Girls did not look at their brothers and feel their skin prickle and heat or their mouths go dry.
He wasn't even the sort of man she liked. In fact he was everything she disliked. Arrogant. Superior. Unfeeling. A self appointed demi god in a power suit ruling his kingdom from the top of his gilded tower.
And Cara knew all about men with god complexes didn't she? She had dated a surgeon whose ego was the size of the sydney opera house and then even worse because she should have known better she had moved in with him and decided that she was in love.
Jamming the bricks on her runway thoughts she focused on the cold handsome face of the man in front of her and made a snap decision,” I don't think you are ready for this letter Mr de la Velga.”
And in that moment she knew she wasn't ready to relinquish it because what if he didn't treat it with the respect that it deserved? What if he threw it away even without reading it?
Stiffening her resolve she talked to the envelope into her journal and then tour out of blank page from the back and pulled a pen from her tote bag and scribbled down her mobile number. “I will be staying at hostel journey across the town for a few more days and then I’m travelling to Mallorca and then Madrid.” She put the piece of paper on his desk. “If you want to reach me here's my number.” she bundled her things back into her tote and slung the strap over her shoulder. “Thank you for seeing me Mr de la Vega.” And then she turned to go.
“Miss Welsh?”
His deep commanding boys brought her to a standstill and her heart left with hope. Had he had an epiphany? Realised perhaps that he had behaved abominably?
Breath held she turned back her heart landed with a heavy thought of disappointment. Expect he was standing army extended holding out the photo she had left on his desk the one of himself has a baby. “You forgot this.”
Releasing her breath she shook her head. “It's yours keep it or throw it away. Up to you.”
She continued on to the door for a few agonising seconds her nerveless fingers fumbled with the handle while her need trickle from the unsettling sensation of his is drilling into her back.
But he didn’t call her name again. Didn't attempt to stop her.
As she walked past his assistant’s desk and the stunning Anna half rose out of her chair Cara held up her palm. “I can see myself out thanks.”
Her chest was so tight it wasn't until she stepped on to the street 44 stories below that she felt able to draw a full oxygen laden breath into her lungs again.
But as she set off across the city no amount of deep breathing could lift the weight from her heart.
Damn him.
What was she supposed to do now with her step mom’s letter?
“I have located the paperwork,” said Roberto Fuentaz long time solicitor and the trusted friend to the de la Vega family for over 40 years he paused a ripple of quiet and disquiet ran between and beneath the surface of Xavier's iron clad self control.
Xavier rose from behind his seat his mobile press tightly to his ear. Three short strides brought him to the thick glass wall one of the 2 floor to ceiling paints that afforded his office in the wellbuilt tower a panoramic view of the sprawling sunbaked metropolis below.
He stared blindly out at the city scape his body bristling with impatience under the impeccably tailored lies beneath his charcoal grey suit. “And?”
“Your birth mother's name was Matilda Sanchez.”
The first cold prickles of shock needled over his scalp even though the solicitor only confirmed what he already knew in his gut was true he raised his left arm and left his farm against the window needing to study himself he didn't suffer from Vertigo or a fear of heights but suddenly the shear drop on the other side of the glass wall to the city street over 40 stories below induced a wave of dizziness.
“Xavier?”
“I heard you Roberto,” he backed away from the window and returned to his desk. “Was she related to anyone in my parents’ employee?”
Another heavy pause. “With the greatest respect Xavier I would really feel more comfortable if you had this conversation with Elena and Victor. They have always said…”
“No.” He cut Roberto off he knew what his parents had said always.
We love you. Nothing will ever change that.
And in 33 years nothing ever had. Not even the unexpected arrival of his younger brother Ramon, the miracle baby the doctors had told his mother that she would never have.
His parents had also told him that he one decided to trace his biological family they would support him in that quest. He had never chosen that path but he knew that if he had then they would have stayed true to their word.
Because Victor and Elena de la Vega were good people. Good parents.
Xavier had worked hard over the years to make them proud. Worked harder still to prove to those members of the extended family who had never accepted him as one of their own that he was worthy of the de la Vega name.
As a boy seeing how the wheeled barbs and slide tons upset his Mama had made him even more determined to prove that he was just as good as if not better than any of them.
Years later he still faced the same insidious prejudices but now he had the pleasure of rubbing his detractors noses in his unrivalled successful stop despite the solicitors discomfort Xavier would not involve his parents at this point he would shield them. Protect them. At least until he understood what or rather who he was dealing with.
