Chapter 3: The Man that was Named Priam

I sat at a café near the school. I also called the rest of the group I accompanied at the library yesterday. I just ordered a cup of green tea.

Placed on my table, I help the small plate the supported the tea cup. I sipped the tea, obviously hearing the sipping sound of it. Then, I just laid back the fluffy, sofa-like chair, and felt the nice ambiance.

It was an unusual morning from the time I woke up. I just can't forget what I dreamed not so long. That assassination done at the library was impossible to take place. The library was as new as a newborn baby. It wasn't officially opened for public because it was still the vacation month.

The cafeteria's door opened. Even if I was at the corner where the orderings happened, I can still see they were Aaron and Nathan.

"Hey, Aze!" Aaron greeted with a smile, evading the chairs that were clattered all over the café.

"Boss Harp!" Nathan mildly shouted. He used to call me with than nickname. "You're alone?"

I just replied back by smiling. I crossed my legs and sit back, to my relaxation. My sky-blue polo was stretched by that sudden move. I have two buttons left unbuttoned, that was revealingly opened because of my stance.

"How's your day?"

The two sat down in front of me. Aaron was wearing a white hoodie, and a small, black short. "I can't sleep." he replied. I can feel that he has a raspier voice texture than before.

"Where's the girls?" Nathan asked sardonically. I can't explain, but why is he so happy? He kept smiling at the very time he entered the café.

"They sure gone late." I just chuckled before sipping the cup of tea. "You know how intricate the girls dressed. They mind every details—"

Priam...

I was dumbstruck! That name popped up of my head again.. Who the hell is he?!

"Hey, Aze.." Aaron abruptly said. "..I'm just curious on how you know what's inside those confidential files? Did your mom told you that?"

I bowed my head, and put my elbows at our rounded table. "Actually.." I said with hesitation. "..I don't know why!"

The two was left into a shock. Nathan's smile gradually faded away, as Aaron surprisingly chuckled.

"Don't you lie, Aze. Just tell me why!"

I was moved. I sat properly, not even placing my back at the chair. "Aaron, I am totally unaware. That answer came on my mind that instant!"

Aaron's face was filled with fury. After all, he was the hot tempered guy in the group. "Just say that you want all of us to be harmed! You only care for yourself!"

He stood and gripped my collar, lifting me up! I just yanked his hand that was gripping my shirt, irritating him. I sat, and stared at him sharply. "If you don't want to be harmed, you can leave now! I'm not forcing you to be here!"

Aaron silently sat, too. Nathan was just staring at us. Few of the countable costumers have were staring at us also. Creating a fiasco in a public place sure was a shame.

"If you wanted to risk your life, then thank you." I added up. "I'm not forcing everyone. I just can't stand up and ignore what I am dreaming. There's something wrong at our school!"

The costumers finally neglected us, that left me to heave a sigh.

Aaron opened his mouth, readied to reply, but the arrival of Trixie beat him off with it. "Hey! Fighting again, as always?" she greeted.

She wore a pale pink and fluffy shirt, pair with a white miniskirt. It lengthened up to her thigh. She also tied up into a messy bun, where lots of hair leftover was pointing unidirectionally. But, in fact, it suited her. It made her more beautiful.

She stopped once she was near our table. "Have a seat," Nathan said in a calm voice. I didn't noticed his hooded T-shirt. Its torso was orange, and the sleeves and hood were white. He wore a brown short.

Trixie sat in the left edge. Her fluffy shirt has a long sleeves that almost covering her fists. "So, what's the matter?"

"We will return to the library." I replied, as Aaron was still obviously furious. "For sure, that blind man wasn't there. Because he only appeared every solar eclipse."

"But I watched at the TV that this week, a unusual Solar Eclipse will happen." Trixie replied.

"Are you saying that we will now search for the files?" Nathan asked, he was looking like an innocent boy because of his unawareness.

"Yes." I said in a low voice. "But we will now search who is that blind man."

"I dreamed of that man, and my mom called him Priam.. But still, I don't know if that blind man was actually named Priam.." I continued.

"In my dream, my mom and her co-staffs have planned and assassinated the blind man. They also say something about a secret." I added up. "So, I have a theory that something malicious happened inside our school that made the blind man that angry... to the point he was ghosting the school."

My head suddenly ached, feeling the same spinning sensation before. I saw the blind man lying down the library as I have dreamed of. There was only him who's left inside.

There was a gun. Probably mom's gun she left. The blind man's right hand hardly tried to reach the gun. A couple of trials and attempts made, until he successfully reached the gun and held it tight.

He was bathing in his own blood, as he tried picking up a book placed on the floor. It was old and big. He tried to sit, hardly moving because of his blood lost.

He opened the book. There's printed sentences that was small enough for me to see. He flipped the page into its middle, and tried using his index finger filled with blood as his pen, writing..

"From this very day, all of the relatives, sons and daughters, grandchildren, and all of the upcoming generations of them.. will be killed. I'll kill of them, with the same way their ancestors killed me. And I won't stop until I fulfill—"

He was unable to continue what he was about to write, as he fell down the floor. He tried to sign the bloody letters he wrote.

Hardly trying his very best to end the note, he managed to signed the paper with a shocking name, as his opened eyes gradually closed —Priam Montgomery!

