CARA “What… what is going on here?” I asked, my voice breaking at the end.
Standing before me was the man whom I have spent the last five years with as my husband. Now he was holding the hands of Jade, the woman who had been by my side for two years as my husband’s sister.
“Who are you?” I asked her, my eyes assessing the simple white dress she was wearing.
She gave me a smirk, her warm eyes suddenly turning cold as she walked up to me.
“I’m the new Mrs. Richardson,” she cackled.
I looked in the corner and saw Henry’s mother who was smiling happily. It’s no secret that the woman has always hated me.
All through the years I was married to Henry she barely visited. Whenever she visited it was to nag and insult me for not having any child then she would leave after threatening to throw me out of her son’s house.
“What is she talking about, Henry?” I called out to the man who I had spent the last three peaceful years with before our two years turned sour.
“Please, Henry, tell me it’s all a mistake,” I begged.
I know I sound like a lunatic especially since with the tears rolling down my cheeks, the snot in my nose, and my pitiful state in the wheelchair but I didn't care. I just didn't want what I had just seen to be true.
“Please, Henry, Jade is your younger sister, right?” I asked him.
The truth was staring at me in the face but I was willing to go blind and not acknowledge it. All Henry needed to say was that it wasn't true and we would go home still together. That was how much I loved him.
Henry walked up to me with a cruel smile he twisted the knife deeper into my bleeding heart with his next words.
“It’s true, Cara, Jade isn't my sister but my new wife. I'm done with your barren ass,” he sneered.
I gasped for breath, clutching my chest as the nurse patted my back.
“Let’s go back to the hospital, Ma’am, you're too weak for this,” the nurse said, her voice laced with sadness.
“Listen to her, you pathetic weakling!” my mother-in-law’s voice sounded as she walked up to me.
The magistrate who had married Henry and Jade was long gone. The courthouse was empty except for us.
“Mother, how could you support them? Henry just admitted to cheating,” I cried.
“He cheated right under your nose because you're worthless!” the woman hissed at me, “Only if you were useful then he wouldn't feel the need to bring his mistress home and make her his wife.”
I laughed sadly. They had played me. For the past one year, they've lived under my roof and cheated under my nose but I was too blind to see it.
“How could you do this to me? Both of you?” I yelled at them, tears running down my cheeks.
“I trusted you, Jade. I treated you like a sister!” I cried.
“I felt pity for you, Cara, you're so naive it’s repulsive,” Jade laughed mockingly.
“Why?” I asked her, then turned to Henry, “Why hurt me like this? What did I ever do to you?”
“You are a parasite. You're useless and all you're after is my money. You can't have a child because of your bad luck. Your bad luck almost killed me and I knew I needed to get rid of you,” Henry answered.
“But it’s not my fault,” I cried.
“I don't care, Cara!” Henry yelled, then he turned to Jade and stared at her lovingly, “All I care about is that I met Jade two years ago and she brought a light that had been missing into my life.”
My heart broke as I stared at him and saw how he looked at her. The last time he looked at me like that was two years ago. Since then I've been doing my best for him to look at me like this again.
But instead, I watched in pain as he stared at Jade lovingly. He caressed her face and kissed her even though I was there.
My heart twisted as he told her how much he loved her. He showered her with praises and affection – everything that should have been said to me! I lost my temper when Jade told him she loved him too.
I sprang from the wheelchair and gave Jade a resounding slap irrespective of the pain that throbbed in my fractured ankle.
“You slut, I'll kill you!” I yelled at her in anger.
Jade let out a loud cry as she held her cheeks. Before I could make another move, Henry gave me a resounding slap that sent me rolling across the room as my side hit the wheelchair.
I felt a splitting pain in my ribs and my head as I let out a loud cry. Henry didn't approach me, instead I watched as he led Jade out of the court with his mother following him.
The last thing I saw before I passed out was the nurse hovering over me and begging me to hold on to the ambulance.
Then I welcomed the darkness and wished I never got to wake up and see the light again. I would choose death rather than wake up to feel the pain of this terrible betrayal from the two people I loved most.
***
“Sleeping beauty awake.”
I woke up to see the face of the woman who had betrayed me in the most unimaginable way possible. I was in the hospital and I could hear the sound of the beeping machines.
Jade was standing beside me, holding a document in her hand. She grinned as she noticed how my eyes were flickering around the room.
