Chapter 121

Author: Hardy Banana
After a quick chat with Cameron about our partnership, we just needed Mr. Howard to come to West City and sign the contract.

Right then, Zach knocked on the door.

He smiled as he opened the door. “Mr. Quinlan, we can go now.”

“Go where?” I asked right away.

“To Cameron Hill,” Zach replied with a smile. “It might be a bumpy ride, so you might want to stay behind.”

“As far as I know, Yonder Trading isn’t involved in real estate development yet.”

He smiled mysteriously at me and walked out.

Cameron seemed really interested in that mountain. It was at a good location, and it had great landscape. Nonetheless, only a strong company would have the courage to take on this project.

I could not stop Cameron from going. He had asked me to watch Rachel.

She was too busy playing with her Lego to pay attention to him. Cameron gave his daughter a kiss and left.

That mountain had a lot of potential. If Cameron Hill was developed, the excavation, construction, and engineering companies worki

“Okay, let’s have some fun.”I had not visited the marine park in a long time, and it felt very different to come with a child.I held Rachel’s hand and ran ahead. It was a hot day, and Cecilia was slowly trailing behind with a sun umbrella.I should have known better than to bring her along. She was just slowing us down.Kids loved amusement parks. I took Rachel on the giant octopus ride and the spinning coffee cups, which almost made me throw up.Rachel was so happy that she laughed out loud. Most of the time, I found her to be too much like Cameron—too reserved and not very playful. However, she was just a happy child at this moment. After a while, Rachel said that she was thirsty. I had water for her, but she wanted something colorful. After some thought, I asked Cecilia to keep an eye on Rachel while I bought her some juice. When I got back to our resting spot with the juice, I could not find Cecilia or Rachel anywhere.I figured that they must have gone to the restroom.

I acted fast and gave it my all.I slapped Cecilia so hard that she spun around and fell onto the couch. She was stunned. If I had not been tired and scared from the search earlier, I would have slapped her even harder. It was strange how things would always happen. Every time I got angry and acted out, Zach would catch me at my worst. This time was no different. He and Cameron walked into the medical station just in time to see me slapping the “helpless” Cecilia. One slap and I practically had her flying and landing on the couch. Her hair was all over her face.“Cassia!” Zach rushed over and pulled me back. I snapped. “Let me go, or else, I’ll hit you too!”He did not have time for me and went to check on his precious Cecilia. She was too stunned to move. I stood there and snorted. “One slap shouldn’t have knocked her out like that.”Cameron picked Rachel up, who softly explained what happened. “Cassia went to get some juice for me and told me to wait for her, but she…” R

After that scare, I was really hungry. While Cameron and Rachel were playing, I bought a bunch of snacks. I ate as I watched them have fun. When they came back, I gave Rachel some fries and pizza. It was her first time trying them.“They’re delicious.” Seeing her bright eyes made me kiss her cheek.I noticed Cameron looking at me with even more interest. I touched my mouth and asked, “Do I have chip crumbs on my lips?”He chuckled. “No, but you have some mayonnaise there.” He wiped it off with a tissue. “I’ve never seen you so fierce before.”He was talking about the time I slapped Cecilia. If she had done something worse, I would have really hurt her.“You and Zach…” Cameron hesitated. He felt a bit awkward asking about our private matters.“Hmm?”“You two don’t seem as close as you did when you visited Spain the last time.”Even Cameron could tell. I did not want to hide it anymore. After I swallowed the pizza, I said, “Zach and I are divorced.”Cameron looked surprised. “

Zach had returned.I knew that he was there for Cameron, not me.He was worried that I might take Cameron and Rachel somewhere else. He had not settled his partnership with Cameron after all.He said that Cameron was a businessman, but he was one too.I stayed put as Zach walked toward me under the bright fireworks. It reminded me of our wedding day. He had walked toward me under bright fireworks too. Everything he said that day was a lie.I could not even remember his exact words. It was almost like I had chosen to forget them. Perhaps that was better since they were just lies. Why should I remember them? When he reached me, I looked up and asked, “Is Cecilia dead?”He just stared at me as the fireworks were reflected in his eyes. They turned his eyes red and green. He did not answer, but the colors in his eyes were almost overwhelming. On a night like this, violence felt like the right choice.“While Cameron isn’t watching, you still have a chance to avenge her,” I sai

