(Seven years later…)
The night was eerily silent as the wolf prowled through the training grounds. Its grey eyes were glowing with madness as it searched for its prey. And then, it halted as it spotted the family; a middle-aged man, his wife and their young son.
With a low growl, it stalked towards the father who watched its arrival with a look of horror etched on his face. He just watched in alarm with a pleading look in his eyes as the wolf pounced on him. With a snarl, the wolf bit his neck ferociously, spraying blood all over the place. The man fell on the ground lifelessly and his eyes turned glassy as life faded from them.
The wolf turned towards the woman with a snarl and curled its lips back, revealing blood stained teeth. The blood-thirsty monster stalked towards her mercilessly and leaped with a growl. The woman fell down helplessly from the assault and as she died, a look of terror stayed frozen on her face forever…
With blood covering its pelt and muzzle, the wolf turned towards the young man who was standing there waiting his turn. The wolf pounced on him with a growl and killed him off swiftly while the man didn’t even struggle once.
The next moment, the wolf changed to human form and as the moonlight fell on her features; I recognized the wild blue-grey eyes, and the golden hair matted with blood… It was me!
“You killed us!” my parents and brother pointed their fingers at me with blank looks on their lifeless faces….
**************
I woke up with a scream lodged in my throat and sighed when I realized that I had yet another nightmare.
I had actually never seen the rogues attack my parents or them dying. I had only seen the last moments of my brother. But in my nightmares, I always saw each of them being killed. Sometimes, they would fight back and sometimes they would just stand there idly while the rogues killed them. And sometimes like today, I saw myself as their killer…
I guessed it was because of my guilt at surviving while they didn’t. And maybe because I hadn’t found their killer yet…
‘I will find your killers and avenge your deaths even if it is the last thing I do,’ I vowed to myself like every other day in the past seven years before starting my day…
(A few hours later…)
The huge wolf held its head high in the air and drew its body to its fullest height in a show of aggression. Its wide eyes took on a wild look as it stared at me. Its hackles were raised in a show of aggression as it watched my every move. With its lips pulled back, it bared its teeth at me trying to intimidate me.
I observed its actions with a blank look on my face.
The wolf let out a fierce growl and crouched down, ready to attack me. And then it leaped towards me with a snarl.
I stood still until the moment the wolf was about to hit me. Just the moment before it could make contact with my body, I caught it mid leap. I caught its shoulders while its teeth were just inches from my neck. It snapped its jaw in an effort to bite me. Its hot breath hit my neck, and I knew I had moments before the wolf would take a chunk out of my neck.
With a deep breath, I held off the beast which was at least double my size. Then I raised it up over my head while gritting my teeth from the exertion. My arm muscles quivered from the heavy weight of the wolf, but I didn’t pay any heed to it as I focused my full energy on holding the huge wolf. Then, pushing all my strength to my arms, I threw the wolf.
It fell on the ground with a whine and I walked towards it while it tried to get up.
The wolf got up from the ground and I saw that it was favoring its right leg now.
Seeing me walk to it, the wolf growled at me and jumped again. I caught it again, but this time; I held it by its left leg, which I knew was injured from the previous fall. The wolf whined and tried to free its leg while I twisted it in an awkward angle.
I used its distraction to catch its head in my hand. Then I pulled my hand back and threw a heavy punch to its nose; a sensitive part for a wolf.
The wolf howled in pain and I let it fall to the floor. Then I jumped on top of it and restrained it from moving. And before the wolf could even blink, I had my hand around its neck, ready to snap it at any moment.
The wolf laid still for a moment and then tapped its paw on the ground two times; a signal of surrender.
I took my hand off from its neck and stood up, dusting off my hands.
I looked at the wolf as it bowed its head in a submissive gesture. The next moment, a handsome man in his late twenties was standing in front of me in the place of the wolf. I averted my eyes as he pulled on his shorts. We wolves didn’t care about nudity like humans, but still, I liked giving privacy when it was possible.
I looked up when I heard a roar of applause and found my pack members cheering for my victory.
“You beat my ass… Again!” my Beta Ethan said with a twinkle in his coffee brown eyes.