“Calm down, I'm not going to hurt you… Yet,” Jade said.
My heart skipped a beat as I tried to speak. My whole body hurt like I got run over by a truck. There was a cast on my leg and I could feel a sharp pain in my stomach.
“What are you doing here?” I asked her.
“I came to see you,” she laughed, “Henry wouldn't even come see you, he doesn't care.”
“Go to hell!” I hissed at her.
She grinned, “Oh but you're going first, darling. First, I have to tell you that you’ve finally lost your womb. You were so reckless when you were asked to rest. Excessive bleeding and trauma made you lose it.”
I felt numb as my throat constricted, and I was unable to breathe. Tears rolled down my cheeks in torrents as I reached to touch my stomach.
“No…” I mumbled.
Jade continued, ignoring my cries, “Also, I’m happy to say that I only wanted to kill your baby but you losing your womb in the process is the icing on the cake for me.”
My eyes widened as I stared at her and suddenly recalled the doctor’s words.
“It was you!” I said.
She smiled, “Bingo! Seems you're not so dumb after all. Yes, I poisoned your tea so you'd fall down the stairs and it would be an accident. I couldn't let you have Henry’s baby not when I was getting married to him today. If you had told him he wouldn't have married me.”
“How could you?” I cried, rage flowing through me, “I’ll make you pay for this!”
She hadn't just made me lose my baby, she had taken my womb also. My heart was filled with so much anger it felt like I would explode from it.
“Oh shut up, Cara, only one of us is meant to give him an heir,” she said, rubbing her stomach.
I stared at her and she smiled, nodding, “Yes, Cara, Henry’s child is growing in my womb.”
I couldn't believe what I was hearing. Jade had taken everything right under my nose. But why? What have I ever done to her?
It seems I voiced my thoughts out because Jade burst into laughter.
“I don't need a reason other than I want a good life for myself,” she grinned.
“You were willing to ruin my home for such a petty reason?” I asked her, sounding sad, “I treated you well, Jade.”
Jade scoffed, “Oh please, I’m so glad I'm done pretending to be nice, Cara. Besides your home was already ruined, Henry was unhappy and looking for something outside. I only gave him that and made it look like you're the villain.”
“You’re never getting away with this, Jade, I’m going to tell Henry all about your cheap tricks when I’m out of here!” I swore.
Jade walked up to me and brought out a syringe, “About that, Cara, do you think Henry will believe you?”
I stared at the empty syringe, “What do you mean? What else have you planned?”
Jade dialed a number on her phone and I heard Henry’s voice immediately.
“Help me, Henry!” Jade suddenly cried out.
I frowned, “What are you doing?”
“Help! I came to see… no… Cara don't, please! Save me!”
“Jade! What’s happening? Cara if you…” then Jade ended the call and smirked at me.
“Why did you do that?” I cried.
“You’ll see,” Jade grinned, before stabbing her stomach with the empty syringe as she let out a shrill scream.
CARAI couldn't walk properly but I was able to drag myself out of bed and stop Jade from falling. I wasn't so callous as to not help her especially since she's pregnant. “What is wrong with you?!” I cried, removing the syringe from her stomach. She was now bleeding from her stomach and her leg as she stared at me with a smug smile. “I knew you wouldn't be able to resist, you fell right into my trap; thanks to your good heart,” she smirked. “What are you talking about?” I queried, confused. Immediately the door to my ward was pushed open as Henry stood in front of me, his face a mask of fury. “Help me, Henry!” Jade suddenly cried out.“Henry, help! I don't know why Jade –” My words were cut off by a resounding slap from Henry as he grabbed Jade from me. I felt the sting of the slap as my eyes watered immediately and my lips bruised.“How could you be so wicked, huh?” Henry yelled at me.“No, it’s my fault, Henry. I shouldn't have told Cara I was pregnant,” Jade cried. My eyes
CARAHenry hissed in anger, “You spiteful witch, you still have the nerves to think you can demand something of me?” I could not believe it, there was absolutely nothing left of the man that I had married, the person standing before me breathing out these harsh words was something entirely different.I was done, done taking all this humiliation and maltreatment from him, done trying to repair what was already beyond repair, I was done with it all, I just wanted everything to come to an end, my marriage, my pain, even my life.“I want a fucking divorce!” I screamed more emphatically as the policemen held me on either side and dragged me away from the hospital ward.My entire body hurt, I was nowhere close to being in good health but right then, I didn’t care, I just wanted it all to be over with.“Oh you will get your divorce, you child killer!” he fired back. “Take her away from my sight.”The pieces of my heart broke into even smaller fragments and a tear rolled down my left cheek.
