Johnathan

Upon seeing my reaction, Mara quickly starts to raise her defences again. I grab her wrist to get her attention. “Don’t.”

“I told you-”

“I’m fine. It was just very sudden. Give me a little warning next time.”

She stops what she’s doing and settles back in her seat. The pack house comes into view as we round the last corner, and I let out a little sigh of relief. I want some time with my mate before I tackle the next crisis.

I know I have to go down to the town to figure out this mess with the accommodations, but I’m absolutely not leaving Mara here by herself. The state she’s in scares me - she’s bound to do something to herself - but I have to convince her to come with me.

“Quick shower,” I say as Baxter pulls up to the front door. “Then we’ll go into town.”

“You want me to go with you?” Mara asks.

“Yes,” I say and switch over to our mind link. “More time together, remember?”

“You’ll be busy. I’ll just get in the way.”

“Fuck’s sake Mara, you are never in the way. Stop beatin

JohnathanThe town is crawling with people. There are a lot more people than I expected to find, and I have no idea how the hell we’re supposed to sort them all out. There are so many that their auras blend together, and I can’t tell who is Omega and who is Alpha. It is absolute pandemonium. My Lycans and Alphas try their best to control the crowd, but the sheer number of wolves makes it impossible.I walk up to a Gamma, Jeremy, the one I met in the woods of Red Ridge. “Could you do a headcount?” I ask.The Gamma shakes his head. He’s covered in sweat, and exhausted. The poor man is seconds away from losing his shit completely. “Rhoda is trying to take down names.”Mara’s hand slips from mine and she disappears into the crowd. I stop myself before I can call out to her. The wolves need to respect her as their queen, as much as they respect me. It ultimately doesn't matter. She's not far, and I can feel her anyway - her quiet resignation - as she heads in Rhoda’s direction.I put my th

MaraWe step into the cool, dark church. I’ve been in human churches before, and always found them comforting and peaceful. There’s something about the candles and quiet that soothes me."Patrick!" Johnathan calls out."I don't think he's here," I say, smiling as my voice echoes in the empty church."He's here. He's always here. He lives here with his wife.""He has a wife?" I ask, surprised."Yes, he-"My mate stops talking when the priests steps through a door in the back of the church, and comes straight for us. “Johnathan,” he says when he reaches us, and gives my mate a big smile. “To what do I owe this unexpected pleasure? Did you come to give your life to the Lord?”I’ve never heard anyone call my mate by his first name. It’s strange. But Johnathan is completely unperturbed. He just chuckles at the priest’s remark. “Patrick,” he says. “I need to use your church to shelter some of the incoming wolves.”The priest’s eyes flick over to me. His bright grey eyes are lively and pier

MaraUnlike the church, the hotel is absolutely chaotic. The energy in here is stifling, oppressive, and I want to turn right back around and leave this place.Johnathan was wrong. They are not my people. They never were, and they never will be.The hotel has more than fifty rooms, and space for several hundred guests, but Johnathan gave the hotel to the Lunae to use exclusively. My mate is paying for the use of this place, so the owner of the hotel doesn’t have to shoulder the financial burden. As far as I can tell, The Lunae picked out their own suites - the best rooms the hotel has to offer - and they’re still not happy. They want free run of the town.More came in during the night, and I counted twenty Lunae as I made my way through the hotel, looking for Rose. Johnathan posted six Alpha males in the hotel to guard over the women. All of them look miserable. They are wearing their charms, but the Lunae, especially the younger ones, relentlessly hit on them.I stop next to an Alpha

