NINA’S POV
I wake up slowly. Although I am awake, I still struggle to open my eyes.
I feel the pain in my body before I take notice of the beeping sound next to me. I realise that I am in hospital before I manage to open my eyes.
My head hurts. A lot. My eyesight is blurry and I instantly feel frustrated. I can feel the frustration build up in my chest and the beeping sound next to my bed becomes more urgent.
I hear footsteps coming into my room, too many footsteps to be just one person. I turn my head towards the sound of the footsteps but my neck protests violently. I groan.
I feel an icy cold hand on my arm.
“Don’t worry, Honey. You are in good hands.” A young female voice tells me.
I can see someone moving around my bed, although my sight is still out of focus.
“There you go.” The young voice tells me. I want to ask her what she is talking about but I suddenly feel overwhelmed with tiredness. I close my eyes and drift off into the darkness. There is no pain in the darkness.

“Don’t be ridiculous. You don’t even know the girl.” Angry hushed male voice says.
“She’s not just any girl.” Frustrated hushed male voice says.
“This is the worst time for you to do this! You know it is time for us to go.” Angry voice says in a less hushed voice.
“This doesn’t concern you! I can hang back for a year. I do not dictate what you are allowed to do. Please show me the same common courtesy”. Frustrated voice, also less hushed.
“Or what?” Angry voice, even angrier and not hushed at all anymore.
“Are you pushing me to pull rank on you?” Frustrated voice, now very calm. Not hushed but very soft spoken.
Silence.
“I fucking hate you!” Angry voice, not hushed at all. Footsteps angrily walking out of the room.
Silence.
“Is everything alright in here?” Soft spoken female voice.
“Everything is fine.” Frustrated male voice. Clearly lying.

I feel the pain in my arm before I feel the pain in my head. I groan.
I try to open my eyes again. It seems easier today. My vision blurs but then clears up quickly.
I am definitely in a hospital bed. A very fancy hospital bed. I immediately start to panic. My heart monitor next to my bed starts to beep quicker again.
A nurse quickly rushes to my bed and tries to soothe me with her words while she adjusts my medication in my drip. Once again tiredness overwhelms me and I fall asleep.

“All arrangements have been made. She will move as soon as she wakes up.” It is the same voice that once sounded very frustrated. Today there is no frustration. He is in control.
“Thank you, Sir.” The female voice sounds a bit like she is crooning. “I will make sure your wife is discharged the moment she opens her eyes.”
I try to open my eyes. My eyelids are heavy and my eyes are burning. The heart monitor next to my bed is absolutely quiet. I force my eyes open and try to look towards where the monitor was before. I am not connected to anything anymore. I lift my hands to look at them. My vision clears up and I am able to focus on the room around me.
I groan when I realise that I am still in a room that I do not recognise.
The nurse rushes to my side.
“Good morning, Mrs Ross.” The young female nurse tells me.
Mrs Ross? Is that my name? It doesn’t sound familiar. I feel to tired to keep thinking about it.
A man comes into the room. He stands at the end of my bed and looks at me. He has a piercing stare and it feels like he is looking directly into my soul. My eyes wander to his lips. His square jawline. His dark hair. He is very attractive.
His phone rings, he answers it and leaves the room as he does.
“We will get you ready and out of here in no time.” The nurse tells me and then also leaves the room.
A short while later another nurse comes in with a wheelchair. I am quickly helped into the chair and taken outside to where a large black car is waiting for me. The driver opens the back door and I am promptly helped into the back seat. Just before the driver closes the door the nurses turn to walk back into the hospital. I hear the one nurse tell the other nurse that I must be the luckiest woman in the world.
I frown at her. I try to think if I am lucky? I must be lucky. She said so.
The car pulls away and I look to my right. My eyes lock with the man that was in my room earlier.
His piercing stare bores into my soul. How does he do that?
“How are you feeling?” He asks in a short tone. He doesn’t sound very friendly.
“I… er…I am ok.” I tell him. It comes out sounding more like a question than an answer.
There is a hard thud on my window. I quickly look towards where the sound came from. A man is walking beside my window with a camera right up against the window. The man next to me swears under his breath.
