Mara

The mansion feels quiet and dead. A gloom has settled over our home, and I just want it gone. I don't like feeling this unsettled in a place I love so much.

The Omegas aren’t here, lighting up the space with their laughter. The kitchen, always filled with warmth and light, is cold and dark. Gregory isn’t here, asking me to ‘come play dinosaurs with me, Mara.’

“Where are Preston and Donovan?” I ask, hoping that their presence will lift the despair that settled like a suffocating blanket over everything.

“Gathering the dead,” Johnathan answers. His face is passive, but his eyes speak volumes.

“Should we go to the funerals?”

My mate shakes his head. “It’s not a funeral. They will cremate the fallen together. It's how we honour warriors.”

I’m relieved that we don’t have to go, but I feel guilty at the same time. I want to support our wolves - they need to know they’re not alone. That their King and Queen didn’t abandon them.

But after even a day in the infirmary, I’m still weak. Even

Mara“Why are you here?” I ask Kahn. “Can you please just get me a drink first… before you start interrogating me? Cooking sherry will do, I don’t care, just give me something.”Snorting softly, I get up and go to the parlour, hoping and praying that the two Betas have left. To my great relief, I find the door open and the lights off. Without bothering to switch on the overhead, I walk over to the drinks cabinet and get a fresh bottle of whiskey for Kahn. He’s agitated and out of patience by the time I return. “Took you long enough,” he says and tears open the seal.“Well, I move at the speed of a wolf, not a vampire. What’s wrong?”“Apart from the fact that Felicity had me drawn and quartered, mourning my head on a spike to witness by dangling torso, not much.”“Yu- you were aware of it?”“Yes.”“Last time-”He slams his head on the table. “I know what happened last night. Blissful memory loss. No such luck this time.” He pulls the cork out of the whiskey and starts to chug it. “Th

MaraI climb the steps to my father’s mansion with heavy legs. Haley, my best and probably only friend, dropped me off at the gate because Lucas, my mate, won’t allow me to drive. The guard refused to let Haley in, and I was forced to walk up the kilometre long driveway, while my bruised and battered body screamed out in agony.I haven’t been home in two years. Today is my twenty-first birthday, and my father wanted to see me for the first time since I married Lucas Mattfield - the future Alpha of Red Ridge.I am in a sad state. I’m only allowed to eat once a day - Lucas wants a hot wife - and last night I took a particularly brutal beating. It was one of the worst he’d ever given me, and he laughed the whole time. I think it’s one of the reasons my father refuses to see me. I’m always covered in fresh and healing bruises now, and he can’t stand to look at the thing he had done to me.On the night of our wedding, Lucas took me into the bond room - the place where newly wed couples h

MaraI wake to the sound of tyres humming softly on the tarmac, the woodsy scent of Beta Preston’s cologne in my nose, and the more flowery lavender scent of a woman. Frowning, I sit upright and look out of the windshield of the moving SUV. Ahead of us is a long, deserted road and the setting sun.I have no idea where we are. Red Ridge must be far behind us. I’ve never seen anything so empty and desolate in all my life. The world here is flat, with nothing but the road and grasslands as far as the eye can see. How long was I out?“Hello lovely,” a chirpy voice says from the front seat. “Did yeh have a good sleep?”I look over at the platinum blonde sitting in the passenger seat. She’s in her mid-twenties. Her make-up is heavy, and she’s dressed in a tight, red dress that leaves little to the imagination. All I manage in way of an answer is a croak.“Give her some water,” Beta Preston says, his voice deep and even. He’s a handsome man, with salt and pepper hair, hazel eyes, and a bea

MaraI stare in wonder at the winding road ahead of us. It disappears around several bends, leading all the way to the top of the mountain, and the town of Haven’s Crest.Who the hell builds an entire town on the top of a mountain? We crawl up the road. There’s literally nothing between us and a sheer drop into the canyon below, but it’s idyllic, with the green mountain rising up against the bright blue sky. Cotton candy clouds drift in the azure heavens. As we round one of the many dangerous bends, a waterfall comes into view. Rainbows dance in the misty water that vanishes into the pond below. “Wow,” I gasp.“Pretty, ain’t it?” Rhoda says with a soft laugh.I can’t tear my eyes away from the beautiful scenery. It’s like a postcard sent from some exotic place I never knew existed. Far below and in the distance, a blue lake glimmers in the bright sun. At long last, we reach the top. A massive white and black sign welcomes us to *Haven’s Crest - A home for every soul.*I smile wryly. H

