A BUBBLING sensation of a warm skin that submerges itself in a never-ending body of water. The cold sweeping of touch, which inevitably blows through the fabric.
I heaved a sigh."What are you thinking about?" My gaze moves slowly to the woman sitting in the living room, fries on the center table. She had such beautiful locks of blonde hair; a small doll-like face; porcelain fair skin; bright dark chocolate eyes with long black eyelashes; a small pointed nose; and full pinkish lips. She was munching away on some snacks atop the table while watching a horror movie."No, it's nothing, Ma'am," I say, and immediately turn my gaze away from her. This woman who is now lounging in the living room of this condominium is no one but the employer who has taken me from the streets.Compared to a beauty like her, I am like an ugly duckling mixed with the beautiful swans."Psh, if you're still thinking about the rent, I said, you won't need to worry about it. I'm not charging you with anything. You're my housekeeper," she tries to reassure me and then puts another fry inside of her mouth. "Now, why don't you sit beside me? I'm just waiting for my cousin to knock on the door. He'll be here in a few minutes."Truth be told, after the incident from earlier this morning, I woke up to the sound of knocking. The same man faced me the second time, and I looked like an idiot who did not know what to do.He said that I looked like someone who had just cried her eyes out and asked me if I was okay.Again, I slammed the door on his face.Meanwhile, Ma'am Bright appeared at the door in the pre-evening as expected. She was still wearing her school uniform and proceeded to dress up in casual wear in her room. Afterwards, she had her eyes on the television and snacks on the fridge the whole time and kept inviting me to watch a movie with her."A-Alright," I say, and then slowly walk in her direction. Despite a week having passed since we met each other, I still feel shy around her.She looks like someone who has come out of a fictional story with such beautiful features that I can't help but be mesmerized. Not only was her face an asset, but her whole body looked like a living doll with an hour-glass body, an average height of five feet four inches, and graceful etiquette."So, have you watched this movie before?" Bright points at the television while a woman who has long black hair jumps at its victim.I shook my head."Too bad, this is an old movie called Sadako, and she's always been famous in Japan as a lingering ghost," she narrates, and then looks at the television again."They say she has cursed millions of lives for she was not given eternal rest."My eyes move to stare at the woman on the television. It was only a horror movie made of an urban legend, but I saw myself in her.A small smile flashes across my lips."I see, that's unfortunate," I comment. Not long after our short movie marathon, just as Bright mentioned, a knock on the door took place. I was about to walk towards the entrance when she stopped me in my tracks and proceeded to open the door herself."Hello, Sammy!" Bright immediately exclaimed from the inside of the room. "If it isn't my good old cousin!" she added, and then, with a gaping smile, embraced someone from the other side of the door."My dear child, it has been a while since you visited us here." The familiar sound of the voice piqued my ears.Ma'am Bright slowly let the two people enter, only for me to freeze on my own two feet."Oh my, hello dear. We meet again," Amanda comments, and with a gentle smile she raises her lips and her eyes squint in delight."I hope you two have been good to my friend. It hasn't been long since she started staying here," Bright narrates and invites the two people towards the living room.As the man walks towards the room, our eyes lock for a second. There was a hint of glaring in his stare before he sat down in the living room. I gulped.Damn it. Does it have to be them, of all people? I even slammed the door on his face twice!"Don't worry about that, my child. I actually just met her earlier this morning and gave her some cookies." Amanda turned toward my direction and asked, "Have you tasted the cookies we baked? How were they? I hope it suits your taste."A forced grin flashes through my lips from her sudden question. "A-Ah, yes, it was good. The sweetness was just the right amount," I replied, almost stuttering.I'm not used to people talking to me much, which makes me feel uncomfortable."That's good to know—""Grandma, you gave your homemade cookies to Queen? What about me?" Bright purses her lower lip and pouts in front of her family. She then furrows her brow in front of her, to which the man speaks and flicks her forehead."You act like a spoiled brat most of the time," the man says, and then the two proceed in a short, staring contest."Now, now, my dear. I brought more pastries. How could I ever forget about my grandchild?" Amanda comments, and stops the two from having a petty argument.Indeed, the old lady brought another bag of pastries in her hand. Unlike what she brought earlier in the morning, what I was staring at right now were pastries I had never seen before in my life. They all look appetizing. The interaction between the three took nothing more than a few hours. However, within those hours, I already wanted to disappear out of embarrassment. Throughout dinner, Sam keeps glancing at me whenever he has a chance.I don't