Chapter 186

Author: Hardy Banana
“Rachel…” He had only uttered her name, but my heart dropped.

Was Cecilia causing trouble again?

That did not make sense. She knew that today was Zach and Cameron’s signing day. She would not do something foolish on such an important day.

“What happened to Rachel?”

“Cecilia took her to see her mom,” Cameron said through gritted teeth. Just then, Zach rushed over.

We exchanged a quick glance, and Zach looked upset.

We got into the car, and Zach immediately called Cecilia. “Where are you?”

“Put it on speaker,” Cameron said concisely.

Zach switched to speaker mode, and Cecilia’s excited voice came through. “Zach, guess where I am right now?”

“Where?”

“You won’t guess it! Zach, you have no idea how clever I am. I found Rachel’s mom! I know Cameron wants to find a stepmom for Rachel, and she doesn’t want that, so I brought Rachel to meet her mom.”

I could not stand to listen anymore and started to sweat.

What was wrong with this woman? Did she really think she was being clever?

We walked out of the house and could still hear the woman crying.Cameron had already taken Rachel away, and the three of us stood in the garden.Cecilia looked down with tears in her eyes. “Zach, I didn’t know Cameron would get so angry. I was just trying to help you—”“Enough.” Zach cut her off. “Let’s talk about this later.”Zach got into the car, but Cecilia stayed outside. What was she waiting for? Did she think Zach would help her into the car?I got in too. Zach leaned out the window and told Cecilia, “You can go back by yourself. We have things to do.”Then, he started the car and drove off.I could see the surprise and fear on her face in the rearview mirror. She really messed things up. If it were not for her, Zach and Cameron would have finished their deal and been celebrating.Zach was anxious and drove fast. I tried to reassure him. “I’ll call Cameron later. He’s still upset right now.”“Okay, thanks,” he replied and bit his lip.I could see that he was frustr

When someone did not want to talk, I never pushed them to. They would speak when they were ready. If they did not want to share, it meant they were not ready to open up.Cameron finished his tequila, and he seemed fine. I turned to Sophie, and she quickly brought him another glass. When he almost finished his second glass, he finally spoke.“That woman we saw earlier is Rachel’s mom.”“Oh.” I nodded. “Rachel looks a lot like her, especially when it comes to her eyes.”“Her name is Scarlett York. I met her when she had just turned eighteen.” Cameron took a deep breath and leaned back on the couch. He held his drink and looked more relaxed.I was ready to listen since he wanted to talk.“I met her in West City, so I feel a special connection to this place.” He suddenly looked at me. “I think the girls from West City are all cute and precious.”I smiled back. I could hear how much he cared for Rachel’s mother. I wondered why he would not let Rachel meet her. There had to be a rea

Cameron decided to keep drinking and sharing his feelings. He wanted to let out the pain he had inside.I promised myself that I would not tell anyone what he said, not even Sophie. If there came a point where I had to keep others silent, I would be ready for that too.I turned to Sophie at the bar, and she was trying to listen in. When she saw me glaring, she quickly looked away.“She needed treatment, but by then, Rachel had already been in her belly for over four months. She couldn’t terminate the pregnancy, so she had to go with an induction. Sometimes, she would be aware of what was happening. She cried and begged me not to get rid of the baby. I softened at that moment and didn’t go through with it. She didn’t get any treatment during her pregnancy, and I watched as she lost herself even more.”I could guess the rest of the story without him saying it.After giving birth, Scarlett completely lost her mind and had to go to a hospital for treatment. She did not recognize Ca

