CHAPTER TWO
I rushed in my house to pick some clothes before I went to see my mom at the hospital. I was already at the hospital in two hours time; it was on Thursday so I didn't mind missing the Friday class. I walked into the hospital and was directed to my mom's ward.
My mom was a diabetic patient, with high blood pressure and had a brain cancer undergoing chemo therapies but she had stopped some few weeks earlier
My sisters never knew about my mom's condition only mom and I. About my dad's whereabouts no one never knew, even my mom too. I only remember the few times my dad spent with us; it was something I never thought would come to end.
Before he left, he was very abusive, he used to beat up my Mom like every time he would come home late at night reeking of alcohol, at one time he never came home and that was the last never heard from him or about his presence, my two younger sisters kept asking about him but seems they got tired asking about him and got used to the idea that he was never going to come back to our lives, personally I appreciated the fact that he was away from us but now that my mom was dying I was hoping he would have been there for her.
The doctor had said my mom only had a few months to leave, the brain cancer was supplying to the other parts of the body and it was hard controlling it, she was surviving on chemo therapies but since it was becoming more and more expensive each day my mom stopped going for them, despite there was no enough to cater for the medical bills and support us as well.
I walked in the hospital hastily I met her doctor on the way.
"Hey doc, how's my mom doing" I asked
"Hey Dylan, I can't really tell but your mom is dying, the chemo therapies used to help a lot but now that she stopped the chances of her surviving are minimal"
"I understand doc, let me go and check on her" I said as I walked past him and went to see my mom
I walked into my mom's ward and found my two sisters seated by the bedside.
I closed the door behind me and walked towards her bed, my mom's face was so pale and she looked so thin. Melissa recognized me first and she ran to meet and she hugged me so tight.
"Stop crying Melissa, mom is going to be okay?" I tried soothing and assuring her of my mom's health yet I knew so well mom has counted days before she left us
"No Dylan, you're lying to me, mom is dying can you see that?" She tried to argue but Alicia chirped in
"Mom is okay Melissa; look at how peaceful she looks while sleeping"
"Exactly Alicia, mom is going to be okay now ease can you stop crying, you making me feel bad"
Mom was still sleeping and she stirred in her sleep as I made to approach her bed
"Look over here Dylan, mom is waking up, and Ive been waiting for her to wake up so that I can see her eyes" Alicia said looking happy and I wished they knew mom wasn't going to be with them in a few days.
"My children" mom said as she struggled to sit
"No mom, just sleep you need to rest"
"Dylan, you came, how is school?"
"School is fine mom, and yes I came you know I wouldn't miss that, Melissa called me and I was just from my morning class I just rushed here to see you mom"
"Thank you my son, now my princess' can you let me speak to your brother for a while?"
"But mom, cant we just stay with you guys here, you just woke up remember?" Melissa argued back
"Mel can't we just give them some privacy, mom was kindly asking us don't be selfish, come on let's go grab something from outside" Alicia said and trust me you I smiled, Alicia was more mature than Melissa although they had an age gap of three but Alicia was more mature, she always so things beyond and that's why I loved her.
"Now that's my girl, I love you my daughters" mom said and smiled
"We love you too mom", they said and pecked her.
We remained with my mom alone in the room and from the look of things my mom was not going to be with us in few days or hours maybe.
"Son, I wanted to have a lone time with you, there are things you need to know and as my elder child I'm going to leave all the responsibilities in your hands, you need to take care of your younger sisters, I know I'm not leaving behind anything precious but I leaving with my blessings, I want you to take care of them and yourself too, my days are numbered or maybe I have less than hours to stay in this world, I stopped the chemotherapy treatment because of the bills, I had exhausted my savings and I wouldn't continue going for them and let you suffer, now son please don't let my daughters, your sisters suffer, a family succeeds only when they work together and remember togetherness is unity, I love you all Dylan even if your dad never showed you that but I want to let you know that I loved you so much as my children, you're the only people that made me stay back in that shun of a marriage but thank God y'all grownups, there's some letter I wrote for you it's in my safe, you make where I keep my key, you'll find everything in there"
Before she could finish, she started coughing hard and the next thing was her convulsing.
I called the doctor and he came in rushing, I knew it was her time and there's nothing I could do about it.
My sisters walked in horror written on their faces
"What's happening to mom?" They asked in unison and trust me I had no idea what to tell them
"Dylan please is mom going to be okay? Doc is mom going to be fine?"
