"Mmm." Scott replied, then his eyes narrowed. It was, he realized, one of those rare moments when she really smiled at him. She should do it more often.

Definitely. But there again, maybe she shouldn’t. Not if he wanted to stay sane.

"It's not an order, Miss Sanchez, but if you want it to be, that's okay too."

Vivian chuckled. "Come on."

The elevator ride was quiet, which Vivian was completely okay with. She feared that if they spoke, they'd end up talking about that kiss, and she knew how that conversation would go. He'd say it was a mistake… That he wasn't really thinking straight that evening. Then he'd probably apologize for doing it, but that would only sound like rejection to her, and she preferred it if they both kept quiet about it.

They both stepped out of the elevator and walked out of the administrative building. A man walked over to talk to Scott and Vivian moved away a bit to give them some privacy. When the man left, Scott waved for her to join him again.

Linda leaned over, "So tell me," she continued. "What's it like to working for the handsome Scott McCall?" George and Betty laughed while Michael rolled his eyes and sighed. He looked like he was tired of hearing Linda talk about Scott. Vivian shrugged. "I could ask you the same question," she replied. "You work for him too" "You know what I mean. Yeah I know I also work for him, but I meant being so close to him. You're his personal assistant so you gotta know some things about him apart from work. Is he dating anyone? You know he used to date this woman, Elizabeth Smith…she's a model, and she thinks she's so special. She used to come to the office to see him then…. Urggh… she was the worst.""Hmhmmm" Betty nodded in agreement. "I'm so glad they broke up… and I know it makes no difference because I can't date him either, but she doesn't deserve him." "And you do?" Michael chipped in. "Shut up, Michael!" Linda shot back. Vivian watched Betty and George giggling as they always d

There was something about the way he was staring at her. Something dangerous… and yet she wanted to run towards it instead of away from it. His voice was husky… deeper than it usually was, and his eyes appeared darker. His lips were curved slightly upward, like he'd just heard a joke, but Vivian knew that there was nothing funny about that gaze. He stared down at her, his black eyes slowly traversing her hair, her outfit and down to the boots that added four inches to her height. When his eyes met hers again, she barely caught herself before taking a step back from the heat there. It practically seared her skin.Hazardous. Dangerous. She silently chanted the warnings to herself like a mantra. He would set fire to her life and leave her covered in ashes.“I'm really sorry if I disturbed you,” she rasped again, before clearing her throat of the arousal thickening it. “I didn't know that you were here.”“You’re beautiful.” Scott said instead of paying attention to her apology. Struck s

The sharp order ricocheted off her skull. Damn Scott McCall. She hated that he’d infiltrated her head, and she couldn’t evict him. It’d been one week since that meeting—no, ambush. One week since she was supposed to give him her decision about his preposterous ultimatum.Smothering a sigh, she excused herself from their small group on the pretense of checking with the catering staff, and headed across the room. She’d taken only a dozen steps before she saw something that made tingles jangle up her bare arms and culminated at the nape of her neck. She sucked in a breath and immediately turned to the source of the unsettling feeling.Scott McCall. She balled her fist, forcing her feet to maintain a steady, unhurried pace forward. Even as her heart pounded a relentless rhythm against her sternum. Why the hell was he here? She wondered. “How did you get in here?” she gritted out.Conscious of any gazes that might be leveled on them, she kept her polite, social mask in place, when in tru

He was her brother. And to keep that happiness shining on her brother’s face, she would have to make a deal with the devil. And Scott McCall was close enough. It wasn’t difficult to locate him in the crowded room. She found him and gave him a small nod, and he returned it. Exhaling, she turned her attention to the glass of red wine she’d barely touched throughout dinner. Now it, and about four more, seemed like a fabulous idea. She would need all the courage she could get._______"Can we get this thing started, please?” Jennifer asked Scott with a frown on her face as she set the glass on the small table and sat down on the chair. She rubbed her bare arms, and the sign of nerves pricked a conscience he’d believed to be impervious. “I’m sure you’ve already guessed that I’m going to agree to your ridiculous plan. Or let’s just call it what it is. Extortion.”“You have a choice, Miss Bennet,” he reminded her, sipping his bourbon.“Yes,” she agreed, bitterness coating the word. “Sacrific

He didn't even smile at her. In fact, he had that look on his face that suggested that he was very unhappy about something, and Vivian had this weird feeling that it was about her. "I trust you had a good weekend," he said. It sounded more like a statement than a question, and he seemed to get angrier as he spoke. "Yes, sir. I did" replied Vivian. "How was your weekend?" Scott's frown deepened. He had had an unpleasant week. His sister was getting better thankfully, but this whole thing with Bruce and Jennifer Bennet was getting to him. To make it worse, Vivian was out, attending parties with other men in the sexiest outfit he'd ever seen on her and it pissed him off. The fact that he was feeling this way about his Assistant only made it worse. And yet she stood there, in a sky blue office suit, looking so professional and innocent, that it was almost impossible to believe that she was the same person he'd seen in those damn boots and jumpsuit that looked like sin and he'd found i

