Something about the last word that slipped through his lips had sent waves of relief washing down my spine. I wasn't entirely sure about what it was that I wanted or hoped for, but I knew better than anyone else that I didn't want him to end up with Lily.

“I beg your pardon,” I asked, tilting my head sideways while he pulled closer to me, the smile on his face moving around from side to side.

“Yes, that's the thing, and I'm sorry I didn't let this be known to you sooner. Like, we were longtime lovers back in high school. I'm not sure how much of our relationship you know about, but back then she left me, and suddenly she came back. I was stupid enough to consider not wanting to hurt her feelings, so I allowed her back.”

He stopped speaking for a moment, pulled closer to me, and I didn't tense up. I allowed him to do just as he wished, the smile on my face growing wide by the minute while he settled closer to me.
