Isabella's POV.

I walked toward Mom, trying to keep my expression neutral.

“Surprise!” she said brightly, her arms outstretched. I forced a small smile and let her hug me tightly. Inside, however, my emotions were in turmoil.

“Happy birthday, sweetheart,” Mom added, her voice warm and full of affection.

“Thank you,” I murmured softly, keeping my tone steady.

I could feel Ezekiel’s gaze on me like a weight, but I didn’t dare meet his eyes. I wasn’t sure if I’d find guilt or resolve myself there—and I wasn’t ready to confront him either.

As Mom pulled away from the hug, she cupped my face in her hands. “How could I be far from you, love? It’s your birthday. I had to come back, no matter what,” she said, her tone brimming with love.

I nodded, forcing myself to match her enthusiasm.

“You should take a rest, Mom,” I said, stepping aside slightly, trying to regain some control of the situation.

“Mr. Ezekiel and I will cook something for you.”

I took a deep breath and forced myself to stay composed.“Oh!” I exclaimed with a light laugh, masking the turmoil within.“I didn’t notice.”Ezekiel’s gaze didn’t waver, but I brushed it off, continuing in an even tone, “I thought you and Mom were spending some quality time together, so I figured I’d keep myself busy until you two came back.”I turned to face him fully, folding my arms across my chest. My eyes deliberately traveled to his lips, which still carried a faint redness.“Wow,” I said, raising an eyebrow. “It seems your lips love being red.” My tone was teasing, but deep down, the sight of those lips made my chest ache.Ezekiel’s jaw tightened slightly, and his brows furrowed.“Isabella,” he started, his voice softer now.“What?” I interrupted lightly, forcing a smile.I turned back to the counter, picking up a piece of the apple I’d sliced.“Don’t you have anything to say?” Ezekiel’s voice was firm, almost demanding, pulling me out of my thoughts.I glanced at him, feignin

We sat at the dining table for breakfast, the tension thick enough to slice with a knife. Mom took a spoonful of the fruit custard and hummed in delight, her voice dripping with satisfaction.“Umm... I’ve missed your delicious cooking, honey,” she said, directing a smile toward Ezekiel. He didn’t respond. His gaze, however, lingered on me.I smiled faintly at him, trying to mask the storm brewing inside me, but his face remained stern. Feeling the weight of his gaze, I deliberately shifted my attention to Mom and asked, “So, how was your trip, Mom?”The question hit its mark. Mom froze, her spoon hovering midair, as though she hadn’t expected me to bring it up. I could see the discomfort flash across her face.“I—Isabella!” she snapped, her tone sharp and defensive. “I didn’t go on a trip.”She recovered quickly, but her annoyance betrayed her. “I’ve had tons of work to handle. You know that.”I let out a soft laugh, playing it off casually. “Mom, I was just asking. Why are you so

It was around 8 o'clock, and Ezekiel still hadn’t returned home. I couldn’t focus anymore. Closing the book, I glanced at the main door, hoping to hear the sound of it opening.Mom was in her room, and my frustration gnawed at me. With a heavy sigh, I placed the novel on the table and decided to check on her.I climbed the stairs and approached her room. The door was ajar, and I pushed it open gently. She was sitting on the bed, wearing her glasses and holding a book in her hand. Her posture was calm, too calm, as if she didn’t have a care in the world.Hearing the creak of the door, Mom looked up from the book.“Isabella!”I leaned against the door-frame, crossing my arms. “What are you doing?”She raised her brows briefly before returning her gaze to the book. “Just spending my time,” she replied, her tone indifferent.A deep sigh escaped my lips. “Your boyfriend hasn’t returned. Can’t you see?” I asked, my words laced with an edge I couldn’t hide.Still looking at the book, she ans

We sat together at the dinner table, and though I wore a mask of calmness, my insides churned with turmoil. Every smile, every word they exchanged, felt like a needle pricking my skin.In the middle of our meal, Mom suddenly broke the silence. “Honey! Try this,” she said cheerfully, offering Ezekiel some salad.I glanced at him, expecting him to dismiss her. Instead, he smiled. He actually smiled.I narrowed my eyes but quickly looked down at my plate. I didn’t want to react, didn’t want to let them see how much it bothered me.“You try it too, Kathrine,” Ezekiel said, his tone softer than I’d expected. He served her a portion of the salad, and she laughed lightly, accepting it with a playful nudge.I was stunned. Ezekiel had been angry with her, distant even, and now this? How could he suddenly treat her as if nothing had happened?I poked at my food, gripping the spoon so tightly that my knuckles turned white. They started chatting—casual, light, their words and laughter filling the

The next morning, I was standing outside by the car, leaning against it, waiting. For once, I’d gotten ready before Ezekiel. The air was brisk, and the quiet gave me time to think—or maybe overthink. Ezekiel and Mom would probably come out together. The thought gnawed at me, but I shook it off. When I finally saw them step outside—together—I couldn’t help but roll my eyes. Of course.Mom noticed me first and came forward with a smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes. "Isabella, how are you feeling now?" she asked in a sugary tone.I took a slow, deep breath, trying not to let my annoyance show. The irony wasn’t lost on me. Last night, she hadn’t bothered to check on me, not even once. Yet here she was, playing the concerned mother."Thank you for your kindness in asking," I said, my voice dripping with sarcasm. "I’m okay now."Her expression hardened immediately, her narrowed eyes slicing through me. "Watch your tone, Isabella," she snapped. "Day by day, you become more impudent."

