ZOEY
I USED TO BELIEVE MY FAMILY WAS PERFECT WHEN I WAS A CHILD. My father is attractive, dependable, and our breadwinner. And then there's my mother, the lovely and wonderful stay-at-home mom.
Things were going smoothly. We are happy. My loved ones adore me.
Mom and Dad had me at the age of twenty. My parents were too young, and their lives began, but my father was a man of his words. So, when my mother announced that she was pregnant with me, Dad did not flee but instead assumed responsibility for my mother and me.
He was a wonderful, devoted father. Dad and mom's family helped them raise me, so it wasn't difficult for them. I admit that I was exposed to almost everything growing up. My parents come from wealthy families. Nonetheless, my parents instilled in me the importance of not being spoiled.
I consider myself one of the fortunate children because my parents were exceptional. They were flawless, in my opinion.
Back then, I was a joyful kid. We always travel to new places, both domestic and foreign. Especially after my father became a pilot. My mother also completed her culinary degree, but she chose to be a full-time housewife because she wanted to oversee my father and me.
I was ecstatic. I couldn't have wished for anything better.
I have lovely classmates back at school. I used to be quite popular in elementary school. Nobody ever bullied me, and everyone adored me. My life was turned upside down when my mother died in middle school.

"GET OUT OF THE WAY, mad girl," someone said, jolting me out of my reverie.
She shoved me with her shoulder before I could react and move out of her way. Push me on purpose. I would have fallen backward on the floor if it hadn't been for someone supporting my back.
"Watch where you're going, Camila; you don't own the hallway," Nova cautioned.
She is the one who catches me, and Camila is the one who slams me. I took a deep breath and came to a halt in front of Nova. I don't want her to get into any mischief.
"The mad girl was in my way, and now you're telling me to watch where I was going? Are you blind?!" Camila yelled at us, as scandalous as she is.
"Watch your tongue, bitch; I'll rip it off," Stella, her minion, said as she approached Nova and gave her a warning look.
"Try me," Nova, who isn't afraid of these bullies, says to the more petite girl.
Stella is an aggressive fighter, even though her opponents are taller. Stella has a reputation for being extremely volatile. That is, she is the one who is always doing the grunt work for the group.
"C-Con, stop. Let's go. We're going to be late." I drew Nova, but she was still staring at Stella.
Camila was smirking, and my step-sister, standing next to her, was staring at us as usual. Every time her so-called friends bully me, she'll be the audience. But I can't say I blame her. I can see where she's coming from.
We're attracting some attention from the students, and it'll not be suitable for us if a teacher notices us. It's the first day of junior year, and I don't want to make a wrong first impression.
"Stell, Miss Peyton is coming this way; let's go," one of the bully's friends, Naomi, pulled the more petite girl. She was still refusing to budge, as was Nova. I believe there will be a commotion with just a slight push on both.
What should I do?
"Let's go, Stell. They're not worth it. Let's adjust because we're good girls," Camila said as she marched in the opposite direction.
Stella signed her name with two fingers pointing from her eyes to Nova before leaving. She's telling Nova that she's keeping an eye on her.
Nova smirked and gave a despicable expression. We're in a lot of trouble, thank you very much. Other students watching us earlier pretended and returned to what they were doing before the alleged "fight."
When they passed by Miss Peyton, the bullies greeted her as an angel. Angels who are self-important. I almost rolled my eyes, but I held back, especially when Olivia returned my gaze. I can see her trying to suppress her feelings about what happened, but I know deep down that she is deeply concerned about what Camila did. Camila's hit was brutal, and it hurts my shoulder a little, but it's nothing compared to what she's done to me in the past.
I had been her sworn enemy since middle school.
"Are you alright?" Nova inquired.
"Yeah, I'm fine," I said, checking on her.
She replied, "I'm fine." Miss Peyton came in just as she was about to say something.
The teacher inquired, "Is everything all right here?"
"Yes, ma'am," I replied, a smile on my face.
"Are you certain, Zoey?" she inquired again.
"Okay, ma'am. You have nothing to worry about, right, Nova?" I nodded to my best friend. Miss Peyton turned to face Nova.
"That's right, that's ma'am. It's the first day of school, so we greet each other; we're all close friends who missed each other over the break, right?"
