Chapter 149

Author: Feminine Blade
"Pierce! Stop hitting him!" Millie clung tightly to Pierce's arm.

"Let go of me!" Pierce's voice was hoarse and deep, filled with authority.

"No!" Millie's voice was resolute. "If you want to kill him, you'll have to kill me first!"

She was ready to go to any length to calm him down. As expected, her words had the desired effect. Pierce's expression darkened, his gaze complex as it lingered on her.

Without a word, he stood up and left.

Stefan kept coughing, his blood staining the floor a deep red. The hot blood splattered onto Millie's hand.

"What are you standing around for? Get him to the hospital!"

No one dared to call the police that night. Pierce's beating had left Stefan barely alive, but Stefan's attempt at assault was also undeniable, even if it had failed.

Millie glanced at Pierce's disappearing figure, panicked, and tried to follow, only to find Stefan grabbing at her clothes stubbornly. Despite his agony and weakness, he clung to her, his face twisted in pain.

The kiss quickly escalated out of control. Pierce's hands began to wander, lifting her clothing and gripping her. Millie found that she wasn't repelled by his closeness, but she didn't want it to happen in this unclear and distressing situation. She struggled with all her might. "Pierce, what do you think of me?""You're no different from Stefan right now!" she shouted angrily, feeling deeply wronged and her eyes welling up with tears.Pierce's body stiffened sharply at her words, his heart aching as if it were being torn apart. He shouldn't be the abuser! He hurriedly returned to his seat and rolled down the window, letting the night breeze in.Millie felt helpless and gathered her clothes to cover herself."I'm sorry," Pierce finally spoke after a long silence. "I lost control. I shouldn't have treated you like this.""So you always thought this way about me? No matter what I said about not loving Stefan, you thought I was lying, that I still had a place for him in my heart."

"How many times do I have to say it for you to understand? I don't love Stefan anymore—I hate him! Can you help me to get rid of this? Please, I'm begging you!" Millie pleaded desperately.Pierce held her shoulders, his gaze steady on hers. "Are you sure you want me to remove it?"Millie nodded firmly."Then, close your eyes," he instructed. As if entranced, Millie obediently closed her eyes. In that moment, she was nothing short of perfect in Pierce's eyes. She had always been pure and innocent to him. Any inappropriate thoughts would be a form of disrespect to her, so he dared not entertain them. His eyes fell on the hickey on her neck. He slowly leaned down and pressed his lips against it. His tongue brushed gently over the hickey, and Millie shivered in response. It stung at first, but gradually, the pain ebbed away into a soothing warmth. The tenderness of his kiss seemed to dissolve her pain. Although his touch occasionally intensified the ache, it also awakened a fee

Upon hearing Sharon's words, Millie massaged her temples, feeling a headache coming on. "Yeah, you're right.""That's just terrible! No matter how hard you try to explain yourself, people will always doubt you when it comes to such a thing. Stefan is such a jerk! He really screwed you over!" Sharon exclaimed."I didn't expect him to be so paranoid either," Millie replied."Speaking of which, Pierce is way too patient, isn't he? Even with the idea that you might have cheated on him, he's still putting up with everything?" Sharon asked, incredulous. Millie sighed at Sharon's words. "What do you think? He doesn't have any feelings for me, and our marriage is contractual. What does he even care? Honestly, even if I stood naked in front of him, he wouldn't even bat an eye.""How can he stand it? You're gorgeous, and your figure is amazing. How could he not fall for you?" Sharon protested. If Sharon were a man, she'd be grinning in her sleep at the thought of having someone like Mill

