Chapter 286

Author: Hardy Banana
It was too late by the time I yelled. I felt the car tilt and veer toward the side of the road.

Sophie quickly grabbed the steering wheel, but it was too late.

There was a loud bang as our car crashed into a flower bed.

Thankfully, we had not been going very fast, and I had my seatbelt on. I just jerked forward and hit my knee.

My first thought was to check my belly. To my relief, I had not hit it.

While I was rubbing my knee, Sophie was panicking and on the verge of tears. “Cassia, are you okay? Please tell me that you’re fine! This is bad. You can’t be hurt. I can’t afford this. My mom will kill me, Cassia…”

“Stop yelling.” She was so noisy. “I’m fine. I told you to focus on driving. Look what happened!”

“Are you sure you’re okay?”

“I’m fine. The airbags didn’t even deploy.”

Sophie got out to check her car for damage, but I could hear her crying outside. “I just got this car last month! The lights are all broken!”

“Just replace them.”

“It’s a limited edition! If I chang

Previously, Zach did not fight back when Hayden hit him. This time was different. Zach threw the first punch, and Hayden could not beat him.Sophie sounded a bit excited. “Cassia, I’m going to help! I’ll distract him!”“Don’t go over there! Fights can get messy. You might get hurt!”“I won’t! Oh, no! Zach just knocked Hayden down with a left hook!”What was Zach trying to do? Anger began to fill my being, and I ran toward them. Hayden was wearing black, and without thinking, I jumped in front of him to shield him. “Zach, that’s enough!”Zach must have swung at me because I felt the wind rush past my ear. Hayden wrapped his arms around me to protect me. However, that punch from Zach did not land on me.He breathed heavily and said, “Cassia, you’re having my babies, yet you’re with Hayden—”“After the babies are born, I’ll give them to the Gordon family. Whether they let you see the babies is another matter. If you want kids, you can have one with Cecilia.” I gently touched

Sophie leaned in with curiosity while I stayed close to Hayden. I was not really sure how I felt.Honestly, Zach deserved his fate for falling in love with someone like Cecilia. However, she was such a jerk. She changed her attitude faster than flipping a page. She turned on a guy who would do anything for her just like that? I wanted to slap her out of pure frustration. Then again, why should I care?I squeezed Hayden’s hand. “Let’s go. I’m tired.”Just then, I heard footsteps. Zach was approaching me.“Cassia,” he called out to me.I replied, “Your fiancee’s here. Don’t bother me.”“When’s your next check-up? I’ll go with you.”“That’s not necessary.”“I’m the father. It’s what I’m supposed to do.”I was at a loss for words. I grabbed Sophie and Hayden to keep them from jumping at him.“Why don’t you go fix your own mess?”I walked to the car and heard Cecilia calling out to me, “Cassia, let’s go for tea some time.”“Dream on, Cecilia!” Sophie snapped.I got into H

Sophie was getting ahead of herself again. Honestly, Zach was horrible, but he was also pretty unfortunate. He loved Cecilia with all his heart, and in doing so, he pushed everyone away. In the end, she betrayed him.Sophie was ecstatic on the way home. She bounced around like she was about to celebrate with fireworks. She wanted to stay at my house that night, but I said no. I did not want her to talk my ear off all night. The next day, Cecilia called me; she wanted to meet for tea. I figured that she had something to tell me. It was probably similar to what her mom had mentioned the other day. I was curious to see how heartless she really was, so I decided to go.We met at a coffee shop near my house. I had not eaten breakfast, so the moment I sat down, I started ordering food. I was so hungry that I felt like I could eat a whole cow.Cecilia was watching me closely. I pointed at the menu and told the waitress, “I’ll have a grilled chicken sandwich, onion rings, a side of

