"To what?" Kristi frowned.

"I know your schedule. You're off twenty-four starting tomorrow. Dinner. Tomorrow night."

"Dinner?" She stared at him. In the middle of a fire scene, he was asking her to dinner?

She studied his face, the navy-blue eyes with the indecently thick lashes, the late day scruff just sprouting on his jaw, the lock of midnight-black hair that had escaped his patrol hat. He was most definitely good looking, but there was also something else there, a heat and an intensity that woke up parts of her body she'd been keeping in cold storage.

"Great!" He grinned, as if she'd said yes. "Pick you up at seven." He waved as he ran back to help one of the other cops with a traffic problem.

Kristi stared after him. Now what was she supposed to do? She didn't even have his cell phone number to tell him it was all a big mistake.

Go ahead! The little devil in her brain whispered to her. It's about time.

She might have been on a dating diet but she had to admit, every time she saw Patrick her appetite perked up. She hadn't allowed herself to relax enough to date anyone for such a long while, not since- She shut down that line of thought. Should she break down and take a chance here?

This is so the wrong thing for me to do. My luck hasn't gotten better overnight. I'll just politely tell him no. Again.

"Hey, Kristi." Jared nudged her. "We need to finish packing up our stuff. You can dream about lover boy on the way back to the station."

"I'm not dreaming about anyone," she snapped.

"Uh-huh."

They had just finished putting everything back in the ambo and she was climbing into the cab when Patrick raced over to her again, holding out his cell.

"Put your information in here. Seven okay with you?"

"Uh, sure. Seven. Great." She took the cell phone he handed her and entered her address and phone number. Of course, now it was there to be used again. And maybe again. The feelings rippling inside her were a combination of fear and anticipation.

"See you then." He winked at her and hustled back to work.

He watched from across the street, big sunglasses obscuring most of his face, the bill from a ball cap taking care of most of the rest of it. The crowd had been big enough that he could blend into it and not call attention to himself. They always came out in droves for big fires. The bigger the fire, the bigger the crowd.

He managed to keep in the background yet still have a good vantage point from which to watch. When she pulled up in the ambo she drove with her partner, his heart raced in anticipation of seeing her. And when she jumped down from the vehicle's cab, his cock got instantly hard. Not even those sexless jumpsuits she wore could disguise her luscious body. He let his mind run wild imagining her curves beneath the thick fabric and had to clench his fists and shove them into his pockets to keep from doing something that would embarrass him.

He wondered if she knew he set these blazes just for her. Kind of an homage to her skills, as it were. And yet another chance for him to see her, even if it wasn't up close and personal. He could admire her from afar, drinking in the sight of her and watching her skillful movement.

He took pictures of her at work, each image so precious to him. At night, when he lay in his bed, naked, he'd close his hand around his cock, run through the pictures like a slideshow while he brought himself to orgasm. If only he could do that to her in person. If only he could show her how much she meant to him and how good he could be to her.

He'd had occasion to be in the fire station for work twice in the past couple of weeks but she'd only been there for one of them. Even so, that one time he'd drunk his fill of her, watching her when she was there between callouts, drinking in the sight of her like a thirsty man with water.

Kristi!

He loved the sound of her name. Driving by himself during the day, he often said it aloud, loving the way it rolled off his tongue. The sound of it so sweet and soft that he'd say it over and over.

He loved setting these fires for her. Watching her work always made him hard as concrete. She was just so efficient about it. Go figure he'd think it was sexy to watch her fit someone with an oxygen mask. Or clean and bandage burns and other wounds. The jumpsuit she always wore wasn't designed to show off her figure, but he could still see the sweet, sexy curve of her ass. He wanted so badly to be able to run his palm over it, feel the roundness of her.

Shit! He'd better stop or he'd embarrass himself right out here on the street.

When he saw that cop go over and talk to her, he had to force back the anger that rose up inside him. What the fuck did that asshole want? He should be paying attention to business instead of fooling around with Kristi. His Kristi. Or she would be, soon enough. He gritted his teeth the entire time, sending a steady stream of silent curses toward the man. And the way he touched her arm when they spoke, the way he tilted his head. He could not let anything happen between them and get in the way of his plans.

All too soon, she and her partner were finished treating everyone who needed it and began packing up their gear. The firefighters were far from finished with their job, but the need for paramedics and EMTs was over. He never took his eyes from her as she climbed behind the wheel of her vehicle and drove off.