Vivian stared wide eyed at him. "Me? Why me?" She asked. Scott almost winced. She sounded like the thought of attending a party with him was the worst thing she had ever heard. Did she really dislike him that much? Or was it because he wasn't that Michael guy? What the hell did she even see in him? He had no fucking idea. He hadn't expected her to scream and jump in excitement at the news, but the look on her face was just hurtful. Almost as if she was scared to be around him. He shrugged. "Well, you're my assistant" he said, and hoped that his statement would make enough sense. "Sometimes, you'll have to attend business events with me. Sometimes even travel trips too. This isn't just a party. A lot of potential customers and investors will be present and I will need you to be around."It wasn't a lie, but it wasn't entirely true. Yes, she'd have to attend some events with him, but this particular party wasn't one of them, but he just wanted her around. He'd even considered asking J

There was room to stand although, and, in an effort to find Scott, Vivian began to push her way forward, when she froze.Because he was there.Difficult to see, true, because he was surrounded by a nucleus of glamorous women who seemed to be straining towards him, drawn like iron filings to a magnet. But his presence was as unmistakable as it was remarkable. That tall, wide-shouldered yet lean body. The jet-dark hair and the glittering stormy eyes. And before they could be trained in her direction Vivian fled—making her way back through the hall and out through the exit door, like someone seeking sanctuary. The air was surprisingly clean and pure and scented, with only the faint drone of traffic reminding her that she was in the city. Vivian took a sip of her drink, but the wine almost made her choke when she sensed, rather than heard, someone behind her and she spun round to see the tall, dark figure watching her, unmoving , the dark eyes unreadable, and she stood, rooted to the spot

"Stop it." Vivian said softly. "But why," Scott questioned softly, taking the glass from her unprotesting fingers and placing it on the table next to his, "Why do you say that? When you don’t really want me to stop it?’ "Yes, I do, Mr Mc—""Scott…" he corrected again. "Scott" she whispered, but he must have read the lie in her eyes and on her lips. "I don’t think so. I know it's been tough at work—but we’re no longer at work. No one from the office is even here so we are free to do what the hell we want. You want me. We’ve been fighting it and I don’t want to fight it any more. I know what you want, honey, ""Stop it," she whispered again, but he took no notice, just gave a low laugh as he caught her by the waist, drawing her behind the scented seclusion of the thick, scrambling honeysuckle and into his arms."Say it once more—with feeling," he whispered.Say it? She could scarcely breathe, her senses were so full of him and the heady perfume of the flowers. He pulled her closer a

He nodded,"I was so determined to ruin Bruce using his sister Jennifer too, but then I met you, and without even trying, you touched something inside of me. You made me care. Stopped me from becoming a monster, and made me start to care about more important things than revenge. Hell, I even became friends with Jennifer. She had been trying to reach out to me after the accident, but my mother and sister just weren't ready to have her around at such a time. ""Oh Scott" "When I had that accident, I was on my way to you. I wanted to tell you that I missed you. I was still running away from the way I felt about you, and I wasn't ready to admit my feelings to myself, but I missed you… badly. And I was coming to you… to tell you…. And that's when I…. I…. What I'm trying to say, Vivian, is that you're an amazing woman, and I… I…"Enough was enough. She had heard his declaration, seen the evidence of it in his eyes. Now she wanted him close—as close as a man and woman could be. "I understand

"You’re looking good. I mean, you’re looking well—fully recovered." said Vivian. "I feel it." He raised a dark eyebrow. "Aren’t you going to invite me inside?" "Of course!" She opened the door wide and as he walked into the hall she thought that the fact he had had to ask spoke volumes about the distance which had grown between them. As did the fact that he hadn’t touched her—and the coolly remote look on his dark face which showed no inclination to do so. She faced him awkwardly. "Where shall we go?" He wondered how she would react if he suggested the bedroom, but, while that wasn’t quite the last thing on his mind, that wasn’t the reason he had come here today. "Is it warm enough to sit outside?" "I think so. Shall I make us some coffee and bring it onto the balcony?" But he didn’t want a social ritual. He didn’t even particularly want coffee. He shook his head. "Not unless you really want some. I’m fine.""So am I."He hadn't forgotten just how beautiful it felt to be around

Vivian could do nothing but nod. She couldn't tell Scott's mother about their troubles, so she simply gave her a hug and wished her well. "Please tell Sara that I'm very sorry I couldn't see her before leaving." she said, and with that she went out of the house. It was only when she got into her car and drove off that she let the tears flow. ________Vivian spent the evening wandering around her house like a lost soul, unable to settle to anything, and her heart nearly leapt out of her chest when her phone began to ring. She snatched it up when she saw the caller. "Hello?". "Vivian""Oh, Scott!" She breathed a low sigh of relief, appalled to realize that she had half expected never to hear from him again. But that would have implied a lack of courage on his part, and he was certainly not lacking in courage. "Are you okay?" she asked. Okay? Scott looked around him, at the luxurious house which was his home. It didn’t feel like home any more. It felt like some gloriously appointed bu