He sat down at the handcrafted old disk that had been handed down from father to son along the role of chief executive through 4 generations of the de la Vega men over a span of more than 60 years.
Every single word of this conversation remains strictly between you and me he said. “Are we clear?”
The older man said resign but respectful. “Just a moment.”
Xavier heard the sounds of paper being shuffled before roberto spoke again.
“I remember now. Miss Sanchez was the niece of your parents housekeeper at the time. The adoption was private. The paperwork was drawn up through this office.”
Xavier was silent for a moment and his mind processing. Assimilating. Finally he said,” Gracias Roberto. I appreciate your help and discretion,” he emphasised and then ended the call and immediately placed another.
The security specialist of the Vega corporation kept on retainer answered on first ring. “I just emailed the dossier through to you,” the man said without any preamble.
“Any red flags?”
“None, a couple of parking offences but nothing more serious. She is single and a qualified trauma nurse currently unemployed. Presence on social media is sporadic and low key. Mother lives in North America. Father is dead and yes he was married to Matilda Walsh nee Sanchez now also deceased,” he paused. “Without knowing what your specific concerns are, I would say that she is pretty harmless.”
Xavier twisted his lips. Any man believed that women were harmless was a fool. He knew from experience that they weren't. It was why he had taken exceptional care in choosing his lovers over the last decade and why he was being equally judicious in choosing a wife.
“And the surveillance?” He asked.
“We have still got eyes on her. She was at a dance club till 1:00 AM. she hasn't left hostel yet this morning.”
Xavier narrow desires. Cara Welsh was an unemployed party girl? “Keep me apprised of her movements.” He tapped his keyboard to bring his computer screen to life. “I will let you know if I need anything further.”
He put his phone down located the mail in inbox and open the attachment the first section of the document covered the basic stats name and marital status occupation including a full photo full colour head and shoulder shot that had probably come from one of her social media accounts. She was smiling into the camera lens giving him the illusion that she was smiling straight at him and just looking at the image gave him the exact same visceral gut punch that he had experienced last night when she had walked into his office.
Life before she had turned his life completely opposite to his head and then stalked out.
Over the years he had met hundreds of beautiful women had slept with a select few but never had been so immediately or powerfully arrested by a woman’s looks before.
Her colouring was striking and ahead turning combination of t and hair extraordinary vehicle eyes which welfare estimating blend of green and gold. Her features were strong and symmetrical with bold cheekbones straight nose and a white generous mouth.
Not pretty by conventional standards perhaps but stunning nevertheless.
Abruptly he sat back irritated at his unusual lack of focus. Cara Welsh’s looks however remarkable where irrelevant he was a problem to be handled and that was also he needed to contain until he has told what thread if any she goes. Just as his feelings about his birth mother would have to be shelved and examined at a later stage. He didn't have time for distractions. Global corporation to run. Or multi million dollar acquisition to negotiate. A major deal that at least one member of the board relish seeing him failed to close.
He opened the door dryer where he had showed the photo and the piece of paper she had left on his desk last night full he picked up his phone to punch in the number she had written down but then suddenly changed his mind and slipped the people and his phone into his jacket pocket and stood.
In the antique outside is of physics caused by Anna’s desk and checked his watch. It was 10:20 AM. “I'm heading out,” he told her.
Her heavily made her eyes blinked as if he had said something unintelligible file she glanced at her computer screen ,”But you have a 10:30 meeting with the marketing director..”
“Reschedule it. And arrange for Juan and Felipe to meet me with the car downstairs straight away.”
Anna gaped at him nonplussed. “And your video call with Peter Reynolds at noon?”
“I will be back in time for that,” he said because he had to be. His intended acquisition of Reynolds industries to priority over everything else.
Buttoning his jacket, he turned to go.
Anna shot up from her chair head expression weekly panicked. “But where are you going?”
“To deal with a problem,” he replied as he strode towards the lift leaving his wide eyed mouth gaping secretary staring at him.