“Answer it and put it on speaker.”Sophie pressed the speaker button while I kept kneading the dough. No wonder Sophie loved baking so much. Kneading the dough really helped to alleviate my stress.Cecilia’s weak voice came through the phone. “Cassia, what did you say to Cameron? Don’t you think you’ve gone too far? It’s fine if you hate me, but why did you mess up Zach and Cameron’s partnership? Do you know how much Zach cares about this project? He’s put all his time into it. Even though you and Zach are divorced—”Cecilia kept rambling, so Sophie leaned in and yelled into the phone, “Are you out of your mind, Cecilia?! Don’t try to shift the blame to Cassia! You know what you did!”“Don’t waste your breath.” I ended the call and left a white fingerprint on the screen.“Cecilia’s ridiculous. She knows what she did, yet she still blames you? Where does she get the nerve?”“We all know she’s shameless.” I was too used to Cecilia’s nonsense to get upset. “Looks like Cameron alread

I rushed back to the Gordon family’s mansion, and the tension hit me as soon as I walked in.Mary was pacing around the living room. When she saw me, it was like she had found her savior. She hurried over. “Cassia, they’re in the study. Take this tea to Tyler and see if you can calm him down. I’ve never seen him this mad before. He slapped Zach twice as soon as he saw him. He wasn’t even this furious three years ago.”What happened three years ago did not come close to this. Cameron backing out of the partnership was a big deal. The project was good, but it was way too big for anyone to take on alone.Only a company as big as Cameron’s had the resources to handle something like this. A lot of other companies just could not do it.If Gordon Corporation tried to take it on alone, it would require a huge amount of money. Projects this size took years to finish, and the costs would keep piling up.I agreed, and Mrs. Zaffino quickly handed me the tea along with the tray. Mary squeezed

Once Tyler was done, the atmosphere in the study felt heavy and tense.Tyler said that in front of me as a warning and a threat to Zach.Zach kept quiet because he knew that Tyler could act on what he said.“And Zach, if you leave the Gordon family, Cecilia will leave you too, just like she did three years ago. Once you’re out of this family, you’ll have nothing.”After that, Tyler walked past me and said, “You should rest. This isn’t your problem.”With that, he left the study, so only Zach and I remained.Zach was standing in the corner, where the light did not reach.I could see that he felt defeated. Because of this incident, Tyler was questioning his relationship and his abilities. Those two things were important to a man.I did not know how to comfort him, and I did not really want to.Why should I care?I just hoped that he would not blame me for everything like Cecilia did. But if he did, there was nothing I could do about it.As I got up from my chair and headed fo

I nodded. “Okay, let’s go inside.”“I really don’t get what Cecilia’s thinking. She did something so dumb and still tried to talk to Mr. Quinlan’s daughter. Is that really going to help?” the driver mumbled.“Of course it’s not going to help. Cecilia knows that,” I replied. “She’s not trying to talk to Rachel. She wants Zach to see that she’s trying to make things right and that she’s willing to put aside her pride as an heiress for him.”“She can’t keep up her pride as an heiress for long.”He was right. Everyone knew that Wilson Corporation was struggling. When I entered Sophie’s house, Rachel was still awake. She sat on the bed and played with some building blocks. It was getting late, so Sophie complained, “She was about to sleep. My mom and I each told her six stories. I talked so much that my mouth got dry, and she started yawning. But then, Cecilia showed up and woke her up.”“It’s okay,” I said. “I’ll stay with her until she sleeps. You should go ahead and rest in your r

Cameron spoke quickly and softly, but I noticed a change in his tone. I could tell what he really meant.I had known Cameron for a long time. He loved Rachel, but he often had different women around him. Since we knew each other, he never showed any romantic interest in me.However, after what happened yesterday, he seemed a bit down. So, I figured he might be saying things without thinking clearly.I smiled and said, “Not right now. I’ll visit when I have time. Maybe early next month. I promise I won’t make any empty promises.”“You know that’s not what I meant.” His hand was still on my shoulder, and he looked straight at me. “It’s not just Rachel who can’t be apart from you. I feel the same way.”I was surprised, and it showed.“Don’t worry. I’ll keep what you said yesterday to myself. Sophie tried to bribe me with food last night, but I didn’t say a word.”He smiled and squeezed my shoulder. “In that case, make sure to come early next month. I’ll ask someone to get your ro