know what it means, but it made me feel uncomfortable. When Amanda and Sam bid their farewell, I was the one who saw them through the door because Bright excused herself for a moment. Again, the man stares at me as though he wants to say something.I let out a sigh."What do you want? Do you have something you want to say to me?" I ask.The man looks startled by my sudden demeanor and immediately scratches the back of his head.It was just rude how he kept glancing at me earlier that I couldn't help but ask. I'm well aware of my actions earlier, but it's still rude to stare at someone."Ah . . . it's nothing," Sam denies, which makes me crease my forehead.Well, whatever. It's not like I should care about him. It just so happens that my employer is his cousin, and I have to interact with him."Alright then," I say, and then proceed to close the door when he suddenly puts his arm across the board of the door. "What now?" I asked, one of my eyebrows raising upward."I'm not sure what you're going through, but," he pauses for a second before staring directly into my eyes. "Please don't hurt yourself," he adds, which makes my eyes widen. What did he just . . . say?I bit my lower lip instead of retaliating against his words."Thank you," I weakly answer, and with that, the man leaves and follows through Amanda, who is now in front of their room. I don't know what that man actually means, but his words did indeed go through me for a second there. His thoughts probably conspired with my actions from yesterday to what he witnessed earlier, and he assumed my circumstances; a weak smile formed on my lips."Naïve," I say and then finally lock the door. After that short conversation I had with Bright's cousin, the night ended just like that. My employer stayed in her room the whole time after the interaction, and I was back in my room, still swayed from the countless thoughts I had.The room was as dark as the night sky, the silence as deafening as the thoughts in my head.People say that they should put whatever bothers you into light, but that's not something you can easily apply to everyone.Sometimes, silence is the key to burying secrets, and it will forever haunt you."So, do you have anything planned for the day?" The next day, after light had embezzled the room, the sound of birds chirping and the aromatic smell of sunny side eggs and bacon engulfed the whole place."I was planning to clean up the place as usual, Ma'am," I replied, and then proceeded to pour her a glass of water and put it beside her plate."Thank you," she says, and then immediately drinks it. "Say, have you ever gone out to the shop?""Yes? I buy groceries–""No, no, I meant shopping just for fun." Bright cut my words, which made me close my mouth again.Shopping? Isn't that just a waste of money and time?"Wait, don't tell me you haven't tried it even once?" She looked at me in disbelief. Her forehead was creasing, her mouth was almost half open and her eyes were unwaveringly looking at me."N-No?" I answer, almost unsure."Oh, my gosh! I should take you out sometime!" she immediately exclaims, which makes my eyes wonder. Why?"Maybe after I've done my research this week, I'll take you out!""You don't have to do that, Ma'am," I say, trying to oppose the idea. I'm a total stranger and almost like a free-loader here. Why would she give me a lot of things? Am I not suspicious of her?"What? I can and I have to!" Bright comments and scoops her bacon and rice into her mouth. "I'm your employer! You won't have any choice but to follow me. Besides, this will be a good chance for you to unwind."I bit my lower lip.Seriously? Sometimes, I feel like she's too much.I didn't argue with her anymore and just ate the food on my plate. Once I'd done so, it was now time for her to go home because of her schooling."I'll probably be back by next week, so I hope to see you looking forward to it!" she says, and with that, closes the door.Meanwhile, I begin with the same routine I always have. After the heavy meal we had, I took out the trash as usual. It was a daily routine towards the elevator when I noticed the familiar stature of a man approaching the same designation as I was.The two of us look at each other for a second before we look away from one another."You're out to take the trash again," the man starts. I stole a glance at him and he was just staring at the space of the elevator."Yes," I quickly reply."I hope you thought of what I said last night," he reminds me, which makes me crease my forehead. What does he know about my situation, anyway?"Mind your own business," I said, and, coincidentally, we were already on the ground floor. I quickly take a step outside of the elevator and look at him again. "I don't know what your deal is, but I'm fine, alright?" I say and quickly walk off with the trash bags I have in my hand."Yeah, yeah, if you say so," the man comments.DURING my stay in Bright's condominium, I have gotten used to many interactions throughout the place. I guess it was inevitable for me to think that I could avoid encountering Sam when he was just a few feet away from where I was. During those times I saw him in the hallway, we would only have short conversations, and if not, we would just plainly ignore each other. It's not like we're friends or anything, anyway. Plus, the two of us have no topics to talk about. Amanda continues to deliver food through the door every other day, and, most of the time, she asks the same man to bring it to my doorstep. "Here's the freshly baked macarons, my grandma baked." Those were the immediate words I heard the moment I opened the door to the sound of his knock. "Yes, thank you," I shortly commented, and then grabbed the bag of pastry."You like sweets, don't you?" Sam immediately adds, which makes me raise one of my eyebrows. "And?" I ask, crossing my arms in front of her. I probably got used