Barcelona was basking in the heat of a blazing sun beneath the glorious blue sky when Cara emerged from the hostel just before 11:00 AM. She had risen late and lingered over breakfast chatting with the Canadian guy and the young German couple who had wanted to ask her a one your questions about Australia. She waited a bit, pausing on the pavement outside the hostel she Ramesh in her tote bag for her sunglasses and slip them on. She had a mild headache and her ears rank still from the over loud music in the club last night but at least she wasn't suffering with a hangover. She had one tequila shot with the girls and then stuck with lime and soda water for the rest of the time. The dancing had been fun but the clubbing scene really wasn't her thing. She had only gone because the 2 Irish girls with whom she was sharing a room had invited her out and the prospect of a few hours of defending music and final loving company had appealed more than sitting alone feeling sorry for herself.“Sen
The big man with mountainous shoulders who seemed no less intimidating even now that Cara knew his name waited in the reception area while she went to pack. The Irish girls we're still out for the count so she moved about the room quietly and left a farewell note saying that she was checking out due to change of plans said that she wish them well on their travels. When she emerged Juan reached for her backpack. “Let me carry it senorita Welsh.”Although she was more than capable of carrying her own bag she gave it up without any argument. He was under orders and she suspected even a burly tough looking man like when would not wish to invite his bosses displeasure.“I just need to settle my account,” she told him.“It is done.”She frowned. “But…”“Please come at once senorita. Senor de la Velga doesn't like to be kept waiting.”Cara wasn't happy about it but she held her tongue. She knew that arguing with the hired muscle was pointless. She would see something to Xavier though. She co
Turning away from the stunning view Cara went inside and took a shower in the massive ensuite bathroom and afterwards pulled on a pair of Navy dress jeans and a short sleeved white gloves she hadn't thought to ask Rosa about the dress code for dinner and she had never died with a billionaire in his home before so smart casual seems to be the safest option. After dying her hair into a loose not at her neighbor she checked the time and decided to make an appearance 10 minutes earlier than Rosa had recommended. If her host was a stickler for punctuality she would rather be early than be even a minute late. The villa was so big she took 2 wrong turns on her way to the formal dining room before she finally located it bossing in the hallway she touched a hand to her hair and took a deep breath and then walked into the room Rosa was there and then Cara smiled at her then shifted her girls to the long dining table and the single place setting at one end. Before she had fully processed the imp
Assuming Cara was travelling somewhere not far behind he didn’t slow his pace nor did he glance over his shoulder until he reached the doorway where he finally paused and looked back. Only to see that she was nowhere in sight. His mouth flattened.Infernal woman. He dumped his briefcase on the desk return to the hallway and cast an impatient look down its vast empty length. Finally just as he was beginning to consider the possibility that she had decided to defy him emerged around the corner at the far end of the hall when spotting him waiting hurried towards him on those long shapely legs. She stopped in front of him panting a little each breath moving her firm high breasts up and down.He gritted his teeth. don't look.“Did you get lost?” Xavier asked dryly.“Of course I got lost.”Her snapped response made him drawback a fraction. I was being sarcastic.she gave him a droll look. “Were you? I would never have guessed.”She jammed her hands on her hips and hacked out of breath blowi
So incendiary.Because even knowing Cara’s pride was at serious risk she couldn't pretend those little detonations of heat that occurred beneath her skin when she was near him weren't disturbingly real.It was all very well trying to ignore her bodies’ response to him but today she had stood in his office and found herself on the receiving end of a very frank and very masculine appraisal the inevitable flash of heat and awareness that had been so overpowering she had feared he would see some evidence of it.Even more disturbing had dreamed the trick her imagination had played on her. Or maybe it had been a trick of light reflecting in those cool grey eyes that had for a brief moment made them look blisteringly hot and molten. To unbalance her completely there had been movements when his hostility and surliness had abated and they kind of dry reluctant amusement had surfaced. It was all terribly confusing. And overwhelming. And no wonder her stomach was jumping with nerves as she made
Luckily the meat was exceptional unlike her floundering conversational skills full but how did one backpedal from loveless marriages and children to polite inconsequential small talk?“Why did you become a nurse?”Xavier’s deep voice carved through the heavy silence and Caraa lifted her eyes startled by the fact that he had spoken as much as by the question itself.“How do you know that I am a nurse?”“Rosa mentioned it.”So he had a conversation about her with his housekeeper? Or maybe Rosa had just mentioned it in her passing. Rosa had told her and Alphonso's only daughter was a nurse married and working in Berlin so Cara had naturally mentioned that she too was a qualified nurse.“It's the only job I ever wanted to do. Right from when I was a small child,” she said smiling because she couldn't not smile when she talked about her chosen profession.Taking care of people wasn't just what she did it was who she was. Who she had been from the day her mother had walked out and her bewil
