Damien smirked, leaning back in his chair as if accepting her challenge. “I’m into obscure mythology and folklore. You know, stuff most people wouldn’t bother reading about.”

“Really?” Matilda’s eyes lit up, feeling a connection immediately. “That’s so cool! I love mythology, too. It’s like looking into a world we’ll never really understand, but it’s so fascinating to try.”

Damien looked surprised for a moment, then laughed softly, his demeanor relaxing. “I don’t meet a lot of people who think like that.”

“Well,” Matilda said, standing directly across from him without really thinking about it, “you just did.”

For the first time, Damien’s smile seemed genuine, his eyes softening as he looked at her. “Guess I did.”