I watched as he popped his bone back into place with a grimace before it could set in the wrong way. We werewolves healed fast and if the bone set before we could set it right, it would have to be broken again and set in place. A painful process worse than getting broken bones in the first place…
I turned back to the new trainees who were watching us with awe and excitement. The fights always took place with both the fights in wolf forms or in human forms. A fight between a human and wolf was a rare occurrence, and the human emerging as the victor was even more rare…
“And that is how you defeat a wolf in human form in case you couldn’t shift in time or you feel that you have more advantage while you are in your human form. We have flexibility of movements and better control of limbs while we are in the human form," I said.
I took a moment to look at the eager warriors in front of me before continuing.
"The wolves have size and power on their side, but the humans have agility and techniques. And we have to exploit their weak points like the neck, chest area and stomach area. Hitting a wolf in the nose would distract it and you could use that to restrain the wolf and snap its neck like I just demonstrated,” I instructed.
They listened to my speech with rapt attention, and I walked towards them.
“Now split into pairs and one of you change into your wolf form while the other stays human,” I ordered.
Once the trainees split into pairs and one from each pair changed into their wolf form, they waited for my instructions.
“Attack!” I ordered.
The fights started, and I walked around correcting their techniques and postures.
Then I stood along with Ethan and watched their progress.
“Kayla…” he began.
I sighed, knowing what was about to come.
“Why don’t you change into your wolf form ever?” he asked, just as I expected.
“You are strong as you are. Way stronger than even most male Alphas. But still, you will be even more powerful if you are one with your wolf. The feeling of running with the pack, on the full moon, the joy of the hunt together… You are missing everything. Even the pack misses you during our runs…” he continued while I stood silent.
“I know that your past experience with your wolf form hasn't been good. What with you changing for the first time without anybody to guide you and having to undergo the traumas of rogue attack… But I promise… everything will be better now. Just give yourself a chance, Kayla… You would feel complete only if you embrace your wolf form,” he advised.
“I am complete as I am,” I replied in a harsh voice.
He flinched on hearing my response, but then looked at me with determination once more.
“Just what really happened to you, Kayla? Is it just because of the rogue attack or is there anything else? What exactly made you hate changing into your wolf form? Whatever it is, you know I would be there for you…” he said.
I looked at him sternly without responding.
“Take care of the trainees, Beta. I have business to attend to,” I said in an emotionless tone.
“Yes, Alpha,” he replied with a sigh.
With a nod at him, I turned and walked away from them.
Once I reached my office, I locked the door and sat on my chair. How could I tell anyone what exactly happened seven years ago? It was my secret to know. They just needed to know one thing, I was their Alpha and I could do the job perfectly without my wolf…
Kayla’s POVThe next morning, I was in my office going through the paper works of the new warriors when I heard someone knock.
Kayla's POVThough the exterior was extravagant, the letter itself just had a few simple lines written in neat cursive script.
Kayla’s POVI stared with disgust at the monstrosity laid out in front of me. Well, to be fair, the dress was pretty, and it was the best I could get in such a short notice. It was a royal blue full-length gown with a boat neck and full sleeves. There was silver-colored embroidery
Kayla’s POVWe had been travelling for an hour when I felt the sudden urge to turn back and go the other way. I felt as if ants were crawling up my body and the sensation was really unpleasant to say the least.
