Chapter 43

Police sirens disturbed the quietness of the forest. Chief Danillo personally went with the officers to see Max and his sister upon receiving their call that they were at the Sanatorium. Aside from the broken door and the blood spilled on the floor, they found Max and Georgia sitting idly unscathed inside the now abandoned castle of the Nightcrawlers.

“They got Anderson,” Max announced mindlessly, his voice sounded neutral and hollow. “They got Anderson, Chief,” he repeated, his voice almost cracked, his eyes firmly looking at the Chief.

“I’m sorry Carter, we came late,” the Chief said, sympathetic. “You have nothing to worry about, we’ll be searching for her all night. They wouldn’t reach anywhere far from here,” he assured and lifted his hand to pat him on his back. His gaze landed on Georgia whose eyes were nervously roaming around, watching

The sun had settled itself into the horizon as Max dragged the last box of Claire’s things inside her newly renovated apartment. Just across the building was the view of the bay that glistens like a thousand crystals floating at any point of the day.“Do you have any plans tonight?” Max spun around, and saw Claire’s hands occupied with plastic bags that looked like a whole bunch of meats and cans of beers. She wiggled her eyebrows at him which made him chuckle.“None that I can trade for with cans of beer,” he answered grinning. He walked towards her to get the plastics and put them on the kitchen. Claire’s place was big enough to have a small kitchen area, a bathroom that fits a bathtub, and even had space for her computers beside the bed. She had the walls painted white and designed it in Scandinavian style, matching all of her furniture and decors in a warm nude color scheme with a t

“Are you leaving already?” Claire peered through the door of her room and asked Max who was already wearing his jacket. Flicking the lights on, she squinted her eyes when the light hit them. She glanced on the clock that was ticking near eleven o’clock midnight. She didn’t realize she fell asleep while watching a movie with the boys at the living room, and then woke up already tucked in her bed.“Yeah,” Max answered. “The Chief wants us to get early in the office tomorrow. There’s an upcoming case that he prefers we two should handle,” he answered as he walked near her.“Okay, drive safely, please pick me up tomorrow, Hoon and Lance also need to get back, they can’t stay here.” Claire requested sleepy, her eyes half-closed. Max gave her a small smile.“You should sleep more, I’ll go ahead okay?” Max turned around and w

“Mr. Hooper,” Max called and stood up. “A not so good day to meet you.” Stretching his arm for a handshake, Max already felt his blood boil upon seeing the face of the only Nightcrawler that they caught after a long time of chasing. Calix Hooper received his hand and shook it tightly, holding Max in his mischievous gaze.“Well, I was hoping for the Chief so…it’s definitely also not a good day for me to meet you instead,” he said, breaking the handshake and sat down right away. He leaned back against the chair and lifted his legs, casually putting them crossed above the table. “Did he sent you here? What did he say about my proposal?”Max sat down quietly, he didn’t let him have the upper hand and went straight to the point. “He’s still thinking whether to accept your offer or not,” he said trying to sound provocative as much as he can. But Cali

Max is a keeper of his word. He was really going to make a deal with Calix Hooper to get him out in exchange of his information but as soon as his mind was filled with all the odious stories of Iris, he couldn’t suddenly grasp the reason why he should help him get free.He still had so many questions—where are the Nightcrawlers are hiding now? Is it really true that Lieutenant Fonollosa was dead? Who is that Lieutenant and just how powerful is he to cover the crime that he did on Iris’ family?Does Iris really had that ability that Pavo Hatcher inflicted on her?He could remember all the inexplicable times when he really thought that were only an effect of the medications he’s taking. He remember the very first time he saw Iris do it, the second day after she came in St. Valen’s unit. He definitely saw at the corner of his eyes when Iris was facing him as he talked with an offi

I can’t believe he’s that kind, we shouldn’t trust kindness remember.” Hoon clicked on one link and a thousand codes of numbers and alphabets colored in green and red filled the screen in columns, flowing like a stream of water. After a whole minute, it came into a halt with a bar blinking for a few times before the screen turned white and St. Valen’s database flashed right in front of their eyes.“Ah-ssa!” he exclaimed and giddily scrolled down on hundred police officers’ profiles. He hovered to the search engine and typed Max’s name.“You better

“She’s been like that for a couple of months now.” Hoon pulled Claire’s blanket further over her chest. Max was sitting beside her across, staring with the worry still engraved on his face.“What do you mean for months? She didn’t tell me anything,” Max answered. Partly, he kind of actually understand why he doesn’t know much about Claire for the past month—the past year, even. He was aloof from her, and avoiding much conversations that might lead to a topic about Iris. Devastated was the term he named for the feeling in his chest, but he also knows it roots on penitence. He could’ve saved Claire, he could have done better choices that night, but instead Iris was the one who even let her free and he lost her too. While he was just there, standing still like a coward that he is. And from then on, he couldn’t even utter her name anymore, as if it was something that

The old man from the front desk was seen sleeping on the footage, both his feet placed over his desk, Max heard the Chief sighed in disappointment. Acouple of police officers went in, and parted ways after glancing at each other. Their faces weren’t visible because of the police cap and surgical masks they were wearing and the thick-framed glasses which blocked the sight of their eyes. The Chief flicked the screen to another camera which was giving out the view of the cells and the elevator that goes upward. One of those masked officer walked in and glanced on ea
