Chloe

The following week is busier than I expected, however I managed to set up a new routine for both me and Ellie. As a toddler, it'd be bad for her not to have some sort of routine, and I am glad I got to give her a sense of normalcy after a few bustling days in the city. I am happy to have my mother's support during all of this, otherwise I wouldn't know what to do by myself. I am definitely not ready to put Ellie in a school or a daycare center yet, especially knowing Mateo is still lurking around.

The mafia wife duties aren't easy either, and they sure consume a lot of my time. Every day I leave dinner ready for when Tony gets home from work, knowing he wouldn't prepare himself anything after midnight. It’s also a guilty pleasure of mine. The way he seemed to have loved my food the first day I prepared it made my heart warm and beat frantically in my chest. I sort of want to do that for him. After what he did to protect me and Ellie, it is the least I can do.

TonyAs much as I hate to admit, the married man's life isn't as hard as I imagined it would be. Not for the reasons I expected anyway. Sure, it fucking kills me to have Chloe living under the same roof as me and not being able to touch her, or get close to her whatsoever, but her presence–and Ellie's for that matter–is like a balm to the soul. One I didn't realize I needed. Not to mention the delicious food Chloe leaves prepared for me every night. She doesn't have to, and I made sure to tell her that, but she makes it anyway. I can't say I don't like it though. She might not be doing it because she wants to make me feel good or anything, but my ego is not that big to refuse a nice meal after a hard day of work.Today is one of those days, and my mouth is watering just by thinking of what I might find when I get home.I'm currently in my office at the deli, surrounded by Armando and some of my men who seem to have nothing better to do than smoke cigars and play poker on my coffee tab

  • Indebted to the Mafia King   Confrontation

ChloeAfter Rocco leaves me at home, I get inside and prepare a nice, hot bath since Ellie is still with my mom and I have the entire place just for myself. I can't remember the last time I’ve been by myself, so I plan on making the best of it.I rush to my bathroom and gather all the expensive products my mother made me buy while we were shopping, saying I should take care of myself more. I use all the salts and oils I can find, and get inside the tub. I don't know how long it takes, but at some point, I end up falling asleep and only wake up when my phone rings with a message from my mom asking if Ellie can sleep over with her tonight. At first, I'm hesitant. I'm not used to sleeping away from Ellie, but I trust my mom and I know she has bodyguards stationed around her house too, so it shouldn't be a problem. It'd be nice to have some time off to myself as well, so I answer her with a 'yes'. I need to learn to chill out a bit, otherwise I'll become paranoid. More than I already am

  • Indebted to the Mafia King   Date Night

ChloeI never expected that being in a ferry heading to the city with Tony for a date would be the way I'd end this day. My life was never predictable before, but being asked on a date by him was never a thought that crossed my mind. Sure, he didn't have to say it outright that it was all just for show, and I didn't feel the need to clarify with him either, but I can't help but wonder if there's more to it than he's letting on.I'm probably kidding myself, I know. But as we stand side by side, leaning on the railing and overlooking the moonlight reflecting on the water, my mind goes back to the day we met two years ago in this same place, and my heart betrays me. Again.I still remember exactly how I felt when I saw him. When he shattered my phone and ruined my purse. And when I boldly sort of invited him on a date. I was so intoxicated by his presence back then that I still don't know what came over me.We never talked about that day, and I wonder if he still thinks about it as frequ

  • Indebted to the Mafia King   Heating Up

ChloeMy date with Tony turns out to be lighter and funnier than I imagined it would be. I was still tense and nervous, but not because he purposely caused it, but mostly because I can't control my own feelings. But the wine helped me to loosen up a little around him, and by the time we return to the house, I'm feeling much less stiff and robotic around him.Tony has this dry humor that I love. I love the way he purses his lips when something isn't to his taste, or the way he is so smooth while talking to people, almost like he knows how good he is to influence them into doing what he needs or wants from them.He told me a little bit about how life as the mafia boss has been tougher than he imagined it would be, and I felt sorry for him. Like me, Tony grew up in this life, so I don't think he had much of a choice, the same way I hadn't.It's past midnight by the time we arrive back at Staten Island. I feel slightly drowsy, but other than that, I feel great. "Thank you for taking me o

  • Indebted to the Mafia King   Burning

ChloeTwo Years AgoI had my fair share of drinks tonight, but being with Tony was so easy and fun that I couldn't force myself to stop. It had been a coincidence to find him in the ferry, and I had been bold enough to sort of ask him out. I didn't know what came over me, but when I realized, I had already done it. When the drinks started to flow freely and into my system, I loosened up and my inhibitions were damned. I lost track of time, talking and flirting with him, sharing what life had been like in Miami, making sure to keep the gross details out of it. I didn't need to remind myself of the nightmares haunting my life now. Not when I felt so happy and carefree.By the time I realize the bar is closing, a gloomy feeling comes over me. I don't want this night to end. And I don't want to separate from Tony, going back to my stupid, hateful life. His hand warmly grabs mine over the bar counter, his fingers caressing my palm and causing chills to run down my spine. • Indebted to the Mafia King   Undeniable Similarities

