Chapter 3 Crawl Like A Dog

Author: Ellieee
A gust of wind blew past.

Everly suddenly opened her eyes in the darkness. The image in front of her was blurry. The memories of what happened four years ago were still vivid in her mind.

She sat up and panted heavily. Cold sweat mixed with tears dripped on the thin quilt, almost soaking it through.

Fragments of memories constantly appeared in front of her eyes, the dim window, the red blood, and the sounds of screams...all of these seemed to have confined her, and she had no way of running away from them.

A shrill alarm rang, snapping her back into her senses. She reached out and pressed on the alarm. It was already six o'clock in the evening.

She thought of him again.

The past seemed to have happened as though it was yesterday in her head. She opened her eyes slightly and looked out of the window.

Outside the window was the darkening sky. The slow-moving ventilator cast moving shadows in the room. She touched her clothes that had been soaked in cold sweat and changed into another set of black clothes. She slowly walked out of the small, coffin-like basement and came to the place where she was going to work at night.

There was a funeral parlor attached with a cremator, and she worked as a night shift staff to help move the corpses.

Half a month ago, after she was released from prison, she looked for many jobs, but no one wanted to hire her until she came here.

She was grateful for this job, although everyone else tried their best to avoid jobs of this nature.

The funeral parlor housed people of many sorts, laughing, cursing, and crying. Many of them came and went, but all of this had nothing to do with her. She walked through the crowd with her head down.

"What bad luck! Running into her!"

"Exactly! I heard that she carries corpses at night in a funeral home. We have been unlucky ever since she came here! It's all her fault!"

As soon as she walked out, someone spat at her.

She lowered her eyes and walked over the stain on the floor silently. Over the years, she had been accustomed to being silent.

When others saw that she ignored them, they became bolder. They started pushing her again, and a blonde man approached her, trying to rub his dirty body against hers.

The blonde man swung his belt around and said, "Girlie, look at everyone here. They all dislike you. So, why don’t you make me a happy man instead? I consider that some contribution towards society."

"Yo, man! Go get her! Come on!"

"That's right! We have your back!"

The obscene words rang in her ears, and everyone looked at her like a predator looking at its prey. Everly remained silent. She knew that resistance and explanation were never useful in such situations. She did not bother to argue with them anymore but lowered her head and quickly walked away.

However, before she could take any steps away, a hand grabbed onto her arm and pulled her back.

The blonde man pinched her chin and said with a perverted look, "Wow, this woman here is actually quite good-looking!"

"Let me go!" She tried hard to rid herself of his grip.

"Oh, my lady here is quite hot-tempered. Would you want to let me have some fun with you?" The blonde man whistled as he spoke. He turned his head and said to the other men around, "Come on, my brothers. Let's have fun together!"

All the men burst into laughter as he spoke.

Encouraged, the blonde man took off his belt and was about to pull off her clothes.

"Let me go!" Her usually flat voice finally sounded a little anxious and scared, like stirring up waves on stagnant water that had been calm for many years.

"I won't let you go. Haha, the more you struggle, the more I am going to enjoy it! Quit your job and be with me. We will treat you well!" The blonde man said, pulling her clothes and dragging her aside.

The crowd burst into laughter, and some of them were taking pictures.

The sound and lights of the flash had sent her into a daze. She was unable to tell where she was at the moment. The images in her memory seemed to appear in front of her eyes. The heavy rain four years ago, the man's cold and piercing eyes, and the hands that groped on her body…

"No... I didn't do it... Not me!" Everly cried out. She repeated what she said over and over again and pushed the man in front of her away. Her voice was hoarse and terrible as she cried hysterically.

"Okay, okay. It's not you. Now be nice. I will protect you and play with you!" The blonde man tried to kiss Everly while obscenely coaxing her.

Carson…

She looked up and saw the man's face amidst the chaos.

An obscene-looking and filthy man was standing in front of her.

It was not Carson.

The voices of the women in the prison seemed to echo in her ears again…

"Are you still waiting for him to pick you up? You killed the woman he loved and he sent you here himself. He had wished for you to die here. How could he let you go easily? Idiot, he has abandoned you long ago!"

Tears streamed down her face.

She cried and stopped struggling. The blonde man thought she was finally obeying him, so he tried to kiss her.

The blonde man's face was getting bigger and bigger in front of her. As he was about to kiss her, she headbutted him hard on his forehead.

She then bent her knees and gave him a hard kick in between.

