It was a month later when Tank, Jack, Elio and Marlo arrived on our doorstep. Felix and I had several business interests and we had roped Tank in to do the digging for us. We didn’t expect him to bring the information himself although having them all there was great.

“That’s a lot of suitcases,” I said as Felix and I got off the boat and numerous hugs were exchanged.

“We sold the house,” Jack said.

“In Oklahoma City?” I asked.

“You said one cabin was empty, it’s ours now,” Tank said after crushing my ribs.

“Just like that?” Felix asked him.

“Just like that,” Jack said with a hand on his hip.

“Welcome to Florida then,” Felix said with a chuckle.

“Marlo, as beautiful as ever,” I said as I picked her up in a hug and kissed her cheek.

“If you weren’t practically my brother Ryder, I swear …”

“You’ll what Elio?” I asked him.

“Never mind, how is the magnificent Megan doing?” Elio asked.

“She’s great, we’re all great,” I said.

“Come on, they’re all waiting back on the island,” Felix said as h

Two weeks later Marlo gave birth to a girl, Eloise Sherwood. She was an exact miniature replica of Marlo, minus the blue hair. We spent the morning after her birth with them as we helped Elio to assemble the crib and Megan, Ava and Rylee had gone on a massive shopping spree for the baby.“She’s beautiful Marlo,” I said as I held Eloise in my arms.“She’s perfect,” Elio said as he kissed the top of Marlo’s head.“Better buy that shotgun,” Lucas joked as he joined us with a cup of coffee in his hands.“Don’t you worry Lucas, I’ll sever the heads of anyone thinking of even looking at her,” Elio said.“She’s got enough people that’ll teach her how to look after herself,” Jack said as Tank held his arms out for her.“Nobody will ever hurt you precious angel,” Tank said in a surprisingly soft voice.Later that afternoon we took the boat back to the island and settled down for the day. Lucas was on his phone as he started walking the perimeter of the island. Megan and Rylee got started on di

“As discussed at our last informal meeting I’d like to introduce to you exiled Sire Ryder Grey,” Peyton said.“Thank you Peyton,” I said and looked at the group of people in front of me.“I can’t be your Sire here or officially claim this as my territory, but I can be your Chief,” I said.“It doesn’t matter what you’re called, as long as we can unify all of us,” Peyton said and a few men also nodded their heads.“You all make up your own clans, vampires, wolves and dragonkin. Clans that bind together is a tribe, the leader of a tribe is a chief. I’ve had numerous discussions about what you all want and I’ll do this on one condition only,” I said.“Which is?” another man asked.“To my left is Tank, he’s a born Alpha wolf. To my right is Felix, born with master’s blood. They will head up the wolf and vampire clan individually and I’ll head up the dragonkin clan and together we will be the Grey Tribe,” I said.“What makes them qualified to be our leaders?” a woman asked.“Felix and I tra

Three months later …“Grey.” I answered the ringing phone. It was four am and I was so tired I could barely open my eyes.“Ava’s gone into labour, we’re in the waiting room,” Elio said.“She’s got shit timing, we’re on our way,” I said wide awake now.“What’s going on?” Megan asked me as I switched the lamp on.“Ava’s having the baby,” I said.“Can’t I just stay here?” she asked me.“And how would that look to the rest of the tribe?” I asked her already pulling jeans on.“I hate your tribe,” she said as she got out of bed.“No you don’t, you love them all,” I said with a smile.“I hate you,” she said and I laughed.“Get over it because I love you,” I said as she reached the cupboard.“I’ll get over it when I can see my feet again,” she said as she pulled on tights and one of my t-shirts.An hour later I parked the truck in front of our clinic that was run by our own people. It was open to humans as well and cheaper than the private hospital. I had to bite my tongue at how slow Megan m

“What exactly do they want you to do for them?” Lucas asked me.“To be their hunter,” I answered him.“You are a good hunter,” he said.“I used to be a good hunter,” I said.“You once told me you were born to kill,” he countered.“And you once told me I was trained to kill,” I said and he started laughing.“What are their terms?” he asked me.“I’m not sure,” I said.“Arrange another meeting, find out, being out of exile will make things a lot easier for a lot of people,” Lucas said.“I know.”“It’s your choice Ryder, but also keep in mind the doors it could open for Wynter one day,” he said.“What doors? No doors were opened for me,” I said.“You became Sire of Princeton. You went to the Unit, none of that would’ve been possible if I had been in exile,” Lucas said.“Fine, I’ll think about it,” I said.“Call me when you grow a pair,” Lucas said and ended the call as my mouth gaped open.“Why do we love him again?” Abeloth asked.“Not a clue,” I said with a smile.“We should do it,” Abe

“I say we just grab him,” Felix said.We were on the roof of an apartment building behind a row of houses as we surveyed the house in front of us. The man living in the house was named Oliver Carnegie and he was an exiled dragon. His house was on a quiet residential street along with all the other nice houses. His children went to school and played in the street with all the other children of the neighbourhood. His wife was a stay at home mom and kissed him goodbye on the porch every morning as he left for work. What she didn’t know was that Oliver Carnegie had secret dealings with some very unsavoury characters. This was our tenth assignment for the Elders and thus far we had taken out exiled members straying from our laws. He had a small travel agency on a busy street where everyone knew everyone and people waved and smiled at each other. In the back of this travel agency, he had illegal immigrants packing cocaine and runners from different street gangs that sold it. The Elders were