Ezekiel kept his gaze on the road, gripping the wheel tightly. "Kathrine, you’re overreacting," he said, his voice steady but firm. "I didn’t say anything to hurt your ego."Kathrine turned to him, her expression tense, as she unlocked the door. "Ezekiel," she began, her voice clipped, "just go to work. I’m not in the mood to discuss this."She stepped one foot out of the car, pausing only to add, "Isabella always makes my life hard. This isn’t new to me. You don’t know her the way I do."Ezekiel arched his brow but didn’t respond. He knew pushing her further wouldn’t get them anywhere. He stayed silent, watching as she got out of the car and slammed the door shut with a thud.He tightened his lips, his frustration mounting, but he didn’t try to stop her. Instead, he sat there, his hands gripping the steering wheel, watching her through the rear-view mirror.Kathrine stood on the sidewalk, pulling out her phone and making a call. Ezekiel's POV.I leaned against my car, arms crossed, eyes scanning the steady stream of students spilling out of the college. Isabella usually came out early, always easy to spot in the crowd. But today, there was no sign of her.Minutes passed, and my patience thinned. Where was she?Frowning, I pushed myself out of the car and started walking toward her department. The late afternoon sun cast long shadows on the courtyard as I made my way through the halls. When I reached her classroom, it was empty.I stepped inside, looking around, but there was no trace of Isabella.I narrowed my eyes, my thoughts racing. Where could she have gone?Pulling my phone from my pocket, I dialed her number. The line rang, but there was no answer.I tapped my fingers impatiently on the phone’s edge and called again. The same result."Where is she?" I muttered under my breath, pacing the empty hallway. My unease was growing with each passing second. It was getting close to evening now, the sky shifting

The music pulsed through my body as I moved to the beat, but my mind was elsewhere. It wasn’t just the rhythm carrying me; it was the storm inside me. My mom’s harsh words replayed over and over, and Ezekiel’s face kept coming to my thoughts.I wished I could scream it all out—tell my mother everything about what her boyfriend and I had done. Watch her flawless composure crack. But I couldn’t.I smiled while thinking.I opened my eyes and blinked, trying to ground myself, but something was wrong. The room wasn’t steady anymore—it was tilting. No, not just the room. Everyone around me seemed to sway, their movements exaggerated, surreal.No. It was me. I was tilting.I stumbled slightly, my legs feeling heavy, and my head spun as the edges of my vision blurred. My abdomen clenched suddenly, sharp.A bitter taste rose in my throat, and I felt panic surge. My eyes snapped at Dimitri, who was still moving to the beat.“Isabella?” he leaned closer.I opened my mouth to speak, but the words

"Dimitri, you are not in my place, so you won’t understand what I’ve been through," I finally spoke, my voice firm yet weary. He remained silent, listening."Ezekiel and I… our relationship happened unexpectedly. Neither of us saw it coming," I admitted. "But there’s something deeper—something tied to my family. That’s why I couldn’t speak about it openly."Dimitri arched a brow, his curiosity piqued.I offered a small, bitter smile. "At least you asked about it. That’s more than I can say for others."He sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. "I had a feeling something was going on between you two. Especially that night—the way Professor Ezekiel stepped in to protect you.""But I took it lightly," he admitted. There was a pause before he added, "Isabella, I’m not here to judge you. But you need to understand… you're going to face a lot. People won’t be kind."I crossed my arms. "I know."The tension in the room was thick, but before either of us could say more, the noise from outside

Dad parked the car beside the university. As soon as I looked outside, my heart started pounding—media reporters crowded the entrance, cameras flashing, microphones ready.I swallowed hard. I knew they weren’t just here for Ezekiel. They wanted answers about my mom too.Dad exhaled sharply, gripping the steering wheel. “See what you’ve done?” he muttered.I pressed my lips together, holding back my frustration."Dad, I know what I’ve done, but can you please stop reminding me every single time?" I finally said.He shot me a look, then turned his gaze toward the street."You can’t even handle my words. What will you do when you face your classmates?" he asked coldly. "I told you not to come, but you’re too stubborn to listen."I remained silent. There was no point in arguing with him now.Dad honked the horn, trying to clear a path through the crowd. After a few minutes of struggling, he finally managed to drive through the university gates. The moment the car stopped, I wasted no time