"There are no painkillers left," Millie said."I'll ask the doctor to bring some over," Pierce said. Then, he picked up his phone to make a call. But Millie stopped him. "Never mind. It's so late now, and the doctor needs to rest. There's no need to bother him just for painkillers. I can go to the pharmacy tomorrow and get them myself."After all, it wasn't like she couldn't handle the pain for just one night."Does it hurt a lot?" Pierce asked.Wanting to spare him any guilt, Millie lied, "It's not that badâ€Ķ"As she spoke, Pierce gently touched the bandage on her wound. Even though he was careful, his touch still made her wince in pain.It had hurt like hell!Seeing her reaction, Pierce frowned. "Actually, there's another kind of painkiller. Do you want to try it?""Really? What is it? As long as it can relieve the pain, any brand is fine," she asked quickly.Hearing this, Pierce took a step closer. He cupped Millie's head with one hand while pulling her closer to him. Mil

"I just went to buy it. Having a car makes it all so convenient," Pierce said.Millie replied, "I just didn't want to bother anyone, that's why I—" "—I'm not 'anyone,' and it's no trouble for me. Just take your medicine and get some rest," Pierce cut her off, his tone firm yet gentle. Noticing that he'd even brought her a glass of warm water, Millie felt moved, but it also left a bittersweet ache in her heart. Pierce was so thoughtful and treated her well. But she knew it was only because she was Mrs. Atkinson. As his lawful wife, it was his duty to care for her. Moreover, Pierce was a man with high principles who lived by his moral compass. That was why he was so good to her.Maybe he didn't see anything wrong with it, but this could lead her to fall even deeper for him. After all, how could anyone resist a man who had pulled her out of a living hell and given her respect and dignity? Specifically, Pierce always seemed to be there whenever she needed him most. Could such a g

"You're still lying in the hospital, and your injuries are severe. It'll take some time to heal. Do you think we should postpone our wedding?" Wanda asked. "No, it's fine. The doctor said I'll be able to walk by then. As long as I stay away from alcohol, there shouldn't be any problems," Stefan replied.Wanda felt a wave of relief. She had always dreamed of becoming Mrs. Leach, and now it was finally about to come true. She asked again, "How's the wedding dress coming along?" Honestly, Wanda didn't think her designers were good enough to design her wedding dress. She had wanted to ask Aurora to design it for her. But to her surprise, Stefan had already found a designer and told her not to worry. Since he had already made up his mind, she didn't want to argue. Holding her hand, Stefan said, "I'll check on it. Don't worry. I'll make sure you're the most beautiful bride in the world." Wanda smiled shyly in response before going off to fetch him something. After she left, Stefan

In truth, Stefan just couldn't handle how easily Millie had stopped loving him. Millie was clear that she could never compare to Wanda; there was always a difference between being able to have something and not being able to, and Stefan's wounded pride and frustration over losing her were what made him treat her this way.Millie also knew all too well that if she ever gave her heart back to Stefan, he would not only see her as easy and cheap but would eventually grow tired of her. Meeting his bloodshot eyes with a steady gaze, Millie pried his fingers off her wrist one by one. A surge of satisfaction washed over her, but she didn't let it show. After all, Stefan saw love and hate as the same thing. Hatred meant he still held a place in her heart. But to be neither loved nor hated? That was what would hurt him most. So, no matter how angry or resentful she felt, she had to keep her expression calm."You're mistaken, Mr. Leach. I don't love you anymore. You should go and live a g

Before long, Millie and Wanda arrived at the cafÃĐ downstairs from the hospital."Stay away from Stefan," Wanda threatened.Millie smiled and calmly took a sip of her coffee. "Please get it straight. I'm not obsessed with him; he's the one who's simping for me like crazy."Wanda felt a wave of relief at Millie's words. The voice recorder she had been secretly holding would finally come in handy! She feigned indignation and said, "Millie, do you have to be that rude? You and Stefan were together for three years!""He spent those three years telling everyone I was his simp. I don't think he's been kind to me at all," Millie shot back."It's my fault that Stefan broke your heart. I sincerely apologize and ask that you forgive him. Also, I don't need that wedding dress from you anymore. Anyway, I'll still pay you the money," Wanda said."What a good request! Once you send me the final payment, just draw up a contract and have a lawyer notarize it," Millie replied."Let's be honest, M