AWAKENED by the sound of screaming, I rose from my bed only to discover myself dripping wet with sweat. A terrifying nightmare again victimized me. I couldn't help but catch my breath. It was a good thing that I wasn't screaming in my sleep, or else I would have woken Bright. I immediately got up from where I was lying and walked towards the kitchen area of the room. I pulled the refrigerator door open and then grabbed a glass of water to drink. "You were still awake?" A voice from behind me suddenly spoke, and so I almost let go of the glass. "I'm sorry. Did I startle you?" Bright immediately follows, which makes me put on a wry smile. I put the glass on the kitchen counter, only to notice she was wearing a nightgown with messy hair. "I only grabbed a glass of water," I say. "I see, then good night," she answers, and quickly enough, her attention switched from me to the television, flashing another movie. I walked back towards my room and closed the door. When morning comes
THE SKY is painted sky blue with flying white cotton clouds that engulf the background. Around the area of the vast park, you can easily distinguish the people who are coming back and forth with desserts and different things in their hands. My eyes gazed towards the rides that people had come on and tried. There are a lot of them who look excited with gaping smiles flashing through their lips while holding hands with their loved ones.I licked the ice cream in my hand as I waited for Bright to come and pick me up."Did you wait long? The takoyaki stand was booming with customers, and it took me over ten minutes to get here," she said, and then put the food on top of the table."It's fine," I say with a smile. The two of us took a short break after we started off with the shooting game not too long ago. Bright takes me on another trip in which she introduces me to different places, such as today's event, an amusement theme park. She made me wear the same outfit she did; matching tee-sh
"A long endless nightmare."• • •The stars were swallowed by the darkness of the night sky. Only the reflecting light from the scarring moon illuminated the small window of the room.My eyes blinked several times. At the same time, I felt a small throbbing on the back of my head."Finally awake?" A woman whose hair was dancing through the air, wrapped in a fitted tube dress and five-inch heels, stood in front of me. She had one of her hands right across her waist while the other was holding onto something sharp—a knife. She was the most beautiful woman I'd ever seen, bathed in blood-red liquid. However, I growled at the sight of her."What did you do to me? Where is Amanda?" The moment I opened my mouth, I could feel the dryness in my throat. The words that escaped my lips were as cracked as the slim chance of escape in this apartment. She only ogled right at me with a narrow smile flashing through her lips.It was like staring right through the devil."Amanda? Who is that?" She slow
"MAMA." A soothing child-like voice started to wring me from my long eternal sleep. The sound of a wailing baby starts to reach out to me, slowly pulling me towards my waking state. When I opened my eyes, for a second there, I thought I saw a vision of the same child in front of me, tears rolling down his small chubby cheeks, staring into my eyes.If only I could move, I would have immediately held him in my arms.In one instance, I suddenly woke up. The baby disappeared in front of me, and what engulfed my view was the same nightmare. My forehead crunches as I see myself lying in a bed with a red satin blanket. It was only a dream.I turned my eyes toward the whole place and took notice of the same face I had started to feel disgusted with.Bright was lying beside me, wearing a see-through night gown, asleep as though she had no care about the world. My eyes then glanced toward myself and took notice of my body.A toned, petite body with scars and bruises all over.I wasn't wearing a
THE SOUND of wheels rolling on the floor engulfs the hallway as footsteps begin to follow from behind. For a moment there, the sensation of being pushed stopped for a moment, and my eyes locked with Bright's and I saw the huge grin flashed through her lips."Are you ready?" she enthusiastically exclaimed, her eyes squinting in delight.I only looked at her with lifeless eyes, as though the life out of mine had been drained."Alright, here we go!"I wanted to shout at her, scream, or yell, but it didn't seem like my body could do so.I already lost my will a few days back. She pushed the wheelchair towards the elevator near the staircase, and in one instance, we were already on our way to the ground floor. As minutes passed by while we were inside the small spacious box, I couldn't help but reminisce about the past. The sky was gray, and the sound of heavy rain engulfed the entire area as my drenched body filled a bench at a nearby bus stop.I was cold, starving, and tired. I've been s