Some men loved to show off their charm all the time. When Lance smiled, he was definitely attractive.Too bad he was interested in the wrong person. As Sophie kneaded the dough, she glanced at him and said, “Don’t waste your efforts. You’re not Cassia’s type. Her heart is with someone else.”“What about you?” Lance smiled as he took a sip of his wine. I had to admit that handsome men looked good even when they were drinking.Sophie slammed the dough on the counter, which made a loud noise. “You’re imagining things.”He really was imagining things. I pulled Lance out of the kitchen and said, “Sophie doesn’t like people bothering her while she’s making desserts.”“Aren’t you around?”“I’m different. We’ve been together since we were born.” I did not want to talk to him anymore, so I looked for Austin.I searched the whole house and finally found the birthday boy in his room. He was lounging in his chair and staring blankly at the garden outside. It was as if the noise from th

I was struggling to find the right words. “I know, but—”“Don’t say ‘but.’” Sophie cut me off.I stared at her in fear.I could not fathom why Austin would do that, but I was not curious to know. I was worried about how Sophie felt. I knew friendships between girls could be fragile.Well, it was not just girls; it was the same with guys. They might seem close, but as soon as a girl got involved, even the strongest friendships could be affected.“S-Sophie…” I stammered.Suddenly, Sophie pushed the tray into my arms and squeezed my arm excitedly. “If Austin kissed you, does that mean he likes girls and not guys?”“Huh?” I was confused. She jumped up in excitement. “That’s awesome!”“Awesome…?” I watched her rush inside and crouch in front of Austin. “Hey, you kissed Cassia. Are you going to kiss me too?”My heart raced, probably more than Sophie’s. I hoped that he would treat us fairly and kiss Sophie too. However, he did not move even after we waited for a long time. Soph

Austin was taken to the emergency room, and we had to wait outside the door. His parents were both out of the country. To be more precise, it was his dad and stepmom. His mom died from depression soon after he was born. I heard that she felt guilty about his heart condition and eventually passed away.Later, Austin’s dad remarried. His stepmom was okay but not very caring since she was not his real mother. We were the only family Austin had.Sophie held me tightly and rested her head on my chest. “Cassia, I’m so scared.”I gently patted her back to comfort her, but I did not know what to say.“I hope he lives. It’s okay if he doesn’t like me or girls. All I want is for him to be okay.” she whispered.I felt sad and wanted to cry, but I could not.Lance looked confused. He did not know that Austin was sick.“He didn’t want to tell you, so just pretend that you don’t know,” I said.Austin had been through a lot. He had several stents in his heart. Sometimes, we would joke tha

Zach sat down next to us and tried to reassure us, “Even though this came out of nowhere, the surgery isn’t too complicated. They only need to remove the collapsed stent and put in a new one.”“The doctor said that a transplant would be better,” Sophie muttered while she leaned on my shoulder. Then, she suddenly looked up at me and asked, “Do you think I could give him half of my heart?”“Are you serious?” Of course, she knew that was not possible. She was just really anxious. But if it were an option, Sophie would probably do it.My stomach growled loudly. I had not eaten all night, and with everything going on, I was starving.Even though I was not focusing on my hunger, my body could not take it anymore.I had even googled if pregnant women got hungry this early. The answers were all over the place and not very helpful. However, I was extremely hungry. I told them that I would go downstairs to grab some food and get Sophie a coffee.Zach insisted on coming with me. We walked