She thought that he spoke it like a word he was unfamiliar with. "Yes, us." He smiled, but Vivian thought that it was a cool smile, even though he touched the tip of her nose with his lips."I know that we’ve been having a relationship and that it’s a very agreeable relationship." Very agreeable? He made it sound like a piece of classical music playing on the radio!"I see." Vivian said. He wondered if she did, but in the sweet afterhaze of making love his mind had been busy. "Shall we get dressed and go and find ourselves a drink?" If it had been anyone else, she might have thought he was searching for Dutch courage, but Scott was not the kind of man who needed alcohol to spur him on to say something, no matter how unpalatable. She sensed that the end was coming, and that, if it was, she would face it calmly and with dignity. "I’d love a drink," she said lightly. He might not need courage, but she certainly did. They dressed in silence, bending to pick up discarded pieces of clot

He had changed. The dark eyes were no longer so restless. The glittering, predatory eyes of the shark had gone. But a jolt to his memory might bring them back, surely? And the coldly ambitious Scott McCall might reemerge from the chrysalis of his coma."Ready?" she asked. He drifted his hand over her hair and followed it with the butterfly touch of his lips on the back of her neck. "Maybe we should go back to bed for a while?" he murmured.Vivian closed her eyes, tempted. If there was one thing that Scott had recovered quickly, it was his prowess as a lover. "But we’ve only just got up!" she objected."The doctor said that I was to rest as much as possible." "I think that your idea of rest and the doctor’s are not quite the same thing." Vivian replied. Reluctantly, she pulled her neck away. "Shall we drive or shall we walk for a while? We can order a cab later to my place or call your driver." "Walk," said Scott. "You won’t get too tired?" "Vivian," he sighed. "I’m fine. You know,

He sucked in a low breath of appreciation as she stood before him wearing nothing but flimsy underwear of soft green lace, her skin gleaming like silk. Her breasts spilled over the low-cut bra and the matching knickers made her legs seem to go on and on forever. He must have seen her like this before and yet it seemed as though he had never really looked at her. Never appreciated the satin fall of the dark hair which tumbled all over her shoulders."Dear God," he murmured. "You are unbelievable. Unbelievable." "No, I’m real." She began to unbutton his shirt."You’re wearing all this, while I’m not wearing nearly enough," she complained. He gave a low laugh, sucking in his breath as her palms skated light, sensuous circles over his nipples. "You’re wearing too much, oh, Vivian—" This as she unzipped his trousers and teased her fingertips over his straining hardness. He slid his hand between her thighs and her eyes widened in helpless pleasure as he began to move his fingertips agains

With Scott it had never been more than what they had today. And while that made her appreciate what she had got, it also made her long for what she had not. Commitment—and that was one thing she would never get from him."I’ll sleep next door for the time being. I think you need a little space," she said lightly. And so did she.He pulled a face of objection, but he was too tired to object too much. He lay down on the bed and it felt like heaven."Okay," he yawned. "If you say so." But within a couple of weeks he began to show very definite signs of improvement—physically, at least. The sleep showed in the renewed brightening of his eyes and the familiar healthy glow of his skin. Often they took him outside, to sit in the restorative sunshine and to sit quietly in the haven which Felicia's garden provided. He was eating proper meals, too—the freshest, most delicious food that Felicia and sometimes Vivian could conjure up.She put two plates of salmon down on the table one evening and

Scott drank his tea. It was very comfortable here by the fire—warm and welcoming. If only his head didn’t feel as though someone had jammed it in between a giant nutcracker, and in the process managed to take away some of the thoughts and associations and familiarity which made him what he normally was. But how did he know what he normally was? He didn't know what to believe. He still had childhood memories. He knew his family and his job, but most memories of the past months were missing so he was confused. He put the cup down and looked at Vivian, which was halfway to a cure in itself. She was wearing a soft wool dress, the color of blueberries, and her hair was loose—like the moon against the backdrop of a nearly dark sky. Her legs were spread in front of her and she had kicked her shoes off. He might be only two days out of a coma, but that didn’t mean that all his senses were dead. He might have a little difficulty wanting food as he usually did, but the stirring leap of awarene

"I can get myself dressed!" he protested. "Not yet, you can’t," the nurse fussed. "You’re as weak as a kitten, although I must say that you don’t particularly look as weak as a kitten!" "Why can’t Vivian help me?" he demanded, his heart sinking as he saw the nurse begin to roll her sleeves up over her rather hefty forearms. He’d much rather that dark-haired angel be at hand. The nurse coughed. "Well, she was a little taken-aback when you didn’t recognise her, of course—but, as I told her, that’s perfectly normal in these circumstances." "You mean I know her?" The nurse helped him with his jeans and began to get rather pink around the neck."Yes, Scott" said Vivian, in an odd, strained kind of voice as she walked into the room. "You do know me—you just can’t remember." Scott was still feeling groggy, but not too groggy to wonder how well he had known her."Here." Vivian began to slide a sweater over his head, her fingers automatically colliding with the silken flesh, and she saw h