"WHAT ARE you doing? Sit still," Bright ordered me, clicking on a button she had in her pocket.I yelled, biting my lower lip at what she had just done. Before we came out of the stall, Bright managed to slip in something from inside of me."B-Bright," I called out to her, holding onto the hem of her dress. I couldn't explain the feeling inside of me as I felt the device stir my insides."Quiet, Queen," she responded, and immediately pushed the wheelchair towards the lounge of the mall.Damn, she's doing this on purpose. My face was flashing red, my chest gasping for air. At any moment, I'm sure a squeak will come out of my mouth, and I won't be able to keep my voice from moaning.I grasped onto her forearm this time, but coincidentally, a man dressed in a police uniform came towards our direction."Good day, ladies," the policeman says and looks at us two. "May I have a few minutes of your time?" he adds which makes me unable to speak."F . . . fuck," I stutteringly muttered to mysel
THE SOUND of the heavy rain pouring down the sky engulfed the rooftops of each and every corner of the condominium. As I yielded towards the window pane close to Bright's room, I saw people dressed in raincoats, uniforms, and casual clothing walking past the streets with umbrellas strapped to their bodies."Alright, I'm off, darling," Bright suddenly says before walking towards my direction. She then leans towards my head, her hand gently lifting my chin as she presses her lips against my forehead. As she pulls away slowly, my eyes manage to stare at those same orbs, but unlike the first time I saw them, they are staring at me indifferently.Strangely enough, it was like staring into the eyes of a stranger . . . a demon. Her long eyelashes blinked together with her eyes before strands of her smooth silky hair brushed past my skin.Indeed, Bright is beautiful.I didn't resist her actions and just merely stared at her with a blank expression on my face. There was no use resisting anyway
CLOUDS OF white engulfed the whole sky as huge balloons rustled towards each other. The venue was placed with loads of flowers in shades of white as a smile flashes through my lips. The people's eyes slowly turned towards my direction, their gazes mesmerized at the sight they were looking at. As I came down from the car I was riding in, the long puffy gown slowly brushed past my body as someone assisted me in moving. In my hand was a bouquet of red roses and my hair was tied in a gorgeous luxury filled with accessories of golden flowers. One of the people helped me with my veil and fixed it on the ground as I slowly made my way towards the aisle. On the other hand, another car stops at the church as another bride comes out.A woman dressed in a fitted tube gown made her way with her hair flowing in blonde curls towards her waist. She was wearing an accessory matching mine across her locks as someone assisted her veil.Just looking at her from afar makes my heart skip a beat. She was h
"I love you."• • •THE FIRST time I laid my eyes on her, I thought that she was just a stranger. I'd walk past the streets in heavy rain.I didn't think that there would be a time when I'd develop feelings for a woman who had just fainted and was longing for death to arrive.I closed my eyes as I felt the heavy pouring rain engulf my ears. I was on my way to the parking lot when the rain suddenly poured down. Coincidentally, there was a waiting shed not too far from where I was as I held a paper bag close to my chest. As my eyes slowly looked at the darkness of the sky, I saw the gray clouds swallow the sky and nothing but the sound of vehicles maneuvering enveloped the place.Students such as I am were now on their way to their own destination and the light drizzle became rain. I reached out my hand to touch the water falling and felt the cold touch of liquid. It reminded me of her eyes. Those cold, indifferent eyes.I thought that the first time I saw her, her eyes were always blac
"Would it be a sin?"• • •DARKNESS engulfed the whole spacious room as I felt my hand caressing hers. Her cold and lifeless body lay beside me as I stared right into her closed eyes, watching her beauty from above. My hand then slides through her blonde locks as I stroke them gently with my fingers. The smell of her rotting flesh mixed with the fragrance of her shampoo surrounded the four corners of the room. It was a soothing, satisfying feeling, and I couldn't help but feel her body enveloping me from the inside.I closed my eyes, putting her head against my lap.I laid my eyes on her sleeping face and said, "Do you want to hear me sing?"I intertwined our fingers just like she does every time, and what was flashing through one of them was a silver accessory that moves my heart every time.An engraved stone was attached to the accessory. It was a wedding ring I bought when I had the chance to go out.I put it across her slim, beautiful fingers and gave it a peck on my lips. Can't H
THE CURTAINS were swaying slowly as the light embezzled me from my sleep. I couldn't help but yawn and stretch my arms out.Morning had just started, and the sunlight radiating from across the window pane put a smile on my face.As I looked around the room, I was greeted by the gleaming sight of white colored wallpaper, followed by the same bedroom I had been sleeping in for the past few months.Afterwards, my eyes landed on the woman sleeping close to me, with blonde locks of hair and pale porcelain-like skin.I couldn't help but plant a kiss on her neck.On Tuesday morning, I was able to get up early and cook breakfast for the two of us. I prepared everything for the day and woke her up at around seven o'clock in the morning.Once we finished our breakfast, she started navigating through the morning, preparing herself for classes.Meanwhile, I went back to my usual job taking care of the garbage and cleaning up the place, until she called out to me to bid farewell and pecked me on t
