[ Claire ]
The warm temperature in the luxurious living room of Tristan Pierce comforted my body. I could feel my pulse. The awkward silence between us could be sensed in the thick air.
I had a homely feeling wrapping me in its warmth in a complete stranger's house whom I trusted and accompanied him here.
“Here, have this, it’ll help to normal your body temperature, Miss Jones.” He offered me some brandy which I took and gulped with an incoherent ‘thanks’.
He sat across me with crossed legs and his hands rested on arms of his single sofa. I tried my best to avoid looking at him.
“Are you feeling better now?” He asked after a few moments of excruciating silence.
“Yes. We can talk now.” I said gaining some confidence.
“Great, I can tell that you’re a smart woman, Claire.” He said addressing me by my first name for the very first time and I hate to admit that it sounded so good, strange.
“What is the use of this smartness when I can’t fight for my rights, Mr. Pierce. I allowed them to ridicule me and made a joke of my dignity in front of the people I know.” I chuckled bitterly.
“You shouldn’t care what people perceive about you, Miss Jones. They’ll forget everything once you regain a higher aim than your family, trust me.” He said.
“I wish I could but I doubt if I even get a job to sustain myself.” I replied.
“Ryan Bale is my stepbrother from my mother. She divorced my father and married a richer man I was only three. You know what is the irony?” He took a pause and sipped his drink, “My father bought his company within a year. Since then, my enmity with Bales is like mouse and cat.”
I was shocked to hear this revelation. Ryan Bale is Tristan’s half brother yet they’re poles apart. At least, knowing these two men in a few hours meeting I could trust Tristan alone in his house whereas Ryan gave me creepy vibes in front of many people.
“Why are you telling me this, Mr. Pierce? Isn’t it your personal matter?” I narrowed my eyes.
“I am telling you this because whatever I am going to tell you the next part of our discussion, Miss Jones. But before I speak, I want you to help yourself with more wine. You're a curious person but you can't take surprises very well." He said and I felt knots in my stomach. How could he know this habit of mine? I never told anyone?
I poured more drink for myself to prepare for his next words.
“Your brother is a disaster for business. Please, no offense but I am stating it as a businessman. Ryan knows it and this is the reason he is acting to play your family’s knight in shining armour. Caleb Jones is a kid for him. He wants to swallow your father’s company, that’s what he has been doing since he took over his company’s command.” He told me, which didn’t come like a shocker. My brother is forced into business by my father since he’s the only son. Caleb always wanted to become a pianist.
“I don’t care what happens to them, Mr. Pierce. They have brought this problem upon themselves.” I said nonchalantly but deep down I knew, I cared for the company which my grandfather built by his hard work.
“You should care, Miss Jones because you’re thirty-one percent share holder of the company. Your father hid your grandfather’s will from you since your grandfather retired and chose a solitary life with his wife. Harris Jones never wants to give you your inheritance. Don’t you think you must take what’s legally yours?” He raised his brow but I was in daze. My parents kept me with meagre financial support, they didn’t even send me in a good school like my siblings and also stopped my college f*e saying I was only wasting their money.
They stole my rights. How could they be this heartless?
“Let’s bring them down, Claire. You have my words. I’ll help you to avenge Ryan Bale because he is our mutual enemy. He’ll try to marry your younger sister Mia Jones but you must know a secret, Claire.” He said and rose from his seat. He walked towards me in slow steps.
For some reason, his eyes reflected so much, some unfamiliar and some twisted emotions.
“What?”
“He is already married. He treats his wife like a trash. No one knows about her existence but she is his goose who lays golden eggs. She’s the daughter and heiress of the president of “The Clark” hotel chains. Once she dies, he’ll lose everything. Knowing your stupid sister, she’ll jump in to marry Ryan and to stop him, we have only to ways.” He paused and waited for my reaction.
“I am listening.” I nodded my head firmly.
“Marry me and claim your inheritance because then you’ll have my back. You are a smart woman, Miss Jones. Rest you know how to handle.” He lay out his preposition.