Sophie knocked on my door the next day around 7 a.m.I only managed to fall asleep at about 2 a.m., so I had a bad headache. I sat on the bed as she ran over excitedly and asked, “Are you busy this morning?” “Go away.” I lay down again. “Come to the city hall with me. I’m getting married!”“Why do you need me there? Am I going to breastfeed you?”“You don’t have milk right now.” I was disgusted by our conversation. Rachel sat up from the bed and asked, “Why are you going to the city hall?”“To get married.”“Shouldn’t you be going to a church for that? There’s supposed to be a priest with a bible that asks if you’re willing to marry this person next to you regardless of… something?”“That’s a religious wedding. Besides, it has to be lawful. What we’re doing today is the legal side of things.” Sophie carried Rachel up from the bed. “Do you want to be a witness to our marriage?” “Yay, sure!” Rachel immediately beamed and agreed. “I want to be the priest who holds the bibl

Cecilia had no shame at all. I would be speechless if this worked on Zach. After a while, she walked out dejectedly with her flowers. It seemed like she did not even manage to enter his office. She stood there in annoyance for a while before she suddenly looked over in my direction. I could see her, but she might not be able to see me. I was on a high floor, and the sun was blinding. Right then, Hailey gave me a call. I knew that she wanted to rant about Cecilia. Sure enough, Hailey started to complain, “Ms. Freeman, Cecilia is really shameless. I’ve never seen such a shameless woman. When Mr. Gordon was cut off from Gordon Corporation, she abandoned him immediately. Now that she knows he’s going to be Gordon Corporation’s acting CEO, she instantly starts visiting him again. I really can’t stand her.” “Hasn’t she always been like this?” I was unfazed. “Fortunately, Mr. Gordon is not willing to see her.” Hailey sounded relieved. “Do you really think he won’t see her fo

I looked at Austin’s pale face, and I was at a loss for words. His argument was reasonable, and I had no way to refute it. I was upset, but I could not cry. I felt a heavy feeling in my chest, and I found it hard to breathe. He looked at me and suddenly smiled. “Look at your face. Have I ever said that I liked Sophie? I don’t like girls like her. I prefer girls like you who are smart, beautiful, and decisive. Why don’t you marry me after you give birth to your babies?”I did not want to joke around with him. It was not funny. After that, Lucy exited the bridal shop and got into the backseat of the car. I stood in front of the bridal shop and watched as his car disappeared into the corner. “Cassia,” Sophie called out to me. I turned around. “What?”“Whose side are you on? I realize you’ve been extra nice to Austin recently. Have you forgotten that he’s a jerk?”“Watch your mouth.”I got into my car unhappily. “I’ll make a move first.”“Aren’t we having dinner together to

I knew that he was looking at the photos of him and Sophie in her wedding gown. Perhaps this would be the only time in his entire life that he could stand next to Sophie while she was dressed in a wedding gown. I felt the waterworks coming. When I tried to look for tissue papers in my bag, Zach called me. He sounded a bit excited. “Cassia, there’s this person overseas who has the same blood type as Austin. He has ALS, which is a fatal motor neuron disease. His family has already signed an organ donation form for him, and his condition recently worsened. He may pass in a month’s time, so I got in contact with them. His family has agreed to donate his heart to Austin.” “Really?” It was good news, and I almost leaped in joy. I glanced at Austin excitedly. He was staring intently at his phone, so he did not notice me. “Does Austin have to leave immediately?”“It’s still early. We can leave when the donor’s condition worsens.” I estimated the time. Zach said that it would ta

Sophie could easily start a fight wherever she went. I immediately went over and saw that Austin’s forehead had turned red. It seemed to be getting swollen. I kicked Sophie in anger. “Is there something wrong with you? What are you doing?” “Why did you kick me? Didn’t you hear what he just said?”Austin bent down and picked up Sophie’s phone for her. “Luckily, your phone screen isn’t cracked. It’s fine if my skull is cracked; it can heal.” Sophie took her phone, and it immediately unlocked due to face ID. Her wallpaper was a photo of Kingston and her. She had just changed the wallpaper yesterday. It used to be a photo of me and her. Austin was the one who had taken that photo. Even though Austin was not directly in the photo, it felt like it was a photo of the three of us. He must have noticed it. He smiled and said, “I’ll make a move. Tell Lucy I’ll be waiting for her in the car.” Austin walked out of the bridal shop, and Sophie looked dispirited. “I was quite happy, bu