It was stupid to be so nervous. Kristi had repeated that to herself a hundred times already. It was just a date. Maybe not even a real date. Maybe just dinner with a friend. Oh, who the hell was she kidding? The heat in Patrick's eyes when he looked at her was a clear indication this was a lot more than that. They'd danced around this for weeks now. The casual touches, the intense looks they'd exchanged, despite her best intentions. The sexual awareness that seemed to wrap around them like a thick cloud whenever they were together. She hadn't felt this way for four years and hadn't ever expected to feel it again. Remembered pain had been her strongest sensation. This all seemed to just creep up on her, and now, without any conscious decision on her part, they were taking things to the next level. Tonight was just dinner, but what would happen afterwards? For four years, she hadn't let a man get any closer than a platonic relationship. Friendship. And here she was, stepping into treac

At the moment Kristi considered phoning Patrick to call it off, the doorbell rang and her time for chickening out was gone. She grabbed her blazer and her purse, pulled open the door...and stared. Patrick Hayes was good looking in his policeman's uniform. He was good looking in the jeans and sweaters he wore at McNally's. But there was good looking and then there was good looking! The man in her doorway might as well have had sex stamped across his forehead. He wore a blue collared shirt, open at the throat, chinos, and a navy blazer. The shirt picked up the deep-blue of his eyes, eyes that had little flames of heat dancing in them and a look that said, I want to lick you all over.Kristi shivered, the walls of her pussy pulsed and throbbed, and her nipples hardened as a little tingle shot through them. It had been far too long since she'd gotten that feeling from a man rather than from her stash of toys. She had to mentally restrain herself from licking her lips.It seemed, however

Kristi was momentarily stunned when he lifted her in his arms and carried her to her bedroom. She managed to reach out and flip the light switch just inside the doorway, turning on the bedside lamps and casting the room in a warm, golden glow. The moment he set her on her feet his mouth was on her again. This time he slid from her lips down her neck, placing a row of tiny kisses as he unbuttoned her blouse and tugged it from her slacks. When he spotted the lace-and-silk bra with the little bow in the center, his eyes widened. Humming a little sound of satisfaction, he trailed more kisses, this time across the upper swell of each breast. She shivered at the hot, wet feel of his mouth, arching her back to give him greater access. Her nipples begged for his attention, and as if he heard their silent plea, he closed his mouth over one pebbled tip, sucking it into his mouth, bra and all.The moan that drifted from her mouth made him suck all the harder, until she was afraid she might come

Kristie locked her gaze with his and clutched at his arms as the head of his shaft prodded at her entrance. Then, one inch at a time, pulling back and pushing forward, he thrust until he was fully inside her. And god! He just filled up every single inch of her."That's it." His voice was raw. Hoarse. And his face was flushed with passion. "Keep your eyes on me. We'll take it nice and slow."He did exactly that, drawing back until only the head of his cock was inside her then driving forward with a slow steady motion. Little by little, her body relaxed to accept him, the soaked walls of her pussy adjusting to his size and length. Slow and steady, he'd told her, and that was exactly what he did. Except, as he continued his in and out strokes, her body began to accommodate him more and, pretty soon, slow and steady wasn't enough. She wound her legs around his waist and dug her heels into the small of his back, trying to urge him to move at a greater speed."You don't want to move fast

Kristi dreamed she was on a tropical beach, the sun bathing her in its warmth. She felt warm inside and out, pleased and happy. Then, without warning, the sun disappeared taking the heat with it, and a chill skittered over her skin."No," she moaned. "Come back."The sun kissed her shoulder then her cheek. The sun? Kissed her?"Sorry, sleepyhead. We don't all have the day off."What? Wait...She pried her eyes open to see an astonishing pair of midnight-blue ones staring back at her. She blinked, and the rest of Patrick's face came into focus. He was crouched beside the bed, watching her. When he saw she was awake, he nudged her over enough so he could sit down next to her. With his fingers, he gently stroked the strands of hair back from her cheek. She realized her warmth had come from Patrick's body wrapped around her, and the absence occurred when he slid out of bed."Come back," she teased in a sleep-filled voice, and she reached out an arm to him."Some of us have to go to

Patrick had hoped to catch Keith before the start of his shift, but he'd barely made it in time. Instead, he'd managed to get a minute with him at the end of the day. He could have left the man a note to wait for him, but he wanted this to appear as casual as possible. So he hung around the locker room waiting for Keith to get off shift and come in to change. He had about given up when the door to the locker room opened."Hey, how's it going?" Keith gave him a light punch on the shoulder. "How's your partner?""Good. He's good.""I had hoped we could ride together," Keith told him, "but the assignments had already been made.""No problem." He fiddled around with his stuff for a moment before closing his locker and standing up. "Say, what's the deal with Kristi Gregory?""The deal?" Keith stopped in the middle of stripping off his uniform. "In what way?" Then a slow grin spread over his face. "Why, you sly dog. You interested in her?""What if I am?" He tried not to sound too defensive.