I watched in sadness as my mom took her last breathe, it was the most traumatizing moment of my life, I stood there transfixed on the ground not knowing what to do, my mom, my pillar of strength was now gone,
"I'm sorry guys but there's nothing I could do about it"
"What! No! It can't be true" they both said in unison and the tears I had been holding for a while started flowing freely.
CHAPTER THREEMy mom's death was not only a big blow to me but my sisters too, they cried all the way back home, we didn't have a choice left with us. I had to act strong for both Melissa and Alicia they weren't supposed to see me crying it would have broken them.As we went home there was only one thing ringing in my head, the letter my mom told me about, I was wondering what was in the letter and at the same time my head was pounding, what was I going to do with both Melissa and Alicia, they were supposed to go to school, food clothing, basic needs and my school fees too. I was in my fourth year and I only had one semester before I was done with my degree, I was taking literature, my passion for books was just something else, I hoped I found someone to take care of my kid sisters so I would just finish my exams and come to stay with them at home that was my prayer before we arrived at home.It was almost in the night when we got home, I prepare something for u
CHAPTER FOURI rummaged through my mom's room and found the key to her safe, I slowly opened it and I car face to face with a dark brown envelope, I presumed it was the one containing the letter my mom told me about. It was sealed so I took a pair of scissors from her night stand and cut the top part of it.There was a letter nicely folded into another envelope. My hands were already shaking and I was super tensed, I mean, I was not sure what was in the letter and I was only hoping it wasn't something bad.As I opened the letter, my hands were literally shaking and sweating, it was a long well written letter from my mom.I chose to sit on the couch where I'd comfortably read it from, I made sure the door was locked from the inside.DEAR SON,Hello my dear son? I know by the time you'll be reading this will be long gone, long gone to the land of the dead, but before anything else I want to you know that I love you from the bottom of my heart, you
CHAPTER FIVE“Man, that is fucked up, I mean all this while I have known your dad as your dad but seems like he was only staying with you guys because of your mom, no wonder he left, I am so sorry man” Dan said as we sat in the living room, my aunt had not arrived yet and we were sort of still waiting for her to com so we would know the way forward, I dint have any cash with me, not any sort of money that could help me with my mom’s burial, so we sort of had to wait for her, it was a few minutes past ten and I was sure she was going to arrive sooner“I know man, I just don’t know to do with my two little sisters, they are the only family left and I am not old enough to take good care of them, I mean I don’t have a stable to provide for them, they are way too younger, I just don’t know and now the only job that I had, that stupid boss just fired me and it is not like it was my fault, I just missed going to job today and he fucki
CHAPTER SIX“Look Dylan! Aunty Sue is here, she brought us cakes and chocolates! Melissa shouted from the doorway with a bag full of chocolates, I stood up from the couch and walked to the door, true to her words, aunty Sue was in her car, she was still inside so I walked past Melissa all the way to the drive way Aunty, you came? I said as I walked to her car and she smiled Yes of course Dylan, dont be stupid, here come help me carry this she said and I walked to where she was, when I saw her, my mind traveled towards my late mom, Aunty Sue was a replica of my mom, everything in her reminded me of my mom and I found myself hugging her Oh my God Dylan, I am so sorry for your loss, Kayla was my elder sister and I loved her so much, I was saddened by the news and honestly speaking I dont know why she would stop going for chemo therapies, I was always ready to help her but she was stone she wouldnt listen to me and now she is gone, too early for yo
CHAPTER SEVEN“Hello girls? So I was thinking about something good actually it is something great I know you will like it” I said to my two sisters who were now seated in their respective beds, it was just a few hours after mom’s burial, aunty had left immediately to go book our flights to England, I didn’t know what to tell my sisters at the moment but there I was gathering enough courage to break the news to them, I did not want to tell them about the letter until the time was right, I just wanted to help them pack a few of their belongings because we were to leave early the following day, Dan had just left for his house and had promised to come back and spent the night with us“Hello Dylan? You look distracted, is something wrong? And where is Aunty Sue?” Melissa asked and I inhaled sharply, you know Melissa was a thirteen year old girl but she was very mature, she could sense when something was wrong and she would tell me bluntly,