Argh. Nova.
"Y-yes," was an awkward response from the students in the hallway.
"All right," the teacher said, even though she appeared unconvinced. "Please prepare for the first period, which will begin soon. It will be in room 3B. See you all there," Miss Peyton said as she walked away.
With the pressure, I nearly passed out. But no, that would not be very comfortable. It's the first day, and if I pass out, Camila and the other students will have even more reason to bully me. As a result, I must refuse to give them what they desire.
~*~
WE ARE JUNIORS NOW, and it seems like we were on summer vacation only yesterday. I had a great time doing things last summer. I was able to catch up with Nova. But we mostly hung out at her house because I was guarding Olivia's reputation. Her sister graduated, and I even went to their family dinner. That's how close we've gotten.
Back to Olivia, no one at school is aware of our actual relationship, and I understand why she chose to conceal it. It was challenging to be bullied, and I adore my step-sister. I only want her to be content.
Since Mom Victoria and Olivia came into our lives, I've seen how my father has returned to life and is genuinely happy. So when he said he wanted to remarry his first love, I immediately supported him.
It was time for us to move on as well. So I didn't stop Dad from pursuing the happiness he deserves. Life has been blissful since then.
It didn't bother me that Olivia hid our real relationship from everyone at school. Aside from knowing the valid reason for it, I don't want her to have difficulty being the prey of the bullies.
Olivia is now becoming quite successful and well-known in school. Last year, she was promoted to cheer captain, and this year, they were trying to persuade her to run for President of the Student Council (SC). I'm thrilled for her.
Nova was one of my best friends in elementary school, and she was sent to South Korea to study and live with her grandparents before middle school started. But she did return last year, which was a blessing.
I began to be bullied after Nova left. It was immediately following my mother's death.
Returning to the present, we arrived at the room mentioned by Miss Peyton before the first period. Other students were conversing and inquiring about their summer vacations. Nova was fiddling with her phone. The charmer bullies were bragging about their I*******m posts and vacations.
Me? I had my gaze fixed on the outside of the window. I'm not looking at anyone in particular. I listened to Sza's song I Hate U while reminiscing about what I did last summer with my AirPods. Because the first-period teacher has not yet arrived, there is still time to procrastinate.
Apart from that, I'm trying to catch up with Nova. My family traveled extensively outside of the country. That's one of the advantages of being the child of a pilot and a flight attendant.
Apart from that, we went to see my grandparents in Canada before the summer ended. We traveled to General Santos City to visit Mom Victoria's parents. It was Olivia's second encounter with her grandparents. I first met them at the wedding of Dad and Mom Victoria. We got along fine because the oldies were as lovely as Mom Victoria.
We had a great time island hopping and visiting the famous Glan Saranggani. Outside of the country, the beaches were fantastic, but I can also say that the beaches in Glan Saranggani were fantastic. Then I became acquainted with Olivia's relatives and cousins. It was a lot of fun. The best part was that we were finished. That was the most crucial aspect for me.
When I felt Nova's soft nudge on my arms, I was zoning out. Then I noticed Miss Peyton speaking in front of the class, and everyone was already paying attention to her. I removed my AirPods from my ear and turned them off smoothly. I slid it into the side pocket of my uniform.
"New classmate..." Miss Peyton said after I turned off my AirPods. We appear to have gained a new classmate. A lovely blond girl approached the teacher and introduced herself. She, like Nova, appears Korean, but when she spoke, her accent was... Wow!
"Hello, everyone. My name is Aubrey Maya Park, and I hope to get along. Please take care of me," she said in a British accent. I'm not sure, but it sounded like a British accent.
Nice. Sexy. What exactly did I say?
"Don't worry, Aubrey; I'll take care of you," Jack, a Playboy classmate, interrupted. That's typical of him.
Aubrey just smiled as my classmates teased them. I must say, she's a lovely young lady.
"You're drooling," Nova said quietly.
"What? No," I said flatly. I was admiring a lovely lady.
"Yeah, right," she teased but quickly stopped.
Aubrey was asked to sit near the front of our row by the teacher. Then I'm not sure if I saw it correctly because Aubrey gave a quick smirk in the direction of the bully's seat. My gaze was drawn to Olivia, who is now looking down and appears to be in distress.