For a moment, I thought I misheard him.
“Excuse me? What…what did you just say?” I knitted my brows together.
“Marry me, Miss Jones. I need a mother for my son. You don’t have to act like a real mother to him but he never asks for anything. For the first time he wished for something and I can’t refuse his request. He is my only child, my world.” He said boldly.
I blinked my eyes for a second to process what I just heard from him. Did he really want to marry me because his child needs a mother?
“Where is his mother? I mean your wife or girlfriend?” I blurted out and his face turned hard.
“None of your business, Miss Jones. I am proposing a fair deal to you here. We both can have what we want with no strings attached. You just have to act nice with my son and in return, I’ll make sure all those people who made you suffer will pay.” He said.
“This is insane, Mr. Pierce. Marriage isn’t a joke.” I shook my head.
“We’ll be married on papers only and once my son will understand that he doesn’t need a mother in his life. He has everything he’ll ever need and I am there for him, then you can separate from us and start your fresh life with someone you’d chose.” He tried to state it as it was very simple.
I remained silent. It was true, he saved me when nobody came for my help but what he was proposing, it sounded really crazy but then I thought about my life. What will I do tomorrow when I’d be back on the streets?
[ Tristan ]“Tristan, how long? How long are you going to waste your life for something which is your past? Think about your son and your own life. One day or another you’ll need a life partner, a companion. She isn coming back. She must be happy with a family of hers.” My ailing father gave me the same advice I have been hearing from last five years.I was facing the window, the grey sky, rainfall drizzling in silver chains with thunderbolts, it was similar to my inner soul. It’s been years since the woman I loved passionately, like a crazy lover, broke my heart into million pieces and mocked me by sleepingby disappearing after giving birth to my son. I searched her everywhere but a year later I found out that she met with Ryan fucking Balean accident and lost her memories. Her parents told me that she married another man and settled in London. i couldn’t bring myself to love someone again because I am still not over her.“Dad, I have to tell you something. I thought I’d tell you
[ Claire ]I felt uneasy after meeting Tristan’s father, the same ache I experienced when I looked into Tristan’s green eyes for the first time. Why did Mr. Thomas Pierce also looked familiar. Perhaps, I have seen him in the news or business parties.“Miss Jones, we have reached at my son’s school.”I heard Tristan’s voice who ripped me out of my trance.I realised we were outside the giant gates of the most prestigious school of the city. There was no one means it was the private entry.“I am sorry. I didn’t realize.” I passed him an awkward smile. His piercing green eyes flashed another emotion but his neutral face didn’t contour it.“He is a sensitive kid, please ensure that you don’t overwhelm him.” He instructed me and I nodded my head. I felt a twisted knot in my stomach.I agreed to marry a man with a child which makes me a stepmother to a five years old boy at the age of twenty-six. It sounded strange and from inside, I was fretting. I didn’t know whether it was a good decisio
[ Claire ]“Congratulations, on your new journey as husband and wife, Mr. and Mrs. Pierce. Here’s your marriage certificate.” The officer, who proceeded our legal marriage procedure, congratulated us while giving us the marriage certificates.I stared down at the laminated document in my hands. Our signatures were printed and there was the seal of the government and the court which means I am officially married to Tristan Pierce, the richest guy in the city.“Tristan, the rings?” Mr. Thomas Pierce cleared his throat and signalled his son to make me wear the rings. I saw couple rings means I have to do the same.“Mom, Dad, exchange the rings.” Travis exclaimed, his happiness was evident on his gleaming face.Tristan slowly held my hand, I again felt conscious under his intense eyes, my hand shivered when our skins came in contact. He picked a solitaire, the most beautiful diamond cut I have ever seen, surrounded by small sapphires on a platinum band. It also looked familiar. He slid th