Cara’s eyes widened although weather in surprise at the apology or the dominating touch of his hand he didn't know.Whatever the cause it didn't erase the look of stubborn pride from her face. “You only want me to stay because you don't trust me.”Xavier dropped his hand from her chin and before the urge to drag the pad of his thumb across her bottom lip to see if it felt as lush and soft as it looked grew too strong to resist.“That's not true.”It wasn't lie.She was an unexpected. From the moment she had turned up at his offices the other night spouting the outrageous claim that she was his stepsister through to today when he had come home and discovered her laughing and dancing with his staff he had felt as if his carefully controlled world was gradually shifting beneath him.And tonight somehow she had turned even the act of sharing a meal into an unpredictable affair. How the hell they had ended up talking about marriage and children and love of all things that singularly destru
The scenery along the stretch of coastline known as Costa Brava was breathtaking. Cara had grown up in a small coastal Township South of Melbourne so she was used to ocean and beaches but the glittering shores of the Mediterranean were in a different class altogether. Each time the sleep convertible powered around another bend and in new stunning vista open up before them she couldn't suppress little gasp of awe.Another one caught in her throat now and Xavier glanced over from the driver seat.“Spectacular, si?”He was spectacular. As riveting as the scenery infected jeans and a loose fitting white shirt with an open collar and rolled out sleeves stubble shaded lit his jaw and she liked this edgier look on him. He wore dark sunglasses and his thick black hair was roughly deliciously thanks to the cars open top.Every time she looked at him her breath went a little choppy but it was the moments when he smiled and his mouth loose end and those deep attractive grooves appeared in his le
Cara pursed her lips and then said,” You really think that I am going to tell you anything?”“No I don’t. But I am not above hurting you and you don’t mean anything to me so hurting you is going to be easier and probably be even fun.”“You think you are a man and that is why you are stronger than me?”“There is nothing to question about that. It is a known fact. You are the one who has been kidnapped and not me, so there is actually no point in arguing with me. I can do a lot of things to you, querida and make sure that no one ever finds you again but I am a good man with a good heart. Help me with what I require and I shall make sure you are sent back to Australia safe and sound.”“I know that you are lying. And nothing you say is going to make me believe that..” Cara spat at him as she said the words. Diego wiped his face with the back of his hand and sighed and then back handed her again. Cara knew it was coming and she had already swerved away and his hand did not hit her.She mov
Clubbing is a place for a type of people. Firstly, they had to be rich. Clubbing wasn't a poor man's activity. The cheapest booze inside would be worth twice the expensive brands outside. Everything was outrageously overpriced—not that he cared anyway.Second of all, they had to be a crowd person. Being in an enclosed room full of drunk people isn't exactly a paradise for introverted people. Sure, there wouldn't be much talking. Half of the experience was having conversations you'd barely hear over the booming music, or even remember the next morning because you're wasted as fuck, but there are still people who'd come up to you and talk.So when Xavier saw her, standing awkwardly with her outgoing friend dancing wildly by her side, he knew she didn't belong to this kind of scene. The complete opposite of him; as someone who basically grew up here, Xavier loved everything about the place. It felt like home, more so than any of his mansions, actually. He watched the two women as they he
“I know who you are, Diego. You made the mistake of speaking to me. And now I know that you are the one who is torturing me and has kidnapped me.”There was silence for a while and then all of a sudden the blindfold was taken off from her eyes and Diego was standing there before her in his shirt and trousers. He looked quite normal almost as if nothing had happened and was smirking at Cara.“I am sure you enjoyed that, querida.”“Don’t call me that you freaking bastard. You are nothing else but a vile manipulative..” said Cara as suddenly she was slapped and she could feel her lips split and she was bleeding and she could only feel helpless because her hands were still bound.“Don’t call me names, querida…your mouth was made for far better purposes and not this. You are a lot more important to me that you are ever going to be to my bastard cousin.”“And you are never going to be half the man that Xavier is.”“Whatever you say is not going to make me angry. You are a beautiful woman Ca