Kayla’s POV“Everyone, meet Mr. Leander Parker. He is a member of the werewolf council and he will be presenting the topics that have been selected by the council for today's discussion,” Jonathan said while pointing to a golden-haired guy who looked to be in his mi
Kayla’s POV“As you all already know, the Feral Assassin has been killing rogue wolves for the past five years. The council is undecided on whether he is an actual threat or not, since he has only killed so far. But recently, there has been a spike in the incidents, as if he is getting more violent. The time has come that we decide what we are going to do about him,” Leander announced. At the mention of the Feral Assassin, all the Alphas grew uncomfortable and exchanged doubtful glances.“The Council has been lenient with him so far because though his actions were not legally sanctioned, he was doing a favor to all of us by killing off those dangerous rogues. Though we had tried to catch him a few times in the past, he had always been evasive, and since the Council didn’t feel the urgency to catch him, we never put too much effort either. But now, with him growing more violent per day, what is th
Kayla’s POVI felt as if everything else faded away and it was just the two of us in the world. A dreamy smile formed on my face as I felt all my rage and pain vanish by just looking at him. As I met his amber eyes, I felt myself getting lost in them. As my eyes greedily drank up his appearance, I sighed with contentment. His dark hair was messed up sexily and I couldn’t decide if it was deliberately arranged like that or if he had messed it up by running his fingers through it. I had the feeling that it was the latter one, but anyhow; it looked perfect on him. There was just a hint of stubble on his chiseled jaw, and I suddenly had the urge to rub my cheek against that stubble to know how it would feel. He was wearing a tuxedo like every other man here, but somehow it looked better on him than anyone else. Maybe I was a little biased, but there was no denying that he was absolute perfection and I felt lucky
Kayla’s POVI looked up at Ethan and as I expected; he was staring at me with a confused expression. As the other couples danced around us, I started moving slowly so as to not bring notice to us by standing there idly. Realising my intention, Ethan followed my lead and slowly, we started moving together. As we gently swayed together, I saw Ethan opening his mouth to speak. I shook my head at him in warning and he nodded his head in understanding. This was not the time or the place for that conversation.‘Just trust me and help me out for now. You will know everything soon enough. But first I need a little time to sort things out,’ I mind linked him.Ethan stared at me with an intense look before giving a slight nod of acknowledgement.‘If that is what you want. You already know that I trust you. More than anyone and anything in my life, including myself,’ he replied.&nb
Three weeks later…Kayla’s POVAfter I killed Stephen, we searched the mansion and found the papers of his research. We destroyed everything to make sure that no one would ever get the idea to create a race of wolves with magic ever again. Once that was done, we covered our tracks and ensured we left nothing that led to us. Done with our work, we left the place since the spell that blocked us from escaping had already gone down by then. The next day, I announced our relationship to my pack since I had no more reservations about it. The man had literally faced death for me several times, and I loved him as much as I could ever do anyone. There was nothing that stopped me from accepting our relationship wholeheartedly. The pack received the news with far more enthusiasm than I had expected. Even Ethan appeared to be genuinely happy at the way I accepted Zane, and I decided that it was time to let g
Kayla’s POV I stalked towards Stephen, and he stood there looking at me with wide eyes. He was no longer sporting the smug expression from before, and he didn’t look interested in my wolf anymore either. “Kayla darling…” he called out in a coaxing tone that one would use to soothe an aggressive dog. I let out a loud growl at him and he flinched and took a few steps back. “I am your uncle, remember? I am the only one left in the world for you. You don’t want to harm me, right? You don’t want to be alone in this world, right?” The red in my vision darkened at his stupid words, and I snarled in response. ‘And whose fault is it that I have no one else left? Weren’t you the one who killed my entire family, you bastard!’ I mind linked him and his eyes widened in response. That’s right. He never left the pack officially, and hence he was still a member of my pack. And I am still his Alpha…
Kayla’s POVI looked horrified as the men laughed and approached Zane. I tried to hit my hand against the golden cage I was imprisoned in. But just like the last time, I was thrown off by the electric sparks from it. My hand sizzled for a moment before the burn healed. Well, it means the burns would heal at least. If I could just tolerate the pain, maybe I could break the cage? With renewed vigor, I took a few steps backwards, stopping right before my back hit the edge of the magical cage. Then I gritted my teeth, ready to endure the pain, and leaped towards the cage and kicked it. But all my efforts were for nothing. Even though I forced myself to endure the pain, it didn’t help like I had hoped. Instead of passing through the cage with some burns, it just repelled and threw me from it. I fell on the floor and panted hard, not even feeling the burns in my feet. My heart was suffering more pain than my body. If I couldn&