The food I ordered arrived, and the smell was amazing. Since I could not see Cecilia clearly, I could enjoy my meal. If I had to look at her face, I would not have been able to eat.The grilled chicken sandwich was delicious, and I really dug in. Meanwhile, Cecilia just sat there and watched me eat with her arms crossed. Once I was halfway full, I stopped to take a sip of water. “Did you invite me out to get rid of Zach? Your mom already came to see me a few days ago.”“Don’t say it that way. It’s not about getting rid of Zach. I know that you won’t give up on him so easily. You’re just with that doctor as a backup. You still love Zach. Cassia, I’m telling you not to miss this great opportunity. You don’t care if Zach has money or power, right? I’ve always told you that you two are perfect for each other.”“When did you ever say that?” I could not believe how shameless she was. I almost threw up my food. “If Zach heard you say that, how do you think he would feel?”“I feel like

Mr. Pepper entered just in time to help me out of the restaurant. Cecilia was too busy paying the bill to chase after me.Every time I spent time with Cecilia, she managed to shock me with her shamelessness.I believed that she did not break up with Zach right away because he had given everything up for her. She was probably worried that he might get angry and hurt her if she suddenly dumped him. These situations happened all the time, not just in romantic movies but also in real life.As I got into the car, I heard Cecilia shouting my name, “Cassia! You’ve always wanted Zach, and now, I’m giving him to you. Don’t you want him?” Back when she asked me to give her Zach, she said something similar. He was like an item to her.I told Mr. Pepper, “Drive.” The car took off and left Cecilia far behind. Right then, I stuck my finger into my ears. After I listened to her ridiculous comments, my ears felt like they were full of wax.On the way, I received a call from Mary. She told me

Eloise was hooked up to an IV, and I stayed with her for a while. The medicine must have made her sleepy because she dozed off mid-conversation. Once she was asleep, I tucked her in and quietly slipped out of the room.Mary was no longer outside. I only saw Mr. Pepper.“Where’s Mary?”“I’m not sure where she went.”I wanted to say goodbye. ‘Should I wait for her?’Since we were at Hayden’s hospital, I figured that I would look for him while I waited.Holding on to the rail in the hallway, I walked forward. “Mr. Pepper, you can wait here. I’ll go up to the sixth floor by myself.”“Are you sure?”“Yeah, I’ll be fine. There are handrails, and I can see a bit now.”Eventually, I got to the stairwell, and the elevator was just ahead.Suddenly, I heard Mary’s voice from the stairwell. “Your grandma’s fine. You need to take care of yourself out here. It’s not like home.”“Cassia’s here too?” I soon heard Zach’s voice as well.“Yes. She’s been with Eloise for a while. I need to g

“Don’t talk if you have nothing to say, then.” I tried to walk out. However, Zach suddenly grabbed my arm. “Cassia.”“Enough already!” I was incredibly annoyed. As I shook him off in anger, I hit my hand on the iron railing. It hurt a lot.I rubbed my hand in response. Zach was bad luck; nothing good ever happened when he was around.“Cassia, let me see your hand.” He came closer to grab my hand, but I pulled away. The more we struggled, the more it hurt. I finally stopped resisting and allowed him to examine my hand.“Are you done looking at it? Should I chop it off and give it to you as a keepsake?” I said, Then, I retracted my hand. My wrist had to be swollen at this point.“I’ll take you to get some ointment.”“No, thanks. My boyfriend is a doctor. I can just go to him.”“Cassia,” he uttered my name softly. There was something different in his slightly shaky voice. Why was there a hint of sadness?Oh, I got it. Given how sensitive Zach was, he probably realized that C

I pretended that Zach did not exist. I was sure he was losing it. The woman he loved deeply no longer treated him the same. His change in status also made others treat him differently. So, yeah, his mind was probably all messed up.What a shame. He used to be a business legend. He ended up like this after he threw it all away for a woman. When I stepped out of the hospital, Mr. Pepper hesitated before he said, “Ms. Freeman, maybe you could wait here at the entrance while I get the car?”“Sure, go ahead.”Mr. Pepper then went to the underground parking lot, and I waited by the flowerbed outside. It was the first day in winter that the temperature was below zero. As such, I was shivering from the cold.Suddenly, Zach put his coat over my shoulders.I did not like accepting favors out of the blue. So, I shrugged and let his coat slide right off.“That’s not necessary. Mr. Pepper will be here in a few minutes. I won’t freeze to death in that span of time.”“Just wear it.” He p