HENRYI watched the police car drive off into the distance and I stood looking until it was out of sight. My heart was thumping in my chest and my fist were squeezed into a ball as I watched the vehicle disappear and with it that heartless witch that has been masquerading as my wife for five years. It was thanks to my mother that the police even got involved. When I found out what she had done to Jade, going as far as attacking our baby and trying to kill her just because she was jealous, I wanted to kill her with my hands.Luckily my mother was able to talk me out of it, good thing she was out of my life for good.I took out my phone and dialed the number of my lawyer, “Tom,” I responded as soon as he picked, “Yeah, it’s me, draft out divorce papers immediately, bring it to me at St Garland’s Hospital.”I listened for a while then frowned irritably, “Don’t ask me any dumb questions, just do as I said!” I ended the call and turned around to see my mother walking up to me with a curiou
JADEResounding claps resonated from my hospital room as Henry kept ramming into me from behind, oh crispy fried chips! His cock was so engorged, it filled me completely and with the swift back and forth movement, he excited the inside of me in quick succession leaving me moaning. He held onto my hips from behind and pressed them down on the bed, pinning me in place and stopping me from jerking too much and pulling away. The harder he rammed into me, the greater the pleasure intensified and the more I felt like writhing away and squirming free from his grasp, I could scarcely process the level of pleasure I was receiving now.Henry knew me too well, he had mastery of my body, he knew how to give it to me like crazy. He kept me pinned as then he slowed his stroke, from the quick and vicious, he transitioned to the slow and deep.My hands clasped the sheets desperately as my mouth hung open, a loud moan escaped my throat as he pulled almost all the way out again.“Fuck me, Henry, Fuck m
PHILIP“So what do you do?” I asked, trying to sound interested. In truth, I was bored out of my mind.“Well, I am an influencer,” the blonde answered smiling as she sipped her margarita.“What does that mean?” I asked, dumbfounded.“You know, I influence people,” she said, still smiling widely. She seemed to be having the time of her life. Why won’t she? I was the one who took her on a date to a five star restaurant.“Ah-ha,” I said and nodded and took a sip of my wine.“You know when Terry told me that he had a handsome friend who was also a lawyer, I could scarcely believe it. I thought I had met all of Terry's friends!” she said with enthusiasm.I raised an eyebrow and looked at her, “What else did Terry say about me?”Well, she gave me a dirty look and batted her long lashes before continuing, “He said you were single… and searching,” she winked.“Hmmm,”“He also made mention of the fact that you have had the hots for a particular girl since forever but you are finally ready to m
CARA“Look what we have here! Fresh meat,” a tall dark skinned prisoner said as the lady cop brought me towards the jail cell.I looked at the cop in horror, “Do I need to go in there? Please.”She shook her head at me, “Keep it moving, love. Maybe next time, don’t try to kill babies!”I looked at her in shock, “I told you, I never did anything like that!”“Save it for someone who cares,” she shoved me inside the cell and then the electronic door clicked shut. The dark skinned prisoner grinned mischievously as she and the rest of her gang watched me, the way a lion watched a goat that was just dropped into its cage.I did not want to be here, I don’t belong in here, “Philip please, hurry!” I whispered.I had just made the call to him. Although he promised to be here as soon as possible, who knew how long that would actually take?Who knew what could happen to me from now till then.“Hey beautiful, what’s your name!” the dark skinned lady asked and flashed a set of bad yellowing teeth
CARAI walked unsteadily towards the precinct door.I did not think that I would be getting out this soon, what happened, was this Philip’s doing?I didn’t know how to feel about the whole thing, I had given up, resigned myself to the fate that life had given to me and now this, a ray of sunshine was breaking through my darkness.I had to hold onto the rails to stop myself from falling as I descended the stairs, my ribs felt like they were on fire.Whatever pain killers the doctors gave me in the hospital after the assault I endured must have begun wearing off.I had nothing, nowhere to go– The sound of a powerful engine interrupted my thoughts and caused me to look up.A silver colored Ferrari pulled up to the curb in front of the precinct, the headlamps flashing wildly.I winced at the brightness and raised my hand to shield my eyes. The engine cut and the lights went dead.I blinked as I stood on the steps, watching. The door popped up and Philip came running out, “Cara, I’m so so