“You’re getting married too?”“I’ll be your best man or maid of honor. What? You’re too cheap to pay for the outfits?”“You, my best man?”“Look around you. Are there any single people left?”Sophie rolled her eyes. “Hah, I wasn’t planning on inviting you.”Kingston tried to shake Austin’s hand, but Austin ignored him. Sophie got mad and pulled Kingston away. “Don’t pay attention to him. He thinks he’s too good for anyone. He’s crazy.”“Sophie,” I warned.“What? He’s always acting crazy!” she yelled.I was not sure if Austin really wanted to be Sophie’s best man, or if it was just an excuse to come here.Anyway, Austin went to change too. I could not tell the difference between the best man’s and groom’s outfits. However, the difference between the bridesmaid and bride was clear. While Sophie was posing in front of the mirror in her wedding dress, Austin came out of the fitting room.Austin was very thin, and the suit hung loosely on him, but it still looked good.He had a

Sophie’s wedding preparations were progressing quickly. She limped to work in the mornings and dragged me along in the afternoons to buy wedding stuff.I felt like the wedding was just an excuse for her to go shopping.“This afternoon, Kingston and I are trying on our wedding outfits. You should come too.”“It’s your wedding. Why should I come?”“To help me choose! I look good in everything, so it’s hard to pick.”“If it’s that hard, just buy them all. Aren’t you rich?”“Why are you so grouchy?” She leaned closer and observed me. “Cassia, are your hormones off balance?”“I’m pregnant, so everything’s a mess right now.”After some thought, I called Austin and told him, “Sophie’s trying on wedding dresses this afternoon.”“Okay,” he replied in his usual lifeless tone.“Aren’t you going to say anything to her?”“Don’t eat too much. The wedding dress will be a pain to alter.”I was so angry that I hung up. He was so stubborn. I was sure that he would regret it and cry later.M

Austin was the weakest among us when we were kids. He could not climb trees, run, or do anything physically demanding. Instead, he would play board games and puzzles with us.Sophie always thought that he was smart, and she admired him.I never imagined that someone I grew up with might die so soon.“You should leave,” he said weakly. “She should be done by now.”“Austin.” I wanted to say something more, but he turned his back to me.He did not want to listen, so I had no choice but to leave. As I reached the door, I heard him say, “Actually, this is a good thing.”Was he saying that Sophie marrying Kingston was a good thing? What was good about it?I felt like grabbing Sophie over. I wanted to point at the dying man in bed and say, “This guy loves you more than you know. He helped you test Kingston’s character. He thinks about you all the time. He comes to see you every night using his half-sister as an excuse, but he’s dying. He doesn’t want you to be sad, so he plans to die

“I just went for a checkup.” Austin walked over to me. “Why are you sweating so much?”He took a handkerchief out of his pocket and gave it to me. Honestly, only Austin would still carry a handkerchief in his condition.I wiped my sweat. “I came with Sophie to get her cast off, and I thought I’d stop by to see you.”“Get her cast off? I thought that wasn’t until next month?”“She insisted on getting it off today. The doctor checked, and her bone is healing well, so it’s fine for her to take it off.”“When did she start caring so much about her looks?” Austin walked back to his room, and I followed him.He sat down and seemed a little out of breath. I had already asked the doctor about him. Austin could not engage in any physical activity; he could not even walk fast.I was about to pour him some water, but he waved me off. “Don’t bother. I’m not thirsty. How could I let you take care of me? I might be a patient, but you’re pregnant.”At least, he could still joke. If I were him