Sophie knocked on my door the next day around 7 a.m.I only managed to fall asleep at about 2 a.m., so I had a bad headache. I sat on the bed as she ran over excitedly and asked, “Are you busy this morning?” “Go away.” I lay down again. “Come to the city hall with me. I’m getting married!”“Why do you need me there? Am I going to breastfeed you?”“You don’t have milk right now.” I was disgusted by our conversation. Rachel sat up from the bed and asked, “Why are you going to the city hall?”“To get married.”“Shouldn’t you be going to a church for that? There’s supposed to be a priest with a bible that asks if you’re willing to marry this person next to you regardless of… something?”“That’s a religious wedding. Besides, it has to be lawful. What we’re doing today is the legal side of things.” Sophie carried Rachel up from the bed. “Do you want to be a witness to our marriage?” “Yay, sure!” Rachel immediately beamed and agreed. “I want to be the priest who holds the bibl

Cecilia had no shame at all. I would be speechless if this worked on Zach. After a while, she walked out dejectedly with her flowers. It seemed like she did not even manage to enter his office. She stood there in annoyance for a while before she suddenly looked over in my direction. I could see her, but she might not be able to see me. I was on a high floor, and the sun was blinding. Right then, Hailey gave me a call. I knew that she wanted to rant about Cecilia. Sure enough, Hailey started to complain, “Ms. Freeman, Cecilia is really shameless. I’ve never seen such a shameless woman. When Mr. Gordon was cut off from Gordon Corporation, she abandoned him immediately. Now that she knows he’s going to be Gordon Corporation’s acting CEO, she instantly starts visiting him again. I really can’t stand her.” “Hasn’t she always been like this?” I was unfazed. “Fortunately, Mr. Gordon is not willing to see her.” Hailey sounded relieved. “Do you really think he won’t see her fo

I looked at Austin’s pale face, and I was at a loss for words. His argument was reasonable, and I had no way to refute it. I was upset, but I could not cry. I felt a heavy feeling in my chest, and I found it hard to breathe. He looked at me and suddenly smiled. “Look at your face. Have I ever said that I liked Sophie? I don’t like girls like her. I prefer girls like you who are smart, beautiful, and decisive. Why don’t you marry me after you give birth to your babies?”I did not want to joke around with him. It was not funny. After that, Lucy exited the bridal shop and got into the backseat of the car. I stood in front of the bridal shop and watched as his car disappeared into the corner. “Cassia,” Sophie called out to me. I turned around. “What?”“Whose side are you on? I realize you’ve been extra nice to Austin recently. Have you forgotten that he’s a jerk?”“Watch your mouth.”I got into my car unhappily. “I’ll make a move first.”“Aren’t we having dinner together to

I knew that he was looking at the photos of him and Sophie in her wedding gown. Perhaps this would be the only time in his entire life that he could stand next to Sophie while she was dressed in a wedding gown. I felt the waterworks coming. When I tried to look for tissue papers in my bag, Zach called me. He sounded a bit excited. “Cassia, there’s this person overseas who has the same blood type as Austin. He has ALS, which is a fatal motor neuron disease. His family has already signed an organ donation form for him, and his condition recently worsened. He may pass in a month’s time, so I got in contact with them. His family has agreed to donate his heart to Austin.” “Really?” It was good news, and I almost leaped in joy. I glanced at Austin excitedly. He was staring intently at his phone, so he did not notice me. “Does Austin have to leave immediately?”“It’s still early. We can leave when the donor’s condition worsens.” I estimated the time. Zach said that it would ta