TonyMy fake date with Chloe was not what I was expecting. It was surprisingly great. Not that I didn't think I could have fun with Chloe, because I know I can. She is quieter than most women I know, but her presence is so addicting, I feel almost obsessed whenever I'm with her. I want to do everything to make her talk more, to laugh more. Whenever I managed to get a smile from her last night, it felt like my heart would explode. Now, more than ever, I want to do everything in my power to give her the life she deserves. I want to be responsible for putting a smile on her face every day.And that’s why I sent her to bed as soon as I put my eyes on her this morning. She looked…awful. Slightly flushed, her eyes deep, with dark circles under them, not to mention her pale skin. When I showed up in her room with a tray filled with coffee and some fruits a few minutes later, she was already asleep, so I didn't want to wake her up. I ordered something to be delivered for her to have lunch lat

  • Indebted to the Mafia King   The Truth

ChloeI open my eyes slowly and stretch my arms over my head, noticing the darkness enveloping my room. There is a fading beam of moonlight shining through the open curtains, but apart from that, it is pitch black around me. I look at my nightstand clock, realizing it's almost 7pm. It takes me a few seconds to remember why I'm in bed at this time of the day. What the hell happened to me? I don't feel sick at all, just slightly exhausted, but I simply blacked out after Tony ordered me to return to bed because I seemingly had a fever. I might have been under a lot of stress lately without even noticing it. With everything that has happened—my father's death, moving back to New York, breaking free from Mateo, the sudden fake marriage with Tony, and me having to confront my own feelings for him–it all might have unconsciously taken its toll on my health. With a sudden start, I remember the party my mother was supposed to throw today. It should be happening already. However, Tony did ment

  • Indebted to the Mafia King   Acceptance

TonyI couldn't stay at home. After I saw the pictures of my mom and realized that Ellie was, in fact, my daughter, my entire world collapsed. I couldn't think straight. I couldn't understand what made Chloe keep this huge secret from me for years. How could she live under the same roof as me now, with our daughter, and not tell me the truth, not tell me Ellie was also mine?I had missed so much. And the worst part was that it wasn't even my choice. I wasn't given one from the start. She had chosen that for me. No matter how hard I tried to find a reasonable explanation as to why Chloe did this to me, I always ended up hitting a dead end. There is no excuse, there is no reason… Why would she allow someone like Mateo to be around her and Ellie when she could have come to me sooner? Why did she think she could keep such a secret from me? What gave her the right?I felt overwhelmed with emotions—feelings I didn't want to feel. I didn't want to hate Chloe, or question her reasons, but i

*Heidi*Going after Cal was a mistake. I knew it would be, but I still did it anyway. What was I thinking? What was I even expecting to happen? That if I came and asked him to drop his entire life and career for me and he’d do it?Ha! What a joke.Even if I mean as much to him as he says I do, giving up something you’ve been building your whole life is hard. I should know better than that. I wouldn’t give up on my life and dreams either if he asked me to. So, why am I feeling so heartbroken? Why do I feel so sad, so left out?I storm out of his office with tears blurring my vision. His scent is all over me, and my lips are still tingling from our kisses. No matter how much I want to turn back and run into his arms, I know I can’t do it. This is it. This was the last straw, the confirmation I needed that we’re indeed over. For good.“Miss Heidi, is everything okay?” someone asked from behind me as I walked out of the bar. It was rude on my part to ignore whoever it was, but I couldn’

*Cal*Tony takes a little longer than I’d like with the cartel bastards the Saints captured. By the time his men haul in two guys who are, I’d say, unrecognizable, I’m basically digging a hole in the floor with all my anticipation and agitation, having spent the last hour pacing. The guy I cuffed in the basement looks up from his spot in the corner, and his eyes widen when he sees two more of his people have also been taken by us. He doesn’t have any strength in him to say anything, but he’s been pretty quiet anyway compared to some of the smart-mouthed assholes I’ve beaten the shit out before.“Hey,” Tony greets me, walking behind his guys who are now restraining the newly kidnapped men to chairs, away from the first one. “Brought you a little present.”I grunt. “After the day I just had, you have no idea how glad I am to see them,” I tell him, darting a deathly glance to the newcomers and cracking my knuckles.“I owe you already. I’m glad I could return the favor for once,” Tony say

*Cal*I consider going after Heidi. Following her upstairs, grabbing her by the arm, turning her to me and crashing my lips into hers, hoping she can feel how much I love her and how much I’m willing to fight for us.But that’d be a lie.And also unfair to her.Because if I truly was willing to do anything for her, I’d accept turning my back on the mafia and the Irish Kings without a question. I wouldn’t hesitate. I wouldn’t consider anything other than having her by my side. But I can’t.I can’t give her what she wants. I can’t promise her something I’m not ready to do. Therefore, I’d rather she hates me now, while she still has any feelings for me, then watch her fall out of love with me while we are together. That’d hurt me more than anything.Realization begins to sink in. We’re truly over now. There’s no turning back, no saving this relationship that’s barely even started. I try to convince myself that this is for the best. Heidi will finally be safe away from me. She can return