Olivia and I have only known each other for three years, but we live together, and I know everything there is to know about her. She's just easy to read, and she acts rugged and mighty in front of everyone at school.
But why doesn't she seem at ease with Aubrey? Is it possible that they've met before?
Aubrey resumed her friendly smiling face after that quick smirk. Oh no, she appears to be a bother—another duplicitous individual.
I know I shouldn't make snap judgments, but I've seen her kind before, and I'm hoping my assumptions are incorrect.
The first class went as smoothly as it always does. Miss Peyton was fantastic as usual. This year, she is our Math teacher. Miss Peyton was said to be an excellent teacher, and I have demonstrated that she was excellent and intelligent. You could say that I excel academically, catch up quickly, and unexpectedly learn a lot from the teacher.
I was so focused on the lecture that I forgot about my surroundings. I enjoy both studying and learning. I may not be good at extracurricular activities, but you can count on me when it comes to academics.
Math was the next subject after the class. We sat in the same chair because we were in the same room. I was scribbling in my notebook when I noticed someone staring at me. When I looked in their direction, I noticed Olivia staring at me. I resisted the urge to smile and wave at her, especially since she wasn't looking at me. She was staring at the person conversing with Nova in front of me.
Olivia was staring at Aubrey intently. It's more glaring. I noticed her fists balling as well. What's the matter with her?
Olivia's behavior diverted my attention for a while, but before the next class began, my step-sister resumed her two-faced persona. The Olivia who is calm, high, and mighty.
I know she's weird already, but she was cutely strange to me. But how about right now? It was far from cute. Olivia has a frightening version of herself, which I rarely see.
I'll check with her later at home. Something fishy is afoot.
ZOEY "WELCOME HOME. You look so tired. You must be starving," I said to Olivia, who appeared in the kitchen next to the door. Her head and shoulders are bowed. She appears to have used up all of her energy today. "Sit down," I told her. She wouldn't budge, so I approached her and drew her to the nearest chair at the kitchen counter. "Eat first, then rest," I said, about to leave because I was going to prepare her food, but she drew me closer and hugged me from behind. I can feel her head resting on my back. There's that tingly sensation all over again. Ha! I like what Olivia is doing, but I'm also feeling guilty. "I'm so tired, Zola," she's the only one who addresses me as such. She said it was a combination of my first and last names. Olivia desired to stand out from the
ZOEY ELECTION DAY. "Interesting. Miss Queen Bee appears to be winning this election as well," Nova said as she handed me a box of cold pineapple juice. "Thank you," I said. I drank the box through the straw. "Ah, pineapple juice is delicious!" I exclaimed. "I know, that's why we're friends; we both like pineapple juice," Nova agreed. We clapped our pineapple juice boxes as if they were wine glasses. We are currently in the gym, counting and validating the ballots from today's election of new sets of SC. We were far away from the gym stage where the teachers were counting votes, but a large LED screen displayed the automatic updates of the votes. I am delighted to see Olivia advancing in the polls. She's truly unique.
ZOEY "CONGRATULATIONS, Vi!" I exclaimed as she walked into the house, holding a mini cake in my hand. She was stunned for a moment, but she smiled broadly when she realized what I was doing. "This is for me? Aww, you are so sweet," she said as she closed the door and hugged me. Despite hanging out with Aubrey and Nova, I still went home first. Olivia was out with the charmer bullies earlier, and they said they were going to celebrate, so she's a little late. My parents aren't here, but we don't have a curfew, so that's fine. "Thank you; are you drunk?" I inquired as I smelled her breath. I don't drink alcohol, but I recognize the aroma.