Sophie could easily start a fight wherever she went. I immediately went over and saw that Austin’s forehead had turned red. It seemed to be getting swollen. I kicked Sophie in anger. “Is there something wrong with you? What are you doing?” “Why did you kick me? Didn’t you hear what he just said?”Austin bent down and picked up Sophie’s phone for her. “Luckily, your phone screen isn’t cracked. It’s fine if my skull is cracked; it can heal.” Sophie took her phone, and it immediately unlocked due to face ID. Her wallpaper was a photo of Kingston and her. She had just changed the wallpaper yesterday. It used to be a photo of me and her. Austin was the one who had taken that photo. Even though Austin was not directly in the photo, it felt like it was a photo of the three of us. He must have noticed it. He smiled and said, “I’ll make a move. Tell Lucy I’ll be waiting for her in the car.” Austin walked out of the bridal shop, and Sophie looked dispirited. “I was quite happy, bu

“You’re getting married too?”“I’ll be your best man or maid of honor. What? You’re too cheap to pay for the outfits?”“You, my best man?”“Look around you. Are there any single people left?”Sophie rolled her eyes. “Hah, I wasn’t planning on inviting you.”Kingston tried to shake Austin’s hand, but Austin ignored him. Sophie got mad and pulled Kingston away. “Don’t pay attention to him. He thinks he’s too good for anyone. He’s crazy.”“Sophie,” I warned.“What? He’s always acting crazy!” she yelled.I was not sure if Austin really wanted to be Sophie’s best man, or if it was just an excuse to come here.Anyway, Austin went to change too. I could not tell the difference between the best man’s and groom’s outfits. However, the difference between the bridesmaid and bride was clear. While Sophie was posing in front of the mirror in her wedding dress, Austin came out of the fitting room.Austin was very thin, and the suit hung loosely on him, but it still looked good.He had a

Sophie’s wedding preparations were progressing quickly. She limped to work in the mornings and dragged me along in the afternoons to buy wedding stuff.I felt like the wedding was just an excuse for her to go shopping.“This afternoon, Kingston and I are trying on our wedding outfits. You should come too.”“It’s your wedding. Why should I come?”“To help me choose! I look good in everything, so it’s hard to pick.”“If it’s that hard, just buy them all. Aren’t you rich?”“Why are you so grouchy?” She leaned closer and observed me. “Cassia, are your hormones off balance?”“I’m pregnant, so everything’s a mess right now.”After some thought, I called Austin and told him, “Sophie’s trying on wedding dresses this afternoon.”“Okay,” he replied in his usual lifeless tone.“Aren’t you going to say anything to her?”“Don’t eat too much. The wedding dress will be a pain to alter.”I was so angry that I hung up. He was so stubborn. I was sure that he would regret it and cry later.M

Austin was the weakest among us when we were kids. He could not climb trees, run, or do anything physically demanding. Instead, he would play board games and puzzles with us.Sophie always thought that he was smart, and she admired him.I never imagined that someone I grew up with might die so soon.“You should leave,” he said weakly. “She should be done by now.”“Austin.” I wanted to say something more, but he turned his back to me.He did not want to listen, so I had no choice but to leave. As I reached the door, I heard him say, “Actually, this is a good thing.”Was he saying that Sophie marrying Kingston was a good thing? What was good about it?I felt like grabbing Sophie over. I wanted to point at the dying man in bed and say, “This guy loves you more than you know. He helped you test Kingston’s character. He thinks about you all the time. He comes to see you every night using his half-sister as an excuse, but he’s dying. He doesn’t want you to be sad, so he plans to die

“I just went for a checkup.” Austin walked over to me. “Why are you sweating so much?”He took a handkerchief out of his pocket and gave it to me. Honestly, only Austin would still carry a handkerchief in his condition.I wiped my sweat. “I came with Sophie to get her cast off, and I thought I’d stop by to see you.”“Get her cast off? I thought that wasn’t until next month?”“She insisted on getting it off today. The doctor checked, and her bone is healing well, so it’s fine for her to take it off.”“When did she start caring so much about her looks?” Austin walked back to his room, and I followed him.He sat down and seemed a little out of breath. I had already asked the doctor about him. Austin could not engage in any physical activity; he could not even walk fast.I was about to pour him some water, but he waved me off. “Don’t bother. I’m not thirsty. How could I let you take care of me? I might be a patient, but you’re pregnant.”At least, he could still joke. If I were him