At seven pm I drove the van to the corner of the street where Oliver had his travel agency. I gave it ten minutes and then started the van. The glass door opened and I saw Felix step out followed closely by Oliver. They talked as Oliver locked the front door and I sped up as they reached the curb. Felix was hardly visible as he slid the van’s door open and pushed Oliver inside. I sped away from the curb the moment Felix slammed the door shut.“What the hell are you doing?” Oliver yelled.“Time for a quick chat,” Felix said and punched him so hard in the face that I heard his cheekbone shatter.I pulled the van into an empty warehouse Cameron had said we could use and closed the roller door. The warehouse had recently been bought by Cameron’s biggest enemy and we intended to leave him a little present.Felix had pulled Oliver from the van and we tied him to a chair as he remained unconscious. I squirted water from a bottle into his face and he gingerly opened his eyes and looked around

It was a week later and Felix and I sat on chairs with our fishing rods in the lake. I finished my beer and opened another one as I leaned back in my chair. It was a nice day out, Wynter and Milo were playing on the grass.“Megan really said that?” Felix asked me.“Yeah, she said they sit on the porch and check him out whenever he’s not wearing a shirt,” I said.“There’s only one thing we can do,” Felix said as he looked at me.“We have to kill Max,” I said with a laugh.“We have to get this girl to fall in love with him,” he said.“Oh, yeah,” I said as Felix laughed.“Why would we kill him?” he asked.“Your wife’s checking out another man whenever we’re not around,” I said.“So’s yours,” he said.“Hence the killing,” I said.“He’s still a kid,” he said.“He’s not that much younger than we are,” I said.“Barely married two years and already they want younger men,” Felix said.“We need to step up our game,” I said as Felix shook his head.“So what do we know about this human girl?” Fel

The King had sent his private jet to fly me to France. It was almost an eleven hour flight and I sat wondering what the King could possibly want from me. Apart from the invitation was a detailed itinerary of what to wear, when to be at the airport and when I would arrive at the King’s chateau. When I stepped off the jet a black SUV with dark tinted windows were waiting for me. The front door opened and a man stepped out, dressed identically to Archibald, and opened the rear door for me. He bowed his head slightly as I climbed in and almost immediately the driver sped away from the jet.“Mr Grey, upon your arrival at the chateau, you will be shown to your quarters to freshen up. The King will receive you in his personal office for refreshments and your official meeting. Tonight the King hosts a ball in honour of the crown prince’s seventeenth birthday,” the man next to the driver said.“I guess I better brush up on my etiquette,” I said with a smile as the driver glanced at me in the r

The door of my bedroom opened after two knocks and a young girl with a shy smile peeked inside the room. She looked down when I turned around where I’d been standing in front of the windows and she reminded me of Ally, innocent, with an aura of hidden magic.“There are clothes of your size in the cupboard Sir. Mr. Reese has asked that you freshen up and he will escort you to meet with the King in half an hour,” she said with her head still lowered.“Thank you, I’ll be ready,” I said and she smiled again and closed the door. The suit in the cupboard fit me perfectly and I looked at myself in the mirror. Abeloth was strangely quiet, he wanted us to fight our way out, die a warrior’s death if it came to that. It was the first time in our lives that we disagreed about something so important.“We can take them,” he had hissed on the plane.“No more bloodshed Abeloth,” I said and blocked him off.Another knock came at the door and Mr Reese, I presumed, opened the door and nodded. We had left Aurora two days later and driven back to Hartwell. We arrived late at night but Mary-Joe had cooked for us and she and Simon had waited up. Their were hugs and some tears, especially from Mary-Joe and Nova, as we stepped back into our house.“It’s good to be back,” I said as Simon and I shook hands.“It’s been too long Mr Ryder,” Simon said.“We’re not leaving again any time soon,” Nova said. After a very late dinner we all retreated to our bedrooms and I knew that nobody would be up early the next day. The air smelled different in Georgia and I felt a sense of calm when I drove into Hartwell. We were home.I was up early the next morning, my internal clock always woke me up before five am. It was summer holidays and I left the house at seven am after a jog and a shower. I was going to surprise everyone with breakfast from the bakery. A little family celebration that was well deserved.I also planned on talking to the boys about their future during this breakfast. They’d b

“Morning,” I said to Nova as I walked into the kitchen two days later.“You okay? You’re usually up a lot earlier,” she said with a smile as I kissed her cheek.“Late night,” I said and sat down as she started making more coffee.“Have you talked to Luca?” she asked me.“He’ll be here at lunch time,” I said and she smiled even more. “Might take a few days to hand everything over.”“We’re finally going home,” she said with a dreamy look in her eyes.“Listen …” I stopped talking as Nova gasped and I stood up as I saw her put down the newspaper on the counter, her hands shaking.“He’s dead, I can’t believe it,” she said almost breathlessly.“Who’s dead?” I asked her and grabbed the newspaper.“International French businessman, Marshall Covington, found dead in his room in Illinois.”I scanned through the article and it described how they found his body in his bed and his head in a nearby dumpster. Police had no leads, there had been no forced entry into his room, no fingerprints and no d