  • Incendiary   Chapter 14

Kristi sat between Hank O'Korn and Jared as the people on her shift gathered around the big table in the lounge. Captain Stewart stood at the head of the table with a man she recognized as arson investigator Dan Varney. She knew he'd addressed the others late yesterday. Both men had hard, serious expressions on their faces."I'm going to let Dan handle this meeting," Captain Stewart said. "He needs no introduction to all of you, and you're aware he's here because we have a serious problem."Everyone was silent while they waited for Dan to begin. They had all worked the three recent terrible fires, and arson had been on everyone's mind."I'd like to have better news for you," he began, "but, unfortunately, we've determined that these fires were deliberately set. Arson. What we call, as you know, incendiary. They all began on the first floor, in the back, in an empty room. Piles of old cloths and newspapers were used, covered with paint thinner, which is a dangerous incendiary." He looke

Kristi took a sip of beer and leaned back in her chair. She was seated at one of the big round tables at McNally's with several of the guys from her shift plus Patrick, Keith, and two other cops from their precinct. The topic, as it had been for the past few nights, was the rash of fires in their area."Dan Varney's all over this one," Brad Hawkins said.Kenny MacMillan, another firefighter from her shift, nodded."He's one of the best arson investigators in the entire Dallas Fire-Rescue organization. If there's anything to be found, he'll be the one to find it.""He said he's going to have someone taking pictures from now on. He doesn't think this guy is finished at all." Brad shook his head. "Incendiary fires scare all of us. They're all bad, but I've got a feeling this guy is setting them for more than just the thrill. Don't ask me why, I just have that sense."Patrick had his arm draped casually across Kristi's shoulders. Now he tightened it and pulled her closer to him."You

Sam swallowed a smile. If she knew everything he was thinking she might just get up and run like hell. Then again, maybe not. He sure hoped not because he'd been waiting a long time for just what was happening now and he intended to make the most of it. "I've already had one shower," he said, "but I sure could use another. How about you?""I believe so." She grinned, still a little breathless. He winked. "Shower with a friend and save water."Misa was stunned when he led her into the bathroom. She'd expected something similar to hers, but Sam had ripped his apart and made it into something spectacular. The vanity was a solid piece of marble with the sink carved into it. Elegant brushed steel faucets rose from the back. At one end of the rectangle sat a tub with jets that identified it as a Jacuzzi. At the other was a shower that had Misa's jaw dropping when Sam slid open the door. The small tiles had the look of granite and showerheads had been built into the walls and the ceili

Misa lifted her arms so Sam could pull her thin sweater over her head. His gaze fastened on her bra and the hard nipples poking against the satin fabric. Without a word he lowered his head and closed his mouth around one of them, biting gently before tugging it into his mouth. She moaned as heat streaked through her right to her cunt. Her panties were so wet she could feel the moisture on the inside of her thighs. The more he sucked on her nipple the wetter she got. When he turned his attention to her other nipple she slid her hands between them and squeezed his cock convulsively. A harsh animalistic sound burst from his throat. His nimble fingers unfastened her bra and he peeled it from her body before turning his attention to her slacks. Even as he unfastened the button and lowered the zipper he returned his mouth to her nipples, licking them and tracing the edges of her aureoles. Reluctantly she released his shaft and clutched the hard muscles of his arms for support. Toeing off

The hysterical woman turned to look at the fireman and ran toward the ladder. It seemed to Misa it took forever for him to reach the bottom. She snapped shot after shot of him with the baby, handing the baby to the mother, the mother reaching up to hug him, the other men congratulating him. The crowd cheered wildly as he handed the baby to the hysterical mother. When he took off his helmet to swipe at his smoke-blackened face she realized it was Sam, that he'd made it out safely, and something inside her exploded. Talk about a hero! Misa thought about adding her voice to the others but then his captain pulled him away. Besides, she needed to get back to the newspaper and upload the shots onto her computer. Finishing up took her longer than she expected. Her editor loved the pictures, especially the one of Sam bringing the little boy out of the fire so he had bumped it to the front page of the local news section. He called her into his office, the photos she'd taken up on his comp

