Zoe’s heart sank when she heard what Yanni said.

Taking off her coat, she sat next to her daughter and rubbed her head. “Were you a good girl today? Did you take your pills?”

She turned on the night light, casting a warm glow in the room.

Yanni buried her face into the pillow listlessly. Her cheeks were fair and her hair was as black as coal. She looked beautiful and graceful. Then, she said softly, “Grandma gave me the pills! They tasted bitter.”

Zoe's heart could just break. Holding Yanni’s cheeks, she said, “You’ll stop having nosebleeds once you go through the surgery. You won’t have to take any more pills either.”

Yanni nodded in response.

Leaping into Zoe’s arms, she said, “I miss Dad, Mom! Deborah said I’ll be seeing Dad soon. Is it true? She also told me that you’re going to make another baby with Dad.”