Nova and I sat in the audience as Wynter and Milo graduated from high school. They would turn eighteen in a few months and we couldn’t be prouder. They had both grown up tremendously in the past two years. They might as well have been twins even though they didn’t really look alike. Milo had Ava’s brown eyes, Felix’s dark brown hair and he wasn’t really pale like Basil and Elio were but lightly tanned from being outside so much.Wynter’s hair was a shade lighter than mine, almost as if Megan’s blond hair had mixed with my dark hair and produced his. He had my green eyes and his skin was darker than Milo’s. They were both tall, well-built and cheeky as hell.Abigail favoured Megan down to a tee, from her golden blonde hair to her blue eyes and Megan’s smile. She was a beautiful girl and I knew she would be stunning as the years turned her from girl to woman, something I wasn’t quite ready for.Alexis was ethereal with a fairy like beauty, her brown hair had a glow to it that made it se

I stood in a back room with Rev as the top floor of The Drake filled up with lair members. Most of them didn’t know me, the younger generation had never met me and everyone else had forgotten the real me. The irony of the situation wasn’t lost on me and I wouldn’t instantly have their trust or respect.Rev and I walked through the lair members to the raised dais where the Elders were already seated. Nobody made way for me and they nodded their heads at Rev whilst completely ignoring me. I reached the podium and looked at my people. They were all talking among themselves and Rev stepped forward but I stopped him with a look.“Dragonkin of the Grey lair,” I said and switched my aura on. It flowed from me over them, silence greeted me as they all bowed their heads under the pressure. I was so much more powerful than them that even the Elders bowed their heads.“I realize that you don’t know me, that you are worried about the future of this lair and I won’t try to convince you of what I’m

Three days later we held their funeral ceremonies. I kept it short because I knew that at any moment I would break down and I couldn’t, not in front of their lair. I still didn’t think of them as mine and I’d yet to have that conversation with Nova.I broke later when everyone was asleep and I sat in the dark room looking out of the windows, letting the tears fall silently. I’d never fully understood Lucas mourning his parents for so many years, but I got it now, I really got it now.“We need to talk,” I said to Nova the following morning as I sat on the couch that faced the windows.“What about?” she asked me.“Staying in Aurora, doing the right thing,” I said.“Being their Sire …” she replied softly.“There is no one else,” I said.“Look at what happened, even before saying you’d take over as Sire,” she said with worry in her eyes.“That was one man, thinking he could take this town,” I said.“Yes and who comes looking for him?” she asked me.“Nova, don’t make this harder than it is

Nova drove in front with the girls and I followed with Wynter and Milo. We kept up a steady pace and stopped twice, once for gas and once to eat. We reached Aurora by nine pm and I overtook Nova as she followed me to the house. The front door opened and I saw Rev as I parked the car and climbed out. “It’s good to see you Ryder,” he said as he slapped me on the back as we hugged.“I want to know everything you know,” I said as the kids climbed out.“Hi, I’m Nova,” Nova introduced herself and shook hands with Rev.“Rev,” he grunted out and looked at my family.“Ryder?” I turned and looked at Hannah as she came down the steps.“I’m so sorry Hannah,” I said as she hugged me tightly and I felt her tears against my neck.“Look at them all so grown up,” Hannah said once she had released me. “Come inside, let me show you where you’ll be sleeping.”“There’s a folder on Chase’s desk,” Rev said as I threw the keys to Wynter to unload the bags.I left Nova and the kids with Hannah and followed Re

The days passed without incident as the girls got accustomed to their dragons. Scylla and Chusi were different shades of silver and I laughed heartily when I realized that Chusi was exactly like Shae, bossy and care-free.“What’s going on with you?” I asked Wynter one evening as I found him standing on the porch, looking out onto the lake.“I don’t know Dad, something feels off,” he said.“What does Echo say?” I asked him.“Not much but he feels it too. It’s weird, I feel like something’s going to happen,” he said.“Like what? Five years later …Nova and I had gotten married a month later on the farm, our close friends and family present. It was a small, intimate wedding and we’d gone to the Bahamas for two weeks afterwards. Lucas and Rylee had stayed at the farm with Mary-Joe and Simon to watch the kids.Lucas and Rylee loved Nova and in return she loved them as well. The kids were happy with our union and Alexis and Abigail were now truly sisters. Nine months after our honeymoon, Shae was born. She had a full head of black hair and the most beautiful pair of blue eyes that reminded you of the sky.We lived our lives in peace, albeit sometimes boring but always loving. We were happy and Nova was a great mom to our five children. The boys were fifteen and the girls were turning ten with Shae at almost five. Shae ruled over her brothers and sisters with a strong mindset, a strong will of her own and she had me wrapped around her finger.“It seems you’re happy to see me,” Nova said as I turned towards her and