CARAThe Ferrari took a left and zoomed down a side street with interlocking floors. There were tall trees on either side of the narrow single lane and there was a wrought iron gate up ahead at the head of the curve in the road.Seeing those gates after all this time made me uneasy. I didn’t know how to feel exactly. This was not what one would call, a friendly house call.As soon as the Ferrari came up to the gate, there was an electronic hum as the gate clanked open and made way.Philip drove in.I looked at the small bungalow that was near the gate and I saw a padlock on the front door.Go figure, it has been five years, a lot of things had changed.Philip parked in front of the house and got out and came over to my own side and helped me out, “Easy,” he said, his hands firmly wrapped around my waist as he guided me out and balanced me on my feet.I looked in front of the mansion that was towering before me and a feeling of nostalgia rushed over me.Memories of my childhood began t
CARA“Tell me that you want me,” he grunted into my ear and stuck his tongue out and ran it around my ear.It was a mixture of a pleasurable and tickling sensation, my body was reacting to every little thing he was doing.“I want it, give it to me,” I moaned. He didn’t stop, he kept running his wet hot tongue around my ear and whispering into it, “Tell me you need it.”My hips jerked forward as I felt another spasm, “I need it, please, give it to me.”I could not restrain my yearning any longer, my body was calling out for his cock, why was he being so stingy, I needed to feel it on my tongue, to stroke it, to put in my mouth and finally to feel it sliding back and forth inside of me.“Give it to me,” I tried to break free from his hold but Philip’s grip was solid.“I don’t believe you,” he said and thrust his tongue deeper into my ear, I cocked my head to one side as a woozy feeling came over me and my eyes rolled back in their socket.Damn it, that felt so damn good.“Ahhh, don’t st
CARAPhilip pushed hard into me, driving me backwards until I was pressed against the hot tiles, the water from the shower causing steam to rise up in the stall.Up until the point I was protesting and trying to squirm out of his control he had been soft but firm, his kiss, almost a whisper on my lips, his touch like a fleeting breeze but the second that I gave in, it was like everything was turned up a notch. He clasped his fingers in mine and raised it up from my sides all the way up until it was over my head and he held it to the wall.I could feel the mass in his pants as it pressed into my belly, my breathing was becoming more rapid, just like his.His broad back was shielding me from the onslaught of the jet of hot water, but not enough, my pants were soaked with the water and it clung to me even tighter than before.“Kiss me,” Philip muttered.I almost could not hear him above the sound of the stream of water.I looked up at him, his eyes were dim as they stared at my breasts,
CARA“C’mon Cara, give me two more reps, two more reps!” Carmen’s loud voice boomed in my ear.I strained as I struggled to get back on my feet with a 110 pounds barbell on my back.“C’mon, one more to go, you can do it,” she said, clapping loudly to keep me motivated.I shook my head, my temple was covered in sweat and I was drenched completely, from the top of my sports bra to all the way down to my gym pants.“Don’t quit on me, you are not a quitter, don’t quit on me!” she kept yelling.I let out a strained yell as I went down for the final rep, my thighs felt as if they were being drawn apart.I gritted my teeth and got back up to my feet and then dropped the barbell back on the squatting rack.“That’s it… that’s how it is done,” she clapped as she looked at me, “Two more sets to go.”I looked up at her with a raised eye brow, “What?”“C’mon Cara, no pain, no god dem gain.”“I think I have felt enough pain to last a lifetime,” I said back to her.My personal trainer shook her head
HENRYFIFTEEN MONTHS LATERThe incessant ringing of telephones was driving me crazy. The lines would not just stop buzzing since the news leaked out in the media.I needed to find who was responsible for that leak and deal with them.My lawyer Tom stepped into the office space and beckoned to me.Glad to be torn away from the buzzing telephones and the strained voices of my employees trying to explain our situation away to our partners, I let him into a small office.“What’s going on Tom, did you look into it?” I asked him as I shook his hand.Tom nodded, his expression was grim.I just knew the news was not going to be good, “Tell me,” I said, determined to face it head on. “Your finance staff had been keeping it from you but after the leak, I was able to threaten them with legalities and they finally admitted it, your company is broke and about to file for bankruptcy.”His words hit me hard and I squinted, not believing my eyes or ears for that matter. “How? How did this happen?”T