Millie gently closed the box.Suddenly, a single tear slipped down, landing silently on the surface. Only then did Millie realize that she had been crying. She wasn't sure if she was mourning the love she once had or if her tears were for something else entirely. No wonder Pierce had told her to look at it in private. He didn't want to see her shedding tears for another man."It's all in the past. Why send this now?" Millie murmured. She wiped away her tears and picked up her phone. "Tobias, do me a favor. Auction something for me. Donate every last cent of the proceeds to charity. Not a single penny should be kept."She then ended the call and looked at the small box again. At least this way, it would be put to good useâ€ĶAfterward, Millie headed to the study to check on Pierce. He watched her closely, his deep eyes unreadable.Millie pretended not to notice and said, "You keep working. I'm just going to sketch for a while."Pierce pressed his lips together as if he wante

Millie followed Pierce back home. As she stepped into the familiar space that belonged to just the two of them, her heart felt heavy with emotions. It had been two months since she had last been here, yet everything remained unchanged. Even the wardrobe had been stocked with new seasonal outfits. In those two months, Millie had lost a lot of weight. So, Pierce instructed the kitchen to prepare nourishing meals for her. He was determined to bring her back to full health.Pierce remained bedridden for another half month before he could finally use a cane to walk around a bit. His right leg was still severely injured, and every step sent searing pain through his body, making his face go pale and his forehead damp with cold sweat.Millie couldn't bear to watch him suffer and urged him to rest. But Pierce was stubborn and walked until his legs trembled, and he could no longer stand. Only then would he sit down."Does it hurt?" Millie worriedly asked."It doesn't. I just need to pr

With that, Millie turned around and left without hesitation. But just as she was about to step out of the room, Stefan's voice called out behind her once more, "Millie, I owe you an apology for everything. I never really said it before. It's lateâ€Ķ but at least I'm finally saying it. "Millie, I'm sorry. I was the one in the wrong." Stefan's voice was soft, weakened by his injuries. It sounded as though those few words had drained all the strength from his body.Millie's body stiffened, and her hands were tightly clenched into fists at her sides.Stefan was apologizing at long last.Millie wanted to turn around to see if he was truly sincere or if this was just another one of his manipulations. However, she held herself back. Unimportant people didn't deserve even a second glance.Millie didn't say anything. She didn't say whether she would or would not forgive him. She just walked away.Stefan's face turned even paler. He knew that after everything he had done, he would never

Millie didn't want to see Pierce struggling alone, bottling up all his pain like a wounded lion licking its wounds in solitude.Upon hearing her words, Pierce simply tightened his embrace around her. "Millsâ€Ķ I'm scaredâ€Ķ""I know. I understand," Millie whispered, gently patting his back."I'm afraid I won't be able to lift you anymore, and I'm afraid I won't be able to run or jump. I'm scared I won't be able to fight the bad guys and protect you anymore." Pierce's voice was soft and barely above a whisper. His sorrow was almost imperceptible, but it could be because he still hadn't fully released his emotions.Millie started, "You still have me. If you can't carry me, then don't. If you can't run fast or jump high, then I'll slow down and walk beside you. I can be your crutch and your support for a lifetime, okay?"And listen, Pierce, you may not be able to fight on the front lines anymore, but you're still there in spirit. Pierce didn't tell Millie everything—such as the fact that Stefan had initially wanted to kill him. He spared Stefan some dignity, not wanting Millie to hate him forever.Millie stayed in the hospital to care for Pierce for two days when there was finally a change in Stefan's condition. Before he even regained consciousness, he was already calling her name. Robin anxiously rushed in to find Millie, and she hurried over."The patient's wound has gotten infected, leading to complications. We need to start emergency treatment immediately!""How could this have happened? Wasn't he supposed to wake up?" Robin was beside himself with worry."Millieâ€Ķ Millieâ€Ķ" Even in his fevered delirium, Stefan kept murmuring her name.Millie went over to him. His hand, which had been weakly grasping at the air, finally caught hold of something—her fingers. He clung to her tightly."I'm here, Stefan," she softly uttered. It was as if her words held some kind of magic, as Stefan immediately calmed d