Sophie knocked on my door the next day around 7 a.m.I only managed to fall asleep at about 2 a.m., so I had a bad headache. I sat on the bed as she ran over excitedly and asked, “Are you busy this morning?” “Go away.” I lay down again. “Come to the city hall with me. I’m getting married!”“Why do you need me there? Am I going to breastfeed you?”“You don’t have milk right now.” I was disgusted by our conversation. Rachel sat up from the bed and asked, “Why are you going to the city hall?”“To get married.”“Shouldn’t you be going to a church for that? There’s supposed to be a priest with a bible that asks if you’re willing to marry this person next to you regardless of… something?”“That’s a religious wedding. Besides, it has to be lawful. What we’re doing today is the legal side of things.” Sophie carried Rachel up from the bed. “Do you want to be a witness to our marriage?” “Yay, sure!” Rachel immediately beamed and agreed. “I want to be the priest who holds the bibl

Cecilia had no shame at all. I would be speechless if this worked on Zach. After a while, she walked out dejectedly with her flowers. It seemed like she did not even manage to enter his office. She stood there in annoyance for a while before she suddenly looked over in my direction. I could see her, but she might not be able to see me. I was on a high floor, and the sun was blinding. Right then, Hailey gave me a call. I knew that she wanted to rant about Cecilia. Sure enough, Hailey started to complain, “Ms. Freeman, Cecilia is really shameless. I’ve never seen such a shameless woman. When Mr. Gordon was cut off from Gordon Corporation, she abandoned him immediately. Now that she knows he’s going to be Gordon Corporation’s acting CEO, she instantly starts visiting him again. I really can’t stand her.” “Hasn’t she always been like this?” I was unfazed. “Fortunately, Mr. Gordon is not willing to see her.” Hailey sounded relieved. “Do you really think he won’t see her fo

I looked at Austin’s pale face, and I was at a loss for words. His argument was reasonable, and I had no way to refute it. I was upset, but I could not cry. I felt a heavy feeling in my chest, and I found it hard to breathe. He looked at me and suddenly smiled. “Look at your face. Have I ever said that I liked Sophie? I don’t like girls like her. I prefer girls like you who are smart, beautiful, and decisive. Why don’t you marry me after you give birth to your babies?”I did not want to joke around with him. It was not funny. After that, Lucy exited the bridal shop and got into the backseat of the car. I stood in front of the bridal shop and watched as his car disappeared into the corner. “Cassia,” Sophie called out to me. I turned around. “What?”“Whose side are you on? I realize you’ve been extra nice to Austin recently. Have you forgotten that he’s a jerk?”“Watch your mouth.”I got into my car unhappily. “I’ll make a move first.”“Aren’t we having dinner together to

I knew that he was looking at the photos of him and Sophie in her wedding gown. Perhaps this would be the only time in his entire life that he could stand next to Sophie while she was dressed in a wedding gown. I felt the waterworks coming. When I tried to look for tissue papers in my bag, Zach called me. He sounded a bit excited. “Cassia, there’s this person overseas who has the same blood type as Austin. He has ALS, which is a fatal motor neuron disease. His family has already signed an organ donation form for him, and his condition recently worsened. He may pass in a month’s time, so I got in contact with them. His family has agreed to donate his heart to Austin.” “Really?” It was good news, and I almost leaped in joy. I glanced at Austin excitedly. He was staring intently at his phone, so he did not notice me. “Does Austin have to leave immediately?”“It’s still early. We can leave when the donor’s condition worsens.” I estimated the time. Zach said that it would ta

Sophie could easily start a fight wherever she went. I immediately went over and saw that Austin’s forehead had turned red. It seemed to be getting swollen. I kicked Sophie in anger. “Is there something wrong with you? What are you doing?” “Why did you kick me? Didn’t you hear what he just said?”Austin bent down and picked up Sophie’s phone for her. “Luckily, your phone screen isn’t cracked. It’s fine if my skull is cracked; it can heal.” Sophie took her phone, and it immediately unlocked due to face ID. Her wallpaper was a photo of Kingston and her. She had just changed the wallpaper yesterday. It used to be a photo of me and her. Austin was the one who had taken that photo. Even though Austin was not directly in the photo, it felt like it was a photo of the three of us. He must have noticed it. He smiled and said, “I’ll make a move. Tell Lucy I’ll be waiting for her in the car.” Austin walked out of the bridal shop, and Sophie looked dispirited. “I was quite happy, bu