"Isabella, you don’t know my dad," Ezekiel said with a deep breath, his voice heavy with something I couldn’t quite place.I sighed, unsure of what to say. I didn’t know what had happened between them, but at least his father had managed to get him out of prison. That was something.I placed a gentle hand on his shoulder, looking at him with empathy. "Okay, we’ll talk about it later."I lightly pushed him toward the bed and said, "Just sit here.""I’ll bring you some food. You haven’t eaten anything, have you?"Ezekiel shook his head, his voice softer now. "I don’t want to eat anything. I just need to sleep in your arms, Isabella." He pulled my hand gently, his grip pleading.I patted his hand reassuringly. "I know what you're going through, Ezekiel. But I believe in you. The truth will come out. The real culprit will be caught soon."He closed his eyes, a heavy silence filled the room for a moment. I could feel the weight of his thoughts, the turmoil inside him. Then, he spoke again,

I just wanted to know the truth. No matter what my dad said, I refused to believe Ezekiel was responsible. Deep down, I felt that whatever had happened was a consequence of my mother’s own actions.Maybe she had gotten involved with the wrong person. Maybe she had made mistakes she couldn’t undo. And in the end, she found herself with no way out.I sighed, lost in thought, trying to piece everything together. But Dad’s voice cut through my thoughts. "Isabella, you’re not listening to me."I looked up at him."What if it turns out to be Ezekiel?" he pressed.I exhaled sharply, frustrated. "Oh, come on, Dad. I know him. He couldn’t have done this. In fact, he told Mom about us. If he had anything to hide, why would he do that?"Dad narrowed his eyes but remained silent."Besides," I continued, "Mom was the one who messed up his finances. She took money from his company. She leaked shares. If anything, she had more enemies than just Ezekiel."Dad’s jaw tightened. His expression darkened

Ezekiel was finally released from custody, thanks to the bail his lawyer had secured. However, his expression remained tense as he stepped into the sheriff's office. As he entered, his sharp eyes immediately caught sight of a man sitting with his back to him."Come in, Mr. Ezekiel," Oliver said, motioning him inside.Ezekiel didn’t move at first. He had already guessed who the man was.Slowly, he stepped forward, standing just behind him. "I didn’t think I’d be granted bail tonight," he murmured.Oliver gave a small smirk. "Your father made sure of it. We also ran a thorough check to see if you had any hidden links or evidence against you."The moment Oliver mentioned his father, Ezekiel’s jaw tightened. At that instant, the man in front of him finally turned around.Nathan Carter—the CEO of a multinational corporation, a powerful and influential man, and most importantly, Ezekiel’s father—met his gaze with a neutral expression.Ezekiel sighed, his emotions unreadable.Nathan looked a

Dad straightened his posture, his expression firm. "Officer, Kathrine and I were still friends. There was no reason for her to hesitate if she wanted to speak to me privately."The officer studied him before nodding. "I see. But if you were that close, then why did you file for divorce? Was there a specific reason?"Dad's face stiffened. His jaw clenched slightly, and after a brief pause, he let out a slow breath. "I… I had a girlfriend. And, honestly, I didn’t want to be with Kathrine anymore."The officer raised an eyebrow but didn’t comment on the revelation. Instead, he jotted something down in his notepad before saying, "Alright, Mr. Robert. We’ll gather all the necessary information on Mrs. Kathrine, and soon, we should be able to locate her body."Dad nodded slowly, his face unreadable. Then, the officer turned toward me, his expression more neutral. "You got involved with your mom's boyfriend?" the officer asked, his tone laced with disbelief.I lowered my gaze, feeling a wave of shame wash over me. "Yes," I admitted softly. The officer let out a sigh, disappointment evident in his expression.I pressed my lips together, unsure why embarrassment was creeping over me. I had already come this far—why did his reaction make me feel so exposed? After a brief silence, he asked again, "Can you tell me how it happened? And your mother… how did she find out? What was her reaction?"I lifted my gaze to meet his. If I had to recount my mother’s reaction, I was sure his expression would shift. It was time to reveal everything.Everything meant everything. The truth about my mother’s real nature. And if I told them the whole story, maybe—just maybe—it would work in Ezekiel’s favor.Taking a deep breath, I began. The police kept Ezekiel in an interrogation room. They didn’t put him in custody—he was a respected man, after all. But he was still trapped, sitting alone with nothing but his thoughts. His phone had been confiscated, leaving him with no way to reach out. After what felt like an eternity, the door creaked open. Ezekiel let out a sigh but didn’t bother to look up.“Hello, Mr. Ezekiel,” a familiar voice greeted.Recognizing the voice, Ezekiel finally glanced up and saw Oliver, the officer handling the case.“Can I get my phone back?” Ezekiel asked, his tone calm but edged with frustration.Oliver slid the phone across the table.“Yes,” he said simply.Ezekiel grabbed it, his fingers tightening around the device.“Did you find anything on it?”Oliver exhaled slowly.“No. But, Mr. Ezekiel, that won’t change anything.”Ezekiel narrowed his eyes.“What do you mean?”Oliver leaned forward. “Mr. Robert has strong evidence against you.