Every word Pierce spoke was firm and impactful. Each word hammered on Stefan's heart mercilessly.Pierce owned up to his mistakes. But what about him? Could he do the same? All this while, he had been shifting the blame to everyone else. He blamed Pierce for stealing Millie away. Then, he blamed Millie for not forgiving him. He even blamed Wanda for seducing him, and the list went onâ€ĶHe had blamed so many people, holding onto their faults while conveniently brushing aside his own. When it came to himself, he always found a way to justify his actions. He completely ignored that he was the true cause of everything.Stefan's grip on Pierce's collar loosened. He took a few steps back in a daze and stumbled on his own feet, causing him to nearly fall to the ground."Those criminalsâ€Ķ They're planning to strike again. I agreed to help them," Stefan said."Why are you telling me this?" Pierce responded."She saidâ€Ķ She said that if you died, she wouldn't live either." Stefan's voice was

Millie gave Pierce a profound look that contained a myriad of emotions. Pierce could have been selfish and not tell her any of Stefan's good deeds. He could've even stopped her from visiting Stefan. Yet, he didn't do that. After giving Pierce one heavy nod, Millie went over to the adjacent hospital room.Stefan was seriously injured too. His health wasn't as good as Pierce's to begin with, so he still hadn't woken up yet.Robin was in his room, sitting beside him. He kept silently wiping away tears at one side."This is my only nephew. If anything were to happen to him, how would I face his late parents?" Robin mournfully said."Does Grandma know about this?" Millie inquired."I don't have the heart to tell Mom about this. She's old and frail. I don't want her to have a breakdown," Robin replied."I'll keep him company, Robin," Millie said.Robin hesitated for a moment and ultimately nodded. He believed that Stefan would want to see Millie upon waking up. So, Millie staye

"Don't move around. You're still very weak. The doctor said to give you some oatmeal porridge when you wake up. Your digestive system is still quite weak, so you need to eat something that goes down easily."A familiar voice sounded in Millie's ears."G-Grandpa? Why are you here? Where's Pierce? Pierce? Pierceâ€Ķ" After a moment of silence, Millie mumbled, "I forgotâ€Ķ Pierce is dead. Not even his body remains.""What nonsense are you speaking, child? Isn't he lying right beside you?" Bill interjected.Millie visibly froze for a second. Then, she whipped her head around to look. As Bill had said, Pierce was indeed right beside her. Layers of gauze were wrapped around his body, and he seemed to be heavily injured. However, his vital signs were steady, and his heartbeat was rhythmic—he was no longer in a critical condition."Pierceâ€Ķ" Millie tumbled out of bed without a care for the pain in her limbs.Bill quickly went over to support her and combined their beds together."H-How is t

Millie broke down emotionally. She was done with Stefan's constant self-righteous justification. He always blamed everyone else and deemed himself free of any wrongdoing. He acted as if the whole world had wronged him, while he had never wronged anyone. He painted himself as the pitiful and innocent victim, twisting logic to justify everything he did.Millie was done acting her part. She would let things play out however they should. There was no longer anything tying her to this world. If anything happened to Pierce, she wouldn't live either. Just the thought of being imprisoned by Stefan for three years was worse than death. And so, she locked herself in her room and refused to come out. Every day, the housekeepers delivered her meals. She had no appetite but still ate well.Millie also no longer cared whether Stefan had drugged her food or not. If she turned into a mindless lunatic, maybe that would be better than this painful clarity.â€ĶDays passed one after another. One