“Get us out of here!” he barks to the driver.
The car speeds up and the man with the camera is left behind in the street.
The rest of the ride is in silence. We pull up to large iron gates that open electronically. The driver enters through the gates and takes us up to a very large house. I look at the house in awe. This doesn’t look familiar, but it is a beautiful house.
A man comes out of the house and walks straight to my door. He opens the door and helps me out of the car. I look over the roof of the car to the man that gets out on the other side. He has a very cold stare that keeps falling on me. For a moment I wonder if I did something to anger him.
The man walks past me up the stairs, into the house and disappears. The young lady standing next to me, smiles sweetly.
“Come, let me get you settled.” She tells me and holds her arm for me to hook into. She is wearing a black dress with a white apron. On my way to the room where she takes me, I see about four more ladies dressed the way she is.
“There are a lot of help available in this house.” She whispers sweetly. “Please don’t be afraid to call any of us should you need anything.”
I smile at her but do not say anything.
Once we reach the top of the stairs, I am tired and out of breath. I hold onto the railing and try to catch my breath while the girl patiently stands next to me. She rubs my hand that is hooked into the crook of her elbow.
“That door,” she says, pointing to the closest door to us, “is the door to your room. We are almost there. Tell me when you are ready, and I will help you to your bed.”
The thought of being able to lay on a bed and rest a bit sounds very appealing. I nod at her and gather as much strength as I can to head towards the room. A few moments later she helps me onto the bed and tells me that she will bring me something to drink soon. She leaves the room and closes the door behind her.
I lay on the large bed looking at the room around me. Nothing seems familiar. The room is decorated in white and baby blues. It is soothing and calming to be in this room. The air-conditioning is set just right. It is comfortable. I close my eyes and almost immediately fall asleep.
When I open my eyes again the room is in complete darkness. I reach towards the bedside table. I am sure I noticed a bed lamp there earlier. I find the switch and switch the lamp on. The house is very quiet.
I slowly walk to the door and open it slightly. There is light at the bottom of the stairs. I open the door a bit further, almost expecting it to squeak. It doesn’t. I step out of the room and walk to the railing, looking over it to see if there is anyone still awake in this house.
“You brought her to this house? You have completely lost all your senses!” an angry male voice shout.
“I know exactly what I am doing.” Another male voice, which I have now come to recognise as the man with the intense stare, answers him.
“There are four of us, Mark! You should discuss this with us. We have a plan that never fails and now you are deliberately putting us all in danger.” The first angry voice shouts.
The man with the intense stare’s name is Mark. I note to myself. My heart does a sudden flip. What a strange reaction to a name. I think of Mark’s bright green eyes. I cannot exactly put my finger on the intensity of his stare. Is it anger? Is he irritated?
There is a loud thud coming from the room where the voices are. In my mind’s eye I can only imagine that Mark banged his fists on his table.
“This is not up for discussion!”
MARK’S POV After Anthony stormed out of the house, slamming doors and swearing out loud all the way, I loosen my tie and the top button of my shirt. It has been a long and taxing day. I pour myself a Bourbon and slowly make my way to my room. The girl has been in my house since this morning, but I haven’t seen her since the car ride over here. I had to get away from her. I shake my head at the thought. Imagine that. A man like me, running away from a fragile little thing like her. As I take the first step towards the second floor, I notice a quick movement on the top platform. She was there. She ran to her room. Good. She should be scared of me. It’s good that she has some sense of self preservation. I was beginning to think that she has no way of knowing when she needs to run. I reach the top of the stairs and look at her bedroom door. How the hell can one man be so torn? I want to go into that room and walk right up to her. That would be the worst thing I could do, though. I sho

MARK’S POVI finish my Bourbon and set the glass back on the tray.I picked her up from the staircase and placed her on the bed and left. I have been avoiding her ever since. Holding her in my arms, brought back memories of the past that I have worked very hard to forget.Clive is right. Cole is going to fight to get to her and I will not be able to stop him. The worst part is that she is nothing what Cole would expect. The girl she resembles died many years ago. They only look alike. They are worlds apart from each other when it comes to personality.Luckily, Clive was able to see this in during the little encounter they had this morning. He could see that it is not the same girl they all use to know. I pour myself another Bourbon and down it quickly.Cole is ruthless. He does not ask questions. He will take her and when I find her again, she will be broken. How do I protect her against my own flesh and blood. I