ZOEY "WHERE IS AUBREY?" I inquire discreetly. We were in our first-period class of the day, and her seat was still vacant. "She might be late," she said quietly. "All right," I replied. The teacher was calling names, but Aubrey was still not present. She was marked absent because she did not arrive until the end of the first period. Nova replied, "I'll call her." I was just staring at her, waiting for Aubrey to pick up the phone. Aubrey isn't a slacker, so we're concerned. She may be a little rowdy and upbeat, but she has never missed a single class since she transferred. This is the first time she has done anything like this. Fortun
ZOEY "DO YOU WANT TO COME TO MY PLACE ON FRIDAY NIGHT? Perhaps a sleepover?" Nova invited. We walked down the hallway during our free period, which meant we had to go to our respective clubs. I don't want to join these clubs, but I need them for my portfolio as part of my college application preparation. In a nutshell, I don't have a choice. By the way, I am a member of the Academic Club. Where else will I be? Anyway, the debate team was recruiting me, but I declined. Aside from the Academic Club, I am an Associate Editor for the student newspaper and have another club that I keep hidden from everyone. Yes, everyone. No one knows about it, and I have no intention of keeping it from them, but it just happened, and I'm not sure why I kept it a secret until now. At the moment, only one person at school is aware of it. Bu
OLIVIA "I DIDN'T realize you were already here," I said as I approached her bed. Yes, I'm talking to Zoey, who is lying down on her bed with her back to me. I stormed into her room without even knocking. We were used to it. "I was expecting you, but I was so tired that I didn't realize I had already fallen asleep. Zola, are you sleeping right now?" I kept walking near her bed. I lay down beside her when I reached her bed. I hugged her behind her back. Zola's back is extremely comfortable. And she appears to be sleeping, which is why she isn't responding. She might be exhausted as well. Zola is also very busy these days. She mentioned the Local Inter-School Quiz Bee competition to me a few days ago, and I believe that's what's keeping her busy these days. I came here to ex
OLIVIA "WHAT'S WRONG, Oli?" Naomi enquired. "Huh?" I decided to look at her. I was resting my chin on my left hand and didn't bother to change my position. "You don't appear to be in the best of spirits these days." "Am I?" "Yeah. Do you already have feelings for Will?" Stella jumped in. She was teasing me yet again. If I'm not mistaken, she's the one who has feelings for Will. We are currently in my assigned office in the SC room. It was a closed-door room, and there were no other members of the SC present at the time, so they were free to roam. I was sitting on the one-seat couch and had no idea I was zoning out.
ZOEY "WHERE ARE WE GOING?" I asked the person beside me, wide-eyed, smiling at me. It was strange to see her in this state, but I can see the sincerity in her actions. "We're going to get Con-con in her place," she replied. She appears to be overjoyed. "Really? Wow. So you were successful in persuading her?" "Ella, you underestimate my persuasion skills. Just to let you know, that's one of the skills I still have to this day." She boasted. I laughed. "I am not dismissive of it. I was pretty convinced when you said Con-con was coming with us," I told her. She gave a thumbs up and proudly tapped her chest.
"LEWIS," the teacher called Zoey's last name.Camila looked behind her and saw that Zoey was not in her seat.Aubrey was admiring Nova's beauty. She had no idea Zoey was missing."Lewis?" the teacher inquired once more. Everyone in the room is now staring at Zoey's seat. It was deserted. "Scott, did you see your best friend? Where has she gone?""I'm not sure, teacher. Perhaps she's in the restroom. You know, answering nature's call," Nova tried to laugh, but she was getting nervous. She has a bad feeling about Zoey's absence."Perhaps," the teacher replied. "Okay, let's go back to our previous lesson. Lewis can catch up later."The teacher continued the lecture,
"YOU ARE GOING TO STUDY IN SEOUL AFTER GRADE SCHOOL," Dad said. We're having dinner quietly right now, and then he comes in with this kind of news. "Dad? Seriously?" With a sour tone, I said. I stopped cutting the steak on my plate. "I'm serious, Con. You are not taking your studies seriously. You keep slacking. It would help if you were with your grandparents. Maybe they can tame you there," He added without looking at me. He kept eating casually. He had no idea his words were piercing my veins. It's as if someone is slowly and painfully cutting me. "Please, Dad... Mom. I will put in a lot of effort. I'm going to study very hard. I promise," I begged them. I looked at Mom, pleading for help. Mom shook h
ZOEY STARING at my reflection on the whole body mirror, I sighed with satisfaction at what I was seeing. I was wearing a black casual dress, above the knee, no sleeves, and slightly showing the top of her chest. My shoulder-length black hair formed in beach wavy curls. My beautiful partner nicely did my make-up. I paired the dress I was wearing with my 2 inches heels, pearls, and crystal black bow kitten. It was a new gift from my stepmother. This is the second time I will wear this kind of clothes. The first time was when my father remarried four years ago to a wonderful woman who brought the gorgeous person I have ever known in my life. Anyway, it's my graduation day today, and I was excited. Two years have quickly passed, and here we are now. I am graduating as a valedictorian despite the hardships I encountered du
ZOEY "AS THE SCRIPTURE SAID IN ROMANS 8:38-39 - For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord," said the parish father. He conducts Olivia's father's eulogy before being buried on the ground. Yes, we are here for Olivia's father's funeral at the cemetery. "Kenneth, our beloved brother, is now at our father's side. There will be no pain. There will be no illness there. Dear Lord, I cry for those of us who have been left behind, for the lonely ones who have hollows in our hearts. I pray You to comfort us, give, restore hope, and lavish us with family and belonging. Meet us in the depths of our grief with Yourself. I pray for everyone's safety. We have complete faith in your methods. Amen."