CARA“Ms. Steele, Ms. Steele,” the flustered receptionist called after me as I walked into Christopher’s office.Christopher looked up from his laptop, there was a frown on his face as he watched me come in through the door.“It’s okay, Pauline,” he said to his receptionist. She nodded and then looked at me, her eyes still wide with panic from me barging into her boss’ office.“Hello Cara, or should I say, CEO?” he grinned.I could hear the mockery in his voice and my anger rose but I fought it down. I could not lose my cool, I needed to be better than that.I tucked my jacket and walked over to his table and sat down, making myself comfortable. He watched me and then leaned back, “What can I do for you?”“I hear you have been talking to the other board members, telling them all sort of things.” I began, keeping my voice neutral.According to Philip, that was the way to go.After the disastrous first meeting where my father introduced me to the board, I had actually taken the time to
CARARiding at the back of the Cadillac with my father, I felt so tense and uptight. What the hell was I doing?I was starting to question myself.Did I really have to do this?“Having second thoughts?” my father asked, he was calmly studying my face.“Kind of?” I said, being as plain and honest as possible, “Daddy, are you sure that I am right for this job?”“I founded Steele Corp from the ground with nothing but my wits and my ruthlessness, I would be damned if someone not bearing the name of Steele gets to run the company.”He looked at me before speaking again, “Whether you are ready or not, this is what you have to do. I know you would give it your best, Kiddo.”I forced a smile, give it my best?Sure, I was going to give it my best but I was not certain of what my best was worth. Was it even worth anything?I adjusted my striped suit once more and nestled deeper into the leather of the back seat, my heart was thumping in my chest and my palms were sweaty. The Cadillac pulled int
CARAPhilip did not stick around to drop me so I walked and as I walked, I thought. He made it sound like my father was about to do something very drastic and I knew Philip long enough to know that he did not raise false alarms. How could it be? Sure my father was difficult and annoying at times, always trying to have his way but I loved him and he loved me.I had never really seen the other side of him. The side of him that made him one of the wealthiest men in New York, I didn’t think I wanted to see that either. He had this uncanny ability to leave all that at the office whenever he came home but today, I would be forced to confront that.As I reached the estate, my legs ached, I had not walked so long in such a long time but I knew it was good for me. I needed to exercise more, eat better, sleep longer, get back into a healthy cycle of doing things, something that I had not been able to do for a long time.I took a quick shower and changed into something more casual before I went
JADE“Do you not love me?” I pressed on after breaking the soft kiss.I could see it now, the fight had left Henry’s eyes, I had to make sure that every ember of it died down and something else was rekindled in his eyes… lust!I leaned in more, pressing myself against him.“Of course I love you, of course I trust you, that’s not what I am saying,” he protested weakly.I splayed my fingers across his chest, it felt wet to the touch… he must have had a very hard day, what he needed now was good sex, “Then what does it matter? Nothing else matters but that,” I kissed him again.Henry grabbed me by the shoulders and pulled me away from him, his eyes turning hard again.I tensed up, then I turned on the sprinklers, that always did the trick.I saw the hardness leave his eyes the moment he saw my eyes clouded by tears.“Don’t you want me?” I whispered and then seductively traced my hands up from my belly all the way to my breasts.Henry still had a strong grip on my shoulders but now the in
HENRYI could not just understand how I had been unable to get Jade to tell me the truth.I had brought up this issue twice already but somehow, I had not been able to get her to answer me, how? How was I always failing to find out what I wanted to know about? This time around, I vowed to myself that I would not let that happen. I would find out the truth, one way or the other.Enough of all the beating around the bush, but before I could do that, there was something I needed to do first.I drove back to the 5th precinct barely under the speed limit, there was an urgency burning in my soul as I pushed open those doors and headed right up to the detective lounge.Detective Gains was clearing out his table and putting files into a paper box.He looked up when I came in and the somber expression on his face turned into a mask of fury.“What the hell have you done?” he started.“Detective I need your help,” I began, ignoring him.He scoffed, “Need my help. Do you even hear yourself.”“Wh