"Ah!"

The blonde man covered his crotch and fell down on the ground while she took advantage of this moment to escape quickly.

"F*ck! Catch her! I’m going to f*cking kill her!" The blonde man shrieked in pain. Everly was immediately tripped by someone in the crowd causing her to fall and scrape her knees. Pain shot up from her legs and temporarily immobilized her. Before she knew it, multiple hands began to reach out to her and started grabbing her.

“Help! Save Me!” She shouted at the top of her lungs, her voice hoarse.

However, no one had reached out a helping hand. Everyone around her laughed at her, men and women alike. The men had already pulled off her jacket as they watched her attempting to crawl away.

On all fours, like a dog.

Why?

Why was everyone doing this to her when she did not do anything wrong? They humiliated and violated her. The things that happened four years ago are happening again.

Was it wrong for her to exist in this world?

A strong yet greasy hand grabbed her on her ankle and dragged her backward. Inch by inch, she was dragged; inch by inch, her heart sank.

Just as she was about to fall into despair, a pair of nice leather shoes appeared in front of her.

"Help..." She raised her head and tried asking for help. She raised her head and was met with a pair of angry eyes. Everly was stunned and stopped struggling. The man stood in front of her, looking down at her with his eyes full of cold rage. Four years did not leave any trace on his face but made him look more mature. The memory from four years ago surged in her head again, and pain started seeping into her already numb heart. "Drag her here!" The blonde man's voice came from behind her, snapping her out of those memories. She lowered her head in silence and defeat, as she withdrew her hand that had just reached out for help. She hated and feared everything that had happened in the past four years. She no longer dared to confront him, nor to look at his face. As she took her hand back, a big hand grabbed her hand and pulled her up. Then, the hand grabbed at her neck, forcing her to raise her head and look into his bloodshot eyes. He glared at her as if she had committed a

He was stunned for a moment, but then he came back to his senses, angrier. He slammed her back against a pillar, locked her face with his palm, and forced her to look at him. "How dare you cry!" His cold eyes were full of rage, and anger twisted his handsome features. "Stubborn and unrepentant. Do you live by replying to those men just now? Everly, are you this cheap?" She looked at his angry eyes and smiled. She was cheap, her love was cheap, so she fell in love with him. She had witnessed the women around him come and go, but she still thought she might be different from the rest and that they would be together for the rest of their lives. It was her fault, really. She did not answer Carson. She lowered her eyes, and tears continued to flow from her eyes down her face, seemingly endles

Everly left. Her only possession was two black clothes with her in total. It was a cold November night in Cannesville. She still felt cold when she put on both black cotton clothes. She walked slowly down the noisy street. The hustle and bustle of the world had nothing to do with her. She walked from the suburb to the urban area for a long time until the world returned to silence. She paused for a moment and reached out to catch a snowflake. It was snowing. It snowed early this year in Cannesville. She pursed her lips and turned seven or eight corners. She walked through a long alley and came to the run-down house at the end of it. She could hear the faint cough coming from it. She took out the envelope that she had been carefully hiding, took out two pieces from it, and pushed the rest into the house through the crack of the door. She then turned around and quickly ran away. About three minutes later, the door was opened, and an old woman came out with the envelope in

A week later, Carson once again stood in front of the window of the study as the butler walked up to him. "Sir, I've arranged a job for Miss Pettis as you ordered, and she will only be paid one-third of the salary of an ordinary worker. What do you think?" The butler's voice came through, but Carson did not answer. He pressed his lips tightly and looked at the snow outside. "Had she realized her mistake?" He asked again after a long while, "Did she come to you?" "No," the butler answered. After a moment of silence, he opened his mouth again. "What is she doing?" His voice was full of suppressed anger. "Handling and moving the fresh seafood at the docks," the butler answered. He glanced at the butler, who guiltily lowered his head. He then picked up the car key. … The whole city was still sleeping at 4 o'clock in the morning. The lights were on at the docks in Cannesville. "Two more boxes of sea fish are here. Everly, go and deal with them!" The leader shouted. "

Tears streamed down her cheeks, but she did not stop working. She just put the dead fish aside and continued to catch other fish. She cried non-stop until someone grabbed her wrist and pulled her up. She saw his face through the tears in her eyes. Everly began to struggle away after catching a glance of who it was. "Let me go!" Her voice was low and hoarse, on the verge of cracking. The blood on her hand dripping onto the back of his hand had angered him further. She would rather work in a place like this than admit her mistakes? She would rather fake her death to get out of prison and rely on some other men than to yield to him! "What are you thinking?" He scolded her. His grip on her wrist was so hard that it was almost crushing her bones. When he found that she was still staring at the fish, the rage in him burned brighter. "Everly, do you really love money so much?" Everly was stunned. She then looked at him, tears streaming down from her eyes. She looked miserable.