She shouted, and tried kicking Aaron, but Aaron ran and escaped the room. She sighed and turn her face on me. "So you aren't leaving?"I looked at her in contempt. As the priest's muffled blessing came to an end, the pall-bearers, unhitching the ropes from the now invisible handles with just a fraction too much haste, started back up the hill towards the church, followed by the priest with his own large black umbrella, and the two rain-soaked altar-boys who hurried ahead with little pretense of reverence. The mourners, a group of seven or eight rather shabbily-dressed men of his father's generation, ambled over to Liam and Francie and solemnly shook Liam's hand one by one, looking him up and down curiously as they did so, telling him that they were "sorry for his trouble". Liam thanked each of them for coming and for his kind wishes, but in reality all that he felt towards them was a mild unease, mixed with guilt at his own lack of emotion throughout the entire ceremon

He died in 1956, the year that the Russian tanks rolled in to Budapest to crush the Hungarian Revolution. Of course the Hungarian Revolution was of no concern to me, I was nine years old and what I cared about was my new black Raleigh Junior bicycle, the TV set with the huge mahogany cabinet and the miniscule, blurry and often rolling black-and-white picture, and the Glenalough Adelphi, the local cinema that was owned and managed by Satan, where my friends and I spent every Saturday afternoon, transported to other lands, other times and other lives by the magic of the flickering screen. The idea of a cinema being owned and operated by Satan was one that must have appealed mightily to the local Roman Catholic hierarchy, it may even have been them who gave him the nick-name, but I suspect that it emerged more from his habit of running up and down the cin

Chapter 11: Bottom FeedersIt had turned out to be as good a morning as the weather forecast had promised. Olaf's first glance through the porthole on wakening revealed a clear blue sky with barely a wisp of cloud, a sultry heat-mist already forming that made the distant shore ripple while the sea itself remained majestically still, with only the barely perceptible rough-patch marking the reef's closest approach to the surface. They had anchored not long after sunrise, and while Olaf and Henrietta had slept, the Spanish-speaking Captain and Olaf's young safety diver Morris had studied the echo-sonde traces, eaten a light breakfast, and assembled all the equipment neatly on the rear deck ready for the dive. Olaf's camera gear and lights were neatly laid out behind his BCD and wet-suit. By the time he appeared from his cabin, having kissed Henrietta good morning (but, with an effort of will, left it at that) there was nothing more to do but suit-up and explain to Morris exactly what he

She’d warned him it would be a long session. He couldn’t be the one to talk, he’d only just got over the headache from old Barrington’s retirement party. He waited in a pleasant state of semi-consciousness for the sound of her feet on the stairs, water running in the bathroom, the rustle of undressing, the shock of cold air as she pulled back the duvet to climb in beside him.But as the drowsy minutes slipped by there was no further sound from downstairs. Maybe she was making herself a cup of coffee to clear her head. Those hen parties could be pretty wild affairs, he had been told. He opened his eyes and glanced at the clock again. Forty minutes had passed. He became fully awake. Forty minutes? It doesn’t take forty minutes to make a cup of coffee. He sat up and listened hard, but all he could hear was the br

"I'd driven my girlfriend out to the beach in my old Mustang, and she got out and was walking around. I was sitting in the drivers seat and I thought it would be kinda funny to shoot a firework at her out of the window.I had a box of 6 inch rockets with me so I aimed one at her and lit it. Only then did I realise that the electric window was wound up. I couldn't wind it down because the key wasn't in the ignition. I suppose I should have opened the door and got out, but by the time I'd thought of that, the rocket had gone off and was whooshing round and round inside the car. It was awful. Actually she was wrong, it's less than that. Three months would be close to my record. She asked me if there was something wrong, some reason why I wasn't happy here. I gave her the usual story. Chapter 28: TELLING TALESHave you ever wondered why human beings tell stories? Has there ever been a human culture that didn’t?There is something compulsive about this “narrative drive” in human beings. We can no more resist it than we can suppress the impulse to breathe or to walk on two legs. We are story-telling animals in the same way that wolves are pack animals. Not only are we story-telling animals, it is our story-telling skills that have (to paraphrase Reginald Perrin’s boss CJ) got us where we are today.Suppose for a moment that we did not tell any stories - that we constructed no narrative to accompany our experience. What would we see when we looked out into the world? All that we would “see” (or more accurately, experience) would be raw data. A meaningless flux of light and dark, colour and shape, movement and stillness. It’s only when we start to interpret, to tell a story about the raw data, that we can perceive the world at all. That undulating mass of greenish blue

Chapter 27: THE MIND'SThis is a bit of philosophizing of the kind that an academic philosopher might do in the pub after the seminar. Philosophizing with a claw hammer, so to speak. Ever since seeing "2001: A Space Odyssey" in the late 1960s I have been fascinated by the idea of artificial intelligence (or "machine intelligence" or "electronic intelligence" or "machine consciousness" or any of the other names by which it goes). I wrote a number of short stories about it, eventually a novel called "SIRAT", and more recently was invited to deliver a lecture on it (a very basic introduction to the subject) at an American university. I can't claim to be a genuine worker in the field but I am a very enthusiastic amateur. The notion of creating some kind of a machine that can think, a conscious computer presumably, collides head on with a genuine and deep philosophical problem. The oldest one in Western philosophy, perhaps. The relationship between the inner world of the mind in which we a