“You’re getting married too?”“I’ll be your best man or maid of honor. What? You’re too cheap to pay for the outfits?”“You, my best man?”“Look around you. Are there any single people left?”Sophie rolled her eyes. “Hah, I wasn’t planning on inviting you.”Kingston tried to shake Austin’s hand, but Austin ignored him. Sophie got mad and pulled Kingston away. “Don’t pay attention to him. He thinks he’s too good for anyone. He’s crazy.”“Sophie,” I warned.“What? He’s always acting crazy!” she yelled.I was not sure if Austin really wanted to be Sophie’s best man, or if it was just an excuse to come here.Anyway, Austin went to change too. I could not tell the difference between the best man’s and groom’s outfits. However, the difference between the bridesmaid and bride was clear. While Sophie was posing in front of the mirror in her wedding dress, Austin came out of the fitting room.Austin was very thin, and the suit hung loosely on him, but it still looked good.He had a

Sophie’s wedding preparations were progressing quickly. She limped to work in the mornings and dragged me along in the afternoons to buy wedding stuff.I felt like the wedding was just an excuse for her to go shopping.“This afternoon, Kingston and I are trying on our wedding outfits. You should come too.”“It’s your wedding. Why should I come?”“To help me choose! I look good in everything, so it’s hard to pick.”“If it’s that hard, just buy them all. Aren’t you rich?”“Why are you so grouchy?” She leaned closer and observed me. “Cassia, are your hormones off balance?”“I’m pregnant, so everything’s a mess right now.”After some thought, I called Austin and told him, “Sophie’s trying on wedding dresses this afternoon.”“Okay,” he replied in his usual lifeless tone.“Aren’t you going to say anything to her?”“Don’t eat too much. The wedding dress will be a pain to alter.”I was so angry that I hung up. He was so stubborn. I was sure that he would regret it and cry later.M

Austin was the weakest among us when we were kids. He could not climb trees, run, or do anything physically demanding. Instead, he would play board games and puzzles with us.Sophie always thought that he was smart, and she admired him.I never imagined that someone I grew up with might die so soon.“You should leave,” he said weakly. “She should be done by now.”“Austin.” I wanted to say something more, but he turned his back to me.He did not want to listen, so I had no choice but to leave. As I reached the door, I heard him say, “Actually, this is a good thing.”Was he saying that Sophie marrying Kingston was a good thing? What was good about it?I felt like grabbing Sophie over. I wanted to point at the dying man in bed and say, “This guy loves you more than you know. He helped you test Kingston’s character. He thinks about you all the time. He comes to see you every night using his half-sister as an excuse, but he’s dying. He doesn’t want you to be sad, so he plans to die

“I just went for a checkup.” Austin walked over to me. “Why are you sweating so much?”He took a handkerchief out of his pocket and gave it to me. Honestly, only Austin would still carry a handkerchief in his condition.I wiped my sweat. “I came with Sophie to get her cast off, and I thought I’d stop by to see you.”“Get her cast off? I thought that wasn’t until next month?”“She insisted on getting it off today. The doctor checked, and her bone is healing well, so it’s fine for her to take it off.”“When did she start caring so much about her looks?” Austin walked back to his room, and I followed him.He sat down and seemed a little out of breath. I had already asked the doctor about him. Austin could not engage in any physical activity; he could not even walk fast.I was about to pour him some water, but he waved me off. “Don’t bother. I’m not thirsty. How could I let you take care of me? I might be a patient, but you’re pregnant.”At least, he could still joke. If I were him