Cara struggled desperately, trying to free her hands from the heavy ropes that bound them together behind her back. She couldn’t see anything, thanks to the blindfold which covered most of her face. The ball gag shoved into her mouth prevented her from making much noise at all. When at last she realized the futility of her movements, she lay still and listened.Abruptly she felt the car begin to slow down. Cara’s heart fluttered in fear, wondering where she would be taken. She didn’t have long to wait. Moments later the car rolled to a stop, and a door opened. She was grabbed and hauled roughly out of the car, where she stumbled a bit on unsteady feet. Two hands gripped her shoulders, forcing her to walk quickly and unsteadily forward. She heard a door open. As she stepped through it, her footsteps echoed on what she wagered were hard tile floors. She and her captor proceeded through the room, then stopped suddenly. She heard a bell, followed by the sliding of a door that she realized
Some say, 'From pain comes wisdom,' but Jean had endured a lot over the past weeks and felt no wiser. Her boyfriend left her and it had hollowed out her soul. When she pushed through the door and rang the bell at Trader Dan's, she was hoping to put a bullet in her old life and thumb her nose at the jackass who left her behind. And Trader Dan's is just such a place; where souls are bared, pain will be endured, and whatever healing occurs will be everlasting. As she settled into the proprietor's chair with the tools of the trade laid out neatly on a small table nearby, Trader Dan's resonant voice filled her ears with a tale from another age. It seemed charming but odd to her. Perhaps it was just his effort to entertain his clients or calm frazzled nerves. Regardless, Jean found herself drifting back in time while the man gave her 'wisdom,' prick by prick."Meijuan sang like an angel, and from a very young age her voice would echo in the cavernous St. Ignatius Cathedral in Shanghai. “Love is really that important for me, Xavier. I know it sounds really stupid to you and you think that if I would just not think about it, things would be better but I cannot imagine spending my life in this way…”“All the time that we spent together, was it that difficult for you? Did you think that I did not care for you one whit? That I don’t wish to make you happy? If this is not all that there is to love then what is it that you want from me?”“Want from you? Xavier, from the moment that I have come here and have stepped into your world I have never wanted anything from. I have just wished for you to know the woman who was my mother and who was your mother as well and you never had the chance to. I never asked you for anything. You showered me with gifts, but those aren’t important to me. Do you know what is?”Xavier remained silent and looked at her darkly.“What is more important to me is the time that you spent with me…not just the love making but all the moments that you wer
Seeing that the stands were filling as the start of the game approached, Ulysses headed toward them to grab and save seats for the rest of the family that would be watching the game while Devon headed for the outfield to call his team into their dugout. At six feet, Alex stood a good head taller than any other player on the team. He looked like an adult being followed by children when the rest of the team fell in behind him as he led them to the dugout.Alex's team would be the visiting team for today's game, so Devon explained the planned batting order to the players before taking his lineup card out to the umpire at home plate. He saw that Aphrodite, Athena, his mother, and mother-in-law had all joined Ulysses in the stands. He heard his daughter squeal when she saw him and paused to wave to her. Athena looked as much like a junior version of her mother as Alex did his father. As had been the trend all season, Alex and his teammates batted around their first at-bat with Alex hitting
She was hopelessly in love. And nothing anyone would say could change the fact ever.Cara stared at Xavier who was sleeping on the bed with his back towards her. Sometime during the night he had woken her up by kissing her and pulling her nipples and then entering her again and again in deep and long strokes and Cara could not do anything but moan and cry out in pleasure.“Come for me, querida…make all those noises for me. You will always know that I was the one who made you cry out of pleasure!”It was so ardently male and so egoistic in nature that Cara thought how could a man be so full of himself, be so arrogant that he was the reason for a woman’s smile or tears. Even though he wasn’t wrong but still, the inherent feministic tendency in her tried saying that this was something that she should let go so easily but looking at him sleeping peacefully after such a night was not something she could agree to. She wished for him to sleep. They had the food that she had cooked and Xavier
"Well, I don't have a fancy car for you to drive to demonstrate my love for you, so I guess you'll have to settle for my undying concern for you and copious amounts of carnal pleasure. That's it! I can drive your Bentley and you get to drive me wild like you did last night."Laughing, Devon said, "That sounds like a win-win. We better get up and start getting ready if we intend to meet your parents on time."Aphrodite didn't move her body from on top of Devon as she reached over to the nightstand and retrieved her cell phone."What are you doing?" Devon asked."I'm texting my mom to let her know to meet us an hour later than we had planned.""Why? Traffic shouldn't be a problem for any of us on a Saturday morning."Finishing her text and returning the cell phone to the table, Aphrodite smiled down and said, "You haven't taken any of my hints, so I'll just have to make my intentions perfectly clear, my love. I intend to verify a suspicion that I have had since waking next to you...""W