[ Tristan ]Her question took me off guard. I didn’t expect her to ask me this because I am not in a mental state to answer this question.“I don’t think so.” I somehow managed to come up with the most obvious and natural response. Her face reflected disappointment but I couldn’t tell her that we have known each other for years, we shared the most beautiful moments together, created memories which helped me to live without her for five years. I wish I could tell her that she’s the first and last woman whom I gave my heart.I don’t want to scare her.“I don’t know but whenever I look at you or your family, I feel a sense of familiarity. I think I am pressing my mind too much.” She said looking away at other direction.“We should head back home. Staying here in a public place isn’t favourable until we announce it through a press release.” I said. Her questions threw me into dilemma.“Okay.” She said in a low voice. My driver opened the door of the backseat and I waited for her to sit fi
[ Claire ] “Claire, don’t stress yourself. Tomorrow’s newspapers will bring you a good news but for now, I think you should see this.” Thomas, who sat beside I and Tristan in their living room, said. The questions of media kept stirring in my mind. How Tristan turned the table and portrayed my family as the villain along with Ryan Bale, it grew my anxiety to next level. How’d they react? They’d hate me even more?“Claire, are you okay?” Tristan’s soft voice brought me back on the earth and I stared down at the tablet. A famous news channel was telecasting the interview we gave to the media a while ago.“Umm, yeah. I am fine.” I forced a smile.“I don’t think you look fine from any angle. You are still pondering over the consequences of our announcement, right?” He raised his brow.“They’ll retaliate, Tristan. My family hates me already and how the media is criticizing them, it’ll only add fuel in the fire.” I said out my worries.“I’ll handle everything, Claire and you shouldn’t be f
[ Claire ]“Mr. Pierce, can we talk?” I fidgeted with the hem of my shirt as I waited for his response. We hadn’t spoken to each other since Ryan left. Thomas and Travis were already asleep in their rooms.Tristan, who was about to move to his room, turned slightly to look at me.“I won’t respond until you stop addressing me formally, Claire.” He said, the displeasure was evident in his tone.“Tristan, can we talk for a moment?” I corrected myself and he nodded his head this time, gesturing me to follow him in his home bar.“What do you prefer?” He asked me.“Anything light, I am not in a mood to get drunk.” I told him and he made us a drink.“What do you want to talk about? It’s almost eleven in the night. I think you should rest because tomorrow is going to be a very long day for us.” He said giving me the drink.“I want to talk about tomorrow, Tristan. What plans do you have? You can share them with me because it is related to me and my life’s current problems.” I said.“You passed
[ Claire ]“This is too much, Tristan. I have my clothes and other stuffs back at my home. I’ll bring everything here once this matter cools down.” I said to Tristan while the maids kept countless shopping bags in my room. It felt awkward and unnecessary because I don’t want to give him an impression that I want to be depend on him financially.“Claire, you deserve everything and in a few hours you won’t be the same Claire Jones anymore. You’ll need these dresses, shoes and everything.” Tristan smiled.“Still, I don’t like extravagance. Money is hard earned. We should use it wisely.” I said quietly because I had been living on meagre income since my family doesn’t support my personal expanses so I know the value of money.“You have to resign from your current job at my company, Claire.” He said and I turned to face him. I was shocked, how did he know. I am a mere employee in his sub-branch where he never visits. I am practically a nobody.“How…how did you know?” I stuttered.“I know e
[ Claire ]“Don’t stress yourself too much, Claire. Like I said, everything will go according to the original plan.” Tristan’s voice again drew my attention on him who has been playing my knight in shining armour since we met.I turned to look at him, he as a constant smile playing on his handsome face.“Why are you doing all this for me, Tristan? We agreed to help each other, I admit but your efforts for me is more than I am giving you in return.” I asked him.“I am doing nothing, Claire. I agreed to play my part and I am only doing it, please, don’t misjudge my intentions. It’s pure business.” He assured me but his last line pinched me, strange.“Still, bringing my grandparents, all the way here and help them to settle comfortably, I think you’re troubling yourself for my fucked up life. I should be the one to take care of my grandparents.” I said, feeling ashamed.“My grandparents died when I was very young but I loved them so much and I still miss them. So, whatever I did for your
