confirmed that the tiger wasn’t visible to her.

“Nonsense! Are you trying to scare me now? Get inside and I’ll make you get back to your senses!” She yelled.

I was more flustered when she walked past the tiger and she just went through it. She pulled my right arm and dragged me inside the house. She’s got stronger arms than me at my young age. I watched the tiger growling at my mother as it walked behind us. She pushed me into a gloomy room painted with faded crimson red. I whimpered as I stumbled on the floor. The wound on my foot still aches.

“Let’s see how many spells you’ve got under your sleeves. I’ll cancel your wedding if you’ll be able to pass through this room.” She slammed the door and I heard the clicking of the lock behind. Did she just lock me in this depressing room?

I looked around and noticed there was just a small bed with tattered beddings and a shabby bedside table. The only light that came through was from the railed window near the ceiling. This seemed more like a prison than a room. My heart leaped when I saw the tiger’s head popping out from the closed door. I glided to the edge of the bed as the tiger went through the wooden door. It stopped right in front of my face and licked me, making me freeze.

“What are you?” I gasped as I watched it jump on the bed and stretched its body like how cats do, and it went to sleep. I was already fond of it moments earlier but I’m not sure anymore. It's kinda weird in a scary way. I was still curious why the witch wasn’t seeing it and why it just went through on things. I crawled on the floor to get closer to it. I was sure I had touched it realistically and I even rode on it. It was sound asleep so I slowly reached my hand to touch its fur and confirm. I froze when it suddenly opened its eyes.

“S-sorry, I-I just wanted to confirm something.” I stuttered. I wheezed when it rose from lying on the bed and it abruptly jumped towards me, my back fell on the floor as I stared nervously at its hungry eyes. Am I going to be eaten now?

I bit my lower lip to that terrifying thought while watching it hovering over me. It started to lower its head so I closed my eyes but I suddenly felt its cold tongue trickling my face. It made me giggle so I pushed it slightly. It went beside me and laid on its stomach. The tension I had started to fade. This tiger may seem ghostly but I felt secured around it and it seemed more reliable than anyone I’ve already met in this place.

I rested my head on its back and watched the patched ceiling. My forehead creased when I realized that I still don’t know its name. This tiger is so mysterious, what if it talks too? I got goosebumps as I imagined it, but still, I tilted my head towards its face and asked rashly, “Can I know your name?” I waited for a moment but it didn’t move so I thought I should just name it instead. I watched the ceiling again and started thinking of a good name for it. I remembered we’ve discussed Arabic names of animals during our history class. I tried to recall the Arabic name for tiger in Hebrew.

“Naa-meer?” I draweld. I flinched when the tiger suddenly raised its head and turned to me. “You like that name?” I asked amusedly and it started brushing its head to my face. “Fine, fine. I’ll call you Namir from now on.” I giggled. It stopped and laid on the floor again. I gently stroke its fur with my small fingers, while having thoughts of bringing it home with me. My hands halted when I realized I don’t even have a clue how to get back. That thought made my eyes teary. I’m already missing my mom. My stomach growled bluntly. And I’m hungry!

I heard a loud creaking of the door outside and footsteps pattering on the floor. There was a sonorous voice of a woman talking indistinctly. I got curious so I glided to the closed door and eavesdropped on their conversation.

“I will move the wedding next week. The earlier the better. Remind your daughter about her duty and make sure she won't be attached to that prince.” The woman said.

“You don’t have to worry my queen, my daughter is well-mannered and you know she has been obedient to you ever since she was a child. She’ll probably bear a prince of witch blood for you, my queen.” My mother said assuringly.

What???

“Once she gets pregnant, she must kill Caius and Morrigan. We won’t be needing them onwards. Where is she by the way?” The woman asked ruggedly. My body cringed to that evil plan. What kind of people are these? Their wickedness is overflowing.

“Sh-she’s currently in the woods… refining her spells. I’ll make sure to relay this to her once she gets home.” My mother lied sternly. I wanted to shout and tell them that I’m against their plan, but knowing that these people outside are not ordinary humans, I must zip my mouth and just make a plan to escape from here.

“Oh. How persevering! I guess I didn’t make a mistake choosing her. I want to talk to her sometime and test her abilities. I am hoping for an entertaining duel with her. Tell her to visit me in my castle whenever she’s confident.” I heard she sipped something and it was cluttered. Maybe she was having a drink with a porcelain cup.

“Yes my queen! You’ll never regret choosing her. I will tell her to visit you sooner.” My mother responded delightedly.

I doubt that. Did the real Nemiah agree to this? But knowing how her mother is trying to control her, I guess she didn’t have a choice. I may don’t have any magic but my God is supremely more powerful than them, so I don't have to worry. I will save this girl from their wicked plans.