CHAPTER EIGHT“Are you guys ready for the long flight?” Aunty Sue asked that night as we were seated in the living room, we were just chilling in the house, Alicia was playing with Gwynn, Dan’s kid sister on the couch with their toys, and I was on my phone lost in my own world“Yes Aunty and by the way are there kids of my age at your place, you know I am going to leave Gwynn here or can I travel with her now that she is the only friend I have here?” Alicia asked and I smiled, Aunty Sue’s mouth curved into a smile, Alicia was always social, she would fit anywhere, she was not a choosy kid and that is what I always loved about her, always social and welcoming“Not really sweetheart, Gwynn will have to remain here so you will always be coming to visit her here when schools break” Aunty said with a smile plastered on her face and Alicia just looked at her“But I w
CHAPTER NINE“Where have you been all these years? Are you not even ashamed of yourself why are you now showing p here now after mom’s death, you didn’t even show up in her burial, what makes you think that we are happy to see you huh?” I asked him and he just looked at me like I was some statue“Oh my God look at how you have grown into such a fine boy, you can even stand up for yourself, and the guts just like your mom’s the only difference is that she was a coward and didn’t know how to take care of herself and even her kids, she was a bitch who deserved to rot in hell I am glad she died by the way and I am not even remorseful for what I did, I am in fact glad I did, you remind me of her promiscuity, she lied to me all those dam years and I am not just going to stand here and watch you disrespect me” he said and I just chuckled, I might have been afraid of him when I was young but at that moment, I was re
CHAPTER TEN“Aunty you want to mean that mean that dad doesn’t own that house? I mean I thought he owned it’ I asked immediately the car drove off from the compound, on last look at our used to be old house and I wiped the lone tear that was threatening to fall from my eyes, I knew I was going to miss that place to doubt, I had grown to love that place and got used to Chicago as my birth place and my home, all my friends, the college friends and all my childhood friends that I was going to leave behind, I didn’t know if I would come back to check on them, or maybe say hi to them, especially Dan and by the way I wasn’t surprised when Ivanna didn’t show up in mom’s burial, I knew she was just pretending to care when deep down she was just trying to laugh at me, I don’t even know why I was falling for her, such a wicked soul, my mom was right about her, she was just someone to pretend she likes you or cares about you until she gets
CHAPTER FIFTY-TWOTWO WEEKS LATERIt had been two weeks full of ups and downs, full of investigations, police here and there but filly it was time for the two families to celebrate their victory, it was more than what one would do if you were in their shoeThe family had finally gotten their freedom and the culprits were in custody, it was not an easy task to pull but they managed in the end“I can’t believe that we are here, that my mom is here and my dad and your family is back together again, to me it sounds like a miracle, like a dream, I don’t know” Maeve said to Dylan as they were seated by the pool, it was at his new home where they had just moved in after everything had calmed down, it was not far from Maeve’s place, everyone was invited including Alyssa who thought she wasn’t going to be invited to the party“Yes, me too, it is hard to believe that all this happening, to me it is like a dre
CHAPTER FIFTY-ONEA WEEK AGOOver the days that followed the two families got so busy in finding out what really happened Dylan’s father and Maeve’s mother, Alicia was doing on well and she was on medication responding quite well which was good news to the family, they were just done with their end term exams and they were just home playing games on their new ipads and Melissa had already gotten herself new bunch of friends, they spend most of their times togetherSince the day that Maeve and Dylan made love I his car, their bond was on something else and there was nothing that Alyssa could do to break it, no matter how many incidences she involved herself to try and maybe seduce him, trick him into accepting her, he would always choose Maeve over her and that sucked for her, she had no friends, not eve Caitlyn whom she thought that would help her around, she remembered the day that Mike broke up with her, it was the very same day that she kiss
CHAPTER FIFTY“I have just passed by Alyssa on my way here and it was like she was coming right from this direction, is everything okay? Because the moment she saw me, she sneered at me and got into Caitlyn’s car and the banged the door” Maeve asked Dylan immediately she got into his car, he looked confused, frustrated and uncomfortable“It is nothing, you know how she likes to create a mountain from an anthill, she just hates you since that day you know, are you ready? Maybe we should just drive home, I don’t think I want to go for ice crem today” he said and Maeve knew that he was probably trying to hide something from her but she was not going just to let it slide just like that, she knew that Alyssa was capable of anything and that she would do anything just to frustrate her, she knew that Alyssa was in love with Dylan buts he was in love too and she was not going to just let her get what she wanted and let her step on he