MaraOberon does that thing where he makes food disappear out of thin air and sits back while I eat. He helps himself to some of the food, but not as much as I do. He nibbles on little bits here and there, but he's mostly focused on me, making sure that I eat.The honeyed wine is exquisite, and while I drink way too much of it, I don’t feel drunk. Just very, very relaxed. “How long will Johnathan be?” I ask Oberon.I enjoy this place, but I know the fae doesn’t like it when people intrude in their forests for too long. They prefer the solitude and comfort of their own kind. I'm a trespasser on their sacred lands.“A while longer,” Oberon answers. “I thought you and I might talk about some things while we wait. Johnathan made a mistake, sending you to the Lunae. They have no interest in helping you.”“I know. They want to use me. My power.”Oberon nods. “Indeed. You have to understand… Johnathan did not act maliciously. He truly wants to help you.”“He can’t.”“He can. If you would onl

JohnathanA fae festival of any kind is a spectacular event. The food isn’t to my taste, but it’s worth it just to sit back and watch them bask in the glory of their earth goddess - Vesta. She talks to me from time to time, but mostly to tell me what a monumental fuck up I am. Oberon told me that it’s just her manner, but I’m sure he’s lying. She doesn't strike me as the benevolent, kind goddess, the fae make her out to be.Her presense always feels dark and ominous.Vesta made it clear to me that she is not fond of wolves. If the fae lore is to be believed, she protested against the creation of werewolves and vampires because she thought we’d only upset the natural balance. She wasn’t completely wrong, but I think the humans did a much better job of it than wolves ever could. Lycans were created to restore the balance, but then vampires came along and disturbed it again. It’s a never ending cycle of destruction and creation. We never seem to learn our lesson, making the same mistak

JohnathanI indulge Mara for a moment, kissing her like my life depends on it. I pull her in closer, holding her as tight as I can, relishing in the way her hot body washes the cold of the rain away. I curl my fingers around her ass and grind my erection into her belly.I barely noticed it at first. The sheer amount of rain diluted Mara's scent, but Vesta’s appearance triggered my mate's heat. There is a part of me that wants to give in to it. I want to throw her on the ground and take her as violently as I can, knowing that she won't resist at all. Dante is trying his best to push me out of the way. He’s all hormones and instinct right now. He can scent his mate, and he wants to breed. In the same way, Aria is starting to overtake Mara's senses. And my mate is doing nothing to stop her. It’s a sure sign that she is happy to continue down this path. When I feel like I’ll explode, I gently push her away, but hold on to her shoulders, unwilling to break out physical connection. “Do yo

MaraIt feels like something is crawling under my skin. An itch I can’t scratch. Something is coming. It's not just the heat that's setting my nerves alight tonight.I can taste it in the air.Death.**For such gentle people, the fae sure has one hell of a violent fertility goddess. When Johnathan and I mated, the Goddess descended from the heavens to bless us. Her presence was warm and welcoming. I found comfort in her embrace.Vesta’s presence was like getting hit over the head with an aphrodisiac. If Johnathan wasn’t there, I don’t know what I would have done. Probably humped a tree. But it was much more than that. She made me see something I'd never seen before. It was as if I stood outside of my own body, looking at myself and my behaviour. For just a second, I saw myself as Johnathan must have seen me all these weeks. Cold, detached, distant. Then he took my hand, and I crashed back into my body. And all I could think while we ran through the forest was that I’ve hurt him. I

MaraThe alarm slowly comes to life, the off-key wee-wah, wee-wah, echoing across the town growing louder and louder, until I can feel it vibrating in my bones. It's so loud that I have to hold my ears shut, in case the loud alarm burst my eardrums.Felicity grimaces and takes off, quickly disappearing behind the curtain of rain. “Do you think she’ll bring Kahn back?” I ask Johnathan, screaming to make myself heard above the alarms.Johnathan taps his head and switches over to the mind link, though the alarm, fear, and roar of the rain makes it difficult to concentrate. “Yes. She will. She might be angry and hurt, but she’s not stupid.”I nod, and stare at the lights coming ever closer. They definitely belong to big vehicles - trucks or buses or maybe even tanks.Wolves, humans, witches, and other creatures I’ve never seen out and about, start to spill from their homes, joining us in the street. I see Joshua first and run to him. Johnathan makes a grab for me, but when he sees what I