OLIVIA PRACTICE WAS COMPLETED, and as Zoey had promised, she watched us practice. I was eager to be with her after it was finished, so I showered quickly. Unfortunately, Camila beat me to it, even though I quickly fixed myself. She was now in the hallway with Zoey. They were talking, and I'm not sure if it was funny, but Camila kept laughing while occasionally touching Zoey's arms. Camila is getting ahead of me. And, despite Camila's confession to Zoey, they appear to be getting closer. Does this imply that they are now dating? "Hello there, Oli. You appear to have intended to murder someone," Naomi stated the obvious. I didn't notice she was walking with me towards Zoey and Camila, who were flirting at the time. "What? No!"
OLIVIA "WHAT DID YOU SAY?" I asked Zoey, who was still lying in the hospital bed. The bill was paid, but we are still waiting for the doctor's final opinion on Zoey's results and medication. "You heard me, Vi," she said firmly. "No! I'm afraid I must disagree. I'm not going down without a fight!" I was enraged by Zoey's calm demeanor in this situation. "Please, Uncle Zal, take action against those who abused Zoey. Don't let the police back down on the investigation." I was furious. I'm furious at those who have harmed Zoey. How dare they! Uncle Zaldy was deafeningly silent. He just gave me that sorry look. I looked to my mother for support, but she just shook her head as if to te
OLIVIA I DID NOT GET A LOT OF SLEEP LAST NIGHT, but I awoke early and asked Mom to drive me to the hospital, even if that was not the case. Early in the morning, we received a text message from Uncle Zaldy confirming that Zoey had awoken and was fine. I was relieved, but I needed to see if she was okay with my own eyes to calm my worried mind. We leave for the hospital as soon as Mom finishes cooking and preparing the food we'll bring to the hospital. We were in the car when I heard my mother speak. "Zoey will be fine, Vi. She's a brave young lady," she stated. I cast a glance her way. My mother was concentrating on driving, and her gaze was fixed on the road. She gave me a glance and a smile. In response, I nodded.
OLIVIAI WAS not with myself; even the paramedics came and took the lifeless Zoey to the ambulance. I was with her in the ambulance. Nova was with me as well. I held Zoey's hand, and Nova was patting my back slightly. The liquid coming from my eyes was not stopping. The paramedic had given Zoey the first aid the first time they got there, and when they said that Zoey was still alive, I was relieved. But she is still unconscious, so my anxiety grows again."Zo, please fight. You can do it. You are stronger than me, remember? S-so p-please," I felt that my words were choking me. I couldn't finish my words and started crying again."She'll be okay. Zoey will be okay," Nova said. Not a single tear will be seen in her eyes, but I know she's worried sick about Zoey, too. "Right? Sh
OLIVIA"ARE YOU going to confess to Zo-Zoey now, Camila?" I asked Camila directly because I had the opportunity. We're doing retouches in the Student Council's comfort room because the afternoon class starts soon. Naomi was also present. Stella, the walk-out queen, was nowhere to be found. But, as Naomi stated, we're leaving her alone for the time being because she needs time to process what Camila has just revealed to them.Stella should join the drama club instead, in my opinion. Why couldn't she stand by Camila?Anyway, back to where we are: we use this comfort room after lunch because the regular comfort rooms are full."I'm not sure. We've only recently re-established our friendship. And what if Zoey rejects me? That will be