BRIGHT wailed at the top of her lungs as her locks were pulled roughly by her mother. She drags her away from the floor until they reach the kitchen part of the apartment."What the hell was that? Are you insane, Bright? I didn't raise you just so you could go and love another woman!" she yelled, pointing at Bright with a disgusted look on her face. When I tried to follow and help, the old woman immediately berated me."And you? You're ungrateful! My daughter let you in to work and yet you were flirting with her?" She stared right at me with fire in her eyes, as though she'd gobble me up at any moment. Her face was turning bright red from rage, and her eyes were sharp, her lips pursing, and her brows arching."I can't believe you came from me! You're a disgrace!" she added, hitting Bright in the face with her hand. She continued to do so while Bright tried to defend herself by shielding her face from her mother.I panicked as if I didn't know what to do. I tried to swallow my fear and
FOR THE first time in a long while, I was able to come out of the apartment. Bright's mother happens to tell me to buy some stocks for the apartment. As I navigated my way down the elevator, memories immediately came rushing back into my head.It was exactly eight months ago when Bright took me to this condominium, and I met Sam a week after settling down.We would always coincidentally meet in the elevator, probably because we were staying on the same floor.Truth be told, he was a nice guy. I understood each and every word that came out of his mouth, giving me advice when I needed it and becoming emphatic about my situation. However, it wasn't something I could call love. I wasn't in love with him.As soon as the elevator door opened to the ground floor, I started walking down the street and was welcomed by the same guard from before."It has been a long time since I saw you, Ma'am! I'm glad you came back," the guard greeted me.Immediately, a wry smile formed on my lips as I heard
"IT WAS confirmed that PO1 had trespassed inside their condominium without any permission using the place's security camera attached to the hallway, disguising as a delivery man. It was also confirmed that there are primary fingerprints from the man in the handle of the kitchen knife that was used in the stabbing, and secondary fingerprints from the two women who live in the room.""And lastly, he used his license to point a gun at an innocent citizen, leading him to the accusation of abuse of authority."A man read a report in front of his chief-commanding police while an old man wearing a police officer's uniform confirmed the information by nodding his head."I see then, what was his motive in the first place?""PO1 Lopez said that there was a suspected kidnapping against one of the women and that the other was the victim," the police officer narrated, which made the chief frown."What nonsense is this?" the chief exclaimed. "If there was only a rise of suspicion, he should have ga
LIGHT radiated from the television as the sound from the speaker engulfed the four corners of the room. What was flashed through the screen was a person speaking in fluent English, narrating news for today's date.I stared at the local news, my eyes blinking at each and every changing image."What are you watching?" Bright suddenly pulled me from my deep thoughts and embraced my neck in a hug.I didn't speak a word and just continued to stare off-screen.Truth be told, I cannot understand what I am watching. All I know is that light is blinking from the television as I continue to hear mumbling words."Do you know that the police are currently investigating the man's sudden disappearance?"Her lips against my ears made me feel tingly from the inside."Rumors are circulating and I wouldn't be surprised if in the coming days . . . a man will be knocking on our door again, demanding to enter with a search warrant," Bright added, her lips nibbling through my ear."Don't you find it exciti
"HELLO? Is this Queen Ramosa's residence?"On a Saturday morning, a man stumbled into the reception hall of Bright's condominium. He was a tall, muscular man with broad shoulders, wearing a casual polo shirt and jeans. His hair was brushed towards one side."Queen Ramosa? Ah, yes, there is a resident named Queen here. However, how may I help you?" the receptionist responded, a smile continuing to flash through her lips."I need to know which room she's occupying. I have a business with her," the man says, immediately. His face didn't change expression at all, staring at the woman with a serious look. The woman tilted her head a little before saying, "I'm sorry, sir, but we cannot provide personal information about our residence in this condominium—"Even before the staff could finish her words, the man suddenly rustled through his pockets and pulled out a wallet.Inside the leather brown billfold was a licensed badge of a police officer."Take me to Queen's room now," the man demanded