The car sank as he slid in to sit beside her. She immediately wiped the blood on the corner of her lip with her hands that were covered in blood that she had coughed up earlier. The door closed with a slam and the car started to move. She was completely unprepared for it and fell onto the car floor. The sky outside the car windows was gradually brightening. The car drove through the early morning mist. She looked up toward Carson, who was staring down at her at that moment. His cold eyes were filled with hatred as though she was maggot writhing on the ground!“Where are you taking me?!” She asked. He did not answer, merely looking at her coldly. His thoughts were unfathomable. The scenery through the car windows behind him shifted unceasingly. His features under the dim yellow glow of the streetlights as the car entered a tunnel made her feel a sense of deja vu.She recalled the first time she had a cry after being bullied, it seemed like he brought her home with the same method.

He spat out that sentence unswervingly then left. She used all her might to get up, hoping to catch the last beam of light before the door shut. However, the door shut firmly before her with a slam.“Open the door!” She called out hoarsely, reaching her hands out to knock the door relentlessly. Her voice echoed shrilly in the room, but no one answered. Another flash of lightning and thunder lit up the ground, covered in splotches of her blood and the walls covered in photos. She seemed to have returned to prison once again where those women would beat and kick her, stripping her of her coat before locking her in the bathroom for three days and three nights.“I beg you, please let me out…”She cried as she begged, beating against the door. It was exactly the same as it was back then. There was no response, in fact, she could almost hear the sound of their laughter ringing in her ears.“What about Miss Pettis? So many years have gone by and she was tired of saying this. It was the only truth she had left.“Everly Pettis! We have all the evidence that you killed my sister. This is the truth! They sentenced you to ten years back then and sneaking out like this is basically prison break!”Lisa’s shrill voice rang out, “Carson told me all about you. I promised him that I wouldn’t sue you if you admitted that you were wrong and were willing to learn from your mistakes. Or else, you can rot in prison for the rest of your life!”“I’ve done nothing wrong.” Her gaze was unfocused as she repeated that line, just as she did countless times over the past four years.“You!”Lisa grabbed her and tried to hit her but stopped just before she touched Everly’s face. She threw Everly against the wall. Everly watched as Lisa cried toward the person who stood coldly to one side, observing everything. “I’m sorry, Carson. I… As soon as I think about my sister…”Everly watched as Lisa’s tears fell onto his

"How do you know if they have contact in private?" The man asked as their car was waiting for a green light. The man's consecutive retorts annoyed Lisa. She looked in the rearview mirror at the man with chill eyes. "What do you mean? Are you trying to deliberately piss me off?" "No." The man replied. Then he paused for a few seconds and changed the subject. "So what are you going to do next?" 'Let Everly crash down to the hell!' During these days all their tactics were covert. They only took some subtle moves to test Carson, to see what was in Carson's mind. Now that Lisa had learned about it, then the next step she was up to was to put Everly through hell! With the clothes in her hand, she got into the car and changed her clothes. The clothes were very simple, which were just a big white T-shirt and a pair of casual shorts. Looking at the clothes, she couldn't help wondering what Carson and Oliver would wear. She walked out, with her mind wandering. She saw Carson and Oliver not far away, both of whom were wearing a white vest and a pair of shorts to their knees. The color and style of their clothes were the same, except for the size. They two seemed to be talking about something, with buckets in their hands. Carson held a big bucket while Oliver held a small one. There was another bucket on the ground, obviously prepared for Everly.Noticing her coming, Oliver turned around and looked at her. Just a few seconds later, he sat down on a small rock and pointed to the big mud puddle beside him. "Aunt Violet, I just fell into it."Everly glanced in the direction that Oliver pointed to. There was indeed a mud puddle and a human shape was still there. Oliver's father just wiped his face. Otherwise, he could not be recognized.Looking at him sitting on that small rock and his aggrieved look, Everly thought he was so cute and couldn’t help laughing out loud, "Puff..."Hearing her laugh, Oliver turned his head.
