Chapter 226

Author: Feminine Blade
Millie's mind raced. At that moment, she desperately wished to crawl into a hole.

"I… I'm a caregiver who was hired to care for you tonight," she lied.

"Millie, I'm a police officer. I can easily see through your disguise," Pierce replied.

Millie blushed. She forgot that he was a professional.

She took off her mask, annoyed. "It's me. What about it? I've come to see if you've died," she retorted, deliberately putting on a fierce attitude.

"Since you're not dead, I'll leave now…" Millie quickly walked over to the door.

However, the moment her hand touched the handle, it fell off.

The door was broken. Now, she couldn't leave at all.

"Is there anyone there? Open the door! Help!" she called out.

But no matter how much Millie yelled, there was no response from the other side of the door. She then gave the door a hard kick in a fit of anger, but it was only to hurt her toe in the process.

The pain made her grimace and nearly made her cry.

Upon seeing this, Pierce—not caring th

Millie was rather annoyed. "What do you want to say?""Millie, aren't you curious about how Pierce got injured?" Tobias asked."I don't care," she retorted.Tobias began, "Ms. Atkinson was hurt. If the wound had been a little deeper, it could have severed an artery, and she might not have survived. "Pierce didn't know that you were innocent. Back then, all the evidence was against you. Ms. Atkinson was adamant about punishing you too. She's his sister, and you're his wife—he was caught between the both of you."Tobias continued, "He didn't want to let his sister suffer, but he also didn't want to punish you. He wanted to return a knife wound with another, but because he took the blame on your behalf, he decided to punish himself with two cuts."Pierce is an honest person. He could have made it superficial, but no—he insisted on cutting deep enough to expose the bone. That way, Ms. Atkinson would be appeased and not trouble you any further."He then added, "He ended up covered

Millie tried to break free, but Pierce held her too tightly that it even caused her ribs to ache."It Hurts..." she couldn't help but let out a soft cry.Pierce immediately released her and anxiously looked at her. "I… didn't mean to do that. I hurt you, right? I'll be more careful next time..." He was rather a little flustered, as if he were a child who'd done something wrong."It's fine. Just get back to bed and lie down," Millie replied. So, Pierce obediently lay back on the bed.Millie then asked, "Are you hungry? I passed by a fast food restaurant earlier. Many people are eating there even though it's so late. It must be delicious, so I got two portions to go."Pierce simply nodded at her words. When Millie looked up, she felt like she was falling into a deep abyss. Pierce's gaze was intently fixed on her, and it made her a little uncomfortable. "Why are you staring at me like that?" she asked.Only then did Pierce look away. This felt unreal to him."I thought you wer

"Jason came by today," Pierce said.Millie's heart stuttered at his words. She had almost forgotten about it. It seemed like the approval had gone through, and he had received his gun."I see," she simply replied.Millie wanted to ask if he liked it but stopped herself when she recalled that he didn't celebrate his birthdays. However, Pierce seemed to have guessed her thoughts. He gently stated, "I really like the gift you gave me.""That's good. Let's eat." Millie changed the topic."I'm sorry I've disappointed you," Pierce said."It's nothing. You should have told me earlier. I don't want to hear about you from Samantha. You can tell me things yourself, but if you don't… then forget about it. I'm not that interested anyway."Although Millie was in front of him, Pierce felt like she was very far away. Millie didn't dwell on what had happened and never brought it up again. It was as if nothing had happened. However, Pierce knew this had left a mark that was hard to erase.

Unfortunately, Millie was still preoccupied by Pierce's situation that she hadn't picked up on the subtle hint in Julian's comment."Besides, things are fine as they are. Marriage is all about living life with someone. Being with Pierce isn't too bad," Millie said. Then, she lowered her head to work on her design drafts, missing the flash of disappointment that crossed Julian's eyes.Julian wondered—if he had appeared in Millie's life before Pierce, would she have chosen to live her life with him instead?Julian knew that he should be content with the hand that he'd been dealt. After all, Millie was already married. Even if there wasn't much affection between the pair, it would be immoral and against the law to interfere between them. But how could he accept losing the one he loved just because he was a step too late?He had to try.…Millie had recently been focusing on her career.Regardless of the prejudice others held against her, they couldn't deny her talent. Julian was quick to speak up. "I had a little too much to drink… I meant to hand you the phone, but I accidentally answered the call. Pierce seems to have misunderstood something. You should explain what happened to him."Millie replied, "Okay. Did he mention what he wanted to talk to me about?""He was asking if you wanted to visit Mr. Atkinson Senior tomorrow."Upon hearing this, Millie sent Pierce a text: "I'll be there at 10 tomorrow morning. See you then."After giving it some thought, she added, "Julian had a little too much to drink today. I sent him home."After that, she stared at her phone for a while, but Pierce never responded. So, she decided not to dwell on it.It was already 11:00 pm after the meal, and Bertha insisted that Millie shouldn't walk home on her own so late at night—either Bertha or her husband, Augustus Saville, would drive her home. She was also given the choice to stay the night since the guest room had already been cleaned up. Millie didn't want t