MARK’S POVI throw myself into every problem that presents itself at the office. Making things happen faster than they usually do. By the time it is time to go home, I am tired and ready to call it a day.I tried not to think of her at all, but it turned out to be a futile goal. She was in my head all day. Usually, I would find it easy to walk away from any situation. Today, the thought of her heart being broken because I dropped her outside my room, haunts me.I made her feel rejected. What if she cried all day? What if she hates me? Or worse, what if she left?I gather my things and quickly leave the office. The staff caught on that I was on fire today and started coming to me with their most difficult clients and problems, which I, of course, sorted in minutes. The last thing I want now, is another problem to solve. I want to get home. I want to see how much damage I have done.On my drive home, my mind starts to argue wi
NINA’S POVNot the right time? What is this man talking about?I get up from my seat and make my way up to my room. I spent the day going through the wardrobe that was chosen for me. There are a lot of things I love in it, and then there are a lot of things I think Mark would love. There was a whole section of nightwear. Some of it very skimpy if I may say so.I decide to take a long bath and then try on some of the sexier nightwear. After all, I sleep alone and may as well feel good while I am doing so.I run a hot bath and fill it with bubbles and essential oils.I pin my hair up and sink into the bath, letting the bubbles cover my body. I close my eyes and drift off a bit. I wake a few moments later. The water is still somewhat hot, so it couldn’t have been too long that I have fallen asleep.I wash myself and get out of the bath. I reach for the towel and then remember Mark coming ou
NINA’S POVI stretch out lazily checking my wrist watch. It is nearly ten in the morning. I look around me to find that I am still in Mark’s bed. I smile to myself. This morning started off a lot in the same way last night ended, with the added bonus of a long lazy shower together.I slide off the bed, pick my robe up and slip it on. I walk to my room and head straight into the shower. I take a long shower, relaxing in the hot stream of water. When I exit the bathroom, completely naked as I have now decided is the best way to exit a bathroom after a hot shower, there is a soft knock on the door.I walk to the door and hide behind it while opening it just enough to look through. It is Florence.“Morning” Florence greets me with a large smile. Seeing that it is her, I open the door a little more but still hide my nakedness behind it.“Good morning.” I greet her in r
NINA’S POVMark takes two quick steps towards Cole. He grabs him by the back of the neck and pulls him backwards. Cole looks surprised as he falls back. The moment he lets go of me, it feels like he loosened a grip around my neck. I take a deep breath to clear my mind.I see Mark bend down and grab Cole by the chest. He says nothing. He pulls him to his feet and takes a step towards the door with Cole still in his grip. He throws Cole out of the study. I am amazed at the strength Mark has. Cole lands on his back and slides on the floor. Mark makes his way purposefully towards Cole. I can see that this could go on all day.Cole quickly gets to his feet and cocks his head. I hear his neck crack. He smiles at Mark who is now standing in front of Cole in a threatening manner. His fists are clenched and I cannot even imagine what the look on his face must be like. He seems very angry from where I am standing. I feel so ashamed. Why couldn&rsqu
ANTHONY’S POV I clasp my hands together in front of my chest and turn to the wide-eyed girl and smile. She looks utterly bewildered. This is the strangest thing she has ever seen, for sure. I look at her and decide that there is only one way to handle this. Straightforward and blunt. As I always am anyway.“Very well. How are we going to handle this?” I ask her while still smiling. I thought smiling would ease the tension but it seems that she is only more bewildered. She looks at me with her big doe eyes. She then focuses her eyes on where Cole laid for a while, technically dead. Her eyes shift to the broken railing where Cole fell off the second floor. Finally, she shifts her focus back to me. She doesn’t say a word. I will have to rephrase the question.“Are you going to start screaming?” I ask her. More direct than that, I really cannot be. That is the only thing I don’t really want right now. Screaming women irritate me. They are so difficult to talk to. She looks at me a