Mara“Your father asked me to take you off his hands,” Johnathan says in a straightforward, almost bored voice. “Actually, he put you on the open market. There was a fierce bidding war for you.”My eyes almost bulge out of my skull and fresh tears burn my throat. How could my father do that to me? He did not put me on that market to sell me to an Alpha. It’s a slave market where wolves sell their used up wives or unwanted daughters. Most end up as breeders or prostitutes in the wolf pleasure houses.“Everyone thought you came with an inheritance and that you were worth the investment,” Johnathan goes on.I have no idea how much he paid for me, but my father would not have settled for anything less than the compensation Kysan and Lucas demanded. “My father disowned me,” I whisper. “You won’t get your money back.”“I know. Preston told me.” His eyes slide over my ravaged face. “That is not why I bought you. You do not need to fear me,” he says and leans over to take one of the drinks. “

JohnathanI take out my phone and pull up the listing for Mara. She has been removed from the site, but I screenshot it right before the auction came to an end.I spent roughly half the money in my bank account on her. It’s way more than I can afford to waste on a she-wolf. I did not need someone like Mara. Technically, I can take any mate and declare her my Luna for my pack to be recognised by the council. But I wanted Mara.Establishing a new pack takes a lot of money. Money I don’t have. The modern world destroyed a lot of packs. Humans are encroaching on our territories, and to keep the unknowns, as we call them, out, we have to buy the land that has been our homes for centuries. The human authorities who are aware of our existence also keep increasing our taxes. They are convinced we’re rich even though most of us don’t even have a pot to piss in.Douglas used the word heiress in Mara’s listing, knowing that a lot of Alphas are struggling to get by now and would jump at the chanc

Mara I thought I’d enjoy my excursion into town with Rhoda, but I’ve been isolated for so long that all the people made me nervous. Everyone seemed to know who I am. People stopped me to introduced themselves, welcomed me to the town, and asked me if I’m happy to be here, when the wedding would be, if I like the Alpha, and wanted to know who bruised me up. Who dared to touch a hair on our Luna’s pretty little head? Is your father happy with the new arrangement? All questions I couldn’t answer, or didn’t want to answer Rhoda was no help. She basked in the attention. Or perhaps people here are just like that and she’s so used to it that she didn't even notice. I couldn’t quite figure out which one of the two it was. By the time we made it back to the mansion, I was exhausted and ready to crawl into a hole. There was a time, not so long ago when I think about it, that I enjoyed going out. I was popular in school - no doubt because of my father's money - and I had no shortage of in

MaraThe dining room is one of the smallest places I’ve seen so far. It’s big enough to hold a six-seater table, carved by hand like everything else, a sideboard and serving trolley piled high with food and plates. There’s enough room to move around, but no one’s going to throw any lavish parties in here. I get the feeling that it’s Johnathan’s private dining room, but somewhere in this massive mansion there must be some kind of reception hall for parties. Wolves love to throw parties.Preston is sitting at the end of the table with a lovely blonde woman next to him. She’s dressed comfortably in a strappy sundress. I remember when I was able to wear clothes like that. Jealousy tucks at my heart - not because the girl is a hundred times more beautiful than I am, but because she has the kind of freedom I’ve forgotten.“Hello,” she chirps and sits upright. “I’m Ally, Preston’s mate. You are Mara right?”I nod and smile at her. Like everyone else in Haven’s Crest, she’s almost uncomfortab

MaraI slowly come awake. I'm warm, dry, and comfortable. The last thing I remember was running down that mountain, the rage burning through me like a wildfire.Rain pitter-patters overhead, but the room is light and airy.Confused, I sit up and look around. I’m all alone, in a room that looks very much like a hospital. The bed is slightly inclined, allowing me to sit half upright.I'm in Haven's Crest infirmary. What happened to my my mate? My friends? My pack? Where are they?Panic courses through my veins. I have to get Johnathan. Is he dead? No.I grasp my heart, as if touching my chest will bring my mate closer to me. I’d know if he was dead. I’d feel it.I mind link with Johnathan. He's there, alive, keeping the connection open, but not responding to my endless stream of questions, asking him where is, what happened, who died, who lived...I couldn't stand it. Watching them die. Our warriors. Ilse. The vampires. Even the nymphs. Every time I saw one of them fall, it was li

JohnathanI send a prayer up to all the gods and goddesses who are supposed to be looking after us, asking them to look over us as we attempt the impossible here tonight. The Lunae will go in first, joining their magic to disorientate and scare the enemy. I would never have thought of it, but Rose and Pia told me that it’s what they’re best at. Altering someone’s mind. That will hopefully get most of the soldiers out of their armored vehicles. We will use our rocket launchers to blow up the first, middle, and last vehicle, making it impossible for them to drive back down.I picked out a few wolves that are excellent snipers, they will take out as many people as they can from the ridges. The rain makes it difficult, but not impossible - not for a wolf, at any rate. The vampires will literally rain fire down from above with the petrol bombs. It’s not ideal, but it’s the best we can manage. When that fails, Ilse told me she’ll simply start to drop some boulders on them.I did ask the Lun