And that is all she wrote folks. My dearest readers, I'd like to thank you for coming on this ride with me. Thank you for sticking around, for your thoughtful comments, and support. I may not always reply to every comment, but I do my best to read them all and I appreciate every one of you.Johnathan and Mara are two of the most complex characters I've ever written, and I hope I did their story justice. I always say that I'm not an author - I'm just the dumb ass writing up the incident report. The person chosen to tell their story. And that was very much the case here. I'm not in charge of a story, the people in my head are.My next book will be available soon, and I promise it will not be another saga like this one.I love you guys. Thank you for making my twisted heart sing.Until we meet again,Celice.

  • In Service of the Alpha   Chapter 160

MaraI stand on the platform next to Johnathan. For once, I'm wearing a proper dress, fit for the occasion. Before us, is a sea of reporters, cameras flash, microphones are pointed at us like guns, quiet voices ripple through the air.Behind us is the ruin that was once our town. Johnathan insisted that we have the press conference here, and he made sure to invite reporters and podcasters of his own choosing. He really doesn’t trust the humans and their peace deal. The last two weeks had been brutal. We kept finding fresh bodies all over the place. All of them had been recently killed. Children torn apart, mothers with their babies still in their arms. Each dead child hurt me as deeply as if they were my own, and I finally understood the prophecy. It was never my own children who died. I begged the Goddess to spare my child because we had lost so many before the humans came back to take the town.Johnathan sent warriors into the forest to look for the culprits. They found a dozen su

MaraJohnathan is filthy and smells of death, but I don’t care. I roll into his arms and cuddle tightly against him. It’s all I can do. I can barely move as it is. I feel as if a bulldozer ran over me, and left me on the streets to bleed to death.I can't process it. All that blood, the pain, the suffering, the death. I even feel sorry for the human soldiers who had to endure that brutal battle. I lie against my mate, his arm protectively around me, and I cry. My heart has been torn to pieces. They took almost everything from us - and those who are truly responsible, the ones who sent their soldiers here to die - will never be punished for it. They will never feel the loss. They get to go on with their lives as if nothing happened.“King?” someone asks, her voice coming from far, far away. I hear her, but I can’t place her. My mind is a buzzing mess, unable to hold on to any thoughts.“What is it, Ingrid?” Johnathan asks, his voice muffled.“I, uhm, we found your mother.”“And?”“I-

JohnathanBefore the dust even settles, someone sticks a camera in my face. Not one of mine - a human. “Mister Banks, can you tell us what sparked this conflict?”Absolute fucking vultures. I’m still on my knees, naked as the day I was born, staring at my trembling, bloody hands, and they want a fucking statement from me?I look up and straight into the camera. “We didn’t start this,” I snarl. “You did. Look at it. Look at the mess you’ve made. We never bothered anyone, all we ever wanted was a chance to live our lives in peace.“They killed the fae king today. Are you aware? Did you see him die?” My voice is cold, bitter. The reporters are quiet, giving me room to speak, to contradict myself, so they can spin this in their favour. I know how they operate by now.“Do you know what the fae did for you? They never killed you, they never bothered you or harmed you. All they ever did was comfort those who were hurt, healed the sick, eased the suffering of the dying. And you killed them. F

  • In Service of the Alpha   Chapter 157

Johnathan“I’m sorry,” I say to Kahn after our hurried meeting.Mara and Talitha already left with Oberon to bring the town’s children to the fae forest. The Omegas and humans who can’t, or won’t, fight are heading off into the woods to hide in the caves.“I’ve waited hundreds of years,” the vampire comments dryly. “Another month won’t kill me.”“You might die tonight.”He just shrugs. “Unlikely, but if I do… I hope Frans dies with me so we can be together in the afterlife.”That is such a cold way of looking at it, but I guess it’s pragmatic under the circumstances. I don’t mind dying tonight, but I don’t want Mara to die. The only reason I’m still fighting is for her and Gregory. It’s as good a reason as any other. A man who doesn’t have a reason to fight is a useless soldier. He’ll give up as soon as things get too difficult.“Why are you even fighting?” I ask Kahn. “If you’d rather be dead?”“I don’t want to die,” he answers calmly. “I just wouldn’t mind if I do. I’m really fuckin