I sit crossed legged on my bed and stare at the box for a while. Of course, I know what is inside. I don’t really need to open it. What frustrates me most, is that I know that I will open it and I will not have any more answers than I had before I opened it. I open the box slowly and set the lid on the bed next to me. I take a deep breath and let it out in a rush. Inside the box is the little vile that Mark gave me with the potion in. Next to the little vile is the business card he gave me with the contact details of his secretary. The memory of his words leaves another stab in my heart. He basically told me to contact her, not him. Frustration builds up in my chest again. I had a connection with Mark. It disappeared within seconds and I couldn’t even get an explanation for it. I feel over emotional today. Tears well up in my eyes. I take the little vile in my hand and roll it the way I did the night he gave it to me. It feels exactly the same. There is no difference in weight. I op
I don’t sleep well that night. My mind keeps going through everything that happened. The note. The break in. The trip here. The building. The potion. Mark’s eyes. His coldness. I know I need sleep because I will have to get my life in order tomorrow. I just cannot seem to get my mind to rest. I get up to take another hot shower. After drying my hair I feel exhausted and finally fall asleep when I lay my head down. When I wake the next morning, I find that the sun just started shining into my room. I get up quickly and get dressed. I exit the room to go to the kitchen where I heard a noise earlier. Mark is standing behind the counter, reading a newspaper while drinking a cup of coffee. He barely takes notice of me. When he quickly flicks his eyes up to see who entered the room he lets out a irritated sigh. “Are you still here?” he asks in a bored tone. My heart instantly twists into a tight knot of pain. Why is he being so cold towards me. “Well, you said I can stay here as long as
Mark looks at me intently. He sets his mug down and touches his fingertips together.“A few centuries ago, there was a girl that looked exactly like you.” Mark starts to tell me. He pauses a few seconds to let it sink in. “Her name was June. We met her at a fundraiser and I immediately fell for her. Cole also fell for her but I never for one second thought he fell that hard.”Mark sucks in a deep breath and lets it out.“I started pursuing June and she enjoyed my company. I later found out that Cole was pursuing her also. She didn’t have the heart to hurt anyone so she tried her best to keep both of us at arm’s length. This kept on for quite some time.” He seems to think for a few seconds before continuing.“Cole befriended an old witch.” Mark looks as me and shakes his head. “Don’t ever, for one second, think you can really be friends with a witch. They always, only take care of themselves. Cole needed her to help him make June choose him over me. She told him all magic always comes
The paper is old and there is a six-digit number written on it. I turn the paper over in my hand. There is nothing else written on it. I immediately feel irritated. I shove the piece of paper back into the envelope and turn the envelope around to look at the writing in front. My eye catches the date stamp on the envelope. It was posted the day I was discharged from hospital. This cryptic note was posted before the newspapers erroneously printed that I was Mrs Ross. This only unsettles me more. This person knows more than anyone else that I am not Mrs Ross. I walk to my handbag and shove the envelope into it angrily. I am not the biggest fan of mysteries. I hardly ever watch mystery movies and now I have to deal with this in real life. I feel irritated.I finish up and go to bed. I still feel unsettled when I fall asleep.I wake with a startle in the middle of the night. I lay awake staring wide-eyed into the darkness trying to listen to what it is that woke me up. There is a scraping
NINA’S POVGreg walks into the office.“Seems that there have been some altercations here this morning.” He states as he takes a seat next to me. He gives me a grim look before he focuses his attention on Anthony.“This only forces us to fall into plan quicker than expected.” He tells him.Anthony presses his lips together and nods. He heaves a deep sigh and gets up from his seat.“Nina, you will need to excuse us. We have urgent matters to attend to.” Anthony tells me.I look at Greg and then at Anthony. I am being excused. They want me to leave the room. I don’t have any answers yet. I get up slowly and walk out of the room. Just as I exit the door, I hear Greg telling Anthony that Mark has booked a one-way ticket out of the country.I walk up the steps quickly. What the hell is going on? Is he not even coming back? He just walked out the door and booked a one-way ticket? I am stunned.I walk into my room and for a moment I have no idea what I need to do. I am still standing in the