It became quiet outside. The woman who was called queen by my mother might have left already. I heard footsteps approaching the door and the keys jingled. Someone was trying to unlock the door so I crawled back near the tiger which was still sleeping. The door creaked open and my witch mother came in with a tray of bread and a cup of drink. She looked frigid though she was smiling. She laid the tray on the shabby bedside table and knelt on the floor. She reached her hand to touch my face but I tried to avoid it. What’s with her now?

“You probably heard what queen Dubheasa said about your marriage. You better not disappoint her or both of us will be killed. I know this may seem unfair, but we have to obey her so we can live.” She explained calmly, then she took a deep breath. “But I’ll give you a chance to run away. The spell I’ve put in this room is the best talisman I’ve got. If you’ll be able to destroy it, then I’ll set you free. I don’t know why you hid your powers from me, but knowing that you can now protect yourself, you might have a chance to get away from Dubheasa’s curse.” She smiled bitterly.

My heart relented as I watched her sincere eyes. I actually didn’t have any powers, I’m not sure if the real Nemiah has though. But it seemed that this old woman was also under the threat of that queen. Was that the reason why she’s pressuring her daughter? That witch is really getting on my nerves. I was starting to understand the burden this old woman has. Maybe she also doesn’t want her daughter to suffer but she didn’t have a choice because that witch seemed more powerful over her.

I guess I am not just going to save this girl, I am going to save her mother too from that wicked witch. This woman may be a witch, but I can still sense kindness from her heart and I know that anyone can change no matter how wicked they have become. She still got a chance, I’m confident about it.

My mother has already left the room. I’m still bothered about how I am going to help this girl and her mother to be unleashed from that wicked witch. How powerful is she? I heard Namir yawning beside me and I ended up imitating it. I’m feeling tired for no reason, but I’m actually hungry as well. I tried to get up to have a bite on what my mother had brought for me to eat. My foot still stings but it wasn’t as painful as earlier, maybe it’s starting to heal.I took a loaf of bread and tasted it. My taste buds were disappointed as I chewed disfavorably. It’s not even sweet. I grumbled to myself. But I didn’t have a choice, it was the only food I had. I wasn’t able to finish the small slice so I put it back on the tray. I started to miss my mom’s pastries. I won’t last a day without sugar, I want to eat something sweet! I felt depressed thinking about the foods I wanted but I haven’t so I threw myself on the tattered bed. Heavy dust puffed out from the sheets m

I could see our flashing shadows on the ground as we ran under the brimming moon of the dead night. The air was cold but my heart was filled with drive as we dashed through the shades of the giant trees. I’m not sure where we are heading but I can feel Namir’s confidence. It has been living in this place so it probably knows where we must go. The thrill of riding its back was overwhelming and the minty smell of the bushes were helping me alter my mood.I was amazed when we crossed the lake and Namir just ran above the surface of the water. I lowered my body on the other side to reach the water and I glided my hands through it. Some drizzles splashed through my face and my body flinched as I felt the icy sensation. Namir slowed down when we reached the shore. There were so many fireflies beaming all over the trees. I rode off with my bare feet on the fine sands. I paced slowly to feel my wounded foot and gladly I could move it better.I explored the foreshore and picked som

Amaris idly chewed a breech leaf as he waited for his prey to come up. The crooked branch where he was hiding was a perfect spot for him to see a wide angle of the ground, and the twig spaces were just enough for the moonlight to pass through. He has been waiting for hours already and he thought of hunting for humans instead if he won’t catch any boar tonight. He decided to extend his patience for a few more minutes. Finally he heard rustling of the shrubs below. He squinted his eyes to see where the sound came from. A large pig head peeked out from the thick bushes just behind the tree where he was. He licked his upper lip and gulped as he imagined a mouthful roasted meat that he’ll be having tonight. After calculating its movements, he jumped off and landed on its broad back. “Gotcha!” He gripped his legs around it while it tried to buck him off. It ran around but he let it be since he enjoyed having the short ride. Just a few moments later, the boar’s pac

It was almost an hour when Amaris had left. The night became peaceful and the only sound heard was the calm waves crashing on the shore, and the salty smell of the sea was filling the air. Nemiah had already fallen asleep. She was unaware about the transformation of the tiger she was fond of. Namir turned into a beautiful young man as soon as she had fallen into a deep sleep. His shoulder length ginger hair fell on his face when he nudged his head to peek on Nemiah who was sleeping on his lap. He smiled and his golden eyes glistened under the moonlight. He gently tucked the strands behind her ear. Nemiah winced as his fingers brushed her skin. He remembered what Amaris did to her a while ago, and his face glowered. His closed fists were trembling in anger, annoyed that he wasn’t able to protect her princess from the beast. “If only I was in my human form, I could’ve smashed his face on the ground!” He grumbled to himself as he stared furiously at his closed fists, the