  • In Service of the Alpha   Chapter 156

JohnathanWhile the rest of the town is becoming complacent, going on with their lives as if nothing is wrong, I’ve been working, never relaxing, never letting my guard down. It's not over, not even by a long shot. I keep my soldiers fit, healthy and battle ready. We have accumulated a staggering amount of weapons and heavy artillery, all of it hidden from view. Oberon assures me that the humans’ satellites can’t penetrate our magical veil, but I’m sceptical. No magic is infallible, just as the humans aren’t infallible, and those fuckers are industrious. I wouldn’t be surprised if they develop some kind of technology that can ‘see’ through our protections. It only took us two years, but we finally found a crack in the human allies’ armour. The brilliant people I appointed over that time managed to find backdoors into the humans’ computer system and started intercepting their encrypted communications.I have no idea how they’re doing it, and I decided not to ask. There are some things

MaraJohnathan makes a plate of food for my father and hands it to him. To my surprise, my dad sits as far away from us as possible. "I know how much I stink," he announces. "I don't want to spoil anyone's appetite."With my father seettled for now, I can finally ask Kahn the question I've been burning utter since the trio showed up here, “How did you kill Thrax?”“They were hiding in a cave. He was in the death sleep. So old, and he still couldn't resist it. I just dragged him out into the sun, and poof. Dead in seconds. It was kind of disappointing really. I wanted fireworks. Anyway... we stuck around just to make sure he didn’t come back after sunrise.”“Good,” my mate says. “So it’s all sorted?”“Yeah, looks like it,” Kahn says.I look at Eli who is still chowing down. It's as if he can't stuff the food into his mouth quickly enough. "What happened at Red Ridge?"The vampire looks at Eli who doesn't utter a word, he just grunts and moans as he keeps chewing. It's my father who answ

Mara“What if we’re wrong? I ask. “What if he’s been playing us all this time?”It’s the first time since the incident with his mother that I feel I can talk to Johnathan about my concerns. He had so much to deal with, his heart was so heavy, that I did not really want to pile on. But if Eli has my father then I can’t postpone it anymore.“You saw him in your vision. Rick was torturing him. They don't usually torture people who cooperate.”“Yes, but there’s… a ripple effect, isn’t there? When we change the future, we don’t just change the outcome, we change other things too. It’s almost as if- the whole world bends around the new future we’ve created.”“The butterfly effect,” my mate says with a little smile. “One small action can affect the larger system.”A puff of air explodes from my lips. I’m relieved that he understands. “Exactly.”“Okay.” He smiles at me. “If he is on his way here, then it means we’ve altered the course of our destiny, correct?”I nod.“Then we’ll just have to

JohnathanThe inside of my skull explodes with hot rage so intense that I see the world through a thick haze of red. I am aware that I am on my feet, snarling and growling at the vampire. Dante surges, ready to rip Kahn’s throat out. I’m only vaguely aware of the others’ presence. “You had no right,” I grit past my teeth. “You took my vengeance from me. It was over!”“Can you excuse us?” Kahn asks the others.“No, they can not. Who the hell do you think you are?” I curl my hands into fist, aware that I won’t be able to hang on to Dante much longer.Kahn would probably survive if I tear him to shreds, but I wonder if he’ll survive being eaten.I blink, and the vampire is on top of me, his hands curled around my neck. I fall backward, missing the edge of the chair by an inch.“You have no clarity anymore,” Kahn says, and lets me go.Enraged I get to my feet, ready to pull him apart like a fly. I look around at the empty dining room, and my anger simply fizzles. “When did everyone leave