*Cal*“What does this mean?” I want to know. I need to know. “What did you come here to talk to me about?”Heidi stares at me for a bit until she inhales sharply and turns her gaze to the ceiling. She is clearly uncomfortable with my questions, but I can’t move on not knowing what’s going through her mind.Does the fact that she came here to have sex with me in my office mean that she forgives me? That she’s willing to put everything behind us and start anew? That she belongs to me completely, no questions asked?Knowing her, I doubt that's what it means. But I need to hear her say it. I need to understand what she’s thinking. Otherwise, I might misinterpret all of it and ruin everything–again.“Heidi?” I call softly when she doesn’t answer me.She looks at me again, her beautiful, big eyes watching me intently. I push her hair out of her face, and lean forward to kiss her lips. It’s a soft kiss, but I try to convey all of my feelings for her through it.“I don’t know what this means,

  • Indebted to the Mafia King   Sex and Doubt

*Cal*I spent most of the night and the morning trying to get something out of the cartel’s man I found lurking outside Heidi’s building. Anything useful at all that will help me put an end to all of this nonsense. The interrogation took several hours, and I was so fucking mad that I didn’t let any of my men deal with him even though I was exhausted. It was ugly, to say the least, and I split my knuckles multiple times as I tried to force some words out of his mouth. But in the end, I didn’t get much. The guy eventually murmured some addresses to me, but so far, my men only hit dead ends with the investigation on the De La Cruz cartel. At some point during the night, Tony showed up and helped me a little bit with the interrogation, and then he left, saying he would ask his men to start investigating as well.So far, I haven’t heard from him.The sun was rising in the sky by the time I came to my office. I sat down in my chair to clear my mind, hoping I could think about what I heard

*Heidi*“Are you sure you don’t need me to come with you to talk to this guy?” my grandfather offers for the millionth time in the past hour. “I’m positive I can convince him to sell me the shop at half the price he’s demanding.”I chuckle, shaking my head.“I’m good, Grandpa. If he doesn’t accept my offer, I’m sure I can find another great place somewhere else. As much as I love this one, I’m not willing to pay more than it is worth.”Grandpa nods, finally conceding.“Well, I have to get going,” I say, getting up from the chair. “You guys have to get ready for dinner, and I stayed for too long already. I don’t want them to forbid me to come visit you next time.”“They wouldn’t dare,” Grandma murmurs, standing and pulling me into a tight hug. It instantly makes me feel like I can fight the entire world. Her embrace charges my battery, and I feel renewed. Determined. Ready for whatever the world throws my way.“Thanks, Granny. I love you,” I tell her. Then I pull away from her to hug m

  • Indebted to the Mafia King   Comforting Talk

*Heidi*Despite my hopes that I would drop into a deep slumber and not wake at all during the night, my dreams were haunted by faceless men following Cal and I around town. Inevitably, one or the both of us got shot in each of my nightmares. In one of those dreams, these men get to my grandparents. That’s when I wake up sweating and unable to fall asleep again.I get up from bed and make some coffee before the sun is even up. After that, I grab my laptop and start searching for shops to buy again since my meeting with the owner of the Greenwich Village store yesterday wasn’t successful. The guy wasn’t willing to budge on lowering the price, and since I don’t even have the insurance money yet, I couldn’t commit to something I couldn’t afford.I spend the entire morning on real estate websites. However, none of them really stick out to me. I don’t particularly love anything I see, and by the time the clock strikes eleven in the morning, I’m tired of looking at the computer screen, my ey

  • Indebted to the Mafia King   Hands Tied

*Heidi*As soon as Cal’s out the door, I’m left desolated, as if I’m drifting. My mind is numb, and I’m momentarily frozen in place, unsure of what to do. Nothing makes sense and, for a moment, I think I might be dreaming that all of this is just a weird fantasy, some sort of illusion I created in my head. How can Cal–this sweet, sexy, and kind human being–be a criminal? It’s absurd…Lifting up from the floor where I’ve been static for a couple of minutes, I walk toward the window, eager for some fresh air. I pull it open, breathing in the cold evening air. It feels like a wake up call, the wind brushing against my face, drying up the tears streaming down my cheeks. The night is so beautiful, the moon shining so bright up in the sky. It contrasts sharply with the chaos and the destruction that I feel within my heart. I’ve never felt this broken before in my life.Maybe when my parents died, yes, but I was too young to remember exactly what it felt like. But now that I’m mature enough,

Thankfully, there’s no one with me as I head downstairs after being told to leave her home, so I’m left alone with my anger and frustration.I should’ve seen this coming. It was bound to happen from the beginning. Of course, she would find out. How did I ever think I could keep it hidden from her forever?I could’ve treaded more carefully, but as soon as I heard her saying over the phone that she thought she was being followed, I saw red. I rushed to her apartment, not even trying to control my feelings and emotions. I was all over the place, all sorts of scenarios running through my mind until I could make sure that she was all right. She immediately picked up that I was hiding something from her. Once I decided to come clean with her, everything just poured out of me, and everything I’d been struggling to keep from her was completely exposed. As soon as I get to the building exit, I hesitate, hal