Drops of tears fell on the tactile painting of a beautiful princess smiling gracefully. The grievous queen stroked her fingers on the painting, reminiscing their good old days together. The wicket door creaked and Caius came in to greet her mother.“Was it today?” He asked fretfully, and wiped her tears with his gentle hand. The queen nodded and smiled bitterly. She tried to put back the painting on the wall but Caius took it from her and hung it perfectly.“Do you want to visit her grave tonight? I’ll give you a ride.” He offered. Queen Morrigan shook her head and answered, “Let’s do that after your marriage. I want Nemiah to come with us.” Caius frowned as soon as he heard Nemiah’s name. “Why would you want her to come with us? Her family killed Queen Tamara and her daughter. I don’t understand why you’re so fond of her. I get that you agreed to our marriage because of Dubheasa’s threat, but you seemed to like that little witch.” He prote

Vivar escorted Raven to leave the palace. Caius was still doubting Raven's actions towards them and thought that she had put on a quite convincing show. He presumed that the mother and daughter had a hidden agenda to persuade them and he must catch them red handed beforehand. “Are you still in doubt?” Morrigan barged in the middle of his suspicion. “Why? Did you fall for that facade?” “I’m a mother too. I know she was sincere.” She argued. She reached his son’s face with her gentle warm hand. “Please disregard your hate for witches at the moment. We need to find Nemiah first. And I’m also worried about that child. I don’t know why she ran away but she probably is going through a difficult time right now. So go, Caius. I want you to bring her to the palace first.” She requested earnestly. Caius was hesitant, but seeing her mother’s distinct agony, he finally gave in.“Fine. But we need to be careful. The night sky was gleaming and glittering with dusts of stars. Back in the city, they weren’t this visible because of the city lights. But now my eyes are having a load of the beautiful view of the galaxy, which also reflects into the calm lake. My eyelids were heavy but I decided not to go back to sleep because Amaris might come back and steal our peace again. I’ve already had enough of his menaces. I need to find a safer place than here, though I actually love the tranquility of the ambiance here. I glanced at Namir who was crouching on the ground beside me. I wonder how I could’ve survived without this tiger. At least I know that God has sent me a guardian, and I’m glad it's not a human. The fire was gradually dying out. The breeze becomes colder as the night goes deeper. Fortunately, I have Namir’s warm body to resist the cold temperature. I cuddled my body close to it and was about to fall asleep when I heard a distinct clopping on the ground and horses whining.

"Wait." We were already halfway through the panoramic stairs. My legs were sore and I needed to rest for at least a minute or two. Caius continued ascending without looking back at me. I gently massaged my leg muscles but it noticed that something was missing. Only then I realized that I haven’t seen Namir since I entered the palace. “Where did it go?”“Hey, hurry up.” Caius called.“Have you seen my tiger? It was just with me when I entered the gate.” I asked while searching for the shadow of Namir at the foot of the staircase. “It might have gone back to the woods to hunt. That’s better than chewing on humans here.” He continued to ascend. I glared at his back, not expecting that he would turn around — and he did. He caught my fierce eyes but I smiled at once. “Were you trying to cast a spell on me?” He paused, his forehead was puckered. I shook my head. “I was just staring at the stain on your cloak.” I lied. The queen helped me a lot with all the undergarments. Though it looked so lavish, the weight of the fabrics were a bit uncomfortable. She also fixed my curly hair with golden pins. The messy bun perfectly matched the shape of my face. It looked elegant in a simple way. I didn't know the queen had such a talent for this. I thought it's her maids that style her all the time. "Let me put some tint on your face. You're looking a little pale. Are you sure you're already feeling better?" She took my hand and guided me to the couch to let me sit. "Yes, your highness." The other shadow uttered in a trembling voice."What?! There's no way they've already escaped. How would they know?" The veins on her forehead showed how much she was enraged at the moment. Unconvinced, she sprinted to the village and checked some of the houses herself. She got more furious each time she wrecked the door and no one was inside. The sky was dark and thunderstorms roared synchronizing with the heavy gushing of the rain. It was supposed to be a glorious day for Dubheasa but the weather doesn't seem to cooperate with her plans. She slouched on her throne while distressingly pressing her temples with her fingers. She was waiting for an alternate plan to destroy the village."My queen. The rain still hasn't stopped. Should we wait for it to cease before we proceed with the plan?" One of her soldiers came in to report. Dubheasa threw a sharp glance at him, making his body tremble in fear. He decided to bow his head to avoid the eye contact."Hasn't Jack come back yet?" She asked in a cold voice. Little did she know, the man she's waiting for has already turned into ashes."N-Not yet, your highness." “What is this place?” I jumped off the horse to get a better look at the breathtaking view of the paradise we were currently in. I heard everyone gasp in awe as they entered the portal. We were on concrete pavement and it was leading to a stunning white palace ahead. It was three times bigger and extravagant than that of Queen Morrigan's palace.