Kayla’s POVStephen looked startled at my sudden confidence, but then he smiled at me condescendingly.“My dear niece, I hope you have no illusions that you could fight against all of us? Being a girl and a measly wolf at that, you wouldn’t have stood a chance even if they were ordinary wolves. But with their magic, you have lost before you even start.”I didn’t bother to respond to him before looking over at the men next to him. With narrow eyes, I speculated about their strengths and anticipated their moves. I couldn’t ignore any details without knowing what would help me in dealing with them.“Aww, the little girl really is thinking of fighting us!” one man teased me.I walked backwards, and their eyes twinkled merrily, thinking I was going to run away. But they frowned in confusion when they saw that I just stood behind Zane.“Oh, the p
Kayla's POV I looked at Zane with wide eyes and slowly turned to see Stephen standing there with a wide smile. He looked just as I remembered. As if he hadn't aged a day since the time I saw him five years ago. Come to think of it, he looked even younger than how he looked then. Either the life was really good for him or he had a few tricks up his sleeves to keep aging at bay. Given the crazy hunger for power he possessed, he couldn't have had a peaceful life that prevented him from sporting grey hair. And from the magic raging around us, he was definitely dabbling with wizardry and I had a feeling that it was also responsible for his youthful looks. I looked at him with a blank expression pasted on my face and even though his face looked exactly the same as when I had seen him when he was younger, he felt different somehow. Then I realiz
Kayla’s POVAs Raymond got busy with shouting instructions to his loyal followers, I slowly slipped away from him and walked over to Zane, who was standing there with a sour look.“Relax. You know I don’t care for his attention, right?” I whispered.“As if you cared about that when you saw Maggie flirting with me.”I flinched at the reminder of the witch and bit my lips when I realised that he wasn’t clueless about her pining like I thought he was. I had to give Kudos to his act, though. Even I was fooled into thinking that he didn’t notice her efforts.I looked up to see Zane’s nostrils flaring, and then he narrowed his eyes.“Just as I thought.”Huh?Zane looked at me with a smirk.“Guess who is reeking of Stephen’s scent?”My eyes widened in the realisation that Zane got Stephen’s
Kayla’s POVI stared at the skinny guy who stood staring at the unconscious man with a proud expression. He dusted his hands off before looking around the hall as if waiting for anyone else to challenge him. People looked at him and then the brawny guy on the ground before scampering off while a few lingered around, praising his strength.I watched as the bigger man who was still unconscious was dragged away from the hall by his peers. For a werewolf to become unconscious and to stay so for this long, how much force should have been used on him? That too by a guy who looked as if he couldn’t even stand straight on his own.It smelled really fishy, and I just knew it in my heart that this was all linked to Stephen. I didn’t have any evidence that said so, but my instincts were screaming at me that this has Stephen written all over it and my instincts had never let me astray so far.As the g
Kayla’s POVWhen I thought of going to hunt Stephen, what I pictured in my mind was both of us getting dressed in badass spy costumes and searching for him stealthily until Zane gets his scent trail. And I thought it wouldn’t be much of a hassle since we were fairly certain that he was still somewhere in the state and we only needed to stop by in each of the towns before he could come across the vile man’s scent. We wolves could sniff out our prey for miles, and with Zane’s superior tracking skills, he could track the scents even farther than regular wolves.I had mapped it all in my head, and that’s why I was surprised when Zane declared his brand new plan that had nothing to do with what I had in mind.Zane had vetoed my grand plans by telling that it would look suspicious if we go to every town and sniff around for Stephen. He may get wind that we were searching for him, and we would nev
Kayla’s POVOnce Zane informed me that he got Stephen’s scent, I thought that we would start hunting him right away. But he insisted he needed to get some things done before commencing the tracking. My excitement took a nosedive at his declaration, but I decided I could use the time to check the snake’s diary. We locked the cottage, and I ignored Zane’s ill concealed laughter as I buried the key back in the plant pot. What is wrong with having a hiding place for a key?!When we reached the hotel room, I made a beeline for the couch and sat with the diary in my arms. I wanted to know what all nasty secrets it carried.Zane looked at me with amusement shining in his eyes, but seeing my determined expression, he left me to it before going to the balcony with his mobile.I opened the diary and noted that it was from the year of the rogue attack. For him to lock it in a hidden compartmen