Julian dropped Millie off at the entrance of the nursing home only for her to unexpectedly run into Pierce.Pierce had also just arrived and was stepping out of the car when he noticed Julian's vehicle. His expression turned sour."Should I go explain last night's situation to Pierce? It'd be bad if he misunderstood," Julian said."There's no need. He's not the petty type. He doesn't…" Millie trailed off.Pierce didn't care about her like that. But she left the last few words unspoken nevertheless.Julian then turned his car around and drove off as Pierce approached Millie."Why were you two together?" he asked."I had a problem with my car tire. So, I sent it away for repairs. It's hard to get a cab in the morning, so Julian gave me a ride," Millie answered."So, you stayed over at his place last night." Pierce's tone was icy."I dropped him off last night, and he threw up on my clothes. Mrs. Saville insisted that I clean up before leaving. And since it was getting late, th

The conversation sounded awkward no matter how it was twisted."Millie, is what Pierce said true? Did you stay over at your male colleague's place?" Bill asked.Under the immense pressure, Millie wished she could find a hole to crawl into.Nevertheless, she hurried to explain what had happened the previous night."So, that's how it is. While those were extenuating circumstances, I still disapprove of your choice. You're married now. It's not right for you to stay over at a male colleague's home. If it had been a female colleague, I wouldn't have said a word," Bill said."It won't happen again, Grandpa." Millie assured Bill."Grandpa, Millie also said that there's nothing she can do about it even if I think that there's something going on between her and the other man. Do you think I'm being too petty?" Pierce asked.Millie and Bill stared at Pierce as if he had grown another head.Pierce didn't have a pitiful, hurt expression at all. Rather, he looked calm and detached and had

"I knew that they wouldn't have let me starve to death, Pierce. But when you're starving, your mind shuts down. You have no idea what it feels like to be in extreme starvation," Millie began. She continued, "After going without food for three days, I couldn't even think straight. I could barely drag myself around. My vision was blurry, and I started to see things that weren't there. At that point, I would have eaten anything."It felt like countless hands were reaching up from my stomach to my throat, begging me to swallow something. All I could do was drink water until I eventually vomited and had to rush to the bathroom. But even after that brief moment of satisfaction, it was still endless hunger."I was jolted awake by hunger in the middle of the night and struggled to fall back asleep. Eventually, exhaustion overcame me, but I still felt the ache of hunger lingering in my dreams."I was so scared that I took a risk and escaped from the balcony. At that moment, I really thought

Millie gently closed the box.Suddenly, a single tear slipped down, landing silently on the surface. Only then did Millie realize that she had been crying. She wasn't sure if she was mourning the love she once had or if her tears were for something else entirely. No wonder Pierce had told her to look at it in private. He didn't want to see her shedding tears for another man."It's all in the past. Why send this now?" Millie murmured. She wiped away her tears and picked up her phone. "Tobias, do me a favor. Auction something for me. Donate every last cent of the proceeds to charity. Not a single penny should be kept."She then ended the call and looked at the small box again. At least this way, it would be put to good use…Afterward, Millie headed to the study to check on Pierce. He watched her closely, his deep eyes unreadable.Millie pretended not to notice and said, "You keep working. I'm just going to sketch for a while."Pierce pressed his lips together as if he wante

Millie followed Pierce back home. As she stepped into the familiar space that belonged to just the two of them, her heart felt heavy with emotions. It had been two months since she had last been here, yet everything remained unchanged. Even the wardrobe had been stocked with new seasonal outfits. In those two months, Millie had lost a lot of weight. So, Pierce instructed the kitchen to prepare nourishing meals for her. He was determined to bring her back to full health.Pierce remained bedridden for another half month before he could finally use a cane to walk around a bit. His right leg was still severely injured, and every step sent searing pain through his body, making his face go pale and his forehead damp with cold sweat.Millie couldn't bear to watch him suffer and urged him to rest. But Pierce was stubborn and walked until his legs trembled, and he could no longer stand. Only then would he sit down."Does it hurt?" Millie worriedly asked."It doesn't. I just need to pr

With that, Millie turned around and left without hesitation. But just as she was about to step out of the room, Stefan's voice called out behind her once more, "Millie, I owe you an apology for everything. I never really said it before. It's late… but at least I'm finally saying it. "Millie, I'm sorry. I was the one in the wrong." Stefan's voice was soft, weakened by his injuries. It sounded as though those few words had drained all the strength from his body.Millie's body stiffened, and her hands were tightly clenched into fists at her sides.Stefan was apologizing at long last.Millie wanted to turn around to see if he was truly sincere or if this was just another one of his manipulations. However, she held herself back. Unimportant people didn't deserve even a second glance.Millie didn't say anything. She didn't say whether she would or would not forgive him. She just walked away.Stefan's face turned even paler. He knew that after everything he had done, he would never