JohnathanMara isn’t entirely wrong. We could, perhaps, get the upper hand if we attack from the side, taking the vehicles out one by one, sowing chaos and capitalising on it.There is a better way though. A slow grin spread across my face.I know what to do. With the help of the vampires attacking from above, our small stash of explosives, a little bit of magic, nature, and whole lot of dumb luck… we may just pull it off.I still want the Omegas out of the way though. Just in case we don’t make it. We are faster than they are, and can disappear into the mountains when it looks like we’re losing. Both of the bickering Alphas made excellent points. Hiding is not going to help, and neither will a head-on attack. So we have be sneaky.I put my thumb and forefinger between my lips and whistle loudly, silencing the ongoing screaming match. “Okay. Here’s what we’re going to do…”I lay my plan out to the Alphas. I’m barely done talking, when Donovan grabs a handful of warriors and sets off

MaraThe alarm slowly comes to life, the off-key wee-wah, wee-wah, echoing across the town growing louder and louder, until I can feel it vibrating in my bones. It's so loud that I have to hold my ears shut, in case the loud alarm burst my eardrums.Felicity grimaces and takes off, quickly disappearing behind the curtain of rain. “Do you think she’ll bring Kahn back?” I ask Johnathan, screaming to make myself heard above the alarms.Johnathan taps his head and switches over to the mind link, though the alarm, fear, and roar of the rain makes it difficult to concentrate. “Yes. She will. She might be angry and hurt, but she’s not stupid.”I nod, and stare at the lights coming ever closer. They definitely belong to big vehicles - trucks or buses or maybe even tanks.Wolves, humans, witches, and other creatures I’ve never seen out and about, start to spill from their homes, joining us in the street. I see Joshua first and run to him. Johnathan makes a grab for me, but when he sees what I

MaraIt feels like something is crawling under my skin. An itch I can’t scratch. Something is coming. It's not just the heat that's setting my nerves alight tonight.I can taste it in the air.Death.**For such gentle people, the fae sure has one hell of a violent fertility goddess. When Johnathan and I mated, the Goddess descended from the heavens to bless us. Her presence was warm and welcoming. I found comfort in her embrace.Vesta’s presence was like getting hit over the head with an aphrodisiac. If Johnathan wasn’t there, I don’t know what I would have done. Probably humped a tree. But it was much more than that. She made me see something I'd never seen before. It was as if I stood outside of my own body, looking at myself and my behaviour. For just a second, I saw myself as Johnathan must have seen me all these weeks. Cold, detached, distant. Then he took my hand, and I crashed back into my body. And all I could think while we ran through the forest was that I’ve hurt him. I

JohnathanI indulge Mara for a moment, kissing her like my life depends on it. I pull her in closer, holding her as tight as I can, relishing in the way her hot body washes the cold of the rain away. I curl my fingers around her ass and grind my erection into her belly.I barely noticed it at first. The sheer amount of rain diluted Mara's scent, but Vesta’s appearance triggered my mate's heat. There is a part of me that wants to give in to it. I want to throw her on the ground and take her as violently as I can, knowing that she won't resist at all. Dante is trying his best to push me out of the way. He’s all hormones and instinct right now. He can scent his mate, and he wants to breed. In the same way, Aria is starting to overtake Mara's senses. And my mate is doing nothing to stop her. It’s a sure sign that she is happy to continue down this path. When I feel like I’ll explode, I gently push her away, but hold on to her shoulders, unwilling to break out physical connection. “Do yo

  • In Service of the Alpha   Chapter 109

JohnathanA fae festival of any kind is a spectacular event. The food isn’t to my taste, but it’s worth it just to sit back and watch them bask in the glory of their earth goddess - Vesta. She talks to me from time to time, but mostly to tell me what a monumental fuck up I am. Oberon told me that it’s just her manner, but I’m sure he’s lying. She doesn't strike me as the benevolent, kind goddess, the fae make her out to be.Her presense always feels dark and ominous.Vesta made it clear to me that she is not fond of wolves. If the fae lore is to be believed, she protested against the creation of werewolves and vampires because she thought we’d only upset the natural balance. She wasn’t completely wrong, but I think the humans did a much better job of it than wolves ever could. Lycans were created to restore the balance, but then vampires came along and disturbed it again. It’s a never ending cycle of destruction and creation. We never seem to learn our lesson, making the same mistak