CHAPTER FORTY-NINEThe following days that followed were a little bit too busy for both Dylan and Maeve that they did not get enough time together, it was like everyone was engrossed in their exams but at long last, they finally got the chance to meet that Friday after exams, Dylan offered to ride with her in his car after their last exams paper, Dylan had plans over the weekend, he was going out with his aunt and together with Mr. Baker, they were determined to find out the truth about what had really happened and Dylan had this feeling that his father was still alive and he was looking forward to meeting him, he knew there was a possibility of him being alive given all the evidence they had been collecting since he got in England to stay with his auntThere was this tension between Maeve and Alyssa and the two were not talking after the ordeal that occurred at Dylan’s house, Maeve had developed this kind of hatred towards her and she was bound to do anything ju
CHAPTER FORTY EIGHT“Can you imagine Maeve lashed at me yesterday when I went to check on Dylan’s sister? I did not know that she was there at his place and worst thing is that Dylan called her babe in front of him?” Alyssa complained to Caitlyn who was busy munching on her apple“I don’t understand why you keep complaining about what Maeve is doing, she is happy with him and you should be happy with Mike, don’t know why you jealous all of a sudden, you remember the you also shouted at him and made him look like a fool, he then met Maeve who was not shouting at him and the two are actually compatible, I can see how they look at each other, you know what friend? It is high time you let go of the past and focused on yourself and your boring boyfriend Mike, stop being jealous” Caitlyn said and Alyssa looked at her for a few seconds before she scoffed“Really and I thought that you were my friend, I can&rsq
CHAPTER FORTY SEVEN“So have you got anything that might help us into finding about what happened to Dylan’s father?” Sue asked Baker as the two were seated at the cafeteria; Dylan excused himself while he let the two to talk“Actually I might be having something although I am not sure if it is useful and by the way your sister, Kayla I have met her three times and she was always speaking high of you, you two must have been close back then”“Yes we were, it is unfortunate that she left so early and left her kids behind, but we were close, she took care of me, took me to school and you know all that, she was a lovely woman, loved by many, Walker was lucky to have her but her kids were not even lucky to see him, I mean their biological father”“Yeah I know Walker was always talking about moving in with her and his kids but I have reasons to believe that he might be alive, you see my wife and Walker were working on the
CHAPTER FORTY SIX“You see I wanted to talk to you about this news about your father, my private investigator thinks that he is alive somewhere since the results are out, the ashes from your dad’s plane does not match his DNA and my doubts are that maybe he decided to death then vanish or maybe someone faked his death and maybe killed them, I really don’t understand anything and the fact that after going through all the trouble of exhuming the body only to find that the remains does not even belong to my wife, these two are somewhere else and what I don’t understand is why not say anything, it has been almost five years since all this and they have never made any contact and I don’t think that they are being held hostage after all these years, so the probability of them being alive is half, just like the probability that they might have been killed and their bodies dumped somewhere else, have you found anything in that diary that can help us
CHAPTER FORTY FIVE“I can see she is doing well, how are you Alicia? My name is Baker and I am Maeve’s father about you, how are you feeling?” Mr. Baker asked Alicia who was smiling“I’m good Mr. Baker thank you for stopping by” she said and Baker smiled, everything about her reminded him of his old friend Peterson whom his private investigator thought to be alive, according to him, Peterson might have been alive or maybe he did not die in that plane crash and that is Baker wanted to talk to Dylan and his aunt about the issue , he figured out ha maybe it was time they brought their heads together and thought about the matter or the fact that their relatives might be alive somewhere and seeing Alicia that day reminded him of Maeve while she was still young and one day when they were having dinner, Dylan father was around that day and it was a family and friends dinner night that they always did at least twice every month, Pete
CHAPTER FORTY FOUR“How are you feeling now?” Dylan asked his sister the following day as they were in the hospital, he had gone to stay with Alicia the following day and since it was on a Monday and he did not have any class, he decided to stay with his sister at the hospital will his aunt went back home to change before she could come back later at the hospital, Alicia was recuperating quite well and the doctor said he might even discharge her in three days time“I am better than okay, I just want to get out of here and go back home, I miss watching cartoons and all that and by the way where is Maeve? Or you did not come with her” she asked Dylan who was already lost in his own world, he was already lost in his own world thinking of the previous day’s occurrences, he was torn in between Maeve and Alyssa, he felt like he was already in love with Maeve but there was always that tingling he felt whenever Alyssa was around, he did not even hear