Millie didn't want to see Pierce struggling alone, bottling up all his pain like a wounded lion licking its wounds in solitude.Upon hearing her words, Pierce simply tightened his embrace around her. "Mills… I'm scared…""I know. I understand," Millie whispered, gently patting his back."I'm afraid I won't be able to lift you anymore, and I'm afraid I won't be able to run or jump. I'm scared I won't be able to fight the bad guys and protect you anymore." Pierce's voice was soft and barely above a whisper. His sorrow was almost imperceptible, but it could be because he still hadn't fully released his emotions.Millie started, "You still have me. If you can't carry me, then don't. If you can't run fast or jump high, then I'll slow down and walk beside you. I can be your crutch and your support for a lifetime, okay?"And listen, Pierce, you may not be able to fight on the front lines anymore, but you're still there in spirit. Pierce didn't tell Millie everything—such as the fact that Stefan had initially wanted to kill him. He spared Stefan some dignity, not wanting Millie to hate him forever.Millie stayed in the hospital to care for Pierce for two days when there was finally a change in Stefan's condition. Before he even regained consciousness, he was already calling her name. Robin anxiously rushed in to find Millie, and she hurried over."The patient's wound has gotten infected, leading to complications. We need to start emergency treatment immediately!""How could this have happened? Wasn't he supposed to wake up?" Robin was beside himself with worry."Millie… Millie…" Even in his fevered delirium, Stefan kept murmuring her name.Millie went over to him. His hand, which had been weakly grasping at the air, finally caught hold of something—her fingers. He clung to her tightly."I'm here, Stefan," she softly uttered. It was as if her words held some kind of magic, as Stefan immediately calmed d

Every word Pierce spoke was firm and impactful. Each word hammered on Stefan's heart mercilessly.Pierce owned up to his mistakes. But what about him? Could he do the same? All this while, he had been shifting the blame to everyone else. He blamed Pierce for stealing Millie away. Then, he blamed Millie for not forgiving him. He even blamed Wanda for seducing him, and the list went on…He had blamed so many people, holding onto their faults while conveniently brushing aside his own. When it came to himself, he always found a way to justify his actions. He completely ignored that he was the true cause of everything.Stefan's grip on Pierce's collar loosened. He took a few steps back in a daze and stumbled on his own feet, causing him to nearly fall to the ground."Those criminals… They're planning to strike again. I agreed to help them," Stefan said."Why are you telling me this?" Pierce responded."She said… She said that if you died, she wouldn't live either." Stefan's voice was

Millie gave Pierce a profound look that contained a myriad of emotions. Pierce could have been selfish and not tell her any of Stefan's good deeds. He could've even stopped her from visiting Stefan. Yet, he didn't do that. After giving Pierce one heavy nod, Millie went over to the adjacent hospital room.Stefan was seriously injured too. His health wasn't as good as Pierce's to begin with, so he still hadn't woken up yet.Robin was in his room, sitting beside him. He kept silently wiping away tears at one side."This is my only nephew. If anything were to happen to him, how would I face his late parents?" Robin mournfully said."Does Grandma know about this?" Millie inquired."I don't have the heart to tell Mom about this. She's old and frail. I don't want her to have a breakdown," Robin replied."I'll keep him company, Robin," Millie said.Robin hesitated for a moment and ultimately nodded. He believed that Stefan would want to see Millie upon waking up. So, Millie staye

"Don't move around. You're still very weak. The doctor said to give you some oatmeal porridge when you wake up. Your digestive system is still quite weak, so you need to eat something that goes down easily."A familiar voice sounded in Millie's ears."G-Grandpa? Why are you here? Where's Pierce? Pierce? Pierce…" After a moment of silence, Millie mumbled, "I forgot… Pierce is dead. Not even his body remains.""What nonsense are you speaking, child? Isn't he lying right beside you?" Bill interjected.Millie visibly froze for a second. Then, she whipped her head around to look. As Bill had said, Pierce was indeed right beside her. Layers of gauze were wrapped around his body, and he seemed to be heavily injured. However, his vital signs were steady, and his heartbeat was rhythmic—he was no longer in a critical condition."Pierce…" Millie tumbled out of bed without a care for the pain in her limbs.Bill quickly went over to support her and combined their beds together."H-How is t

Millie broke down emotionally. She was done with Stefan's constant self-righteous justification. He always blamed everyone else and deemed himself free of any wrongdoing. He acted as if the whole world had wronged him, while he had never wronged anyone. He painted himself as the pitiful and innocent victim, twisting logic to justify everything he did.Millie was done acting her part. She would let things play out however they should. There was no longer anything tying her to this world. If anything happened to Pierce, she wouldn't live either. Just the thought of being imprisoned by Stefan for three years was worse than death. And so, she locked herself in her room and refused to come out. Every day, the housekeepers delivered her meals. She had no appetite but still ate well.Millie also no longer cared whether Stefan had drugged her food or not. If she turned into a mindless lunatic, maybe that would be better than this painful clarity.…Days passed one after another. One