Book Two: Fired UpMisa Romero pulled into her driveway and automatically let her gaze shift to the house next door. Six months ago, Sam Braddock had moved in, and between mentally drooling over him and climaxing in her erotic dreams about him, she could hardly get him out of her mind. Who wouldn't want to do everything with a six-foot-four blond hunk with sculpted muscles that didn't come from any gym, and a smile that made her panties wet? He was the stuff any woman's dreams were made of. The few times she'd spoken to him, at the mailbox or when they both happened to arrive home at the same time, she'd actually had trouble forming words. All she could think about was how big his cock might be and how it would feel inside her.Even more than that, he might as well have the words "cocky alpha" tattooed on his forehead. The aura of command and self-confidence surrounded him like a cloud. She shivered every time she thought of him giving her orders in bed in that low, sexy voice. O

"Pizza's here!" Kristi sang out as she shouldered her front door closed and headed for the kitchen."Do I get to kiss the delivery person?" Patrick hollered back."No pizza unless you do," she teased.By the time she reached the kitchen, Patrick had clumped in from the living room on his crutches. Since he lived in a duplex, with stairs, they'd decided the smartest thing was to move him into her house, which was all on one level. She'd gotten used to that very fast. And loved it.She had barely put the pizza down before he leaned the crutches against the counter and pulled her into his arms. The kiss he gave her sizzled her down to his toes."Now, that's the kind of homecoming I like." She ran her tongue over her lower lip. Tasting him."We could do that long term," he told her in a cautious voice. He'd brought it up before, but she'd wanted to get the monkey off her back, first."Let's negotiate over pizza," she joked. She wanted to make the atmosphere as relaxed as possible.

The doctor took her through the doors to the emergency treatment area and led her into one of the treatment rooms. She nearly passed out when she saw Patrick. He was lying on the bed, his left leg in a cast from his ankle to his thigh. He sported a soft cast on his left wrist, stitches on one cheek, and scrapes on his forehead. His eyes were closed, and his face was lined with pain. But he was the most beautiful sight she'd ever seen. She moved over to stand beside the bed. They had the sides up, since they'd given him narcotics and didn't want him falling out on the floor. She took his right hand, his uninjured one, and threaded her fingers through his, squeezing gently. His eyes opened slowly, and his lips curved in an attempt at a smile."I didn't think they'd ever let you see me." His voice was raw, his words slurred a little from the pain meds, but he gave her hand an answering squeeze."Oh, Patrick." She had to bite her lip to keep from crying. "I'm so sorry this happened to

The car kept coming. Kristi thought the driver looked slumped over the wheel, his head pressing on the horn. Patrick, who was closest, raced toward the car to try and stop it."Oh my god." Kristi thought her heart would stop. "He'll get himself killed."The rest of it happened in less than a split second. As Patrick raced for the car, it swerved to head directly for him. Now she could see the driver clearly, saw him sit up from his slump, grab the wheel, and aim for Patrick. At the last minute, he tried to jump out of the way, but the car caught him with its bumper and knocked him onto the roadway. While she stood rooted to the spot, Jared, Hank, and some of the other firefighters raced toward the car. It swerved again and ended up crashing into a truck parked at the curb. Keith, who had been working the fire scene, pulled open the door and yanked the driver out of the vehicle. Out of the corner of her eye, she recognized Toby, as he struggled against Keith's hold. But that was all

They had just settled around the big table with cups of coffee, discussing the menu for dinner, when the speaker blared again. This one called for every piece of equipment they had and on the double."I have a sick feeling about this," Stan said as he pulled on his turnout gear."Me, too." Kristi took one moment to make sure Jared had stocked the ambo with extra supplies before they rolled out right behind the ladder truck.Three blocks away, they could see it was indeed a bad one. It was another abandoned apartment building, scheduled for demolition, and the black clouds spread for several blocks. Two blocks away, they could see the flames shooting up in the air. That was a good indication the building was fully involved, and at its most dangerous for the men who had to clear it. Because, abandoned or not, there would still be squatters, just like at the others. The scene was utter chaos. The battalion chief, the incident commander, was already there, making sure all protocols wer

Four days off had given Kristi a chance to rest, although, when Patrick was around, she didn't do much resting. It seemed the more time they spent together, the more intense their physical attraction and the stronger whatever bond it was formed between them. For the next week, whenever she was off and he could make it, they were together. She discovered he liked to cook and, sometimes, enjoyed making something special for her. She was totally unused to being catered to by the man in her life. She had to stop herself from being suspicious and waiting for the other shoe to drop.Sometimes, when she was on shift but between calls, she found herself sitting in the lounge with her mind wandering, questioning everything about the relationship with him. She was always waiting for the unexpected to happen, and not in a good way. Why couldn't she just get past this?"He's different," she kept reminding herself. "Don't ruin it with what was. Think of what is and what can be."This morning, Da
